Autumn Term 2012 Newsletter & Update F T
Welcome to Issue 3 of the Portsmouth Music Hub newsletter.
Thank you to those of you who have provided us with feedback, information and suggestions, all of which are enabling us to keep moving the Hub forward. There continues to be significant national and international interest in the Hub and there are articles that examine the work of Portsmouth Music Hub in two national publications this month, Teach Primary and the Music Education UK magazine.
The Hub funding period commenced at the start of August and we have received the first slice of the funding that is enabling the Hub to provide whole class instrumental teaching and free instruments for children across the city, free oboe lessons, free choirs, bands, orchestras and rock groups for children and young people and a wide range of events that Partners can get involved with. Information is posted on the website and also in these newsletters.
There are a significant number of Partners joining together as part of the Hub - the Partners are grouped according to their role in the Hub. There is a Partners meeting on Tuesday 23rd October, at Portsmouth Guildhall, 16.30 - 18.00.
We look forward to meeting you at musical events in the run up to Christmas - if you would like to get involved in any events you see on the website please contact the Portsmouth Music Office on 02392 375655 or at [email protected]
Here's to a term of excellent music making for children, young people and our city's community!Best wishes,
Head of Portsmouth Music ServiceLead Partner in Portsmouth Music Hub

St John’s College Chapel Choir tour Italy
While many school children were enjoying the summer break, members of the St John’s Chapel Choir were busy with two tours – the first to Windsor, and the second to Italy to sing in some of the most famous Cathedrals in the world.
Their first tour took them to Windsor Castle, where they were Choir in Residence for a third year running. This gave the Choir a suitable opportunity to practice and perfect their Latin music before their performances in Italy – and what fantastic performances they were.
Two days into the tour and the Choir sung in Pisa Cathedral followed by an impromptu performance in Florence Cathedral on Thursday. On day five the Choir sang Choral Mass in Assisi Cathedral and after their evening meal left Assisi for Rome.
Parents, staff and the Headmaster joined the Choir and the group of supporters in Rome on Saturday, and witnessed their first performance of the weekend as the Choir sang on the Emperors Balcony of the Colosseum. They were applauded by hundreds of tourists who had stopped to listen and take photographs. Niall Peachey, who has given over 500 performances with the Choir, said, “It was amazing singing and seeing people watching us and applauding.”
The next stop was the Papal Archbasilica - Rome Cathedral of St John Lateran, where the acoustics of the Cathedral ensured the Choir gave one of their best concerts to date. The concert was followed by the evening Vigil Mass – another performance for the Choir to be proud of.
Sunday was undoubtedly the biggest day of the Choir’s singing history as they lead the Pontifical High Mass at St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican, at 10.30am followed by High Mass at 12pm. Each Mass was witness by approximately 4000 people, but this didn’t deter the Choir who performed superbly and without fault. Matthew Jeffrey performed a solo of the Psalm, and commented “I was very very nervous – but it was unbelievable, and I will remember it for the rest of my life.”
Head of Choir Oliver Clark said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed today – it was such a fantastic experience. Singing ‘I was Glad’ was the high point for me as we all gave it everything we had, it was amazing.”
George Gissing has been in the Choir for a year, and his performance at the Vatican was the first time his dad had heard him sing. George commented, “Performing at Mass in the Vatican was incredible – mind-blowing, I can’t really put it into words.”

St John’s College Chapel Choir tour Italy....
After their gruelling itinerary the boys were able to unwind and relax for a couple of days, before attending an audience with the Pope. The Choir sang the Lord’s Prayer in Latin in front of the Pope at his private residence: Castel Gandolfo. Their last performance was in Milan Cathedral before they returned to Portsmouth on Saturday 1 September, ready to prepare for the start on term on Wednesday!

The Band took part in rehearsals with one of the 3rd Year Band Masters, visited the museum which featured many historic musical instruments, performed at the start of the Gala concert and listened to top class performances from an array of Army bands.
Gemma, aged 9,: "It was amazing day - It was so exciting being able to play my clarinet at such at incredible place with so many talented musicians."
Scott Andrews, Chair of the Friends of Portsmouth Music Hub attended the concert and said: "What a privilege for our young people to take part in such a prestigious event.
