Obscure refer- ences have been made at several meetings in council to what is being termed the “Liquid Platinum affair”. Councillors and municipal officials have not helped by dodging any open discussion in spite of the DA’s at- tempts to ask questions and get an- swers. Liquid Platinum and contractor Sanyati Civils were involved in sever- al major contracts in the Umzinto CBD area during 2011 and 2012. At the time, questions were asked about the cost of some of these projects and whether VAT was included or exclud- ed in those amounts and whether var- iation orders had been issued for de- partures from the original contracts specifications. When these issues were apparent- ly clarified, the council’s ANC majori- ty and the municipality’s senior offi- cials strongly represented a determi- nation that the numbers were final and that legal efforts to obtain more would be resisted. It now appears that, for no appar- ent reason, it has been decided to pay R9,5 million towards those claims. The fact that this is contrary to expec- tations is emphasised by comments from the finance department that the situation is potentially embarrassing in these cash-strapped times. Councillors, led by DA caucus lead- er Edwyn Baptie, want to know why the ANC majority has, apparently without legal concurrence, elected to approve the payment. Baptie at- tempted to have the issue discussed at the recent August Exco meeting. ANC councillors were quick to sti- fle this, stating that the issue is under review and that Baptie’s request is “unprocedural”. Certainly, com- ments at the finance portfolio com- mittee meeting seemed to confirm that the decision will present the mu- nicipality with considerable embar- rassment at a time when funds are scarce. As it is, the municipality is negoti- ating loans to meet some of its liabili- ties and projects. “What has changed to lead them to approve the demand which they so convincingly argued against before? It leaves doubt and speculation about the motives and it could leave our long-suffering ratepayers to pick up the tab for dubious management, once again,” said Baptie. Toti post boxarea a drug den?SONJA NELL>>[email protected]

AFTER receiving information from a con-cernedmemberofthepublic,theFeverreport-erwent to investigate the conditionof thepostboxes at the Amanzimitoti Post Office.

On Sunday morning, 25 August found onthe floor in front of the boxes was rubbish, urine, saliva and burnt tinfoil and cut straws, which may indicate drug use.

The concerned member said that she sus-pects that the post box area at the Toti post of-ficeisbeingusedasadrugden.Sheapparentlyfound evidence of this on the floor on numer-ous occasions when she collected her post.

TheFeverwent to thepost officeduring theweek, but found the area at the post boxesclean and in adecent condition, with nodrug-related itemsaround. The floorwas also clearof junk mail.

When inquiring at the post office’s generalmanager about the allegations, the Feverwasinformedthatthestaffarenotallowedtospeakto the media.

The Fever reporter was given the contactnumber of a media spokesperson.

The post office general manager said thattheyareawareofthecomplaintsandhavetak-en it upon themselves to try to keep the areain front of the post boxes clean.

When questioning those who have a postbox there it is clear that despite the effortsmadeby thepost officemanagement, thepostboxes are sometimes, especially early in themorning andoverweekends, found in aques-tionable state, with urine on the floor, wallsandagainst thepostboxes, junkmail isstrewnalloverandevidenceofdrugusewerethemostcommon complaints.

At the time of going to press, the post officemedia spokesperson could not be reached forcomment and the SAPS declined to comment.

THEUmdoniMunicipality’s largestdebtor at around R5 million, is theUgu District Municipality — it’sparent district municipality.

While not surprising, consider-ing thecloserelationshipand inter-municipality dealings, a number ofcouncillors from both sides of thehouse find this of deep concern.

This is because Ugu is alsoknown to be financially strappedand much of the debt is both longoverdue and results from failure topay its share of joint undertakingssuch as running the Disaster Cen-tre.

Questions and urgings fromscouncillors such as Speaker SykesNaidoo and opposition leaderEdwynBaptie overmanymeetingshave failed to induce much pro-gresss. In fact, debts in Umdoni’sbooks from governmental organi-sations in general are an issue.

Naidoo said that they reflect a“somewhat cavalier disregard ofdebt processes and that a commit-ment towards a payment plan islacking”.

At the recent finance meeting,Baptie suggested that Umdonishould approach the Treasury re-garding outstanding debt.

“It’s theonlywaytogetourmon-ey,” he said.

It was agreed that approachestowards the debtors on a high, equal level such asmayor tomayorand municipal manager tomunicipal manager should be ex-plored.

