“(My kind) se ‘kêrel’ is 25. Hy’s ’n 28’s-ben- delid.

Lorraine Sebatu is baie bekommerd oor haar kind wat glo by bendesbetrokke is.

Weet jy, my sussie, ek is so

Hy kanmet rede trots wees.

Dalk is

Omdat ekongeletterd is.

dít is virhulle baie indrukwekkendomtrentdié juffrou. Daar is groot

ring.

Die beeldmateriaal was meer as goud

Kuils River Hospital recently becameAfrica’s first and only accredited ad-vanced heart care facility.

This accolade was bestowed on the hospi-tal by the international Adult CongenitalHeart Association (ACHA).

Thehospital’s secret heartweapon?WhenDr Lou Hofmeyr, an adult congenital andstructural heart disease cardiologist fromMilnerton, joined the hospital’s state-of-theart cardiac unit, the SA Endovascular Prac-tice.

“This afforded the NKRH the accredita-tion,” said Karen Eagle, the hospital’sspokeswoman.

AdvancedThe distinction between any other hospi-

tal’s cardiac unit and the one now function-al in Kuils River, is that fact that they offeradvanced cardiology.

And it was Hofmeyr’s completion of an 18month fellowship in 2012 thatmeant thehos-pitalmet all the criteria to obtain theaccred-itation which made it the only one on thecontinent to be honoured thus.

“NKRH is the only facility in Africa to of-fer advanced cardiology recommended bythe ACHA,” Hofmeyr said.

He explained that a number of require-ments had to be met to become Africa’s lead-er in ACHD. These included having an ex-tended medical staff including surgeons, in-tensive care specialists, imaging andanaesthetic backup, as well as nursing staff, high care and ICU facilities, and lastly anACHD and structural heart and interven-tional cardiologist, such as himself.

“A multi-specialised group of practition-ers allowing the practice to perform com-prehensive medical and interventional car-diological services,” he said.

LeadersHofmeyr was clear about what his team

wished to achieve.“In time, we aim to become the leading

cardiac facility in the country, withpatientstravelling from far to be treated by this teamof medical experts,” he said.

Ever heard of a baby born with a “hole inthe heart”? This is what Hofmeyr’s job is allabout. He explains.

“Congenital heart disease is a type ofbirth defect in one or more structures of theheart or blood vessels that occur before

birth.“The most common congenital heart dis-

orders affecting adults include abnormali-ties of the valves and vessels of the heartwall that develop with wear and tear on theheart, or through other disease processes,”he said.

Impressive“The most common type of congenital

heart disease include abnormal connec-tions between the right and left sides of theheart, such as holes in the walls or obstruc-tions in the normal pathways exiting theheart.”

Because of its super heart team, the hospi-tal boasts an impressive number of cardiactreatments. These include coronary arterydisease, adult congenital heart disease, pe-ripheral vascular disease, structural heartdisease and valvular heart disease,Hofmeyr said.

“Advanced cardiology is offered to not on-ly adults but teenagers and young adultswith complex heart disease at NKRH. Edu-cation to people with congenital heart dis-ease is essential and is available in order toprolong and improve quality of life,”Hofmeyr said.

He explained that Coronary Artery Dis-ease is the most common type of heart dis-ease. It is one of the leading causes of deathin South Africa.

“Lifestyle changes lowering your risk tothis include: stop smoking, control diabetes, control blood pressure, be physically active, eat a low-saturated-fat and low-cholesteroldiet.”V Further enquiries can be made to the SA Endovascular practice at 021 900 6090 or to Karen Eagle,Netcare Kuils River Hospital’s Marketing and PublicRelations Officer at 021 900 6000.

If you reach 60, you’re very blessed, by any-one’s standard. If you reach 60 without aheart disease, you’re very, very lucky, itseems, according to alarming new statis-tics.These statistics, published during Sep-

tember (National Heart AwarenessMonth),have shown that a quarter of all South Afri-can women and a third of its men will haveheart disease by 60.“As South Africa’s population becomes

increasinglyurbanisedand less active, seri-ous heart conditions are on the rise andreaching ‘alarming proportions’,” accord-ing to DrAnchen Laubscher, medical direc-tor of the Netcare Hospital Division.“This avoidable health crisiswill increas-

ingly strain our healthcare system unlessindividuals take ownership of their healthand lifestyle choices,” she said.“Cardiovascular risk factors such as hy-

pertension, high cholesterol levels, diabetesand obesity have increased dramatically,”Laubscher said.

RisksDr Laubscher adds that being over-

weight, having high blood pressure and un-controlled high blood sugar levels or highcholesterol, all put us at risk of heart dis-ease.“Most people are unaware that they are

developing cardiovascular disease. Duringthe early stages, complications of risk fac-tors such as diabetes, high cholesterol andhigh blood pressure develop without anywarning. This is why high blood pressureis known as the ‘silent killer’,” she said.Because there may be no indications that

we are developing heart disease, we shoulddiscuss our risk factors with our doctor, particularly if there is a history of heart dis-ease or any of the aforementioned risk fac-tors in the family.According to Laubscher, we should have

our blood pressure checked at least annual-ly if the results of a test are within normallimits, or more often if the results are bor-derline or high. “When a condition such ashigh blood pressure is detected early, time-ous and effective treatment can reverse theprogression of heart disease and make aworld of difference to the health of the per-son involved,” she says.

