Department of Music – this includes the regular concert series in the Barber Institute, University Music concerts presented by the University Music Society and the Department of Music, and a number of special events. In addition to the 20-plus concerts on offer there are also fantastic opportunities to get more involved - you can come and sing at the annual University Community Day (6 Sept), join a rehearsal or jam session at Music in the Making (27 Sept), and come along to Young Conductors Day on 18 October.

We celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Barber Evening Concert series this autumn, welcoming the Gramophone Award-winning Binchois Consort on

28 October, the superb quartet-lab on 25 November with a programme that includes some ‘chamber music surprises’, and we launch Birmingham International Piano Festival 2016, when Pascal and Ami Rogé perform a combination of solo piano works and music written for four hands/one piano on 9 December.

University Music concerts include the Music Society’s two orchestras, and the University Chorus is joined by Birmingham Symphonic Brass for an evening of British music. There are simply too many wonderful concerts to mention here so enjoy reading this guide; we hope you can join us at our concerts and events.

Spanish mezzo-soprano Clara Mouriz is a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, she was an Independent Opera/Wigmore Hall Fellow, is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Apollo Saxophone Quartet

The Apollo Saxophone Quartet celebrates its 30th year in 2015 having been formed by Royal Northern College of Music graduates in 1985. The Quartet has performed worldwide, recorded commissions with major and independent labels, and has made the largest single contribution to the repertoire for saxophonequartetintheUK.Inadditiontoaninternational recital profile, the Quartet is active in the field of education. As part of their visit to Birmingham they will be working with the Music Society’s Saxophone Choir.

If you are aged 18-25 and interested in leading a choir, or already have some conducting experience and would like to learn more, come and extend your choral leadership skills by joining ABCD tutor Julian Wilkins for a stimulating day of active participation, observation and ideas. This one-day course is designed to lay firm foundations for anyone who has an interest in learning to conduct singers of any kind, or who has recently started to lead a choir. No previous conducting experience is necessary, but the course is also suitable for those who already have some experience in leading choral music and would like to develop their conductingandvocaltechniques.

The Binchois Consort mark the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt (25th October, 1415), one of England’s greatest military victories. The programme also focuses on its victor, Henry V. Great warrior though he was, Henry – typically for his time – was also a major patron of the arts, and a contemplative and devout figure seeking the support and patronage of favoured saints. He was even a skilled composer, two of whose works have survived. The programme presents both sides of Henry: the redoubtable military and political figure celebrated in the famous Agincourt carol, in great state motets, and in chants and acclamations composed directly for Lancastrian coronations; and the man of piety revealed in his own music for the Mass, and in the polyphonic Mass and rhymed office chants for St John of Bridlington. Like early fifteenth-century life itself, the music of Henry’s time is colourful and surprisingly varied: a world of energy, rhythm, drive and brilliance.

King Edward’s School and King Edward VI High School give their annual concert in the Barber Concert Hall presenting a selection of their talented young musicians. French violinist Nathaniel Vallois presents a programme of works for violin and piano from his home country and Belgium, with Irish pianist David Quigley. Both musicians are tutors at Birmingham Conservatoire and have extensive recital schedules across Europe. In addition, David is Artistic Director of Newry Chamber Music, whilst Nathaniel is also in demand as a tutor at a number of international summer schools and at the Purcell School.

Simon Halsey leads Birmingham University Singers and University Women’s Choir in a challenging and thought-provoking programme of choral music. The concert will feature a handful of choral favourites, as well as performances of hauntingly beautiful contemporary music, such as Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas, Stars by Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds in which the singers will play tuned water bowls, and Tarik O’Regan’s Night City, which will feature both choirs singing en masse with percussion accompaniment.

In addition, the University Women’s Choir will perform Autumn Rain, a composition by retired University of Birmingham lecturer, John Joubert, with text by D H Lawrence.

Since 1996 Marcel Worms has invited composers from across the world to write for him. This body of works, all blues-based, currently stands at an impressive 200-plus pieces by over fifty composers. In this concert Marcel presents the music of composers from the Netherlands, the USA, Kuwait, Macedonia, Syria and Russia, plus University of Birmingham Professor of Composition, Michael Zev Gordon. Marcel will be giving a workshop in the Bramall Music Building following this performance with Department of Music composition students and you are welcome to attend this session as an observer.

Chorus and brass is a wonderfully British combination of sounds. In this concert the University Chorus will be joined by the University’s ten-part brass ensemble, Symphonic Brass, to present works by three of the most popular British choral composers; Vaughan Williams, Rutter and Purcell. Interspersed between these pieces, Symphonic Brass will perform a variety of intimate brass pieces, led by their conductor Stephen Roberts.

The Music Society’s Philharmonic Orchestra open their autumn concert with a performance of Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture, a work composed in 1880 on the occasion of the composer receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau. Haydn’s final

symphony, No. 104 in D, is then presented along with Sibelius’s most popular and most frequentlyrecordedsymphonies,No.2inD.This symphony was described as ‘An absolute masterpiece, one of the few symphonic creations of our time that points in the same direction as the symphonies of Beethoven.’ by music critic, Karl Flodin in 1903, the year after its first performance.

Pascal Rogé is one of the great interpreters of French music - his name is synonymous with the best playing of French repertoire in the world today. For several years, Pascal has enjoyed playing recitals for four hands/two pianos with his partner in life and in music Ami Rogé. How to bookUniversity Music concerts Barber Evening Concerts

Concessions Concessionary rates are offered to the disabled, the unwaged, and patrons aged sixty years and above.

Barber Friends Friends of The Barber are entitled to purchase tickets for Barber Evening Concerts at specially discounted Barber Friends’ rates.

Students Student rates include children aged 16 and under unless otherwise stated.

Disabled patrons Limited blue badge holder parking is available: please speak to staff when booking your tickets.

Please note: We reserve the right to halt ticket sales five minutes before performances begin in order to ensure a prompt start. Late-comers will be admitted at a suitable point in the programme at the Venue Manager’s discretion. We reserve the right to substitute artists or vary programmes in unavoidable circumstances.

0121 414 7333You can purchase tickets for any Barber Evening Concert at the reception desk in The Barber Institute of Fine Arts during normal opening hours or by calling the number above. Monday to Friday: 10am-12.30pm, 2.30pm-4.30pm. Saturday and Sunday: 11am-4.30pm. On days when there is an evening performance the Barber box office remains open until 7.25pm.
