GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS
Faculty
The Faculty of Economics is located in the ancient monastery of San Felice, which was founded in the 8th century AD by the last Longobard King, Desiderio, and his wife Ansa. Gradual restoration of the monastery buildings is under way, and Faculty students already have access to the highly distinctive reading room, which used to be the monastery’s church. Two finely decorated medieval tombs were found inside the church in 1996; one of the tombs contained the earthly remains of the Abbess Ariperga. The room also houses graduation ceremonies. The Faculty Library, which ceilings are decorated with medieval bas-reliefs and frescos, is also situated in the monastery premises.
HistoryThe Faculty of Economics is heir to the original Italian schools of commerce, which were founded in the second half of the 18th century, and subsequently transformed into the various Faculties of Economics and Commerce. This title was given to the Faculty that was founded in Pavia in 1964, and it remained thus until very recently. By today’s standards, the Faculty’s initial educational goals were limited, and graduates were prepared for 2 broad career paths: one in the traditional professions, i.e. managerial positions in banks and other for-profit companies, with an emphasis on commerce and related procedures; the other in the public sector, which required particular competence in law and accounting. Subsequently, the constant burgeoning of world-wide markets, the rapid development of financial markets and the expansion of new information and communication technologies multiplied the professional profiles required by Faculty graduates. In addition to changing its name, the Faculty has faced the need to adapt itself to the new requirements, and hence to diversify the training it offers. Accordingly, and in alignment with the transformations affecting all companies, new three-year undergraduate degree courses, such as Marketing & E-Business, were added to the more general and traditional ones, namely Economics and Enterprise Economics. At the same time, the general and interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty has not been obscured. Over the 3-year undergraduate period, the Faculty offers a general education in the basic notions of Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, History and Law.Address:

THE DEAN’S INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
The so-called “Bologna process”, aiming at harmonizing higher education systems in Europe, has promoted a strong effort of internationalization in Italian Universities, that started developing academic curricula, specifically devised to allow integrated mobility programs promoting competition and equal opportunities between students and graduates in all European countries. With regards to the Italian experience, at present a little less than 50% of foreign students are concentrated in the Universities of Lombardy. The Faculties of Economics in the region are at the top of the place-list of faculties with the highest attendance of foreign students. In particular, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Pavia records a share of enrolled foreign students greater than 10%, thanks to the combined attraction of this field of academic studies and the peculiar features of the University town, described below in more detail. The international opportunities successfully offered by the Faculty of Economics until now, besides the traditional LLP-Erasmus and Erasmus placement projects, are the ISEP (International Student Exchange Program), the EMBS (European Master of Business Sciences) program and the double- degree program, jointly operated with renowned European higher education institutions. Starting from the academic year 2009/2010 the Faculty will offer a new opportunity for both Italian and foreign students: a graduate course (Laurea Magistralis, substantially equivalent to an anglo-saxon M.Phil. course) labelled «International Business and Economics», entirely taught in English. This course possesses all the requisites of a solidly founded international academic proposal addressed to students wishing to improve their knowledge of business and economic studies at the graduate level. Indeed the first pre-requisite for the success of higher education initiatives is represented by a course of studies in line with internationally accepted qualitative standards, integrated in a network of foreign Universities. In this perspective the University of Pavia belongs to the prestigious Coimbra Group of oldest European Universities and can boast a wide variety of cooperation agreements with more than 500 Universities and research centres around the world. The second pre-requisite for success of international programs is the existence of peculiar reception capabilities of the local University structures. In this perspective the University of Pavia can rely upon a network of 15 historical colleges, which can host foreign students and teachers, contributing to promote a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment and facilitating formal and informal meetings between people designed to enrich their academic experience. Moreover in 2005 the IUSS (Institute for Advanced Studies) was created to offer talented young students the opportunity to widen their specific academic curriculum with additional courses, seminars and other educational activities. Hence the 9 academic Faculties, the colleges and the IUSS constitute an integrated system of University structures, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, almost unique in the Italian panorama. And finally, last but not least, the reception capability of the town of Pavia is relevant for the success of higher education initiatives, because the learning

