Haar bure en vriende sê sy is die vrouwat nooit huiwer om ’n helpende handna ander uit te hou nie. En juis daar-

om is sy gekies as een van die moeders vandie gemeenskap deur TygerBurger en RadioTygerberg.

“Helen het gesê dis Radio Tygerberg toedie foon lui. Ek het toe nie geweet wat aan-gaan nie,” sê Sarie Ralph, ’n merkwaardigevrou uit die Kuilsrivier-gemeenskap.

Met soveel sjarme en met ’n baie beskeiepersoonlikheid, glo Sarie dat sy glad nie ver-dien het om genomineer te word nie.

Helen Geldenhuys, wat Sarie genomineerhet, beskryf haar as ’n vrou wat nooit terug-staan as sy hoor iemand het hulp nodig nie.

StruikelblokkeSarie vertel van baie struikelblokke wat

sy ervaar het in haar lewe – van geldelikeprobleme tot terugslae toe sy haar seun ver-loor het en haar dogter in ’n motorongelukwas. Sy sê sy het besef God sal haar deur al-les dra en sy kan net teruggee deur uit tehelp. Sy beskryf hoe sy ’n klein seuntjielangs die pad sien slaap het en onmiddellikgestop het om vir hom kos te gee. Sy moedigook altyd haar bure aan om hul ou kleding-

stukke vir die minderbevoorregtes te skenk.“My huis was al op ’n tyd vol sakke klere vanmense wat dit aan die armes gee.”

Sarie se dogter, Debbie, was jare gelede in’n ongeluk, wat breinskade veroorsaak het.Sy sê die dood van haar seun en haar dogterse ongeluk het haar swaar getref, maar syhet moed bymekaar geskraap en geglo datals met ’n doel gebeur.

Abigail Franse, een van die verpleegsterswat na Debbie omsien, sê Sarie is waarlik’n liefdevolle mens en luister altyd as jy ’nprobleem het. Helen vertel dat Sarie baiekeer die skouer was waarop sy kon huil. “Syis waarlik vir my ’n moeder, omdat ek nie

nou een het nie,” sê Helen.

NominasiesUit meer as ’n duisend SMS-nominasies,

het Helen Sarie genomineer om die titel mettrots te dra.

Sarie sê die glimlag op mense se gesigteas hulle ’n ordentlike bord kos kry, betekenals vir haar.

Sy het ’n besluit gemaak om geen Kersge-skenke vir familielede meer te gee nie, maarskenk eerder sop, brood en klere met Kers-fees. “Ek wil graag eendag my eie sopkom-buis hê. Ek glo daardie vroue doen regtigbaie,” sê sy.

Human negligence result-ed in deadly fires over theweekend leaving threepeople dead and 50 othersdestitute.

Of the affected areas areFaure,where onSunday 16June, at 06:44 a fire oc-curred at 63 Ithemba Labsinformal settlement, offOld Faure Road in ElectricCity in the Faure farm-lands area.

In amedia release by theCity of Cape Town’s Disas-ter Risk Management, itwas said that four emer-gency vehicles were des-patched to the scene fromthe Mfuleni, LansdowneRoad (Khayelitsha),Strand and Belhar fire sta-tions.

The fire completely de-stroyed one informalstructure and claimed thelives of one adult male andone adult female.

Their identities havenot been confirmed andthe cause of the fire re-mains unclear.

Authorities have how-ever, opened an inquestdocket to investigate theincident.

In a separate incident inEerste River, at 11:28 on

Sunday, 16 June a fire oc-curred at 128 Stratford Av-enue, in Stratford.

Four emergency vehi-cles were despatched fromthe Mfuleni and Kuils Riv-er fire stations, where fire-fighters were exposed to abuilding with tremendoussmoke visible from a dis-tance.

Occupants of the houseattempted to extinguishthe firewithagardenhose.

However the flameswere too intense.

Upon arrival of emer-gency crews itwas later es-tablished that the formaldwelling had in fact beenset alight.

The fire was brought un-der control, but the build-ing however was declaredstructurally unsafe by thecity’s building inspector-ate due to the fire damagesit sustained.

It is suspected that thefire was caused by an elec-tricity fault.

Allegedly sparks surg-ing from a short circuit inthe electricalwiring, ignit-ing the insulation.

As a result of the blaze 16persons were left home-less.

Deadly fires rageleaving threepeople dead

The Eerste River Athleticclub will be having a 15 kmroad race, 10 km walk and5 km fun run on Saturday,June 22 at Stratford PrimarySchool in Eerste River.

Haar sopkombuis, wat maar vyf maandeoud is, sorg dat daar weekliks ’n bord kosis vir meer as 100 kinders en volwassenesin die Eersterivier-gemeenskap.

Hester Kampher, wat vir 26 jaar as ’n ver-pleegster in die pediatriese afdeling by dieTygerberg-hospitaal gewerk het, het ’n lief-de vir kinders ontwikkel.

Nadat minderbevoorregtes daagliks aanhaar voordeur kom klop het vir iets om teeet, het die idee ontstaan om iets aan diésaak te doen.

Van jonk tot oud kom minderbevoorreg-tes elke Woensdag en Vrydag om 13:30 nahaar vir ’n koppie sop en ’n bord kos.

Vir die meerderheid van die ouers watwerkloos is, is dit die enigste kos vir die dag.

“Hierwys ons niemandweg nie – ons deu-re staan altyd oop,” sê Hester.

Hester vertel dat haar grootste struikel-blok uit die feit spruit dat die koste van diesopkombuis uit haar en haar helpers se sak-ke kom.

