Claimants have been told that they will own25 percent of the shares of their partnereddevelopment company and will also receiveR40 million in payment for leasing theirland. The RPRCC has also pledged R6500 to-wards each family of informal residents.

Yet, by this weekend only a handful of fa-milies had received their money.

According to an active dissenter and sup-porter of the informal residents who are for-ced to move, Toni Tresadern, the only peoplewho have received the money (by Monday),were those who had bank accounts.

“There are so many things wrong withthis move,” says a visibly upset Tresadern, who is particularly concerned about thechildren.

She has been heavily involved in the com-munity for 11 years and has opposed the mo-ve ever since she heard about it.

She says that individual families who hadpreviously been living on a large plot of landare now forced to move into a space as bigas a soccer field with other families.

“Different cultures will be squeezed toge-ther into little shacks,” she says, adding thatthere will undoubtedly be clashes betweenWolwerivier residents.

“I’m just trying to keep the people aliveand kicking, but they are so disturbed now, because they don’t know what’s going on,even I have become an enemy. Everybody isto blame now. I took two old ladies to gettheir IDs so that they can get their SASSA

payments, and some of the others are shou-ting and screaming at me! Who can blamethem? The City hands them a piece of papersaying they have to move or they will comewith bulldozers!”

According to her the people who used theland prior to the Wolwerivier relocationwarned the City that it was prone to flood-ing, but this warning fell on deaf ears. Thiswas confirmed when she visited the settle-ment over the weekend.

Tresadern is fearful that an unparralelledwave of crime will hit the surrounding com-munities of Melkbosstrand, Morning Starand nearby farms. At the time of going topress, the City of Cape Town has failed to res-pond to any queries.

People joked this weekend that winter is now just plain showing off. “OK,” they quipped, “You’ve made your point. Now go away please.” Theaftermath of the cold front is still with us, but the temperatures have been slowly getting a little more bearable over the last few days. Some of the homeless people inMontague Gardens have beenlabelled as guilty by associati-

on, despite performing a vital rolein the area.

Last week a homeless couple saythey “performed their unofficialneighbourhood watch duties” andprevented suspected criminals fromstealing around R6500 of diesel fromJEF Engineering, a Montague Gar-dens company.

The homeless couple prefer to re-main anonymous because some oftheir family members don’t knowthey are living on the streets. Livingoutside one of the many warehousesalong Stella and Esso Road, they arewell-known among the local busi-ness folk because of their role as thestreet’s unofficial neighbourhoodwatch.

VagrancyThis snippet of good news follows

on two TygerBurger articles overthe last month where residents havevoiced their concern about the in-crease of vagrancy in the area.

One reader was particularly per-turbed at the perception being crea-ted that vagrancy is linked to crime.

Said Kyle Mason-Jones in a letterto the newspaper: “In recent yearsI have become very worried by whatI see as a growing hostility towardsthe poor. A particularly troublingpart is that many people in govern-ment, businessand the generalpublic seem to beequating povertywith criminality.”

Mason-Jones’perception is sup-ported by the la-test incident.

Prompt responseEarly last Mon-

day morning, thehomeless couple heard a commoti-on at the JEF Engineering premi-ses, located at the back of the BP re-fineries. Elaine Scott, a spokesper-son of the engineering company, says:

“The homeless man walks up anddown the streets at night. They tookit upon themselves to protect the bu-sinesses, as there have been peopledumping all sorts of stuff onto ourpremises.”

Scott says the man was doing hisrounds at about 02:00 that morningwhen he heard a noise in JEF’syard.

“Two men had broken open our

diesel tank and had siphoned dieselinto 25L drums, all ready to go. Theman noticed there was somethingwrong and saw movement at thepremises and went to check,” shesaid.

The homelessman, who owns acellphone, quick-ly called the poli-ce, who arrivedthe scene, but themen had alreadymade a run for it.

A complex picture“Unfortunately

the two guys gotaway, but they

had to drop the diesel.“The man and his family then

kept an eye on the diesel until we ca-me out,” she said.

“We would like to give them someessentials to say thank you.”

Jannie Majied, the manager of theTygerberg Association for StreetPeople, says he finds it disconcer-ting when people automatically linkvagrancy with crime.

He nonetheless adds that crimi-nals often hide among vagrants.

Says Majied:“Criminals have a place to stay,

but they sell drugs and rob peoplewhile posing as homeless people.”

FATHER’S DAY 2014

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

SixMelkbosstrandNational SeaRescueInstitute (NSRI) members braved mis-ty weather and rough seas last Wed-

nesday night to save two fishermen off theElands Bay coastline.

