Themelody of the CapeMusic Institute is onthemove, as it provides the best training forthe entertainment industry. It originally started out inKensington, but

that venue became too small and they hadto move to Kuils River. Now it seems thatthey need to be in a stadium, and that is justwhat they have done. This facility is now at the Athlone Stadi-

um where they have taken over the eastwing of the second floor of the facility. There’s still lots of activity around the

place as we talk to principal of the facility,

well-knownmusician and producer CamilloLombard.“We’re still getting everything into

shape,” he says as work goes on around stu-dents busy in classes and in rehearsalrooms.“There’s lots to do butwe are getting there

but very happy to be in bigger premises. An-other bonus with this move is that we haveour own performance space and we will bestarting regular showcases there verysoon.”Lombard pointed out that one of the big-

gest reasons for their growth over the pastfew years is that they built up a reputation

for producing entertainers of top qualitythat can perform on any stage across theworld.“We’re very proud of our alumni, even

though we have only been in existence fora relatively short time.“In that time we have seen many of our

students getting great gigs across the world, and that extends our reputation whereverthey perform. In South Africa we have per-formed with the best and we’re even im-pressing our international visitors.”On the local scene students regularly form

parts of bands, and provide backing vocal-ists for the likes of Allistair Izobell, Karen

Kortje, DannyK, LloydCele, aswell as Louk-maan and Emo Adams.Jonathan Butler always uses the institute

when he tours in South Africa and Africa, and they were also in action with the recentPeaches and Herb tour in South Africa.“I think this hands-on approach to learn-

ing is what makes the students come here,”continues Lombard.“You have to apply yourself to your stud-

ies and thenput it intopractise on the stage.”Auditions are open for 2014.V For further information about the facility call 021637 0327 during office hours, or 079 550 0796, oremail [email protected].

in Fabriek Street where the FNB Challengebetween Kasselsvlei Technical School andBellville South Secondarywas taking place.According to the City of Cape Town they

were alerted to the incident at about 12noon.Initial reports indicated that at least three

people were injured when the pavilion atthe sports field gave way resulting in thespectators falling.Three patients that sustained injuries

were transported to Tygerberg Hospital formedical treatment, but luckily there wereno fatalities.Deon Visagie (36) was treated for a sus-

pected spinal and hip injury, however hewas discharged later that day.John Bester (59) and Melicia Theunissen

(17) were also admitted to hospital.Bester underwent an abdominal scan and

X-rays were taken on Melicia Theunissenfor suspected spinal injuries and they werestill awaiting the results from the surgeonon duty at the hospital.Accordingly to eyewitness accounts the

spectators overloaded the pavilion standwhile cheering for the players competing inthe FNB Challenge when the unfortunateincident occurred.Another spectator at the event who did

not want to be named pointed out that ini-tially the public was not informed aboutwhat happened.“All we heard was the announcement for

medics to report to that side of the field, butthere was no other information.

“Only later we found out that the standhad collapsed injuring people.”Chairman of Bellville Rugby Club, Roger

Hendricks confirmed the incident and add-ed that 12 supporters were injured of whichfive went to hospital for observation.“Our medical staff that was on duty that

daywas on the scene immediately,” he said.“In this regard we would like to mention

that Chandre Jarvis, Madeleine Miller, So-nia Mckenzie and Ian Fortuin, did an excel-lent job in assisting to stabilise those thatwere injured.“The Bellville Rugby Clubwould also like

to make use of this opportunity to wishthose that were injured well.”The exact cause of the collapse of the

stand is unclear at this stage. The city’sSport, Recreation and Amenities Depart-menthave requested thebuilding inspector-ate to investigate the incident.

Learners, staff proud oflong history of excellenceGARY VAN DYK

The roses have been blooming at RosewoodPrimary in Bonteheuwel for 50 years, andare still going strong. One of themajor strengths that the school

is proud of, is that teachers tend to staythere with seven of them at the school formore than 30 years.Principal Fahema Meyer is one of them

with 37 years at the school, and she pointedout that the foundation for the prestige ofthe school was laid down with its first prin-cipal, the late Abdullah Brown when thedoors of the school opened in 1963.“He served the school for 15 years and un-

der his proficient leadership, the characterand ethos of the school was established,”she said.“In 1978 he was succeeded by William

Truter who continued to build on and con-solidate the structures that were put inplace, and he stayed with the school untilhis retirement in 1995, proving that longevi-ty that we have at this school.”Meyer, who took over the reins in 2010,

felt that what works at the school is thattheyareblessed tohavededicated, loyal andcommitted teachers who want only the bestfor their learners.“These educators always believed and

still believe that each child is special. Theycontinually strive to develop the child holis-tically, thus they arrange regular educa-tional excursions to places of interest, aswell as special activities in which learners, their parents and the community partici-pate.“Part of our success is that we are in-

volved with extra-mural activities thatrange from arts and culture with participa-tion in various music and dance pro-grammes, to sport andvarious environmen-tal programmes.”

The school also plays an important partin the community which surrounds it.They participate in anti-drug and anti-

crime campaigns, organise marches forpeace and human chains to promote safetyin the area.“Our learners regularly visit the Lilyha-

ven Home for the Aged where they interactwith the senior citizens and hand out fruitbaskets,” added Meyer.“We also donate to the League of Friends

of the Blind, Red Cross Children’s Hospitaland also to the Bonteheuwel Paralegal So-ciety.”Currently the school boasts an upgraded

resource centre that was started by Biblio-nef and a computer lab set up by Khanyaand these facilities are utilised by all lear-ners on a daily basis. There is a also a beautiful veggie garden

which supports the nutritional programmeat school to empower and encourage lear-ners and the community to grow their ownvegetables.Theyhave anumber of events planned for

the rest of the year to celebrate but theywillbe kicking it off on Saturday 8 June with aAnniversary Back to School dance that willbe held in the hall of Modderdam HighSchool. There will also be a reunion high tea in

Youth development is coming into the spot-light with some new initiatives by the city.

