    Term 1: Week 06B

    Dear Parents,

During the week, I was able to spend time with our Stage 3, 4, 5 and 6 students in Years 5 to 12 discussing the importance of developing an inclusive community at Lindisfarne. This of course is based on respect for diversity. We are all meant to be different, unique and special in our own right. We should be able to pursue our interests and passions in a climate of mutual respect and encouragement without fear of ridicule or put down from our peers, whether that be face to face or online.

Our motto of ‘Let your Light Shine’ encourages students to do just that and I will be working diligently with the Staff, Students, Parents and wider community to ensure that this is the case for all of the children and young people who attend our School.

Next Friday, 17 March 2017 we will join schools across the nation in promoting the National Action Day on Bullying through all Preschool to Year 12 students being involved in the ‘Bullying No Way’ initiative. We know that bullying is wrong and we need to be upfront with our children and young people about this issue. Please discuss your parental expectations in this regard with your children and we will work together to bring about real and sustainable change.

    Kind regards,

Originally from England, I have lived and worked in many countries but, for the last 18 years, I have called Australia ‘home’. My children, aged 15 and 12, were born here and we now live in the beautiful Northern Rivers.

After many years of working in university, involved primarily in research but also in under- and post-graduate teacher education, I welcomed the opportunity to work in a consultative role at Lindisfarne as I am passionate about the bridging of the research to practice gap. However, I remain as a Research Fellow and I am continuing with my publications and conference presentations in the international arena.

My field of research is around highly able and gifted students, twice-exceptional students (those who are gifted and have a disability that affects learning), and the positive development of academic self-concept for all students.

Academic self-concept is informed by several sociological and psychological influences from the early stages of schooling. It is critical for us all to support positive academic self-concept at the very earliest opportunity because, of all of the aspects of identity, academic self-concept has been shown by research to have the longest influence on our lives including, for example, our career choices, tertiary education, and our life-satisfaction for up to ten years after leaving school.

The nurturing of positive academic self-concept has more immediate benefits also as it supports students’ engagement with school, their peers, and their academic study. An important focus for me is in supporting students to engage, thrive and get the process of realising their life potential.

Lindisfarne Ladies Light up the Stage

Lindisfarne’s talented students lapped up the limelight at the International Women’s Day Youth Leadership Breakfast, Forum and Award Presentation at the Gold Coast Arts Centre last Wednesday, March 8.

The annual International Women’s Day Festival Inc. Youth Leadership Forum and Award Program hosted by non-funded entity, Women at Work, celebrates youth who are our next generation of leaders.

Boasting over 250 Year 11 and 12 youth leaders from 25 local schools, the event focuses on students excelling in education, community endeavours, sport, dance and drama, IT innovation and social justice.

Lindisfarne was represented by Mr Marquardt, Mrs Maynard, Mrs McDowell, Georgia Maynard, Shania Myers, Chanelle Morris, Tara Boyd, Mylee O’Kane and Kobie Enright, with Lillian Dick accepting the International Women’s Day Youth Sports Leadership Award. Piper Harrison was also a nominee but was unavailable to attend the event.

During the event, each school group was partnered with female mentors representing leading organisations offering career opportunities or who are community business leaders offering networking and advice.

Among the local celebrities asked to join the mentoring team was Ironwomen, Courtney Hancock.

“Never a young woman to walk away from a challenge,” Miss Hancock said.Inspiring youth leaders with her story of commitment, focus and generosity, Miss Hancock also said we all need to share some compassion with those less fortunate.

“To achieve a goal and a dream one must make sacrifices and stay focused and positive at all times,” she said.

    Lindisfarne Celebrates International Women’s Day

Our Trade Skill Centre was turned into a puff pastry piazza at Lindisfarne’s Mahers Lane Campus last Wednesday as the School celebrated its fierce females and their achievements in support of International Women’s Day.

Playing a big part in the breakfast celebration was Queensland Women in STEM nominee and former Lindisfarne student, Jordan Debono.

Speaking to the female staff and our Year 11 and 12 girls, Miss Debono shared fond memories of her time with Lindisfarne as well as inspiring stories of the trials and tribulations which have led her on a roller coaster of ups and downs as she had to discover what kind of person she wants to become in her Zoology career and in life.

“If things don’t happen the way you plan them, don’t worry,” Miss Debono said offering encouragement and reassurance to our students.

“Everything happens for a reason [and] a new direction might lead to pathways you never even thought of.”

Such wise words from this very special Lindisfarne local.