The extraordinarily dedicated NSRI vo-lunteers finally managed to bring the fis-hermen home at 06:00 Thursday morning, just in time to take a quick shower and getto work.

NSRI Melkbos’ station commander, Rhi-ne Barnes, was joined by crew membersBruce Sandmann, Louis Roux, Hein Kohneand first-timers Mardi Valke and DaleneErasmus when they left for Elands Bay.

Accompanying them was Marnette Mey-er, who took a couple of photographs of therescue.

On a missionSays Barnes: “We first got a call from

NSRI Mykonos at 18:00 on Wednesdaynight, asking us to help rescue the fisher-men, because their boat was out of serviceand it would take them (Mykonos) sevenhours to get to the scene. I asked our crewto get ready and prepare for a long, coldnight. Thirty minutes later we got the callfor our assistance.”

The volunteers drove to Elands Bay withtheir rescue boat Spirit of Vines and arrivedthere at 21:00.

The fishermen, aged 73 and 45-years-old,first alerted rescue services of their predica-ment by cellphone.

Their 25 horse powered motor lost died onthem somewhere near Elands Bay. The onlyinfo they had was that the water was about20 meters deep and they could barely spotan orange light on the coast. The mist weregetting heavier and the waves increasinglychoppy.

The NSRI and the local police had lost ra-

dio contact with the fishermen, so rescueservices had to try and figure out where thefishermen were most likely to be.

Homeward boundBy 23:00 they formulated a strategy and

launched their boat to start the search.According to Barnes the freezing cold fis-

hermen were finally spotted about a mileoff the coast, when one of the NSRI sear-chlights reflected off one of the fishermen’s

jackets. After the rescue the Spirit of Vines had to

go all the way to Lambert’s Bay for recove-ry. At 03:00 she reached Lambert’s Bay andthen three hours later they finally got backto Melkbosstrand.

Concludes Barnes: “It was the first opera-tional call for Mardi and Dalene and theydid exceptionally well!”

The two thank everyone who had a handin the rescue.

Most people would agree that seventeen-year olds are supposed to watch television,go to parties and generally excel at makinglife hard for their parents.Alexia Nortier from Sunningdale didn’t

the street and they were all living togetherin a 3x6m wendy house,” she recalls.“We did what we could, but it was clear

that the woman needed extra housing, soI made a little poster with a collection tinand started raising funds.“It took a long time and plenty of diffe-

others, earned her the award.“My mom sent LeadSA a letter and told

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

Contrary to popular belief, pugs are actuallydogs.Something pugs cannot quite manage,

they try, but that tongue refuses to stay insi-de that cheek! These oddities are exactly what distin-

guishes pugs from mere dogs.About 20 pugs proudlywaddled downOtto

du Plessis Drive on Sunday in the name ofPug Rescue SA.Humans and other dogs stopped and sta-

red at the googly-eyed creatures as they huf-fed and puffed their way down the street.Let’s face it – pugs are adorable!

This is the sentiment of Pug Rescue SA’sLilian Looney.“I love them because they are so lovable!

They stick to you like glue! They’re non-agressive and very good with children.”She adds matter-of-factly that pugs are

“not actually fighting breeds at all”.Looney fosters four pugs herself and can-

not get enough of them. The Pug-a-Thon, a 2km walk for members

of Pug Rescue SA and their dogs, started infront of Doodles restaurant under heavyclouds. While some sought shelter from the rain

the adverse weather conditions actually sui-ted them, as these dogs prefer cooler tempe-ratures while walking.Looney continues: “99.9% of these pugs

were adopted throughPugRescueSA,whichthen finds homes for them. We get them inand immediately sterilise them and micro-chip them, foster them out and find homesfor them.“Fortunately there are a lot of pug lovers

around who will then go and do a homecheck and see if the home is suitable. Thepug must be inside, you have to understandthe breed. They cannot have unsupervisedaccess to a pool, other than that just lots oflove. Pugs are a very loving breed, but theydo shed hair 365 days of the year, they’re “te-flon dogs”, because they want to be with hu-mans all the time.”Pugs live up to 17 years and are, according

to Looney, one of the best breeds around.“Anybody who wants to adopt a pug can

go to our website, www.pugrescue.co.za, formore information. Also, people who want toget rid of their pug can fill in a surrenderform and we will take a pug of any age orhealth issues and rescue them,” concludesLooney.

A HELPING HAND: An anonymous taxi driver from Bellville took the time to help an elderly gentlemen on theroute from Eerste River to Bellville. An entire front row seat, which normally seats four people, was devoted tohim. The driver also took the time – during peak hour traffic – to personally help the man disembark at theBellville Mall, setting up his wheelchair and seeing him safely across the road. Please be vigilant and awarenot to part with your hard-earned cash. I do not refer torobbers who physically robpeople, but rather loan sharksand unscrupulous moneylenders.