experience of students during their University studies is based not only on the notions and skills learnt, but also on the development of social, interpersonal relationships and the development of a wide spectrum of cultural and interdisciplinary interest (as the original term Universitas Studiorum actually means). In this perspective, the town of Pavia, located only a few miles away from Milan and its airports, with its historical heritage, its cultural opportunities, its cultural and social events and its excellent quality of life represents an unrivalled place for University studies. In conclusion I believe that the above described features of the University of Pavia ensure that the new-born graduate course in «International Business and Economics» will fulfill the expectations of foreign students aiming to improve their business or advanced economics studies in Pavia and will contribute to promote and expand the international dimension of our Faculty.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE 2nd CYCLE DEGREE COURSES (LAUREA MAGISTRALE)
There are two kinds of requirements for admission: a. appropriate personal preparationb. minimum number of ECTS credits in each specific field of study
(business, economics, mathematics-statistics, law, English, IT)
a. With reference to the first requirement, for each course of the second degree a test of admission is scheduled. It will be held either a written or an oral test, from whom students whose graduation note is at least 90/110 or the media is equal or superior to 23/30 are exempted.
b. With reference to the second requirement, students must have taken exams with a minimum number of ECTS credits in each specific field of study. These requirements are different according to the selected course, as follows.
MEFI - Laurea magistrale in Economia, Finanza e Integrazione Internazionale (Master in Economics, Finance and International Integration – teaching in Italian).To enrol in this course it has to be met the following minimum academic requirements:
a. At least 21 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the economic area: SECS-P/01, SECS-P/02, SECS-P/03, SECS-P/05, SECS-P/06;
b. At least 15 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the mathematics-statistics area: SECS-S/01, SECS-S/02, SECS-S/03, SECS-S/05, SECS-S/06, MAT/06;
c. At least 9 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the business area: SECS-P/07, SECS-P/08, SECS-P/09, SECS-P/10, SECS-P/11;
d. At least 6 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the law area: IUS/01, IUS/02, IUS/04, IUS/05, IUS/07, IUS/08, IUS/09, IUS/10, IUS/12
e. At least 6 CFU (ECTS credits) referable to English courses;f. At least 3 CFU (ECTS credits) referable to the IT area.
For the satisfaction of the least curricular requisite related to the knowledge of the English language, international linguistic certifications that attest a knowledge of the English language equal or superior to the level B1 of the Common European Framework (First Certificate in English) can be valued, both for comprehension and expression abilities and for reading ability.

It is admitted a tolerance in comparison to the previous minimum academic requirements from a) to f) within a maximum of 10%, i.e. 6 ECTS. Such border of tolerance can be indifferently applied to one or to all fields of study. These minimum academic requirements – from a) to f) – are intended to be automatically satisfied by all the students belonging to degree classes (lauree triennali) in “Scienze Economiche” (Class XXVIII) and to “Scienze dell’Economia e della Gestione aziendale” (Class XVII), founded by the didactic arrangement ex D.M. 509/99, and to “Scienze dell’Economia e della Gestione Aziendale (Class L-18) and to “Scienze Economiche” (Class L-33), founded by the didactic arrangement ex D.M. 270/04.In order to allow the access to graduates with high preparation, correspondent to a note of 110/110 e lode (magna cum laude), or equivalent for the titles achieved in foreign countries, coming from formative runs not perfectly coherent with the demanded requirements, i.e. in the following graduation classes L-7 (civil and environmental engineering- ingegneria civile e ambientale), L-8 (information engineering - ingegneria dell’informazione), L-9 (industrial engineering - ingegneria industriale), L-27 (chemistry – scienze e tecnologie chimiche), L-30 (physics- scienze e tecnologie fisiche), L-35 (mathematics - scienze matematiche), L-41 (statistics - statistica) or other equivalent courses for other degrees achieved in foreign countries, these students can enroll independently from the satisfaction of the minimum academic requirements. Student that satisfy the minimum academic requirements a)-f) but whose graduation note is lower than 90/110 have to sit an admission test, which is an exam to verify the graduate’s knowledge about the following subjects:
- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics- Mathematics for Economics - Statistics
MEGI – Laurea Magistrale in Economia e Gestione delle imprese (Master in Economics and Business Management – teaching in Italian)To enroll at this course it has to be met the following academic requirements:
a. At least 18 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the business area: SECS-P/07 and SECS-P/08
b. At least 12 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the economic area: SECS-P/01 and SECS-P/02
c. At least 12 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of mathematics-statistics area: SECS-S/01 and SECS-S/06
d. At least 6 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the law area: IUS/01, IUS/04, IUS/09
e. At least 3 CFU (ECTS credits) referable to the IT area.f. At least 6 CFU (ECTS credits) referable to English courses;