Friday 17 March is National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and encourages students to ‘take a stand together’ against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond. 2017 is the third year Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, Kindergarten to Year 6 has participated in the event by engaging in meaningful activities that help teach and consolidate this very important message.

Emphasis is placed throughout the curriculum on creating a safe and happy learning environment for all of our students. Students and teachers are invited to wear an orange accessory (hand band, arm band, socks, necklace) to demonstrate our commitment to keeping Lindisfarne a bullying-free zone.

This Week in the Garden @ Sunshine Avenue

Year 3 has enjoyed the beautiful weather this week and has spent time with Mrs Roberson in the garden learning:

Week 6 has seen each Year 5 and Year 6 class host an Open Classroom – a special time each term when family and friends are invited to school to share in the learning that takes place. It is a short snapshot of a ‘day in the life of a Stage 3 student’ and a time for parents to see what life at school is like for their child/children. Open Classrooms are also terrific opportunities for families to connect with staff and build positive relationships.

Live Below the Line When it comes to solving the world’s biggest problems, the efforts of young people can be easily disregarded. They are often stereotyped and seen as lacking the maturity and knowledge needed to drive change. Australian aid organisation Oaktree aims to reverse this perception.

Oaktree recognises the unique role young people have to play in changing the world, and how they can build and lead a movement. They invest in young Australians, knowing that todays youth are the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.

I am a Student Ambassador for Oaktree’s nationwide campaign ‘Live Below The Line’. This year, I and many of my fellow Lindisfarne students, will be participating in the campaign, which encourages young people to limit their budget for food to $2 a day for five days. It’s a fresh and hands-on way to raise money and awareness about extreme poverty - the daily reality for over half the world’s population.

Growing up between two worlds - the stark poverty of rural Vanuatu and privileged Australia, I’ve always been invested in fostering change. We can all make a difference, even if that difference is small, as little as $2 a day. Be one of those young people who want to drive change; donate or take the challenge with us. Lets take a swing at poverty!

Holly Otto - Year 11Ambassador for Oaktree

As part of the English unit ‘The Wildness of Stories’, Year 5 and their visitors viewed two short films and identified and compared the heroes in each. Together, they discussed heroes in their own families and recorded the qualities of those they identified.

    Parent Drop-off and Pickup

There are three areas of concern. Please act to alleviate these concerns.

    1. Please be considerate of our neighbours and avoid blocking their access to their driveways.

    2. The Student carpark is not the place for collecting students of an afternoon. This is a dangerous area with young students walking behind reversing cars. Please drive through the school and collect in the designated parent pickup zone.

    3. Of a morning please do not drop students off in the lower driveway. This driveway is for buses only and for staff access to parking. We have had a couple of near misses with students and buses.

Year 6 classes invited parents to join us in the Art Room and share in the creation of stunning lanterns that will be used as props in the upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The design and creation of these lanterns also allowed students to demonstrate the knowledge gained during our Visual Arts unit this term titled ‘Colour Theory’.

Japanese News This week we welcome ten students and two staff members from our sister school in Japan, Nabari Seihō. Arriving last Saturday, our visitors were met by ten very excited Lindisfarne families who have welcomed the exchange students into their homes. During their seven day stay, the Nabari students will engage in English lessons as well as speciality cooking and woodwork classes kindly provided by Ms Leistra and Mr Wright. In addition, the students will be integrated into some host classes during the week. On Friday, the Nabari students will give a number of unique cultural presentations on Japan to our students. We wish the students and teachers of Nabari an enjoyable and rewarding visit. Lindisfarne again recognises the invaluable contributions made by our families in kindly hosting these students this year. Eddie MillerJapanese Teacher

Mr Norton’s practice tips for every young musician Our school is lucky enough to have a solid foundation of young musicians, teachers and tutors with an extensive profile of performances. With our busy schedules, here are a few pointers for getting the best out of your rehearsal time. It’s all about the QUALITY, not QUANTITY. Practising isn’t a matter of how many hours you put in, but how many good hours you put in.

Practise with specific GOALS. Set yourself an exercise, scale or song to master by the end of your practice. What do you want to achieve by the end of it?

Begin with the basics. Remember “KIS” (Keep It Simple) and don’t get too far ahead of yourself.

Make sure you have a solid foundation of the basic skills for your instrument first.

Slow it down and break it down.

Break up your practice into smaller sections and practise slowly.

Mix it up and play a variety of things. Variety is the spice of life, and it’s very true in the musical world.

Play your favourite song, or add something completely new to each lesson. Love what you do: Enjoy it!