I am a victim of one in theElsies River area. I made aloan of R500 which had to bepaid back by my next salarydate. The amount I had to payback was R750. But I didn’t paythe full amount back, so I wasin arrears. Despite making acouple of R100 payments attheir offices, they still handedme over to a lawyer.

I now have to pay R2951 tothe lawyer.

Please do not fall into thetrap of money lenders; theirinterest kills you and won’teasily recover.

I realise it may be a quicksolution in your hour of need, but the consequences areenormous.

Quick cash loans are a formof bondage to hold you in agrip of debt – a grip of whichyou won’t be untied easily.

I refer to “Petition battle forspeed bumps” (TygerBurger, 2July).

I agree there are too manypreventable road deaths on ourroads. So being safety con-scious, I purchased a car withmany safety features such aspre-crash radar and run-flattyres.

Run-flat tyres have solid sidewalls, so the car maintainscontrol even during a tyreburst at 120km/h. It is, howev-er, not compatible with speedhumps.

Every speed bump is builtdifferently. Many motorists

Speed bumps notthe answer

with vehicles with run-flat tyreshave to stop at each speedhump to the dismay of othersand often at the risk of arear-end collision, because even10km/h is too fast for somespeed humps.

People with larger vehiclesand taxis with worn shockshardly notice those speedhumps.

Do we promote safety if wefrustrate and punish mostlaw-abiding road users to slowdown a few unsafe drives?

A speed bump is only effec-tive on a small stretch of road.Effective policing, on the otherhand, would punish the unsafedrivers.

Maybe the root of the prob-lem is ineffective policingwhich a few speed hump isunlikely to solve. Why do wehave to pay tax for ineffectivepolicing and then pay for aspeed humps to cover up? Iwould rather support a petitionfor effective policing.

GERHARDBlouberg Sands

I am so sorry to hear aboutyour sore feet and hands, butyou still have feet, and obvious-ly they still work or you wouldbe in a wheelchair (“Moeniehier links en regs beskuldignie”, TygerBurger, 2 July).

I want to suggest that on thedays you are in pain, it mighthelp you to find a relative orfriend to go to the shops foryou. I am tired of so-calleddisabled people who can barelyget out of their cars and hobbleinto the centre with greatdifficulty, but walk normallyjust 10 minutes later thanks tothe ‘fantastic therapy’ thecentre offers.

So yes, you may have adisability but if we had to gothrough the process of obtain-ing a legal wheelchair disc at ahuge cost – money that we can

ill afford – then I feel it onlyappropriate that you too needto follow the correct steps inobtaining that disc.

If your doctor feels youqualify for a disc, it needs to berenewed every two years. Itwould make it so much easierfor you, as you won’t have todeal with all the annoyingpeople accusing you of parkingillegally.

Lightning at Killarney

Mark van den Burg from Table View currently 4th in the superbike championsip with 92 pointsonly 10 points behind leader Ronald Slamet.

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

Ernie “Lightning” Leite and Superbikestar Ronald Slamet are two northernsuburbs competitors expected to shoot

the lights out during the fifth round of theWingfield Motors Power Series at Killarneyon Saturday.Anyone who braved the cold during the

most recent meeting will agree that the re-freshing manner in which the tournamentshows the talent of certain drivers who– forvarious reasons are often mechanicallychallenged and outclassed on a dry surface–was a hugely positive feature. While Slamet has retained his overall lead

in the Superbike championship, Leite wasprobably evenmore impressive in theMidasClubman category. At the wheel of his classC, VW Caddy bakkie, a model designed asa light commercial workhorse, his oppositi-on included the latest in total engineeringfrom BMW and Audi among others and hewas down in 22nd place on the starting gridafter the final practice session. But when the heavens opened up at the

start, he used his headmore than his accele-rator as he picked his way carefully throughthe field. With cars going off the track in alldirections, it was a magnificent performan-ce. So much so that he briefly led the entire

field until having to settle in second placewhenhewas passedDanie vanNiekerk’s 325BMW, shortly before the finish. While the Midas category has a bye this

week, the hyper-enthusiastic Leite will beseen in his low life class D, Fiat 128 Rallyein the Mutlu Battery Classic Car events.Could there be a repeat performance if itrains?Whether wet or dry, he is going to face up

to Vance Kearney’s Capri Perana V8, AntonRollino (Chev CanAm V8), Chris Carolin(Mazda rotary) and Martin Richards in hissuper-quick Datsun KB210. It won’t be easy. The brutal power of the big Masters V8’s,

is not conducive to racing in skating rinkconditions and with only four of the one-make category able to take the chequeredflag last month, the drivers are all going tobe on the hunt for points in the cominground.Much is expected from 18-year-old Marco

Busi in the Makita Supercar category. Theformer GTi star will be making his debut inthe one-make class. Thenwith two sleek Bri-tish Juno sports cars including champion-ship leader Francis Carruthers in his newSS7 lined up against an array of the best Ger-manPorsches in theBigFootExpress Sportsand GT events, it’s difficult to predict thewinner of this one.