The test of admission aims to verify the adequacy of the personal preparation of the student and consists on the solution of questions to multiple answers; there is only one correct answer among the three listed for every question. The subjects of the test of admission are the followings:
- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics- Mathematics and Mathematical Finance- Statistics- Business Economics (Economia Aziendale)- Business and Management- Commercial Law and Private Law (Principles)
MELI – Laurea Magistrale in Economia e Legislazione d’Impresa (Master in Economics and Business Law – Teaching in Italian) To enroll at this course it has to be met the following academic requirements:
a. At least 18 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the business area: SECS-P/07 and SECS-P/08
b. At least 12 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of the economic area: SECS-P/01, SECS-P/02, SECS-P/03 and SECS-P/06
c. At least 12 CFU (ECTS credits) in one or more of the following fields of mathematics-statistics area: SECS-S/01 and SECS-S/06

d. At least 6 CFU (ECTS credits) referable to English coursesIt is admitted a tolerance in comparison to the previous requirements from a) to f) within a maximum of 11%, i.e. 5 ECTS. Such border of tolerance can be indifferently applied to one or to all fields of study, except those referred to the requirement at point d), for who there isn’t any border of tolerance. These minimum academic requirements – from a) to f) – are intended to be automatically satisfied by all the students belonging to degree classes (lauree triennali) in “Scienze Economiche” (Class XXVIII) and to “Scienze dell’Economia e della Gestione aziendale” (Class XVII), founded by the didactic arrangement ex D.M. 509/99, and to “Scienze dell’Economia e della Gestione Aziendale (Class L-18) and to “Scienze Economiche” (Class L-33), founded by the didactic arrangement ex D.M. 270/04, and graduated at the University of Pavia. For graduates of these degree classes coming from other Universities will be necessary to verify the respect of the minimum academic requirement corresponding to courses of English language, as it is following specified.For the recognition of the ECTS referred to the courses of English language they are considered equivalent to 6 ECTS the international certifications that attest a knowledge of the English language equal or superior to the level B2 of the Common European Framework (First Certificate in English) can be valued, both for comprehension and expression abilities and for reading ability. The international certification TOEFL iBt Total equal or higher than level B2 (87-109) is considered equivalent to the level B2 of the Common European Framework.In order to allow the access to graduates with high preparation, correspondent to a note of 110/110 e lode (magna cum laude), or equivalent for the titles achieved in foreign countries, coming from formative runs not perfectly coherent with the demanded requirements, i.e. in the following graduation classes L-7 (civil and environmental engineering- ingegneria civile e ambientale), L-8 (information engineering - ingegneria dell’informazione), L-9 (industrial engineering - ingegneria industriale), L-27 (chemistry – scienze e tecnologie chimiche), L-30 (physics- scienze e tecnologie fisiche), L-35 (mathematics - scienze matematiche), L-41 (statistics - statistica) or other equivalent courses for other degrees achieved in foreign countries, these students can enroll independently from the satisfaction of the minimum academic requirements, provided that they satisfy the requirement of knowledge of the English language. If they do not satisfy these requirements, they have to sit the admission exam, with reference only to the English test.In order to allow the access to graduates with high preparation, correspondent to a note of 110/110 e lode (magna cum laude), or equivalent for the titles achieved in foreign countries, coming from formative runs not perfectly coherent with the demanded requirements, as long as they don’t belong to the classes previously stated, the Didactic Commission might decide to make different tests or different run of entry.The test of admission aims to verify the adequacy of the personal preparation of the student in the following subjects:

