Things are not always what they seem.Last week two people were hijacked,

kidnapped, robbed and then releasedand yet thisweek they are in court on a char-ge of man-stealing (a charge similar to kid-napping) and aggravated robbery.Milnerton police spokesperson Warrant

Officer Daphne O’Reilly said at approxima-tely 11:00 on Wednesday last week, a hijac-king case was reported to Milnerton police.The victim, a 26 year old woman fromHano-ver Park, was allegedly drivingwith her col-league onCentury Boulevard towards CanalWalk on theway to deposit companymoney.The two stopped at a pedestrian crossing

for a man to cross the street, when he sud-denly darted towards them pointing a fire-

arm.He forced himself into the back of the car

and told her to drive towards VanguardDrive.“The suspect searched both the victimand

her colleague and took the money whichthey had to deposit. In Vanguard Drive thesuspect instructed the victim to stop the ve-hicle where he threatened them and got out.Theunharmedvictimand colleague drove

to thenearest police stationwhere she repor-ted the incident.That is where the story would have ended

were it not for the sterlingwork done byMil-nerton detectives.“Excellent investigationwork” found that

the victim and her husband (who was not inthe car) orchestrated thewhole incident andthat a third party was also involved.

Five globe-trotting stuffed rhinos havecontributed to one of the highest ho-nours for a Table View teacher.

But for Elkanah House senior primary’shead of digital learning, Karen Stadler, theaward she is about to receive in Americais secondary to what the Travelling RhinoProject is all about.

Stuffed rhinos Lilitha, Lesedi, Siyanda,Zintle and Makulu ultimately create awa-reness surrounding the plight of one ofSouth Africa’s Big Five.

Along with a journal, each of the rhinostravel around the world to school childreneagerly anticipating the stuffed animal’sarrival.

Children write in the journal about theiradventures with the rhino and then mailthe rhino and journal to the next school,sometimes located on another continent.

Unfortunately one of the five rhinos(Zindzi) disappeared on a bus in HongKong.

Zintle was chosen as a replacement and,as a result, was sent to Singapore. She hassince returned to South Africa.

Each rhino carries a message of hopeand cooperation.

Thanks to Stadler, children from all overthe world are now aware of the rhino’splight.

Such a grand project deserves grand re-cognition, and that is exactly what the In-ternational Society for Technology in Edu-cation (ISTE) did by honouring Stadler.

She is the winner of the SIGOL (ISTE’sonline learning special interest group) On-line Learning Award and she will be flyingto Atlanta in July to accept it.

“I am blown away... I’ve been a teacherfor 25 years and this is it,” said a delightedKaren.

“ I was a regular teacher up until 2007,but from the next year I’ve been workingin the IT department and working with in-tegration, and that’s where my passion re-ally started.”

Karen belongs to the Global ClassroomProject, a group of international teacherswho promote global connections and pro-jects.

“I realised from using those connectionsI could create a flat-standing type of projectwith the rhinos,” she said.

Stadler first heard the rhino’s plightwhen she went on holiday to the KrugerNational Park in July 2012.

“I took a photograph of five rhino drinkingwater and then became interested in poa-ching statistics. It haunted me. I thought ofthe possibility of those five rhinos still beingalive. It’s practically zero by now... I wonde-red what I could do and joined the Rootingfor Rhino School Route Challenge, and it gotme thinking about what else I could do. Ididn’t have money to throw at it, but I neededto make a difference.”

That’s when she launched her Travelling

Rhino Project.The rhinos spread word of their plight on

The heavy bass sound travels unhin-dered through the night into the su-burb.

A Parklands woman and her husbandhears the noise mostnights, especially overthe weekends. Accordingto her these “unbearablesounds” sometimesthump on well into thenight and early morning.

“Sometimes I hear it upuntil 05:00,” she exclaims.

At first she thought thenoises were coming froma nearby home, but uponinspection she discover-ed it emanates fromnightclubs.

Now she is calling onthe community living ne-ar Parklands Main and Link Road tostand up and complain to law enforce-ment.

“Somethingmust be done! It cannot goon this way,” she says.

The woman does not want to be na-med, she merely wants to “plant a seed”of discontent.

According to her law enforcementwillonly do something about the noise ifenough people complain.

Not so, says law enforcement servicesspokesperson, Neil Arendse.

“We carefully consider every com-plaint, regardless of how many peoplesupport it,” he says.TygerBurger contacted a few of the

nightclubs in question, and all of themclaim to diligently follow the rule of law.

Manager of Mingles Lounge Par-klands, Sam Ide, says law enforcementhas visited the club before “but we arealways within the law”. “We recom-mend all nightclub owners to stick totheir licence agreement,” says Ide.

One of the nearby clubs have, howe-ver, indicated that Ming-les Lounge Parklands tra-de much later than the2am deadline their licen-ce stipulates.

According to this per-son they have footage toprove this and say Ming-les’ sound system is “twi-ce as powerful” as theirown.

The man says peoplecomplain, but nothing isbeing done about it.

Ide strongly denies anywrongdoing and says hegoes home at 02:00 and

Mingles closes at that time.According to the City of Cape Town,

noise can be defined as “unwantedsound”, and an audible acoustic energythat adversely affects the physiologicaland/or psychological well-being of peo-ple, or which disturbs or impairs theconvenience or peace of any person.