Other events on Saturday include racesfor the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Cars andFormula Libre single seaters. Among the

two wheelers, theMike Hopkins Superbikesand the Powersport, Clubman and Classicmotorcycles will all be seen in action.

Flying offthe wall

Milnerton SquashClub keeps onproducing topprovincial players. From the back, from left are: GaryWheadon andJustin Maritz.Middle: DarioHendrickse andAidan Ward. Front:Jordan Campbell.

Milnerton Squash Club enjoyed a verysuccessful streak last month.

The club hosted its first publictournament, which 11 teams entered.

Matches were played within a 20 minutetime limit and the playerwith themost num-ber of points at the end, was declared thewinner.

The club is very proud of its juniors whoareparticipating in the interprovincial tour-nament this month. Aidan Ward was selec-ted to represent theWP u-13C team, who areplaying in Port Elizabeth. This was the firstyear he has been selected. He also finished17th in his first u-13 WP Open earlier thisyear as well.

Accolades all roundJordyn Campbell is having an equally im-

pressive year thus far, building on last ye-ar’s success. In 2013 in the u-11 category, shewon theWPOpen, Boland Open, Paarl Openand Strand Open. Moving up to the next agegroup is always a tough task, but she has ex-celled again, finishing 7th in the u-13 Bloem-fontein Open and 2nd in the u-13 WP Open. After theWP ranking events, Jordynwas se-lected as theno.1 for theu-13WP teamtoplayin Port Elizabeth.

Fellow team member Dario Hendrickse

has been selected for the WP u-14B team totravel to Johannesburg for the interprovin-cial.Hewill be playingnumber 3 in the team.He also moved up to a higher age group thisyear, and achieved a 9th in the u-14 Bolandand WP Open.

JustinMaritz has been selected as the no.3in the WP u-16 team, off to compete in EastLondon. This is the fourth year he has beenselected to represent WP. He has been selec-ted as the captain ofMilnerton High Schools1st team, even though he is only in grade 10.

A clear winnerAnotherMilnerton player achieving some

great results is Gary Wheadon. He achieveda career best of no.3 on the SA rankings thatwere released in June.

This comes off some good tournament re-sults so far this year, where he won the Rho-des Open, Berea Rovers Open, NMMUOpen,KZN Closed, and good results in the LlondtPark Open and the WP Open, which was aPSA Tour event.

The club would also like to invite mem-bers and non-members, to the club’s opensession, held every Saturday from 12:30 to16:00. It is open to all players of all levels. eve-ryone is welcome to join in the bring-and-braai afterwards.

The u-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week ended inDurban on Friday with a 29-14 win for Wes-tern Province- the unofficial ‘final’ of theweek.

The win meant that WP were the onlyteam to come through the week unbeaten, leaving no doubt that theywere the best sideover the four days of play.

The final featured a contrast of playingstyles. Province had the stronger forwardsand three of their five tries came fromdriving mauls, while Border had the mostexciting backline at the week.

They managed to score two tries but theirspeedsters never saw enough of the ball andWPwere good value for their win in the end.Daniel Venter scored two of the pushovertries for Province, with the others comingfromBenjaminVan Schalkwyk andMeiringEbersohn (two).

Fabrizio Linnert kicked two conversionsand the Border tries were scored by AustinBrandt and Sibusiso Javu. Rayden Mastersconverted both tries.

The traditional Craven Week ‘test’ matchbetween Zimbabwe and Namibia ended in adraw, as did the Griffons vs Border Countryclash; the Cheetahs scored a last minute tryto beat KwaZulu-Natal 20-17, and EP held onto edge the Leopards 14-13 in the curtain-rai-ser to the main game.

It was two tries each for EP and the Leo-pards -AyabulelaBulemboandMichaelPad-dock for EP and Gideon Van Wyk and Ros-souw Karsten for the Leopards, with a con-versionmaking all the difference in the end.

In other final day action, the Golden Lionsmade it three out four by beating the Pumas25-20, and the Blue Bulls got their first andonly win of the week - 14-7 over Griquas.