Computer roomsCoordinator: Dr. Annalisa Golfredistudents can use the two computer rooms and wireless Internet connection for laptops. In order to access the computer rooms and the wireless Internet connection, the student has to show to the Faculty personnel a document that states that he/she has registered for one or more of the courses offered by the Faculty. All computers are connected to the Faculty server, and students have access to e-mail, Internet, laser printers and a scanner. The computers have software for word-processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentations, as well as specialized software for statistics, econometrics and mathematics. LibraryThe Faculty of Economics Library contains about 40,000 volumes and 300 periodicals related to the fields of economics, politics, management, econometrics, statistics, mathematics and law. Most of the books are placed on open bookshelves. Users have freely access to the material after having left bags and folders in the lockers at the entrance of the library. For a limited number of special volumes, users have to deposit their identity card to the librarian. Periodicals, statistics, encyclopedias, dictionaries, codes and other special publications can not be taken out of the library. There are two catalogues and an on-line catalogue at users’ disposal.

Attendance of courses Foreign students can attend all our courses (undergraduate or master level). There is no need to sign up for the courses and attendance is not obligatory.
Language of the coursesAll our courses are in Italian for First Level Degree.Both Italian and foreign students can attend the courses taught in English. For further information , check the following site: http://mibe.unipv.it/
MASTER DEGREE LEVEL
Since the academic year 2009/2010, the graduate courses are organized in semesters. For the present year this orientation will regard only the first year courses, while the second year will continue the learning periods of three months. From the academic year 2010/2011 all courses will be held in semester basis.The courses are designed to offer to the students the possibility to achieve the specialization needed for the access to the always more exigent labour market. The new university reform is characterized by the simplification of the didactic orientation. Looking to adequate the structure and contents of the courses to the technological progress and the growing internationalisation of the markets.To the three graduate courses in Italian language from this year is added the new master course taught entirely in English language “International Business and EconomicsThe international opportunities successfully offered by the Faculty of Economics until now, besides the traditional LLP-Erasmus and Erasmus placement projects, are the ISEP (International Student Exchange Program), the EMBS (European Master of Business Sciences) program and the double- degree program, jointly operated with renowned European higher education institutions.The master courses are:

DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAMS
The Faculty of Economics has activated double degree programs with the University Robert Schuman Strasbourg (France), Lyon 3 (France), ESC Clermont Ferrand (France), the Eberahard Karls Universitat Tubingen, Hohenheim (Germany), the University of Alcalà (Spain) and the University of Seville (Spain); these bilateral agreements allow the students who participate to obtain - at the end of the period of study - an Italian degree and the equivalent foreign award.Since the 2004/2005 academic year, a double diploma course in "European Economics" with the University of Tubingen has been up and running and, since last year, with the University of Alcalà (Spain).
The duration of the double degree program is two years. The students of the Faculty can take a degree in Economia e Gestione delle Imprese or International Business and Economics - with the University of Strasbourg, the ESC Clermont Ferrand, the University of Tübingen, the University of Seville and the University of Alcalá. Furthermore, the students can take a double degree in Economia, Finanza ed Integrazione Internazionale or International Business and Economics with the University of Tübingen, the University of Seville and the University of Alcalá. The period abroad for students admitted to the program will be agreed between the partner institutions. The minimum length of stay abroad is two semesters. The number of students who can register is restricted and it varies according to the agreement between the Faculty and the partner institution.

STUDENTS MOBILITY PROGRAMS
ERASMUS
Within the European Union Erasmus program, the Faculty of Economics currently has active exchanges with forty-nine foreign universities (Belgium: 1. Denmark: 3. Finland: 1. France: 15. Germany: 8. United Kingdom: 3. Greece: 1. Poland: 2. Portugal: 2. Czech Republic: 1; Spain: 10. Romania: 1, Holland: 1).
As a consequence of university reforms, new criteria have been identified for students’ participation in the mobility programs and for the conferring of scholarships. These criteria were approved by the Faculty’s governing body on 15 December 2003.In order to stimulate the students’ mobility it has also been established that:
o the period of study abroad under the Erasmus program constitutes one of the external training activities, an alternative to an internship (6 ECTS);
o participation in an international student mobility program is one of pre-requisites that can be taken into consideration by the Commission of triennial degrees when attributing distinctions (with a minimum score of at least 103/110).
Number of students participating to the program (excluding double diploma students): after the dip recorded in the move to 3 + 2, in the last three academic years the mobility of the students at our faculty (outgoing) has begun to increase.Students enrolled on their specialist degree, who spend the second year abroad, can also participate in the program when preparing the thesis.The faculty receives a high number of foreign students (incoming), above all from Germany and Spain. The support services for these students have been much improved and each September an Incoming Day is organized, in order to allow them to familiarize with our facilities.

