He explains the Big Bay pump station had to be switched off, with the pump station ser- viced with vacuum tankers until the rising main could be repaired. “Spills occurred for short periods during the peaks on Friday and Saturday morning and additional tankers were brought on to site to assist. Correction

In last weeks edition of the TygerBurger,

we incorrectly stated that Nicolette Rheed-

er and Grant Twigg were the DA candi-

dates for ward 107. This followed incorrect

information given by the DA. The correct

candidate for ward 107 is Rheeder.

A Dunoon teenager was arrested this week

for breaking into vehicles in Table View.

According to a police report, the teenager

    (18) was caught during the early hours on

    Monday 13 June.

    Police spokesperson Captain Adriana

    Chandler says ConstableMphumzi Dyantyi

and colleagues received a complaint of tres-

passing at an address in Martin Crescent,

    Sunridge, and searched the area.

They discovered an unknown male hid-

ing behind a tree . The officers found an

item used for breaking into vehicles in his

    possession aswell. Presumable stolen items

were also found in his possession.

The suspect showed the officers where

the vehicle was parked that he had broken

into. The owner of the vehicle was in-

    formed.

He will appear in the Cape Town Magis-

trates Court today (Wednesday) on charges

of possession of car breaking implements,

possession of stolen property and theft out

    of motor vehicle.

An appeal is once againmade to the com-

munity not to leave valuable items inside

    their vehicles.

    remature public announcements on

the City of Cape Towns plan to estab-

lish a centre forhomeless people at the

Global School of Theology has seen the in-

stitute call off negotiations for a lease agree-

    ment with the municipality.

The debacle unfolded this week, when

    TygerBurger investigated rumours that the

institute was upset by public statements

made byCity officials on their plans to lease

    the property.

Plans for the establishment of the City of

Cape Town Restoration Centre were first

made public by councillor Joy McCarthy at

a subcouncil meeting in April. At the time,

    TygerBurger questioned the Citys social

    development department about their plans,

but was told the City was not able to go pub-

lic as the leasehadnot been finalised.Tyger-

    Burger questioned how public statements

could be made but was told to go to print

with the information already made public.

An editorial decisionwasmade to hold off

    until negotiations were finalised.

However, last week a newspaper article

surfaced indicating the project had been

given the green light quoting mayor Patri-

cia De Lille and Mayco member for social

    development and early childhood develop-

    ment, Suzette Little.

    TygerBurger resubmitted the original list

of questions and in awritten responseLittle

indicated the centrewas aimed at providing

services designed to address the medium to

long term needs and development of street

    people who want assistance.

In the response issued on Friday 10 June,

Little said they were finalising the lease

with the institute and if all went according

to plan, the centre would open in August

this year. Little said this property provides

a central location where homeless people

can go for help and further explained the

cost implications of this project will only be

known once the lease was finalised.

News about the new centre sparked ex-

citement among residents with the Table

    View Ratepayers Association (TVRA) and

    the Milnerton Community Policing Forum

(CPF) pledging their support. The excite-

ment, however, was short lived on Monday

    whenTygerBurger established the institute

    hadwithdrawn fromnegotiations citing the

premature public statements as the reason.

Charles White, director for the institute,

said following the publication of an article

stating the centre was going ahead, they

    were facedwithmanyhomeless people com-

ing to the college for help.

The reality is that the lease has not been

finalised and I have been instructed to call

off negotiations with the City because of all

the confusion since the newspaper article.

Nobody called us for confirmation and we

are very disappointed in the results. The

problem is we have students from all across

the world who are in the masters pro-

gramme and staff that stay on the site who

saw this article and went into a panic. This

could not have come at a worse time.

White said with a lease of this nature the

institute had very strict procedures which

have to be followed and the announcement

by the City has left a bad taste in every-

    ones mouth.

This has caused a huge nightmare for us

and we have not resumed talks with the

City. At this stage we have called off all ne-

gotiations around the lease, he said on

    Monday.

    When presented with this information

and asked what the City planned to do now,

Little said they would be going into a meet-

ing with the institute on Tuesday 14 June.

Until then she could not comment further.

    TVRA chairperson Mandy DaMatta says

she is disappointed at the outcome.

After singing the Citys praises a week

earlier, Da Matta expressed her utter dis-

may. She explained when she heard Little

had confirmed it in writing a week ago, she

was excited as the centre was needed and

welcomed by many. This week, however,

she questioned how the municipality could

    be so careless.