In keeping with this administration’scommitment to building a Caring and SafeCity, the City of Cape Town Social Develop-ment and Early Childhood DevelopmentDirectorate have begun implementing anumber of projects specifically aimed atyouth development.

These include two Expanded PublicWorks Programme job creation projects, providing support to organisations fromthe communities that youth reside in to as-sist them to gain works skills.

This is linked to the work skills trainingproject that provides two-month job oppor-tunities to apply the skills learnt throughthe training provided by the city

There will also be life skills training ses-sions with school-going youth as part of anextramural activity.

Six work and employment skills trainingworkshops for unemployed and out ofschool youth at risk through theUniversityof the Western Cape will also be takingplace while the Cape Peninsula Universityof Technology will be arranging six organi-sational capacity-building workshops fororganised youth structures, networks andforums.

“Young people need opportunities likethese to engage in meaningful activities, have a voice, take responsibility for theiractions, and actively participate in civicdiscourse,” said mayoral committee mem-ber for social development and early child-hood development, Suzette Little.

She also pointed out that this programmewants to facilitate youngpeople’s entry intothe job market and thus work towards re-ducing youth unemployment levels by pro-vidingyoungpeoplewithworkandemploy-ment skills, support and training.

“Through this initiativewewant to buildpartnerships and networks to render sup-port to youth at risk in a co-ordinated man-ner by collaboratingwith other line depart-ments, other spheres of government partic-ularly the Provincial Department of SocialDevelopment and civil society.

“We hope to increase youth involvementand active citizenship by building the ca-pacity of youth organisations and leadersto become agents in their own developmentwho make meaningful contributions totheir communities

“We know that gangsterism and sub-stance abuse are rife. And that the high un-employment rate increases their chances ofgetting involved in dangerous activities.

“It is therefore our hope that by provid-ing added opportunities for Cape Town’syoung people, we will assist them to reachtheir full developmental potential and be-come healthy and happy adults who areable to contribute significantly and posi-tively to their communities,” she said.

Hier is ek baie onafhanklik.

Volgens Annaleen Nel, be-stuurder, is Parow se Senior-sentrum in 1984 gestig.

Chilli Boys chipper about their league raceTHOMAS CAROLUS

ChippaUnited secured their place in theAb-sa Premier League play-offs when they cameback from a goal down to beat AmaZulu 2-1at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturdayafternoon. It was a result that ensured theChilli Boys

have a say in their own destiny, with achance of survival via the promotion/rele-gation play-offs.“We’ve done everything we could,” the

Chippa United coach Mark Harrison said.“Our last six games, we’ve won three and

drew three and I don’t think you can ask formore.“In the end that’s only enough to take us

to the play-offs but with the confidence andthe character in that squad, we’ve got everychance of staying in the PSL now.’’Chippa United will now join the second

and third placed National First Divisionclubs in a three team league style competi-tion that will decide who the 16th team is innext year’s Absa Premier League.Harrison added that they will now go all

out towin the play-off and retain their statusin the top flight league, with theEnglishman

banking on their form and experience tokeep them in the top league.Usuthu took an early lead through Bonga-

ni Ndulula, but the Cape based side repliedafter the break through two well taken pen-alties from substitute Brent Carelse. The opening goal arrived in the fourth

minute when Njabulo Manqana burst intothe box from the left before forcing a lowsave from Tashrique Goldman; Issa Sarrthen tried to clear the lines, but Ndululawasable to deflect the ball into the net. However, theCape side cameback into the

match three minutes into the second half

when they were awarded a penalty as Wil-liam Twala was brought down by TapuwaKapini in the box.Carelse who had come on for Welcome

Qalanto at half-time, stepped up to take thespot kick and calmly slotted the ball into thebottom right corner, sending Kapini thewrong way.The visitors were then awarded another

penalty in the 75th minute.Carelse took the responsibility again and

tucked the ball past a diving Kapini and intothe bottom right corner of the net to securemaximum points for his side.

Ajax end season in victory just clear of relegationTHOMAS CAROLUS

Ajax Cape Town ended their season on ahigh note when they clinched a 3-0 victoryover Golden Arrows in a Absa Premier lea-gue match at the Athlone Stadium on Satur-day afternoon.TheUrbanWarriors, needing a point from

their last match of the season to steer clearof the relegation zone got off to a great start

when Khenyeza slotted home the openinggoal as early as theninthminute of thegame.A good passingmove down the right flank,

starting at right back with Cecil Lolo endedwhen Khama Billiat played the ball to Khe-nyeza who made no mistake from close ran-ge.GoldenArrows took the game toAjax after

the opening goal, enjoying the bulk of pos-session as the the home team defended their

lead.The UrbanWarriors played counter attac-

king football and the ploy almost paid offwith Manyama, Billiat and Khenyeza lea-ding their attack, on the stroke of halftimeManyama played the ball into the path ofKhenyeza but unfortunately the pass did notfind its intended target.Minutes later, Billiat beat the off-side trap

as he ran onto a pass from Shabalala, but he

could not find the back of the net.In the 65thminute Golden Arrows created

an opportunity to equalize but Musoda’sshot at goal flew high and wide. The game came to life in the 72nd minute

when Losper scored from close range fromKhenyeza’s cut-back. Khenyeza finished offthe afternoon with his second goal on theday, scoring from a Lance Davids cross tosecure all three points on offer.