EMBS PROGRAM
The European Master of Business Sciences (EMBS) program is a carefully designed scheme of study leading to a qualification of Master's standard. An integral part of the program is a year abroad studies. The scheme is collectively administered by a consortium of European universities and business schools and aims to meet the requirements for the academic education of business and management graduates in modern Europe. Close cooperation between the institutions involved and a jointly agreed program structure provides a program of academic excellence, leading to full competence in another community language and in-depth understanding of the business environment and culture of other European countries.The EMBS scheme is aimed at high level students who have completed the initial part of a business and management degree scheme at one of the participating institutions. There is wide evidence that the specific skills, insights and experience which the EMBS program provides are much in demand in the European employment markets. Successful completion of the scheme also offers the possibility of studying for higher degree, including doctoral programs. The program was established in the 1980's, and the first EMBS certificates were awarded in 1992.The number of places available is strictly limited and there is strong competition for them.

Students spend the first year at their Home Institution where they will obtain 60 ECTS. They attend the second year abroad and they’ll get 60 ECTS divided into 3 modules. One of them must be European Affairs.A module in European Affairs and a project/thesis are compulsory. In addition, candidates select 5 subject modules from the following options available: Accountancy, Business Informatics, Economics, Finance, General and Strategic Management, Human Resource Management,Marketing, Production and Quantitative Methods. European Affairs and at least two of the other modules must be completed at a Host Institution in another language area. Modules are assessed on a grading scale agreed by all institutions.Successful candidates are awarded the consortium's EMBS Certificate. For outstanding candidates this may be awarded 'with merit' or, in exceptional cases, 'with distinction'. The Certificate is accompanied by an Academic Report which contains details of the modules taken and the scores obtained. In parallel the respective home institutions grant nationally recognised academic degrees to their students.
EMBS AT OUR FACULTY
Since 2002, the Faculty of Economics has participated in the Consortium EMBS (cfr. infra) as part of which exchange programs have been set up. These stays last an academic year (during a specialist degree) at one of the 21 European partner institutions.
Students who participate in this program (that we could define as a sort of "élite of Erasmus") acquire a second level degree (in Italy the specialist degree) and the title of “European Master in business science” conferred by the Consortium.

Study planThe studies are composed of two years. During the first year the students are in Pavia where they have to take 60 credits divided in three different modules. The second year will be spent abroad, during which the students have to take 60 ECTS worth of exams divided in three modules of 20 credits each. The module for European Affairs is obligatory. Each partner university has the module for European Affairs and at least five modules from the following list: Accountancy, Business Informatics, Economics, Finance, General and Strategic Management, Marketing, Quantitative Methods, Human Resource Management, Production, and eventually an optional module.The thesis written at the end of the program should preferably be on a theme related to Europe.
DegreeThe students who participate in this program will obtain a graduate degree (laurea di secondo livello) and also a degree in European Master in Business Science.The degree will be awarded during the annual meeting of the EMBS in November in one of the partner institutions.
ApplicationThe students who are registered for the first year of graduate studies (Laurea Specialistica, percorsi aziendali) can apply to the program.The application deadline coincides with the Socrates Program deadline. It is usually around February-March. The participants will be selected at the end of April.

European Consortium EMBS (European Master of Business Science), within which programs of exchange are set up at specialist degree level. This leads to the attainment of the "European Master of Business Science". TEACHING MOBILITY
Within the various programs set up, didactics and research contacts between our teaching staff and foreign universities have been consistently increasing. Within the Erasmus Program, the Faculty of Economics participates in a teaching mobility program with Poland (Prof Giancarlo Malvestito).Within the Hermes network, an exchange with visiting professors from the IECS of Strasbourg (Prof Antonella Zucchella) has been established.