    Milnerton CPF chairperson Lianne Lip-

pert also expressed her dismay, saying this

centre was exactly what the community

    needed.

Sonnenberg says the manhole at the Surf

Club is the lowest point and the sewage

started overflowing at this point when the

sump reached a very high level.

This area was also barricaded off,

cleaned and sanitised on Friday and Satur-

    day after the spills.

Asked about the spill in January, Sonnen-

berg says this occurred on private infra-

structurewhile themost recent spill was at-

    tended to by the City.

The City of Cape Town operates a mas-

sive network of sewerage pipes and this, to-

gether with the sometimes random nature

of faults, makes it impossible to prevent ev-

    ery overflow.

He further says blockages occur when

residents flush inappropriate items into the

system, including cooking fat and rags.

The only way to reduce these incidences

is for residents to ensure that they do not

allow these substances to enter the system.

The previous burst occurred on private in-

frastructure. In these cases the property

    owner/managing agent is responsible.

    TygerBurger questionedwhypeoplewere

allowed onto the beach area if thewaterwas

    contaminated and according to Mayco

member for community services and spe-

    cial projects, BelindaWalker, theCity erect-

ed temporary signage indicating that the

water was unfit to swim in, and the sport,

    recreation and amenities department erect-

ed red barrier tape around the paving sand

area where the spill had occurred.

Members of the public were urged not to

go into the water and the local surf shops

    and ratepayers association were requested

to advise theirmembers not to enter thewa-

    ter.

DaMatta says this is not true as theTVRA

received no communication from the City.

During a visit to the beach, TygerBurger

    accessed the contaminatedarea fromanoth-

er walkway metres away from the blocked

    off area.

    Thiswalkwaywasnotblockedoff and sev-

eral people accessed the beach from here

some not even aware of what was happen-

    ing down the beach.

Asked why pieces of faeces that washed

up hand not been removed,Walker says: A

clean-up operation took place on Saturday

when thewater levels in themanholes were

stabilised, allowing for waste to be flushed

    away without further overflowing.

In addition the area was sanitised.

Walker also says temporary signage will

remain in place until sample results con-

firm the water is safe to use.

    applied for a search warrant.

    The search warrant was exe-

cuted at the address in West

    Beach on Thursday 9 June.

    Police spokesperson Cap-

    tain Adriana Chandler says

    inside the residence the offi-

    cers discovered various lap-

    tops containing information

    of passports and bank ac-

    count details, presumably

    those of victims of scams.

    One of the suspects grab-

bed a cellphone, took out the

sim card and flushed it down

    the toilet. He was immediate-

    ly arrested.

    After further investiga-

    tion it was discovered that

    the suspectswere involved in

    dating scams.

    Chandler says all the lap-

    tops and cellphones were

    confiscated as per the search

    warrant andhanded inas evi-

    dence for further investiga-

    tion. Large sums of cash,

    bank statements and bank re-

    ceipts were found and hand-

ed in at the police station.

At this stage it is not

    known whether the men

    scammed Table View resi-

dents and what the total val-

    ue of the scams are.

    Last monthMelkbosstrand

police issued an alert to those

    going online in searchof find-

ing a partner after they ar-

rested two men aged 27 and

    28. Police first arrested the

    men in March when they

    were found with drugs in

    their possession. During this

    search police also seized lap-

    tops and during investiga-

tions it was found that the

men were part of an interna-

    tional scamaimed at conning

    vulnerable lonely people out

    of their hard-earned cash.

    Police spokesperson Con-

    stable Debbie Alard ex-

plained at the time that the

    men had defrauded women

    out of thousands by creating

    fake profiles and conning

    women into fake relation-

    ships.

LEAVE THE WESTERN CAPE ALONE !!

Comeon now,we all knowhistory. Perhaps someof the younger generation

have been brainwashed with what is nowadays dished up as history, but

then you older folks should set the record straight. You may shoot the

messenger, but you can't change history. And history tells you that the

Western Cape belongs to the Khoi, the San, the Coloureds, theWhites and

the people of the Bo-Kaap. Now we have non-indigenous people flooding

the WC and setting fire to everything - tyres, cars, buses, trains and

buildings. A word of advice to them - the REAL Capies are getting gatvol

(fed-up) with this. You don't contribute to the economy but yet you demand

and demand. You are being pampered to by a local government who

overlooks the indigenous people who are the taxpayers and keeping the

    local economygoing.