Record yourself and watch it back. This is a great way for you to see/hear how you are progressing and is always fun to do.

    Speech and Drama Twilight Concert

Under the direction of Mrs Kim Shepherd, some of our Speech and Drama students performed in the first Twilight Concert for 2017. They performed poems individually, in pairs or in larger groups, delighting their audience with what they had learnt in only a few short weeks. Twilight Concerts give students the opportunity to develop their performance skills in a semi-formal, non-threatening environment. Our next Twilight Concert for Term 1 is on Thursday 16 March 2017 and will feature our young instrumental students.

    School Musical

Last week at Assembly, the cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat gave the school a sneak peak as they showcased a song from the musical. Year 11 student Hayley Myers taught the entire cast to sign the words to ‘Any Dream Will Do’. This is the message that many of the students are taking from being part of this amazing musical. It’s uplifting for all working towards a dream and being resilient despite setbacks.

Stage 3 students have been busy making lanterns with their dreams illustrated on them to bring to life a pivotal scene in the musical which is so inspiring.

Year 11 Visual Arts Galleries Excursion

Last Friday, our Year 11 Visual Arts students visited, Tweed Regional Art Gallery, Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah and the Curious Art Cooperative Gallery in Chinderah. This inspiring excursion allowed students to gain an indepth understanding of the role of art galleries in the art world in promoting and presenting artists’ work. Students learnt about the difference between the operating methods of a regional gallery to that of a co-op (public space) gallery, discovering that they may also apply to a public space gallery to promote their own work! They later explored site-specific investigations through drawing techniques and unconventional mark making methods that will be applied to their artmaking practice in class. The information gathered through visiting the galleries, forms the basis for their upcoming assessment task.

    Ursula NashCoordinator of Creative Arts

A vignette is a “short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or character and gives a trenchant impression about that character, an idea, setting and/or object.” Intertextuality, although may manifest in different guises, is using a feature from an earlier text as inspiration for a later piece of work.

When you combine the two you get…a Year 11 Extension English Assessment Task! But more importantly, in that task you get profound, evocative and masterful pieces of writing. Below are short samples that intertextualise the included pieces of art. Although it has been a challenging task, especially as the students grapple with their own expectations and other responsibilities, the crafting of each piece has not only been exceptional, but such a privilege to watch unfold.

Please take a moment to enjoy the musings! A full copy of the task and students writing will be available in the coming weeks.

A gentle whisper caught in the breeze. Carried and caressed by tendrils of air that cradle it. Innocence enfolded in beads of breath. Benevolent thoughts delivered to slumbering minds, overcoming apprehension, exuding warmth and endearment. Floating. Flying. Drawn to the heat of flowing blood that runs beneath soft flesh. To supple lips and limp lids. Undiluted pigment and purity. Subconscious minds oblivious to those that lurk. Protected by a mere wall of wood, balanced precariously on the feeble planks of separation. Raptorial creatures that writhe and sliver. Unforgiving intention hidden under rigid epidermises; concealed beneath serrated arms. Tall reeds climb through sludge. Reaching trees hover. Light exposes all it can touch and yet the shadows linger, threaten. Hidden.

    Vignette by Maria

Eternal silence. The other creatures of the night are restless, snapping their jaws at anything that moves. Too caught up in their hunger to be calm, to be patient, to be smart in their attack. To the rest of the world I am a threat. But for now I am silence. The scenery wraps like a shadow. It keeps my presence a fast held secret. Shaking precariously on its thin legs, the shack before me sways in the harsh wind under the restless sky. I know what lays inside its walls. Someone safe. Someone secure. Someone’s fantasy. A fool’s paradise. I hiss in pleasure. Soon I will be satisfied. I spy with my hungry eye. I spy my prey. I am silence.

    Vignette by Erin

Her somewhat bovine disposition was no contradiction to her personality. Banal. She was a poorly dressed, hollow carcass that was often the most unfavourable sickly rouge. It was the colour that each of us had imagined the glutinous, fatty flesh that bound her bones to her sinews to be. Her eyes refracted no light, no maternal care. Carnal. Cathartic. Veins clotted with hate, her formal species was that of the ‘Housemother’ genus. This was her territory.

Anybody who made eye contact would be reduced to dust in seconds by her elongated talons; talons that protruded from perfume-stained wrists like magenta razors.