Erasmus Mundus
Aimed at improving the quality of advanced education and at greater intercultural understanding by means of the cooperation with third party countries, Erasmus Mundus (www.erasmusmundus.it) is a program of collaboration and mobility that aims to promote globally the image of the European Union as center of excellence for learning.The Program supports high quality university European second level courses (corresponding, in the Italian system, to specialist degrees and first and second level university Masters). The purpose of the program is to strengthen the visibility and the attraction of the European advanced education in the third party countries. Erasmus Mundus includes scholarships financed by the European Union destined to citizens of third party countries that participate in course that achieve the " EM label ".
The establishment of a Master’s program in ‘European Union and international economy’ is in progress at the Faculty of Economics. The program forms part of the Erasmus Mundus, and involves the universities of Barcelona, Montpellier, Tubingen, Nottingham and Budapest.

EU - China Higher Education Cooperation Program
The Faculty of Economics is a partner in the EU-China European program. This aims to strengthen European studies in China.Within the program, a number of researchers and teaching staff from the People's Republic of China have been received in Pavia for periods of research in the faculty. These stays have lasted between six months and - a year.

Tuning (Tuning Educational Structure in Europe)
The Faculty of Economics has participated in the European Commission’s Tuning program since its conception. The objective here is to implement the Declaration of Bologna (June 1999) and to develop common European diploma models, based on the motto: "Tuning of educational structures and program on

the basis of diversity and autonomy". The first two parts of the program have been concluded, during the course of which the methodology to use in order to define a quality standard for the degree in business has been discussed; now the third phase of the process is about to get underway.
On 11 March 2005 the Faculty of Economics organized a meeting in order to outline the results of the first two phases, after which a report will be sent by mail and e-mail to the university Heads of Economics and to the chairmen of business degree courses at the Italian athenaeums.
The Faculty has contributed also to the translation of Tuning Guide, elaborating part of the Italian version of the final report of the first phase of the plan (Prof. Elena Montagna)2. COURSE PROGRAM:Aims of short-run business cycle analysis; definition and measures of economic fluctuations; data and indicators available for analyzing the short run behaviour of the economic system; techniques and methodologies for assessing and forecasting the short run dynamics of economic activity; discussion of case studies; analysis and use of standard structural and ad hoc business cycle models; examination of the most common short run business cycle reports and forecasts by international organizations (such as IMF, OECD and EU) and national research centres (such as Government, Bank of Italy, ISAE, Confindustria, Prometeia, Ref, Unicredit, Banca Intesa, etc.).
EDUCATIONAL AIMThe course purports to examine the various techniques and methodologies currently used by business cycle analysts in assessing and forecasting the short run dynamics of economic activity. After illustrating the type of information and indicators available for studying the short run behaviour of any economic system, there will be a classroom analysis and discussion of various case studies, through the examination of the most common business cycle reports and forecasts by international organizations and national research centres. The lectures will also host interventions of external business cycle experts who will show the students the techniques and results of their institutions’ short run analysis and forecasts. The final aim of

EDUCATIONAL AIMThis course deals with contracts made by business enterprises. At first, business-to consumer contracts law will be studied, as they are disciplined by the consumer code; then, attention will be concentrated on business-to-business contracts most frequently made in enterpreneurial activity, with a special regard to innominate contracts and contracts regulated by supplemental rules, contained in statutes different from the italian civil code. Finally, will be considered how italian law protects small business operators contracting with big companies (for instance, sub-supply contracts).

EDUCATIONAL AIMThe course aims at developing a gradual path with the purpose of training the participants to understand the functioning of the control systems, in order to recognise them, simulate and improve, in each field and, with specific regard to organisations and firms, for organisational purposes, management control, production and quality control.As the knowledge about the control systems is not only a technical fact, but a discipline. I stated as an objective the development of a Control Theory which highlights the very simple logic that lies beneath the notion of control process, as an ongoing approximation of a variable dynamics toward desired values (objectives, limits and ties), enabled by another (or more other) variable(s) – the control leverages – whose values are quantified, moment by moment, in order to reduce to zero the deviation from the objective.

