Factory workers and business owners inthe Blackheath industrial area mightsoon be driving on better roads, impro-

ving their skill sets, or making use of a newand improved taxi rank.

These are just few of the suggestions putforward by roleplayers within the Black-heath City Improvement District (CID) re-cently in an initial report on plans to upgra-de and improve the light industrial area.

The report forms part of the City of CapeTown department of economic develop-ment’s Blackheath Business Retention and

Expansion Programme (BR&E).The programme seeks to improve indus-

trial areas across the city with the help ofthe business and factory owners. The pro-gramme is also initiated in Retreat, Philippiand Bellville, said programme coordinatorGerswhin Gouldien when addressing a sub-council meeting last week.

Key findingsThe report outlines key findings and re-

commendations which include improvingbusiness leadership in the area, upgradingimportant infrastructure, making informa-tion about skills development initiativesmore widely available, synchronising sup-

ply chain management process amongst bu-siness, as well as protecting the industrialcharacter of the area.

Gouldien said department officials went“door to door” to canvas businesses.

He told councillors the Blackheath indus-trial area is ideally located and provides jobopportunities to people from across subcou-cil 21.

Following several meetings with roleplay-ers and site visits, the plans have beendrawn up and now need implementation,Gouldien said.

He said the department and CID want tolook at how and where the subcouncil canassist in expanding business in the area.

“As we know, it is very difficult to attractbusinesses thesedays. That iswhyweratherwant to try and support the existing busi-ness in the area,” Gouldien said.

The CID, he said, indicated infrastructurerequirements such as upgrading Range Ro-ad – a main route.

Implementation“We are also looking at why we cannot ha-

ve a proper taxi rank in the area.”He saidwith the aid of the local subcouncil

these issues can be dealt with easily, alt-hough implementation would be over a peri-od of years.

Vir ’n trotse ouma van Wesbank is diebeeld van dié woonbuurt waarvoor sysó lief is, uiters belangrik.

Cornelia “Corrie” Pienaar van Wydgeleë-straat in Wesbank is passievol oor dié buurtte midde van die heersende bendegeweldwat daagliks daar hoogty vier.

Corrie (58), ’n gemeenskapswerker, werkbedags as straatveër en meld namiddae aanby die kantore van die plaaslike kliniek,waar sy danksy haar groen vingers as tui-nier inval en werk. Sy werk vrywillig ensukkel soms om kos op die tafel te sit, maardie beeld en omgewing in haar gemeenskapis wat haar dryf, vertel sy.

Corrie (58) werk al sewe maande lank bydie kliniek, waar daar sooi gespit word, tuinnatgemaak en plante geplant word.

Die meeste van die plante hier word ge-skenk deur inwoners in die gebied, vertelsy. “Die plek was eers baie verniel en ver-waarloos. Die mense kom van ander plekkehierheen, dan lyk die plek so nevermind.Baie van die mense hier voel nou egter goedoor die tuin,” sê Corrie met ’n breë glimlagop haar gesig.

Die tuin by die kliniek het vir ’n lank rukagteruitgegaan voordat dié plantliefhebberingegryp het.

“Ek doen dit uit liefde vir die plek. Ek vatdit só, ons almal woon tog hier. Mense komhierheen en as dit sleg lyk, kry ons buurt’n slegte naam.

Daarom kom maak sy elke dag die tuinnat en vee sy gereeld die voorportaal van diekliniek.

“Ek spuit die plante nat sodat die blomme-tjies kan spruit en mense kan sien dis mooien netjies,” vertel sy.

Corrie is tans al tuinier en skoonmakerby die kliniek. “Ek is mos nie een wat moegraak nie. Ek is maar lief vir die buitelewe.Ek hou daarvan om iets te doen waaropmense kan trots wees.”

Corrie, haar kind en kleinkind, woon alvyf jaar in Wesbank.

“Ek gee om vir die community en die men-

se rondom my,” sê sy.Corrie, wat ook ’n pragtige tuin by haar

huis in stand hou en selfs vir haar plantename gee, versoek dat mense wat kan help,haar ondersteun en plante skenk.

“Ek soek veral asters en jakobregops virdie wintermaande... vygies ook,” sê sy.

Sy makeer ook tuingereedskap om haarwerk behoorlik te kan doen, sê sy.