So this brings me back to politics again.

I read through the manifests of the DA, ACDP and the Freedom Front Plus

(FF+). The DA just want to make the situation above far worse with bigger

social support, more stringent application of BBBEEandAA, fast tracking of

land restitution, etc. You as the voter have to read the manifests of all the

political parties and see which is most aligned with what you personally

    believe and support.

Remember that this coming election is a local government one. Dont fall for

the normal propaganda of a vote for a smaller party is a wasted vote. This

is simply not true. ALL votes for any party counts in the proportional voting

    system.

We are in the final stages of organizing the FACE YOUR VOTER

evening. We will post the details in next weeks article as well as on

    Facebook.

Remember your cross determines your future.

desperate plea to slow down speed-

sters in Phoenix and Joe Slovo has

been heard and residents can look for-

ward to safer streets before the end of June.

The plea came after a tragic accident

which involved two taxis. Three pedestrians

    diedandaccording toER24paramedics, they

found one person impaled in a taxi wind-

screen and two people lying on the sidewalk

    in Freedom Way.

At the time, Phoenix residents said while

they had completed forms requesting traffic

calming measures, they sit and watch how

more people die as traffic and taxi violations

    go ahead seemingly unabated.

    The Phoenix Ratepayers Association

    (PRA) chairperson UrsulaMarshall said the

problem with speeding has increased in re-

cent years prompting many complaints and

    concerns from residents.

    In recent weeks, councillor JoyMcCarthy

has revealed that the City of Cape Town has

    approved several traffic calming measures

which are set to be completed by the end of

    July.

I pushedhard for the traffic calming after

the horrific accident and all kudos to Johan

    Massyn, our roads engineer,whoassisted by

adding his support to the request.

She says the current island in Freedom

Way at the junction with Democracy Way

will be removed and will be replaced by a

raised intersection which will slow down

    traffic in both directions.

In addition there will be two speed-

bumps in Freedom Way, McCarthy ex-

    plains.

The traffic calmingmeasures will cost the

City more than R200 000 and once complete,

will make the area safer for all.

I know it will make the space safer, as no

vehicle should be able to speedwith this con-

figuration. It could even dissuade the con-

tainer trucks that are now using Freedom

    Way instead of Racecourse Road.

    Commuters get

    connected

Luthfia Frizlar and mayor Patricia de Lille test out the WiFi on a MyCiTi bus.

    T

he City of Cape Townhas launched the

pilot phase of WiFi provision on the

    MyCiTi buses this week.

According to a statement, this is part of

a pilot phase and WiFi has been installed

on 10MyCiTi buses, which will first be test-

ed on the various feeder routes across the

    city.

Once the service has been tested on the

feeder routes, the full roll-out will be ex-

panded to all 380 buses such as the trunk

routes in Atlantis, Table View, Mitchells

    Plain and Khayelitsha.

Passengers on these buses will be able to

connect their WiFi enabled devices includ-

    ing cellphones, laptops and tablets.

Late last year the City awarded a tender

to VAST Networks to provide and manage

the provision of WiFi on MyCiTi buses.

Basic use of the service will be free. Each

passengerwill have use of a limited amount

of data for a limitedamount of timeeachday

    at no charge.

Each passenger will receive 50 MB per

day to get connected and start working or

do research while travelling to and from

    work or school.

Passengers will be able to register to the

VAST WiFi in a few easy steps, click on

    complimentary access and start brows-

ing using the free 50 MB.

Once this allocation expires, userswill be

redirected to the homepage where they can

either buy WiFi vouchers or proceed back

    to using their own data.

An exciting part of this service is a free

VAST portal where commuters can browse

a range of content such as news, sport, lifes-

tyle and educational sites free of any data

    charges.

As part of the pilot phase, commuterswill

also be able to log into the WiFi at the Cape

    Town Metrorail station.

It was indeed an exciting day for me as

I was finally able to join passengers on

board a MyCiTi bus and connect to the in-

ternet, says mayor Patricia de Lille

The provision ofWiFi on theMyCiTi bus-

es is an integral part of the Citys Conges-

tion Relief Programme as this provides an

incentive to use public transport instead

private vehicles so that the number of cars

on the roads can be reduced.