COURSE PROGRAM Personnel Economics is the field that uses incentive devices and economic analyses to think about human resources issues. It does not take the traditional sociological, industrial or psychological human resources approach. Rather, personnel economics proceeds from the assumption that human resources concerns are inherently economic issues which economists can address from a position of comparative advantage. The course provides students with a framework from which to judge the impact and appropriateness of various employment practices. We focus on the building blocks that form the foundation of personnel economics: first, economists assume that individuals engage in maximizing, rational behavior; second, economics adheres strictly to the importance of equilibrium as part of any theory; third, economists place a heavy emphasis on a clearly defined concept of efficiency. The subjects to be discussed include hiring standards, productivity and performance measurement, compensation schemes, incentives and employee evaluation programs, diversity management. Economic theory will be used to develop insight and to produce appropriate policy prescriptions. Some background in microeconomics will be expected.

EDUCATIONAL AIMThis course provides an economic analytical view of fundamental personnel issues. Topics covered include education and training, job design and hierarchy, recruitment decisions, compensation systems, evaluation and promotion strategies, turnover of workers, performance pay, tournaments. The main aim of the course will be the discussion of economic methods that can explain personnel decisions and organizational structures of firms.At the end of the course students should be familiar with the terminology and basic issues related to the internal labor market; able to understand alternative theories which aim at explaining stylized facts of human resources concerns; in a position to evaluate the results of empirical work and to assess the economic implications of various employment practices; able to relate theory to practice handling abstract themes and quantitative evidence; able to work independently in order to research and select relevant information and extend this information to problem-solving within the context of personnel economics issues.

EDUCATIONAL AIMThe course has a twofold objective. On the one hand it aims at giving students the basic tools necessary to understand the interdependence existing between the energy and economic system as a whole, integrating economic with technical and institutional details, with particular reference to demand, energy production costs, the actual working of the international market for primary goods and finally the regulation and liberalization trends of the internal market for energy sources (electricity and gas). On the other hand the course aims at deepening students’ knowledge of the practical and operating aspects of some theoretical concepts concerning the economic working of the energy system.

EDUCATIONAL AIMCourse objective is to highlight the importance of gender in the economic environment and to show the usefulness of a gender approach to the analysis of economic problems. The gender approach is applied both to the analysis of the labor market that the

management of human resources. The topics covered include participation in the labor market, the family as the unit of production, the optimal allocation of time, commitment and talent between housework and childcare and labor market, wage gaps, the investment in human capital, statistical discrimination, segregation, horizontal and vertical, the theory of tournaments, gender policies. The teaching method includes self-training, active participation and presentations in the classroom. After completing this course, students will be able to capture the main phenomena related to the economy of gender by comparing the Italian situation with that of other countries will be able to describe the results of empirical research and assess the economic implications of policies on equal opportunities will be able to integrate their knowledge independently collect and process information in different contexts and by extending the application of lessons learned. They will know also prepare a research report on the analysis of a specific case, supplemented by an interview with a top-manager of public or private sector, proving to have developed learning skills and autonomy of research to be able to make personal assessments and propose reasoned conclusions and relevant. EDUCATIONAL AIMThe course is divided into three parts, the student will be expected to follow the portion of the overall framework and can freely choose as an additional module in the second or third part of the course. The first part discusses the role of general importance in the process of development and modernization of the economic system and the evolution of public-private relationship, with specific reference to the European system. The course discusses strategies in public-private high-tech sectors, high research and innovation, innovative projects with greater economic impact, some cases of innovative enterprises. The second part of the course analyzes the non-profit sector in the European economy. They supplement the welfare reform, legal aspects, economic and organizational non-profit organizations, the trends in place.The third part of the course examines a specific area of the European economy, which is located both in public and private non-profit organization formed by the WHO. Specific attention is devoted to the pharmaceutical sector in public-private strategies in support of research and innovation.