The Parklands couple have been li-ving in the area for 20 years and for thelast three have been disturbed by the no-ise and their peace has been shattered.According toAssistant ChiefNathanLa-degourdie the appropriate by-law statesthat if music is audible outside a premi-ses it constitutes an offence. He also saidthat the nightclubs in the vicinity havebeen previouslywarned about excessivenoise emanting from their premises.

Hy het dit met Janine de Waal, ’nargitek en kunstenaar van Durbanville, by-gewoon en hulle het besluit om saam ’n pro-jek te doen.“Ons het onsself afgevra, Suid-Afrika is

Scam artists who “rent” out propertiesthat already have people living in them areon the increase in the Table View policeprecinct according to Detective SergeantDesmond November.

The fraud investigator recently ensuredthat a Table View man was found guiltyon three counts of fraud and sentenced tofour years imprisonment.

As a result November has warned thepublic to be vigilant when renting proper-ty.

He also sends out a stern warning tofraudsters.

“If you slip up then I’ll be there,” he in-sists.

November has been investigating fraudfor about eight years and relies on his ex-tensive experience when working on thesecases.

He elaborates on the growing concern offraudulent rental activities: “The manwho was sentenced last month advertisedon the internet, property to be rented out.The scamster was acting as a rental agentand received huge amounts of money fromprospective tenants.”

Those who were interested in rentingwere first told they were approved andthen asked to transfer a deposit into thescamster’s account.

“When they arrived at the property tomove in there were already someone li-ving there,” says November.

In some of the cases that have been re-ported to November prospective renterseven viewed a flat before hand.

Thus, seeing the property does not suffi-ce for proof.

November says the only way to know ifa rental agent is legitimate is to do someresearch before depositing any money.

“I know sometimes people are desperateto find a place to stay and don’t often thinkabout these things, but one must do a tho-rough check. Phone references, go to therental offices if they have one, or do someresearch on the internet,” he advises.

November says that if anyone is suspici-ous about a rental agent they should con-tact him at Table View police and then hewill give them the go-ahead or not.

Luna Paige’s newest release is breakingdown traditional recording boundaries.The singer songwriter has just relea-

sed her fifth album, Borders and Beyond,which marks five years since her last En-glish release, her third album,Wonderful li-fe.Luna says after her third album she wan-

ted to do something in Afrikaans, which shedid with Storielied, which also became a liveDVD.“Obviously in the meantime I wrote quite

a few English songs,” she says, “so if you’vewritten them you have to record them.”Celebrated musician and producer,

Schalk Joubert produced the album and heapproached the recording in a rather inte-resting way.Borders and Beyond was mostly recorded

at his home on a farm outside Stellenbosch.Sound engineer David Langemann came inand put up scaffolding and sound boards andplaced mics while they were rehearsing.“The albumwas recorded so quickly Luna

didn’t even realise it,” Schalk says, jokinglyadding, “She said she felt cheated.”

Surprise recordingDavid worked while they were rehearsing

and the album took only two days to record.They spent another two days polishing andadding final touches and, just like that, theyhad an album.Schalk played the finished product to his

said it sounded like a big production fromNashville. “It was one of those surprise re-cordings,” Schalk says.“We wanted to keep it organic and real,

and the musicians were excellent,” he says.The album features Kevin Gibson on

drums, Henry Steel on guitar and Schalk onbass.They started out wanting a garage-soun-

ding album, but Schalk says the musiciansthey worked with were just too good.“It sounds like a million bucks,” says

Schalk. “Whenyouhaveanartist thatwritesreally good songs and you rehearse themwith a good band, then the whole process isreally easy.”Luna tells how Schalk and Kevin set up in

the lounge, the guitar amps were in the be-droombehind a closed doorwhileHenry andLuna sat in the passageway while they wererecording.They happened to be right in front of Si-

mon Orange’s room, and he ended up alsoplaying on the album in his “tea break”.Violinist Piet de Beer, who plays for the

Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and cellistAnjulie Nock also added touches to Bordersand Beyond.Peter Mitchell, and regular collaborator

Gerald Clark, and Idols star Andriëtte Nor-man also lent their voices to the album.

Novel musicOn “One Day”, the song Luna wrote for

her show with Gerald, Lovemore, Luna usesthe concept behindherStorielied album, tur-ning novels into songs, putting the acclai-med David Nicholls novel with the same na-me to music.The title track for the album sounds like

a love song, but Luna says it has a slight poli-tical angle, albeit “obtuse”, as Schalk pointsout. This, together with the fact that a lot ofthe songs were written while Luna was tra-velling and that some of them deal with thespaces between people, made Borders andBeyond a natural choice for an album name.Schalk says the name sees Luna emanci-

pating herself from traditional borders,which is exactlywhat she didwith the recor-ding of the album.SAMA-award winning Dave spent years

in Nashville and when Schalk and Luna pla-yed the songs to him he immediately under-stood where they wanted to go with thesound. The result is an honest album with“organic performances executed in a slickway”.The album is a true reflection of Luna’s li-

ve performance, which fans can see in CapeTown this week. She will be at Mercury inthe CBD on Thursday night and at Klein Li-bertas Theatre in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

dojos we are going to perform well and sur-prise a few countries in December when wecompete in the Kyokushin World Union ju-nior tournament in Moscow,” said Bosman.