During theproof of concept phase, the ser-

vice will be tested on 10 buses on various

routes and feedback from commuters will

be used to improve the servicewhere neces-

    sary.

Once we are satisfied with the perform-

ance and the pilot phase of six months is

    completed, WiFi will progressively become

available on all MyCiTi bus routes (380 bus-

es).We firmlybelieve that there is apositive

correlation between the availability of in-

ternet access and the social and economic

upliftment of communities, says De Lille.

Shes a keeper: Ndindi Kabbah is a very

talented netball player, playing for Table

View Primarys netball team, and was

selected as goalkeeper for the U13 Western

Province Netball Team. Although she plays

goal defence at school, she is very comfort

able playing both positions if required.

Ndindi absolutely loves netball and started

playing in Grade 3 and hopes to one day

play for the national netball team.

    Scarce nuclear skills harnessed

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    @monique_duval

    T

    he Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

buzzed with excitement last week as

    100nuclear recruits celebrated their in-

duction into Eskom Nuclear Operator Pipe-

    line project.

The event saw many Eskom executives

and government officials flock to the plant

for the grand celebration which was also at-

tended by national minister of public enter-

    prises Lynne Brown.

The project forms part of Eskoms plans

to beef up local nuclear resources to support

the countrys needs. At the beginning of

May, 100 young recruits started the flagship

    nuclear operator training programme at

    Koeberg Power Station.

Speaking at the official launch, plantman-

    ager Riedewaan Bakardien explained they

    launched this programmewith the objective

of ensuring that Koeberg has sufficient Flag

    operators for the future.

He said nuclear and reactor operators at

    Koeberg are internationally recognised as

    the flag-bearers of nuclear power.

When one goes to a nuclear power sta-

tion, the first thing you lookat is the nuclear

operators. Are they competent, are they

qualified, are their behaviours good? We

have a lot riding on the success of the people

who we have brought in. This programme

presents a robust pipeline and a model to

replicate for nuclear power in South Africa.

Their development is critical to Koebergs

    long term success, he said.

    Bakardien explained the programme also

    highlighted transformation within Eskom

and said he was pleased to note that 40% of

    the young recruits are women.

Importantly, they come from all across

South Africa. Koeberg is not just about the

Western Cape. This nuclear initiative is for

the whole country. The road ahead for these

students will not be as nice as today. A lot

of hard work lies ahead. The training is in-

tensive. It takes five years just to get through

    the programme.

In the next two years, students will under-

go 62weeks of classroomand practical train-

ing. He said the Koeberg nuclear training

    programme was the only programme

which was besides the American pro-

    gramme internationally accredited by the

    International Nuclear Plant Operators Or-

    ganisation.

Brown said the project provided a plat-

    form fordevelopinga robustnuclear opera-

    tor pipeline for South Africa.

    The programme, spanning five years,

aims to build a path to ensure that there

are sufficient local nuclear resources to

service the countrys present and future

    nuclear needs.

After the five-year period, trainees will

qualify as nuclear plant operators or will

    enter related career equivalents.

What is inspiring is that approximately

95% of students are 35 years and younger,

and about 40% are black females from vari-

ous parts of the country, said Brown

Chairman of the Eskom board, Dr Bald-

win Ngubane, says the countrys new nucle-

ar build requires additional resources for

operations, and the nuclear operator train-

ing programme is geared towards ensuring

that the South African youth who have aspi-

rations to access a career path in nuclear,

has a chance at realising their dreams.

According to a statement, the 100 young

qualified artisans will be exposed to world-

class nuclear training in the Western Cape

for a period of five years before qualifying

    asNuclear PlantOperators or related career

    equivalent.

As the only nuclear power station in Afri-

ca, the licensed reactor operators who oper-

ate the Koeberg reactors are scarce.

    Riedewaan Bakardien, plant manager of

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, outlines the

    various aspects of the projects.

National minister of public enterprises, Lynne Brown, releases birds at the launch of the project.

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    M

    elkbosstrand police are on high

alert following a spate of burglaries

    where the perpetrators use crow-

    bars to gain access.

In the most recent incident on Thursday

9 June, police say three men in a white VW

Polo were spotted knocking on doors in

    Samuel Close in Duynefontein.