Sy voeg by: “Plante soek ook net liefde en’n bietjie aandag.”

Ward councillor Bert van Dalen said hewelcomed the department’s programmeand the plans.

“We want to thank the department fordoing this. There is a lot of work that wentinto compiling the report and a lot of role-players had their fingers in the pie,” he ad-ded.

Majidie Abrahams, ANC PR councillor,said while the council generally welcomesand support such initiatives to improve jobcreation, one also needs to determine whatthe costs involved will be.

“The business plans have been compiled,

but what is the financial implications forthe council,” he asked.

Gouldien said the actual costs have not

yet been finalised.A follow-up meeting is scheduled to take

place later this month.

Ouers trotseer koue in lang toue

Members of the Kuils River police clustermanaged to make several arrests and confi-cated thousandsof randsworthof drugs lastweek.Police spokesperson Captain Isaac van

Niekerk said 753 arrests were made.The Kuils River cluster consists of the

Kuils River, Mfuleni, Kleinvlei, Belhar,Delft, Elsies River and Ravensmead policestations.Van Niekerk said 85 houses were sear-

ched for drugs, which resulted in 150 ar-rests.Close to 140 litres of alcohol were confis-

cated, Van Niekerk said.He added that mandrax tablets worth

R8 500 and tik worth R3 800 was also confis-cated.Thepolice alsomanaged to confiscatedagga to the value of R56 456.“A total of 588 suspects were arrested for

charges relating tomurder, attemptedmur-der, assault with the intent to do grievous

bodily harm, and drunk driving.“Some were arrested for reckless and ne-

gligent driving, the possession of dange-rous weapons, and malicious damage toproperty.”Arrests relating to charges of house rob-

bery, child neglect and sexual assault werealso made.He said 165 suspectwere released after be-

ing charged with being drunk in public andriotous behaviour.

Burglaries leave Bardale residents fearfulRICHARD ROBERTS

Recent burglaries have left residents livingin the Bardale Village Phase 1 security com-plex in Silversands fearing for their safety.

In one incident, home owner Darryl Dryerand his wife were asleep when two thievesbroke into their duplex.

The incident happened on Friday, 17 Aprilat about 01:45, Dryer said.

He told TygerBurger his wife first hearda noise emanating from the bathroom andwoke him up.

“She heard a noise which sounded like thetoilet door closing. She then saw the doorhandle go down,” Dryer explained.

He said he noticed the silhouette of a per-

son on one of the walls.He saw one of the burglars on the veranda

near his window and heard one fiddling in-side the bathroom.

Dryer got up and said his movement mighthave disturbed the burglars from continu-ing with their plans.

“When I looked out of my window I sawsomeone running down the road.”

Dryer said he suspects the alleged intrud-ers live in the complex.

“This is not someone who jumped overelectrical fencing,” he added.

The thieves only managed to escape withsome perfume, Dryer said.

He reported the matter to the security onduty.

Fellow resident Francois Barnies said he

also lost some of his valuables after hishouse was burgled.

When he returned home on Monday aweek ago he noticed something was not inplace. “When my wife entered the house shesaw that the kitchen cupboard doors wereopen and that the main bedroom had beenransacked. The thieves entered through thewindow.”

Both of the couple’s rings were stolen,along with a laptop, DVD player and someclothing.

Barnies told TygerBurger four otherhomes in the complex had also been brokeninto over the past few weeks.

The incident at his house, he says, was re-ported to the security, Mfuleni police andthe property managers.

According to Barnies, the electric fencesurrounding the complex is out of order. Hewas also informed that the CCTV camerasare no longer operating.

“More security personnel need to be em-ployed.

“They are too few for such a big complex,”he claims.

He said he fears the criminals may return.Bardale Village Phase 1, according to its

developers, is known as the Vanilla StreetHomeowners’ Association (VSHOA).

The managing agent of the phase is Inte-grated Housing Facilities Management.

Michael Bauer, portfolio manager for theVSHOA, was approached for comment lastweek but did not respond at the time of goingto print.

resource at its disposal to prevent

doel van die uitstalling is ook om die landse erfenis te bewaar.

Iets wat dié oud-soldaat veral na aan diehart lê, is die betrokkenheid van Boesmansin die Caprivi, Botswana en Zambië.