COURSE PROGRAM This course addresses advanced organizational design issues at both micro and macro level. Topics such as flexibility, business unit articulations, de-layering, empowerment, team-working, as well as adhocratic, horizontal, matrix, and global forms, and issues such as outsourcing and off-shoring, organization service providing, modularity, networking are included. Moreover, an integrated framework is used to develop knowledge and skills for designing and managing continuous organizational change and innovation. The main focus of the course will be the analysis of the growth and survival of industries and firms, an issue that is crucial to the growth of economies as a whole . To understand how industries develop and change, we need to understand how new or improved production methods and products are introduced. This course examines industrial change, beginning from the inception of an industry. Special attention is paid to the role of technology as an important driver of industrial competition. We will examine the entry, exit, and growth of firms in individual industrial markets, such as automobiles, tires, semiconductors, lasers, networking products, and computers. We will study how oligopolies form as a result of product variety, economies of scale, scope, advertising and distribution. In so doing, we will also speculate about possible national policies and strategies for corporate success. Topics will include:

EDUCATIONAL AIM:The course aims to introduce students to theories and tools for managing successful entrepreneurial ventures. These theories and tools will help the student to operate in global environments , to respond to the opportunities and challenges in foreign markets, and to adopt socially responsive behaviour. Discussions on theoretical frameworks will aim to build basic knowledge and a capacity to develop critical thinking. The presentation of tools and managerial models aims to develop specific competences in running international ventures. The final project work on an international business plan aims to help students develop a comprehensive view of the firm and identify critical issues and sustainable development paths.
COURSE PROGRAM: The course covers the emerging field of study of international entrepreneurship, focusing on how firms venture into foreign markets, how they explore and exploit foreign market opportunities, from the perspective of international new ventures, of fast growing small firms and MNEs entrepreneurial subsidiaries. The internationally oriented entrepreneurial behaviour of non-profit organisations and NGOs will also be considered. Seizing and exploiting opportunities on a global scale, market/customer orientation, and an appropriate marketing mix are the key success factors of entrepreneurial ventures. For this reason, the second part of the course will be devoted to international marketing approaches and tools, and will cover the issue of social responsiveness of marketing practices in foreign markets too.

Students attending the lectures will be evaluated on the basis of group assignment, based on the book and other reading materials available in the web page of the course. Students who cannot attend the lectures will be subject to a written and oral examination. The written test is based on the book A.Zucchella, P. Scabini, Internation entrepreneurship, Palgrave, London, 2007 and on other readings as listed in the course web page. The oral test will consist in a 15 minutes power point presentation, illustrating a case study. The case study should be presented both in power point and in a word file (to be delivered one week before the exam) describing the company history and profile, activities and markets, resources and capabilities, organisation, networks, foreign operations. Last but not least, the case study involves an application of the model presented in chapter 5 and 6 of the above mentioned book.

COURSE PROGRAM The course is divided in two parts. In the first one, once the main functions of the public sector are defined, according to the traditional Musgravian distinction, the causes of market failure are analyzed: in particular, the existence of public goods, externalities, monopoly and natural monopoly, asymmetric information. Then, the tax theory is considered in depth, including the main types of taxes, the ensuing economic effects and the distorsions created by the tax system. Finally, some insights are provided in the theory of fiscal federalism and the sustainability of public debt.
In the second part of the course three different topics are addressed. First, the structure of welfare expenditures, including health, pensions and education. Second, the evolution of fiscal federal reform in Italy is analyzed and, finally, the European constraints on the management of fiscal policy within the Monetary Union

EDUCATIONAL AIMThe course proposes the discussion of the problems related to the definition and measurement of the inequity and poverty and their implications on the human and economic development policies. The course is divided and two parts, one focuses on the analysis of the inequity and the other focuses on aspects of the poverty, related between them and with laboratory activities and groupwork on empirical application and statistical data.The first part of the course presents principal normative and positive theories of inequity, the relation with poverty; main tools of measurement. The second part faces aspect related to concepts and measurements of poverty.Will be analysed cases from industrialized countries and developing countries.

EDUCATIONAL AIMThe aim of the course is the analysis of the main features of the business combinations and other extraordinary events in corporate life, in a view of giving professional advice and assistance by an independent adviser or an internal financial officer. This kind of advice needs the knowledge of the relevant rules of business and taxation legislations also in order to agree a correct consideration between the contracting parties. The aim of the course is also to develop student’s ability to analyse and interpret financial statements for the purpose of assessing financial performance of firms, by applying appropriate financial tools.
