Michael Collins’ dazzling virtuosity and sensitive musicianship has earned him recognition as one of today’s most distinguished soloists and as a leading exponent of his instrument. In 2007 Michael received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award in recognition of the pivotal role that he has played in expanding the clarinet music, commissioning and premiering repertoire by some of today’s most highly regarded composers. Michael performs this concert with his duo partner David Quigley, himself an award winning pianist who has enjoyed a varied career as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.

The period from January to April is one of the busiest in the University concerts calendar, and this Spring we present more concerts than ever! There are not many universities that can boast not one but two outstanding concert halls and, having celebrated the 80th birthday of The Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the first anniversary of the opening of the Bramall Music Building last year, we have programmed a wide selection of performances in the Elgar Concert Hall, Barber Concert Hall, and The Dome recital room.

The concert series in the Barber continues to thrive and we welcome internationally acclaimed artists such as Michael Collins (clarinet) and the Ehnes String Quartet, as well as leading early music orchestra, The English Concert, in the Barber Evening Concert Series, whilst the Friday lunchtime series features some of the UK’s rising stars.

In the Bramall Music Building we present Julian Lloyd Webber (cello), a variety of University choirs and ensembles, student recitals and the Jazzlines foyer series. We also welcome the Birmingham Choral Union and Birmingham Festival Choral Society. You can get involved by signing up for Music Experience Day on 16th February, as we form an orchestra and chorus for an exhilarating day of music making. Finally, an exciting addition to the Spring programme is a family concert on 19th April, ‘When Yesterday we Met’, an interactive and captivating performance exploring storytelling through song.

Joseph Houston piano

Joseph Houston is a passionate performer of 20th and 21st century piano music and has given world premiere performances of music by Charlotte Bray, Christian Mason, John Stringer, Thomas Simaku, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, and Colin Matthews. He is a member of the prestigious Park Lane Group Young Artists scheme and a recipient of the Musicians' Benevolent Fund’s ‘Emerging Excellence Award’. He gave his debut solo recital at Wigmore Hall in November 2013, where he gave a performance of Michael Zev Gordon’s On Memory.

Winner of the 2013 Kathleen Ferrier Award, Gareth John held a choral scholarship at St John’s College, Cambridge, before taking a place at London’s Royal Academy of Music. In his final year he won the Royal Academy of Music Patrons’ Award and was awarded the Silver Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Gareth is passionate about art song and has performed in the Songsmiths series at St John’s Smith Square and gave his debut Wigmore Hall recital in 2012. He is joined by one of the UK’s leading art song pianists, Joseph Middleton.

BEAST welcomes two of acousmatic music’s pioneers, François Bayle and Francis Dhomont, as part of a weekend celebrating both the heritage and future of electroacoustic studio-based composition. The CBSO Centre is transformed into a multichannel sound system venue for a weekend of five sessions featuring new works from international composers, Saturday evening performances of music by Bayle and Dhomont, and a concert featuring new works by Birmingham-based composers.

A familiar face to Birmingham audiences, CBSO cellist Richard Jenkinson is joined by his duo partner Benjamin Frith in a performance of Benjamin Britten’s 1961 sonata, a technically demanding work commissioned by Rostropovich, and Frank Bridge’s emotive two-movement sonata, written amid the turbulence of the Great War.

Trumpet player Jay Phelps leads his trio, featuring Reuben James on piano and Mark Lewandowski on bass. Louise Alder soprano Joseph Middleton piano

Joseph Middleton returns to the Barber Concert Hall with the Second Prize winner in the 2013 Kathleen Ferrier Award, Louise Alder. Louise made her Barber debut in the 2009 Barber Opera, Agrippina, and has been described as ‘a radiant performer’ in the Financial Times and ‘engrossing’ in the Birmingham Post. She recently graduated from the International Opera School with the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal as the inaugural Kiri Ti Kanawa scholar. With an exciting schedule ahead of her, Louise makes her Glyndebourne Festival Opera debut next year and joins the ensemble at the Frankfurt Opera in September.

Exploiting the architectural and acoustic idiosyncrasies of the Ikon Gallery’s top floor, BEAST presentsnew works by Angela da Ponte, David Ibbett, Norah Lorway, and Jonty Harrison. Simon Halsey leads the University Chorus in a performance of one of the cornerstones of the chorus and orchestra repertory, Mozart’s final work, the Requiem Mass. In contrast the Philharmonic Orchestra perform Copland’s popular Appalachian Spring and Mahler’s Blumine, a work originally penned in 1884, considered by many to be a gesture of love from the composer to Johanna Richter.

They perform contemporary arrangements from the jazz repertoire and original pieces.

Making their debut concert performance, Birmingham Symphonic Brass is the University’s most recent ensemble to be formed since the Department of Music’s move to the Bramall Music Building. Taking their inspiration from the renowned Philip Jones Brass Ensemble this group, under the direction of Stephen Roberts, perform an engaging mix of repertoire for ten players. The University Brass Band then gives the second half of this concert under the baton of student conductors.

Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time

Manchester-based Chetham’s School of Music gives its annual concert as part of the Barber Lunchtime series and performs Messiaen’s iconic quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano.

Winner of the 2013 Brant International Pianoforte Competition, Alexander Panfilov performs a selection from Debussy’s Estampes, along with the second edition of Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2. Hailing from Moscow, Alexander studied in his home city before winning a scholarship in 2012 to study to study at the Royal Northern College of Music. Alexander has won numerous prizes and was also awarded first prize at the Arcangelo Speranza competition in Taranto (Italy) in 2013.

Members of Birmingham University Singers and the University Women’s Choir are joined by the award winning Binchois Consort for a performance of Renaissance motets by composers including Isaac, Mouton, Brumel and Obrecht under the direction of Andrew Kirkman. Simon Halsey the leads a performance of David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion a setting of Hans Christian Andersen’s fable, scored for voices and percussion, in the format of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Lang elevates the suffering of the little match girl with poignant, evocative music, reflecting the comparison between Andersen’s original fable and the suffering of Jesus.

The University Symphony Orchestra performs the eighth of Vaughan Williams's nine symphonies, in which the composer shows a new desire for experimentation with tone and colour. This work includes a march-style movement solely for the wind section, followed by a movement for strings, and features a wider variety of percussion instruments than utilised in the previous seven symphonies. Recent graduate Simeon Liley’s new work, Edgbaston in the Rain, was the winning entry for the 2013 UMS Composition Competition, written specifically to feature in a concert with the Vaughan Williams, whilst Joshua Rohde gives a performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto following his success in the UMS Concerto Competition.

The English Concert, one of the world’s leading period instrument ensembles, performs a programme entitled ‘Godfather, Father and Son’, focusing on works by Telemann, J S Bach and C P E Bach. Since being founded by Trevor Pinnock in 1972, The English Concert has worked at the forefront of the Baroque and Classical music revival. It comprises many of Europe’s finest baroque musicians, including Lawrence Cummings, who directs this performance from the harpsichord, and featured instrumentalists Alfonso Leal del Ojo, Lisa Beznosiuk and Katharina Spreckelsen.

The UMS Big Band is joined by the UMS Jazz Collective for their first gig in popular city-centre jazz venue, The Yardbird. Benjamin Baker violin Carole Presland piano

New Zealand born violinist Benjamin Baker was selected for Young Concert Artists Trust representation in 2013 following an outstanding performance in the YCAT competition final in Wigmore Hall. He gives his first concert in the Barber with pianist, Carole Presland, and together they perform Richard Strauss’s sonata for violin and piano along with one of Heinrich Ernst’s virtuosic etudes for solo violin.

Mozart Requiem

One of Birmingham’s oldest established choirs, Birmingham Choral Union, returns to the Elgar Concert Hall to perform one of the best loved of all choral works, Mozart's last work, the magnificent Requiem Mass. Indeed the fact that the piece was unfinished at Mozart’s death has spawned a number of conflicting theories as to ‘who wrote what’; fortunately the beauty and power of the music leave an unforgettable impression on the listener, regardless of the true origin of the various movements. The Requiem is accompanied by another great choral work, a setting of Psalm 42 by Mendelssohn, which is not often performed yet deserves to be much better known.

Kodály Missa Brevis

The Seven Last Words is Haydn’s most profound choral work. In it we hear none of the bubbling and uplifting choruses of The Creation, The Seasons or his Masses, but an intense, deeply religious progression of predominantly chordal movements depicting Christ’s final words from the cross.

Kodály’s Missa Brevis is a lyrical and highly Romantic gem from one of the most inventive of choral composers.

From fables and Greek myths to tales of the extraordinary and the everyday, songs have always been a supremely powerful way to tell stories. Pianist and presenter Dominic Harlan is joined by two singers for a stunningly original concert that includes music by Schubert, Rachmaninov, Brahms and Ives.

By turns hilarious, horrifying, moving and profound, this sixty minute concert guides novices into the world of each song while challenging connoisseurs to find new and unexpected twists in familiar repertoire.

You can also book tickets for these concerts by calling 0121 414 7333 and make payment on the night of the performance.

How to find us

The University of Birmingham is located in south-west Birmingham, approximately 3 miles from the city centre.

By Train Local trains operated by London Midland run from Birmingham New Street to University Station, a ten-minute walk from the Barber Institute and the Bramall Music Building. Check train times at www.londonmidland.com

By Bus There are frequent buses (61, 63 and X64) operated by National Express West Midlands from the city centre to the bottom of Edgbaston Park Road, where you should alight.

By Car South Car Park (off Edgbaston Park Road) is a five minute walk away. Charges apply Monday-Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm. Outside these times FREE parking is available on campus around The Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

Please note: We reserve the right to halt ticket sales five minutes before performances begin in order to ensure a prompt start. Late-comers will be admitted at a suitable point in the programme at the Venue Manager’s discretion.