    Police spokesperson Constable Debbie

Alard says according to reports when resi-

dents passed the vehicle themen pretended

to be busy with paper work.

They broke into a house in Samuel Close

using a crowbar and took various valuables

includinga laptop and television. It appears

just after 14:00 the men scouted the area by

knocking on doors to see if residents were

home before attempting to break in, she

    says.

This incident follows three other inci-

dents in the Melkbosstrand police precinct

and took place shortly after police released

    a warning statement.

In the statement, Alard says the first inci-

dent took place in Reiger Street on Tuesday

    24Mayat about 12:10whenofficers received

a call about a break-in. On arrival they

found the front door and safety gate were

forced open by means of a crowbar.

The safe was also forced open. The own-

er was contacted and it was confirmed that

a flat screen TV, laptop and American cur-

rency was stolen. Further information re-

vealed that three unknown males were

spotted carrying a TV and placing it in a sil-

ver SUV with CEM number plates at the

back. At this stage no arrests have been

    made.

Four days later the caretaker of a house

in Amble Way found the security door was

forced open with a crowbar and two flat

    screen televisions were taken.

This was followed by an incident in Jans-

sens Crescent on Thursday 2 June when a

homeowner returned home to find that her

door and safety gate were forced opened by

a crowbar and a television and briefcase

    were stolen.

    Melkbosstrand station commander, Cap-

tain Ronita van der Toorn, haswarned resi-

dents to be on the lookout for suspicious

people or vehicles in their neighbourhoods

    and report it.

It is important to be acquainted with

your neighbours and to know what is hap-

pening in your street and community. Join

in the fight against crime by joining your

    local neighbourhood watch and street

watch to assist in curbing crime.

Alard says the use of crowbars by crimi-

nals to gain access to homes is widespread

across Cape Town and says reports refer-

ring to a crowbar gang are actually explain-

    ing the modus operandi.

There is not just one crowbar gang. Us-

ing a crowbar is a modus operandi used by

many criminals to gain entry to a home or

    business.

She has also made a request for informa-

tion that can lead to the recovery of the

stolen goods and the arrest of the perpetra-

    tors.

V Anybody with any video footage of the incidents

or information is asked to call police 021 553 8200

or the sector vehicle on 079 894 1640.

    Melkbosstrandpolicehave recoveredavehi-

cle hijacked in Bellville during May.

    According to a police report, a 47-year-old

man was arrested while travelling along the

M19 in the direction of the N7 highway on

    Tuesday 7 June at 17:20.

    Police spokesperson Constable Debbie Al-

ard says the vehicle was hijacked by three

armed men on Friday 20 May and the men

demanded the owner out of the vehicle.

    Last week Melkbosstrand police received

an alert that the vehiclewas travelling along

theM19 and a police vehicle was dispatched.

The stolen vehicle was tested by the Stik-

    land Police Vehicle Safeguarding Service

Unit and it was a positive link to Bellville

    hijacking case. The Melkbosstrand station

commander, Captain Ronita van der Toorn,

thanked the community for the information

that led to the recovery of the vehicle and

arrest of the perpetrator. She also commend-

ed the officers involved, says Alard.

The suspect appeared in the AtlantisMag-

    istrates Court .

    New school nears completion

    C

onstruction on the new R47 million

SinenjongoHigh School in Joe Slovo is

    nearing completion.

    Last week, provincial education minister

    Debbie Schfer and provincial transport

minister Donald Grant visited the construc-

tion site where work began in February.

The Sinenjongo project is due to be com-

pleted by December in time for the start

    of the 2017 school year.

It has been a collaborative effort between

    the Western Cape Education Department,

the Department of Transport and Public

Works and the Rabie Property Group.

Grant and Schfer were joined on site by

the principal, Kuselwa Nopote, as well the

    managing director for Rabie Property

Group, LeonCohen, and the groups commu-

nications manager, Maggie Rowley, for a

    site inspection.

The new school will consist of 33 class-

rooms, eight specialist classrooms, four sci-

ence laboratories, ablution and storage facil-

ities, an administration block, a computer

room, school hall and media centre as well

    as a dedicated sports field.

The new school will accommodate more

than 1200 learners who mainly reside in the

    surrounding areas of Milnerton.

    While construction has been underway,

the learners of SinenjongoHigh School have

been temporarily accommodated at a tempo-

rary school site in Joe Slovo.

