  • A Ticket to InfinityInner Space Music touring England, Nov-Dec 2015: Jazz Beyond the Limits

Would you like to buy a ticket to infinity? There may be limits to our known Universe, but BritishJazz has repeatedly shown that there are few barriers to musical imagination.

This autumn Inner Space Music, led by Loz Speyer, are taking their highly gregarious brand ofimprovisational jazz on a countrywide tour supported by Arts Council England. It's likely to be an amazing journey with a quintet full of sparky ideas and original thinking, further enhanced by knowledge and experience. All five musicians are members of the thriving London music scene, working in composition-based repertoire and improvised jazz, one of the most exciting live experiences in music.

The music they make is very much of the moment, but it's audibly constructed from the DNA of the jazz tradition. Sinuous rhythmic changes are wedded to subliminal references that synthesize trad, be-bop, straight-ahead and free jazz into improvised, yet elegantly constructed experiments. The aptly titled Rocket Science and the exuberant, playful From A to B to Infinity are cases in point.

Critics and commentators are inclined to agree: veteran music writer Karl Dallas described a performance as, "One of the happiest evenings I've heard in jazz for many a long night! while Mike Butler highly recommended the band in the London Metro as "Serious fun of the first order!

Trumpeter Loz Speyer and saxophonist Chris Biscoe are both familiar figures in UK jazz. Speyer is a genre-bending composer whose projects include Cuban-Jazz cross-over bands Time Zone and Projecto Evocacin, and the innovative 12-piece Rare Mix. Loz Speyer has also featured in high profile appearances with Simo Lagnawi, Sarah-Jane Morris, Yann Tiersen, among many others.

In the course of his long career, multi-instrumentalist Chris Biscoe has led, collaborated and performed in a myriad of bands and ensembles. He has contributed significantly to the work of Mike Westbrook, George Russell, The Brotherhood of Breath, Andy Sheppard, Harry Beckett, Kenny Wheeler and the New York Composers Orchestra to name but a few.

The line-up is completed by Rachel Musson on tenor and soprano saxophones, Gary Wilcox on drums and Olie Brice on double bass. Musson is already noted for her remarkable expressive range in a number of diverse projects, notably her acclaimed trio album with Liam Noble and Mark Sanders. Wilcox is a drummer whose work with Jim Mullen, Ian Shaw, Chris Batchelor and Iain Bellamy encompasses light, shade, vitality and sensitivity, all at a moments notice. Olie Brices playing with the likes of Toby Delius and Paul Dunmall consolidates his position as one of the top improvisers in Britain; his strong, lyrical bass playing forms an integral part in trios with James Allsopp and Ingrid Laubrock, Riverloam Trio, the Nick Malcolm Quartet and Dee Byrne's Entropi.

Inner Space Music play Jazz with a rare warmth and immediacy, enriched by deep affinities with the likes of Ellington, Mingus, Monk, Ornette Coleman, Steve Lacy et al. A sense of fun is at the heart of the improvisational agenda, and is evident in these wry and perceptive melodies. This is an excursion full of infinite possibilities, where half the pleasure is simply in the act of travelling.