    Vignette by Georgie

A gentle breeze slithered through the bitter air, rustling leaves and ruffling hair with its intangible fingers. The ephemeral silver light coming and going as the moon shelters itself behind the passing clouds, a game of hide and seek. My leg is cramping from crouching in the bushes, my muscle screaming in a piercing, aching pain. I don’t move. The grass, littered with previous rain, muffles footsteps as we surround the house. The house sits in the centre of a clearing. The lights are out yet someone is home; hiding in the darkest corner within the hollow walls. The shelter of a duvet cannot save them now. They are lurking. We are lurking. Predators closing in on their victim. I can almost see it; sharp canines glinting in under the moonlight, narrowed eyes watching hungrily. We are animals. A lonesome cloud rolls across the sky, its colossal volume enveloping the moon, greedily absorbing the light for itself.

Left. You’re buffeted to the right. Right. No acknowledgement from either of you. Left. Looking ahead. Right. You find a path through the maze of people. Left. Dodging and sidestepping past them. Right. Their stony faces peer harshly at empty space. Left. The lines on their forehead deepening. Right.

The monotony of life is repeated and another is in the system.

My life is monotonous. Everyday … the same routine. Nothing new. Nothing exciting. Time is falling through my finger tips and it feels like I’m about to find that exciting point. But…I… never…quite…reach…it.

My gaze is down and I keep pace with the monochrome metronomes. Red light. Tide washes in. Green light. Tide washes out. A legion of people sluicing across white washed cement. God I could do with a holiday… ditch the cotton shroud, roast under a sun that would turn my skin umber and bleach the hairs on it silver. A sun more ardent than this - we’d never burn from this feeble incandescence.

The dull hum and drum of the street. The over worked under paid, over tired, migrating hungrily, retiring home. The streets a sea, bathed in melancholy. Drained tired trees, monochromatic lonely buildings, unloved uniforms. The lamps flicker on reluctantly a slow grumble spilling out of their metal. The shadowy figures that stalk slyly in the daylight become apparent, at least to the eye. Although with that golden glimmer another creature crawls tentatively at the pit of every workers unfed stomach. Aching to be allowed releasement, to prowl the streets, to swim in the glorious afternoon sun. Hope.

The after school chess clubs at both campuses are a runaway success. Lindisfarne currently has two very experienced Chess coaches from Gardiner Chess, Alexandra Jule (Women’s International Chess Master) who teaches the Kindergarten to Year 4 students and Shaun Curtis (Deputy Chief of the 2017 Australian Blitz Championship) who teaches Years 5 to 12.

    Ancient History Excursion

Year 11 and Year 12 Ancient History students visited the Museum of Antiquities at the University of Queensland on Wednesday 1 March. They participated in an enquiry -based workshop, handling and examining a variety of ancient artefacts obtained from a villa in Roman England. Hypotheses were offered prolifically but no – Roman homes did not have a room called a vomitorium!

The guided tour of the exhibition focused on the Roman and Greek collections, to assist students in their HSC studies. Small and large pieces brought past people to life through a variety of mediums including art, coins, pottery and ceramics, bronze and glass.

Displays were interesting and informative, all lodged under low lighting and in fixed temperatures, to best preserve centuries-old antiquities.

Lions Youth of the Year – Zone Final

Mylee O’Kane competed in the Zone Final of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest that was held on Saturday 4 March. Whilst she did not proceed through the next round, she is commended for her ability to impress the audience with her oral communication skills. Mylee made the following comments about this competition:

“I’m always told to try something new and the Lions Youth of the Year Quest was definitely that. Overall, the experience was slightly frightening but it definitely had its benefits. The most intimidating part of the competition was the impromptu speeches - something I was able to overcome in the end. It is a great opportunity to participate in the panel interviews and learn to think on your feet. I would definitely recommend entering this competition, as it was a great experience.”

As part of the Lindisfarne Parenting Series, parents and guardians will be given the opportunity to attend seminars each term that explore how we can support the social, emotional and academic development of our students.

The topic for the second presentation for 2017 is Confident and Capable.

Lindisfarne is excited to announce that they have engaged Dr Judith Locke to present this seminar. Dr Locke is an international researcher, counsellor and the best-selling author of ‘The Bonsai Child’. This seminar is aimed at equipping parents at all stages of schooling (Kindergarten to Year 12) to assist and coach children to build confidence and capabilities at school.

“Confident and Capable works with families, schools and organisations to provide proven solutions to cope with the ups and downs of life. Through our dynamic training and one on one service we have been able to improve many people’s quality of life – at home, at work and in their most important relationships.” Dr Judith Locke.

Presented by Dr Judith Locke parents are encouraged to attend this free seminar.