Under Nopotes leadership and with the

assistance of the Rabie Foundation, the

schools NSC results have more than dou-

    bled from 43,9% in 2009 to 90,6%.

I am very excited about the new school,

and so are all our teachers and learners. We

cant wait to get into the new school build-

ing. We are also looking forward to having

a school hall and sports field, says Nopote.

Thedevelopment of this school is regarded

as a wonderful example of how the private

    sector can invest in education

Rabie Property Group has become a val-

ued part of the Sinenjongo High School com-

munity, having adopted the school as itsma-

    jor corporate social investment beneficiary

in 2007. Thegroup has continued to provide

support for the school, sponsoring addition-

al teaching posts in maths and science, as

well as a number of programmes aimed at

    increasing proficiencies in English, mathe-

    matics and science.

The Rabie Property Group also played a

significant role in identifying the new

    school site.

Education provides the key to escape

poverty and the future of our country de-

pends on a commitment from both the pri-

vate and public sectors to improve the stan-

dard of education for the benefit of all. We

are fully committed to Sinenjongo and the

    successful turnaround that has been

achieved there has only been possible due

to the reciprocal commitment of the Educa-

tion Department, the principal, the teachers

    and the learners, says Cohen.

The department of transport and public

works project team has done exceptionally

well to deliver a state-of-the-art facilitywith-

in budget and the required time, ready for

the start of the new school year.

This is just one of the projects that the two

departments are collaborating on, with the

WCED having budgeted R1,29 billion in

2016/17 on building and refurbishing school

    infrastructure across the province.

The R47 million Sinenjongo High School

project has also seen the creation of Expand-

ed Public Works Programme (EPWP) work

    opportunities through the project, including

the vital skills training component. A total

of R6m is expected to go towards targeted

contractor businesses, R5m to suppliers and

manufacturers, and R5m to targeted local la-

bour, with 111 local labourers employed.

Pictured during the site visit are, from left, provincial education minister Debbie Schfer, principal

Kuselwa Nopote, provincial transport minister Donald Grant and managing director for Rabie

    Property Group Leon Cohen.

    W

    hat if TygerBurgerwerent a news-

    paper, but a broadcasting agency?

What if you werent bound to lis-

ten to hyper local news impacting on the

suburb you live in, but rather the northern

    suburbs as a whole?

Would this then contradict what Tyger-

    Burger stands for?

Followers of the newspaper on Facebook

would have noticed a new feature a

weekly wrap-up video posted every Tues-

    day.

In this short video some of the articles

that appear in the newspaper are highlight-

ed, giving you the biggest weekly news

from the northern suburbs in bite-sized

    chunks.

    Some broadcasters bring you global

news, some focus on a particular city, but

no-one targets a relatively small area such

    as the northern suburbs.

This means, of course, that the newspa-

per continues to set the bar of hyper local

    content across all mediums.

One of WP Medias journalists, Brenden

Ruiter, asked himself how one can spread

the news in a digital world, and make it as

easy as possible for Facebook users to stay

    up to date.

The answer was simple, he says.

Why not a weekly news bulletin? We

started amonth or two ago and the popular-

ity of the videos is for all to see. Its still a

work in progress, of course, with finer de-

    tails still being ironed out.

A couple of minutes a week to stay up to

date with news headlines? The viewers

convenience is clearly the catch phrase.

Another imminent adoption will be roll-

ing text at the bottom, which will mean one

canwatch the video with no sound if neces-

    sary.

In essence, it is a news broadcast with a

very brief description of the chosen arti-

    cles.

If one snippet piques your interest, you

can read more about it on the newspapers

free website under the Netwerk24 domain.

All you need to do is type tygerburger.co.za

into the URL bar of your browser.

The same concept has also been em-

braced by the southern suburbs Peoples

Post, so in just six minutes you can get a

    community newspapers perspective of

happenings in the whole of Cape Town.

Peoples Post journalist and bulletin pre-

senter Samantha Lee says the additional

challenge has been an exciting venture

    thus far.

It is no secret that news and the media

are moving into a digital space.

This venture helps us satisfy the news

needs of those on the move and assists our

journalists in telling the inspiring stories

of others thatmay not havemade it into the

    readers relevant editions.

The response thus far is an indication

that this truly is a step in the right direction

    for WP Media.