Haar daaglikse roetine sluit in om eershaar familie te versorg en dan begin sy van-af 06:00 voor die potte staan.

“Die sopkombuis raak elke dag gewilder.Daar kom altyd nuwe gesiggies by,” sê sy.

Die sopkombuis is meer as ’n plek waardaar net brood op die tafel is, maar het in’n regte tuiste ontwikkel met “’n eie kleinfamilie”.

Hester vertel dat sy almal by die naamnoem wat die sopkombuis besoek. “Somsstap hier gesinne in. Dis regtig hartseer,” sêsy.

Hester se twee helpers, Sarah Adams enLucia Lekeur, deel haar passie vir die taakas gemeenskapsmoeder.

“Voordat haar besoekers kos kry, staanhulle opgewonde in ’n tou. Dit is ’n riem on-der die hart om te sien hoe ’nman saammet

sy vrou hand aan hand staan en wag op hulbeurt,” se Sarah.

Die span probeer ook om hulle geestelikop te voed.

“Ons gee baie om vir die gemeenskap enons glo dat wat jy doen, gee die Here dubbelaan jou terug,” se Lucia.

Hester word ten volle deur haar gesin on-dersteun, en is aangewys as ’n finalis in dieTygerburger en Radio Tygerberg se moe-ders van die gemeenskapsprojek.

“Dit laat ons ongelooflik goed voel om tesien daar is mense wat raaksien wat ons

doen,” se HesterSyvertel van twee seuntjieswat voorhaar

deur opgedaag het vir kos, nadat hulle niksgehad het om voor skooltyd te eet nie.

“Sy het die oorskietkos aan hulle bedien.Kort voor lank was daar nuwe gesiggies bydie deur.

“Dit is so hartseer om te sien,” sê Hester.Sy help ook gereeld kinders om te lees en

Strict training pays off

Gambate in Japanese translates to per-severance – something that HenryBosman and Neill Bruce learned all

too well in their three-month tenure in To-kyo.

Now, back home in their beloved coun-try, the Bellville boys are reflecting on aonce-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Let me tell you, it was tough. We wereunder no illusion that it would be a walkin the park, but boy were we in for a sur-prise.

“We were based at the Honbu dojo whichis the international headquarters for Ky-okushin-kan karate. Our day would startwith the cleaning of the dojo and after thatwe would have intensive training.

Neill reflects on the many intensive ses-sions they had. “You don’t ever fear thatyou are in pain. On Tuesdays we had fight-ing classes with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kg champions.”

“Those guys are at another level of tough,sometimes I would take kicks to the leg sothat I can barely stand on it, but somehowyou pull through and only check on yourinjuries after the fight.”

“Looking back on it, it made me and Hen-ry so much more tough, not only mentally,but physically as well. We were also in-structed to give some classes to six to 13-year-olds. That was fun and it helped uswith our own technique.

“As you stand in front of the class teach-ing them the various techniques, you haveto constantly check them and yourself to

make sure you are doing things correctly.”

BetterSince their return, their balance, under-

standing of this ancient practice and stami-na have improved dramatically.

They have also revised their trainingschedule to keep the intensity high.

“These boys really surprised me. Justlooking at them made me realise that these

are not the same boys that I sent to Japanthree months ago.”

“They are physically, mentally and tech-nically better. I’m excited to see them per-form in upcoming tournaments,” said Shi-hanHennieBosmanof theWelgemoeddojo.

Come August, when they will be compet-ing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tourna-ment in Durban, they are sure to be moreprepared for the challenge.

Engen Santos FC will face two season-de-fining moments this week when theytake on Mpumalanga Black Aces and

Chippa United in the Premier Soccer League(PSL) promotion/relegation play-offs.

The People’s Team did well to fight theirway back into contention for promotion af-ter a disastrous start in the National FirstDivision (NFD).

But their hard work could all be in vainif they fail to beat Aces and Chippa in thetwohomegames onThursday 20 andSunday23 June.

Head coach Ian Palmer admits bothmatches will be crucial, but says a loss willnot be the death of his side’s promotionhopes.

Setback“I don’t think this game is do or die, be-

cause we still have to play Chippa soon afterthat. If we lose it won’t be good and it willbe a huge setback,” he says.

“But we are thinking about that. We aregoing full-out to get one over Aces and putus in thedriving seat.Aces are in thedrivingseat, because they are the only team with awin. The playing field will be levelled as wewill be at home.”

Santos had an undesirable start to theplay-offs last month when their first match,away to Chippa, finished in a goal-less draw.

Chippa went on to lose 1-0 to Aces in thesecond play-off match.

The Mpumalanga side now top the stand-ings aheadof their clash against Santos,whohave not had much success against Aces thisseason.

But Palmer will hope recent form and pastresults are not an indicator of what Thurs-day’s result will be.

The People’s Team drew 0-0 against Acesin their last encounter in Mpumalanga inApril, while Aces beat Santos 1-0 at AthloneStadium in the season opener last October.

Palmer says the fixtures have not beenkind to his side, but he is confident histroops will recover before their Cape derbyagainst Philippi’s Chippa.

“Chippa also play us and then have to goto Aces three days later. It’s about howquickly you recover. We have the Sports Sci-ence Institute of South Africa on our side tohelp us regenerate for the next game.”

Santos’ fixture against Aces will kick-offat Cape Town Stadium at 19:30 on Thursday20 June. Chippa United will host Aces onWednesday 26 June and the final fixture ofthe play-offs will see Santos travel to Mpu-malanga to face Aces on Saturday 29 June.

The Tri-Rock offers athletes a unique ex-perience on one of the world’s most famousheritage sites.
