Welcome to Term 4. In particular I would like to welcome back Mr Mick Byrne. Mr Byrne will be with us for the first 4 weeks of term replacing Mr Andrew Lawless who is enjoying some extended leave. Term 4 is generally a very busy term. In the first two weeks we have a number of significant events. Tonight our Performing Arts Concert will be held in the Ardrossan Town Hall, next week from Wednesday to Friday the Year 3 to 6 Camp will be held at West Beach and on Friday of week 2 our Year 12 Breakfast will be held signifying the last formal day of school for these students. The term planner forms part of our Newsletter this week and I encourage all families to keep a copy of this planner visible in the home. As mentioned above, our 12 students finish formal lessons at the end of week 2. Year 12 students will still attend school on some days to:

finalise the last of their assessment pieces

access support from their teachers

undertake examinations for subjects with an examination as the external assessment component. I remind year 12 students, that when attending school, including for examinations, the school uniform is to be worn. I wish all of our year 12 students the best as they work toward the successful completion of their SACE. Year 11 students will complete their formal lessons at the end of week 7 this term. Our year 10s will complete at the end of week 8, provided they are 16 years old and their parents/carers sign an exemption form. This exemption form will be available for 16 year old year 10 students in week 6. Students in year 10 and 11 have been engaged in subject and course selection for 2018 in the latter part of term 3. If you wish to discuss subject selection in the Senior School, please contact the school to arrange for a meeting time or phone conference with Robbie Hering or Karen Bond. I have heard from some community members concerned that on occasions they witness some of our secondary students out in the community during the school day. It is important to know that some students are enrolled under the Flexible Learning Option program. This program provides the young person with a Case Manager. In negotiation with the school, the student’s parents/carers and the Case Manager, a learning program is designed for the individual student that is comprised of some traditional lessons at school, some off-site programs, work placement and life skills training. We also have some students in year 11 engaged in work placements as a requirement of their Community Studies course. From time to time we have short term vacancies for Ancillary Staff, both in classrooms and administration. To be eligible for employment within DECD schools you require a current Employable Ancillary Register (EAR). If you are interested in finding out more information please make an appointment to speak to Dianna Honner, our Business Manager.

Kind regards, Karen Bond Principal

Poultry Unit at AAS During term 3 the year 9 and 10 science classes combined to study hatching and raising chickens and the poultry industry. We started off by incubating the eggs donated by Kathryn Cameron and Belinda Chapman. Jasmine B Our class prepared a roster for checking on the eggs. Two students each day needed to check and record the temperature for 37 degrees, water in the tray, humidity at 55% and the movement of the eggs. We all had to have a turn on the roster, ¾ of the class did their job properly. Jemma When we started the poultry topic I was happy. After 21 days we got our first lot of chicks, there were 8. A week later we got 5 more. Akala During the 21 days, we learned about possible complications of why eggs may not hatch. Reasons were the egg may not have been fertilised or bacteria got into the egg and affected the health of the chick or the temperature fluctuated too much. Jess We weighed the chicken when they hatched and used nail polish to tell them apart. This didn’t work as it faded and washed off before we could re weigh them. Nikita The chickens were kept in a big box with feed, water, sand to scratch in and a heat lamp set at 37 degrees. Leah We looked at the benefits of having chickens, like the manure can be composted, the eggs can be used in Home Ec., students fruit scraps can be used as feed and they can be great distraction at break times. Jasmine S So far, raising the chickens has been a learning curve for everyone, but it is nice to see that everyone is caring and looking after them properly. Caleb

Thank you to Central Yorke School for allowing us to use the incubator, Kathryn and Belinda for the eggs, Luke Carter for the chick feed, Coast Road Motors for the big box, Mr Curtis for an industry talk, Bruce Williams for the chook shed and to the year 9 and 10 science students for the enthusiasm and dedication. This will be an ongoing project that will involve the whole school.

From the Deputy’s Desk

Welcome back to a busy and exciting Term 4.

I hope to see many family, friends and community members

at our Annual Performing Arts Concert this evening. The

concert will be held in the Ardrossan Town Hall, commencing

at 7pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our

talented music students. It is also a great chance for students

and families from our younger classes to see the options

which are available through our Choir and Instrumental music

programs. Thanks to Mrs Debbie Schwartz, Mrs Lori Brooks

and Mr Jonn Gorden for their work in preparing the students

for the concert, and also to the students for their hard work

and dedication and to the music student’s families for their

ongoing support.

On Wednesday 25th October our Year 3-6 students head off on

their 3 day Adelaide camp. We look forward to them sharing

their experiences on their return on Friday 27th October. Mr

Patrick Clark, Miss Deony Sims, Miss Aimee Nixon and Mrs

Petrina Winen will be accompanying the students.

If you have visited the Year 3/4 or Year 4/5 classrooms this week you will have noticed some changes. The removal an internal wall in each class has made a huge difference to the classroom space. This is just one project which has been undertaken this year as part of our continuous facilities upgrade. Kind regards

Margaret