    Ranting over

    rising rental

    rates

At the start of July my 22-month-old baby

boy will be living in his third home

    poor kid.

It has gotten so bad that his first

coherent sentence might very well be

    Pack it in a box.

Quite astonishingly, I have moved 23

times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I know

what Im talking about when it comes to

    rental prices.

It has also struck me how little home

owners know about the price of renting a

    decent place in Cape Town.

All they are concerned about is wheth-

er they will be paying a little more or a

little less next month due to the interest

    rate.

As rental tenants we face an industry

standard annual price hike of 10%!

Every year we are 10% poorer! Add

half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful of

inflation and you have a baked monstros-

    ity that chips teeth.

    In just seven

    years from now

    one can expect to

    pay double one

    pays now!

    A shoestring

    budget can only be

    cut so much. Soon

    there will be no

    shoestring left!

    Agents and

    owners who rent

    out their properties

    have no problem

    getting tenants

    because of the

    great migration

from the rest of the country to Cape

    Town.

    Someone ought to tell Gautengers

perhaps they are better off in the north.

I compared renting prices from Gaut-

eng and Cape Town this week. I fully

expected to see a similarity in what you

    can get for R10 000 a month.

With that money I can rent a nice

townhouse with an impressive garden in

one of the best security complexes in

Pretoria. In Cape Town I have seen

    smaller townhouses with smaller gardens

in Kraaifontein go for R10 000.

I love Cape Town, but something

drastically needs to happen to curb

renting prices, which are quite obviously

    completely out of control.

The only way to keep head above water

    seems to buy property.

The other day I went into a book store

and saw one in the self-help section about

    empowering a middle income household

to buy a house in South Africa.

I paged through it in disbelief and

returned it to where it belongs the

    fiction section. Rent-a-lot

    There are many complexes

    scattered around the Blouberg/

    past these places on rubbish

    tion, the various gardeners

    stand with hosepipes cleaning

the bins and washing all the

    debris straight down the

    gutters and into the stormwa-

    ter drains!

A couple of things spring to

    mind. Firstly, what happened

    to water conservation? Second-

ly, where do you think all this

debris is going to end up?

Well, simply put, it ends up

    in our waterways or clogging

    the system up with forever

    plastic and various nondegrad-

    able rubbish bits.

The gardeners do not have a

clue and are instructed to do a

    job, no matter what the

    consequences, so the problem

    would be with the body

    corporates and trustees.

ney a career spanning five decades.

    Affectionately known by many Capetoni-

ans as Mr Showbiz, Alvon was recently

honoured with a Naledi Lifetime Achieve-

mentAward for his contribution to the South

    African entertainment industry.

To win that award was wonderful; it was

absolutely stunning for me, because I

thought I was a forgotten man.

Alvon spent a large portion of his career

in Johannesburg where he won a Gallo

Award and Three Leaf Award (now called

Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards) for his break-

out role as the Pharoh in Joseph and the

Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat- a role he

played inmore than 3000 performances of the

    production.

The now 75-year-old returned to Cape

Town at the age of 42. Then I built a whole

new career here. Alvon admits to working

    veryhard, hiringhalls and settinguphis own

shows. I had to believe in myself that this

was all going to come together and slowly but

surely this became a way of life for me.

His Cape Town chapter turned out to be as

illustrious as Johannesburg with Alvon re-

ceiving Civic Honours from the City of Cape

Town. His regular shows, like his upcoming

Fathers Day celebration and his annual free

Spirit of Christmas concert, which hes host-

ed at Cape Town City Hall for the last 15

years, have become staples of the Cape Town

    entertainment calendar. Perhaps his biggest

contribution to the industry, though, is all

the talented performers hes nurtured along

    the way.

Walking through his home, Faried Swartz,

one of these performers, points to photos on

Alvons walls, listing names and achieve-

ments of all the stars Alvon hasworkedwith.

In his Spirit of Christmas concert alone,

hes worked with about 50 children each

year. Ive watched little people who played

Jesus who are now playing Joseph.

Then there are singers like Lana English

who stared in Phantom of the Opera. Lanas

Theyre all my kids who Ive tried to help.

Theyre all an extension of me and the link

    has never been broken.

Renee Osborne, who will be singing in his

Fathers Day show, adds a lot of people come

    to Alvons door.

And he just opens more doors for them,

    says Osborne.