VOX POPS >> New DNA Bill to be passed STORY & PHOTOS: SONJA NELL

‘It is about time thatSouth Africa follows international trends in fightingcrime. Criminals might justbecome more conscious ofbeing caught with an advanced system like that inplace.’

CRUZ NAIDOO

‘I think they can take iteven further and build adatabase with everyone’sDNA, just like they do withfingerprints. Then criminalswill have no chance of getting away.’

VANITA PRINSLOO

‘It is certainly going to helpwith accuracy and moreconvictions. It leaves lessroom for mistakes whengoing to court.’

MELISSA REDDI

‘I think it is going to lead toquicker andmore convictions and I amhoping itmakes criminalswary of committing crimes.’

Ihavetakencarefulnoteofyourorgan-isation’s recent comments that areframed in hatred, anger and racism andare seen as an attack on innocent Indianpeople in general.

Your organisation’s most recent com-mentsthatIndianpeopleshouldnotbene-fit from black economic empowermentand affirmative action and that Indian-ownedlandshouldbedistributedtoblack

South Africans is devoid of any logic andonly serves to deepen the historical divi-sions in society, the legacy of apartheidthat wounded our nation so deeply.

I need not remind you that apartheiddiscriminated against all non-whiteSouth Africans to the extent that many ofour fellowbrethren had to fend for them-selvesunderverydifficult circumstances.

To promote the punishment of thosewho were able to rise against the chal-lenges of apartheid advances the sameapartheid principles of discord, hatredand division.

I amwriting in thehope thatmycorre-spondence will bring about some sem-blanceofsanityandcallonyourorganisa-

It is rather unfortunate at a timewhenournationonceagaincelebrates the lega-cy of our beloved Madiba your organisa-tionhaschosenapaththatfostersdivisionrather than unity.

So, there is good news, disturbing news and news that justcan’t be missed to look out for in this issue.

Bad, good, astonishing,entertaining

Dear Fever,I AM beginning to believe that taxi drivers

are colour-blind. It’s not often that one sees ataxistopataredtraffic light, letaloneanamberone.

There should be CCTV cameras at allhotspot traffic lights, throughout the country.Yes, thiswould be costly, but it would certainly

be life-saving device well worth the money. If municipal mayors and the like can get a

R800 000motorcartogetfromoneeventtoan-other and go homewith, surely the budget canbe stretched to include CCTV cameras at cer-tain traffic-light hotspots.

Dear Fever,I SO admire and thank the SAPS for

members’ dedication and relentless fightagainst crime in South Africa.

They are so good that internationalagencies call on their expertise and skilltohelp inotherpartsof theworld—that’s

a pat on the back for them.Just stop for one moment to consider

I thank the SAPS for its fight againstcrime in all areas and all arenas.

Born in the ‘lefty zone’Dear Fever,

IWRITEinresponsetothedelightfulsnippet“Enter the lefty zone”, Fever, 9 August.

I went to Regents Park School in Johannes-burg as a younggirl. InGrade1 Iwas taught by

a Miss Myron, asmelly old bag whoalways wore a longfur jacket because ofthe “scales” on herhands and arms andwho smelt of Dettol. She always held apencil or the chalkwith a tissue woundaround it.Well, fromday one she had it in

forme because I was left-handed. Shewas de-termined to break my “curse”. One instance Irememberwell waswhen she tiedmy left armbehindmybackand tried to forceme tousemyrighthand.Thensheputaboardaboutmyneckand made me to stand outside the classroomuntilmymotherarrived.Fromthenonthough,I was never picked on again by Miss Myron.

WhenIwasyoungI tookballetclasses,how-ever, when everyone was “sailing” off to theright, there I was “sailing” off to the left.

Most microwaves handles are suit right-handedpeople.Toiletrollholdersaremostlyontheright.Tablesettingsarefor“righties”.Ihavea bad sense of direction as I always tend to goto the left. My sliding door in my beautiful cot-tage has right-handed door handles making itdifficult for me to lock from the outside. I triedto teach my eldest son (now 55) how to writewhenhewasyoung, messeduphiswriting for-ever.

Mymiddleson(54)isambidextrous.Heoncehadapianolidclosedonhisright-handandhadto learn how to write with his left, which hemostly uses to this day.

Now at 75 I am often asked to teach craft-making I’minvolved inandat last I canproudlysay: “Sorry I’m left-handed and it is very diffi-cult to teach any other old duck.”

So I know all about being left-handed, buthave survived to share my story.