DangerousAnother common disease that can affect

the heart and cardiovascular system is co-ronary heart disease (CHD).“This is potentially a very dangerous me-

dical condition as it can place a great dealof strain on the heart. A heart attack willresult if an artery is blocked by the fatty de-posits. Somepeoplehaveagenetic predispo-sition to atherosclerosis and an unhealthylifestyle increases the risk,” Laubschersaid.Heart disease often develops in people

who smoke, eat foods high in saturated fats, have high stress levels and get little exerci-se. These are modifiable risk factors whichcan be addressed by improving your lifesty-le. Not only will this benefit your heart, butwill benefit your health in general.V For more information, contact Martina Nicholson,Graeme Swinney or Sarah Beswick at 011 469 3016or at [email protected], [email protected] [email protected].

Australian alternative band, Dead LetterCircus, is heading to South Africa this week.

They will be performing in Cape Town to-morrow night with The Narrow, Mark Hazeand Deity’s Muse as support acts.TygerBurger spoke to bassist for Dead Let-

ter Circus, Stewart Hill, about the band’ssound, their South African tour and issuesthat are close to their hearts.

“Compared with our debut album, This isthe warning, The catalyst fire brings morespace while still maintaining intensity,”Stewart says of the band’s latest album, which was released in August.

“We’ve channelled a heavier vibe mostdefinitely caused by touring with heavierbands through the US. I believe it’s a stepforward for us and hope that everyone en-joys it as much as we enjoy playing it.”

The band has toured extensively, and hasplayed big stadium shows as support acts forMuse and Linkin Park.

“We have a very broad range of influences

from electronic to metal to pop,” Stewartsays, adding: “If it sounds good we like it.”

With a CV that boasts international radioand television appearances, headlining in-ternational festivals, being voted as one ofRed Bull’s Top 11 Rock Acts and beingranked in Total Guitar UK’s Best Guitar Al-bums of the Year, Dead Letter Circus surelyhave a long list of career highlights.

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

my kinders.

“Gelukkig was ek slim genoeg om my dood-genootskap drie maande vooruit te betaal.”

Dís hoekom die Assem-blies of God-kerk se gemeenskapsen-trum in Kalkfontein ’n spesialebroodhulp-projek wil begin.Charmaine Logenstein, bestuur-

Bruin meel of wit.Die behoefte is groot.TygerBurger het dié behoefte

eerstehands ervaar.

Depression is not about “just feelinglow”, and will not disappear by “justpulling yourself together”. It is a medicalcondition, and as with other biologicalillnesses, it requires treatment andmedication. For various reasons, it is stillan illness which is not spoken aboutopenly in society.Thursday 10 October is the World

Health Organisation’s Mental HealthAwareness Day, and on the closestSunday, 13 October, YOU, DRUM andHuisgenoot together with M-Net will“hike for hope”. As is the case with otherillnesses, early recognition of symptomsand the necessary treatment can increasea depression sufferer’s general quality oflife. Much more: it can save lives, as theterminal, fatal consequence of thisbiological disease, suicide, is an evenbigger taboo. You can either enter for the5 km walkathon or the 10 km walkathonin the beautiful vineyards of the D’AriaWine Estate, Durbanville. The entry fee is R50 (5 km) and R75

(10 km) and R30 for children (bothroutes). The entrance fee goes to thedepression research fund of the IthembaFoundation.V To enter, go to http://www.iqelaevents.co.zaand click on the Hope Hike logo. Entries limited.

Skaflike seisoenvir Kuile, G’wood

TRUST: WILL PROVIDE BURSARIES

A gap forrugby talentThe Western Province Rugby Football

Union has unveiled a new initiativeto provide much-needed educational

support to young rugby hopefuls in theprovince.

The Western Province Rugby Presi-dent’s Trust, launched at DHL Newlandson Tuesday 17 September, will providebursaries, as well as rugby training anddevelopment to gifted young players whocan’t afford primary, secondary or tertiaryschooling.

The brainchild of previous president,Tobie Titus, the trust has now come to lifeand is set to change the lives of many chil-dren who are eager to pursue a career inprofessional rugby.

Unifying“There is no doubt that sport, and partic-

ularly rugby, is a unifying force; one thatcan bring together the communities acrossthe Western Cape,” comments TheloWakefield, current president of the unionand of the trust.

“However, there are so many talentedyoung players that, while they have a natu-ral aptitude for rugby, are unable to realisetheir full potential since they don’t haveaccess to funds for schooling. The trustaims to give an opportunity to these play-ers, giving them a well-rounded approachto their career.”

“Being a successful rugby player isabout more than just playing rugby,” com-ments Scarra Ntubeni, DHL Stormers andDHL WP player and speaker at the launch.

“It’s about having an educational frame-work – understanding the business of rugbyand how to build a career once your profes-sional rugby days are over. The trust is a keyintervention, since it allows potential playersto acquire this knowledge to be successful.”

These bursaries and development opportu-nities are open to any young rugby player be-tween the ages of six and 21.