Working with young people is something

that runs in the family. Alvons grandmoth-

er, a school teacher, was the well-respected

Christine Revell, after whom the Christine

    Revell ChildrensHome inAthlone is named.

She was the one who inspired me to do

what Im doing, Alvon exclaims. She took

me to a concert at City Hall and I fell in love

with the stage, he recalls fondly. I thought:

I want to be here one day, and now I am.

After half a century on stage, Alvon says

hes been truly blessed to be able to keep do-

    ing what he loves.

I love my life, he says proudly.

Hes a community activist, an educator,

    a father, a husband and a hip-hop artist.

Emile YX? or Emile Jansen as his

family knows him is no stranger to

Cape Town and South African hip-hop

fans. In fact, the Black Noise founding

member has been instrumental in grow-

ing the local hip-hop scene, but hismany

achievements will be introduced to an

    international audience later this year

when Break like You, a documentary

about his work, will be screened at the

inaugural New York Hip-hop Film Festi-

    val.

    The documentary producers inter-

viewed various people and heard about

my story from someone and they just ap-

proached me about telling my story,

Emile explains of the short film

shot by Mehreen Afzal and Melissa

House as part of the BarefootWork-

    shops last year.

Its a very honest story about be-

    ing a community activist, father,

    husband, artist and educator

through arts and culture and how

    healing can happen through giving

    of oneself.

The film comes off the back of a

busy period for Emile who recent-

ly won the SABC 3 breakfast show

    EspressosMandelaMondayAward

along with a LeadSA Hero Award

    in April.

Hes also just sent five dancers to

compete at Battle VNR in France

    and wrapped up Positive Poster

Week, a campaign run through his

    Heal the Hood project.

Emile started Heal the Hood as a

    community organisation in 1998

with the aim to changeminds to change

    action.

The organisations focus this year is

    oneight schools and twocommunity cen-

    tres on theCapeFlatswhere they inspire

young people to become artistically ac-

tive through songs, music videos and

    book.

We are also focussing our energies on

    changing the negative dialogue that

dominates the Cape Flats youth to a posi-

tive one of outcomes and action.

    Emiles own artistic journey started

    with break-dancing or a B-boy, before he

went on to try his hand at graffiti, beat-

boxing and rapping all elements of hip-

hop culture. Dancing is what first at-

tracted him to the culture and he says it

challenged his fear of people seeing him

in the middle of a circle.

Without knowing it, it was about me

finding me and showing myself to the

    world.

As a man of few words, he says he

knew he had to do something about it.

This is a philosophy that hes carried

throughout his career and why he now

    calls himself a reactionary activist.

We did not have a space, so we took

action and danced on the streets, he

says, adding: We took action to teach

each other ourselves, and thats activ-

    ism.

When Emile and his crew found them-

selves with no events to perform at, they

created their own, before creating com-

    petitionand then touring first national-

ly and then internationally. With no

how-to guide, they printed their own

CDs, DVDs and books and created their

own production to be able to make a liv-

ing from their art. It was the beginning

of what would become a vibrant South

    African hip-hop culture.

We are proud to say that we played

a role in making that dream a reality for

    many people today.Mymain reasonwas

    always aboutmy creative desire tomake

new things, to manifest the word and

show youth that with determination and

    perseverance anything is possible.

    Emiles contributions to his communi-

ty have been highlighted most recently

    through his Mandela Monday Hero

award and LeadSA award, but last year

he was also chosen as the face of the Mo-

shito Music Conference where he was

awarded for his contribution to hip-hop.

The year before he won an honorary

award at the South African Hip-hop

    Awards.

His work is about more than awards

though. As a citizen, it is my duty to

take action on civic issues, the activist

    explains.

For Emile, this means leading by ex-

ample and not just talking about

change, but taking action to make it re-

    al.

The action taker will soon be heading

to America to see his son and wife who

are with her family in Ohio, before head-

ing to the New York hip-hop Film Festi-

val. Hell be back in Cape Town in mid-

August to host the Cape Flats Film Festi-

val before going into studio to work on

his ninth solo album. Also on his agenda

for the rest of the year are his first DVD

compilation made up of music videos

and a book about Black Noise and hip-

hop in Cape Town. Hes also considering

a doctorate in Education and Hip-hop

    Pedagogy at an international university.

Emile will participate in a Q&A ses-

    sion after the screening of