The City of Cape Town has reminded resi-dents to consider logging faults and reques-ting services on its mobile (mobi) site.“We constantly strive to find innovative

ways to improve service levels thatwill saveresidents time and money. We live in a digi-tal erawhere smart phones andothermobiledevices aremore easily accessible to a largersector of our population,” says coporate ser-vices mayco member Xanthea Limberg.“The mobi site, a web page designed for

mobile devices, is onemore option availableto access City services,” said Limberg.The mobi site uptake has been slow, but

the City hopes more residents will use it.Of the more than 20 000 service requests

created via the eServices portal from 1April2014 to 31March this year, just over 400werevia the mobi site. The top three services re-quested related to streets lights not working(30 requests), illegal structures erected (27requests) and blocked or overflowing sewersystems (24 requests).Residents can use the mobi site to report

faults such as potholes, water leaks, electri-city failures and illegal dumping amongother service requests.The mobi site can be accessed at: http://

www.capetown.gov.za/mobi. Users shouldselect the “Service Requests” tab and go to“Create new service request”. Once a re-quest has been chosen under the “Group”

“Sound administration remains thecornerstone to the developmentand future of sport”.

This was the message to guests at the an-nual Cape Town Sport Forum Awards even-ing delivered by executive director of theCity of Cape Town’s sport and recreation de-partment, Gert Bam.

The annual event was held on Friday 24April in the City’s banqueting hall.

Bam, a former prominent member of thenon-racial sport movement and a top schoolsports official said: “I come from the tren-ches of sport and the sport struggle in thiscountry. I fully understand sport adminis-tration.”

Sports struggle“I can tell you during the sport struggle

The FMS was named FMC (FacilitiesManagement Committee) of the year whilethe Rygate LFA received an award for host-ing the best sports development project.

The LFA stages one of the biggest agegroup football tournaments for juniors inthe under-7 and under-9 age groups in theWestern Cape.

Knock outOne of the LFA’s top clubs, Silver Spurs’

club coach Victor Tajoodien was also namedcoach of the year. Last year he was at thehelm when Spurs won Safa Cape Town’sprestigious Coke Cup Championship. Spursthen also annexed the Rygate LFA’s knockout cup and ended second on the PremierLeague while its under-17 side won theleague and knockout double.

Other awards announced were: Adminis-trator of the year to Alec du Sani; Recreationprogramme of the year to StrandfonteinFMC; Sportswoman with a disability to Tou-feeqa Davids; Sportsman with disability toAnthony George; Junior Sportsman of theyear to Mujahid Toffar; and Sportswoman ofthe year to Chanelle Gewers

South African Richard Murray (Durbanvil-le) put his heart into getting a podium finishat Sunday’s Discovery World Triathlon CapeTown.

But Murray finished fourth in the end af-ter being passed by Vincent Luis in the finalkilometer of the 10km run. Olympic champi-on Alistair Brownlee won in his first raceafter returning from injury and Spain’s Ja-vier Gomez, the current World champion, fi-nished second. It was Frenchman VincentLuis who passed Murray in the final stretch.It was a bittersweet finish for Murray asfourth place was one place better than lastyear, but the athlete from Durbanville des-perately wanted to finish on the podium infront of a 1 000-strong home crowd at theGreen Point Athletics Stadium.

“It was a spectacular race. I’m a bit upsetthat I couldn’t manage a place on the podi-um, but it is one place better than last yearand I gave it my all. I was on the rivet duringthe running leg and I just couldn’t followwhen Javier and Alistair went for it near theend. I tried to keep my third place. I stillwant to finish on the podium in front of myhome crowd so badly,” said Murray.

“I am grateful for everybody who came outto support us today. I had kids runningalongside me on the route screaming my na-me and that was very special. Big up to Ja-vier, Alistair and Vincent for getting the po-dium places today. I‘m very happy to see allthe people coming out to support us. Thesport is growing and that is so important aswell.”

The University of the Western Cape(UWC) romped to yet another VarsityBeach Volleyball title when they beat

Tuks 44-25 in the final on Thursday.UWC finished the tournament unbeaten

on their home turf, claiming their third tit-le on the bounce.

Led by veteran captain Bejancke Della,who was named Steers Most ValuablePlayer of the Tournament, UWC were do-minant throughout the tournament.

After crushing the University of Limpo-po 40-27 in the semi-final, UWC strolled toa big win over Tuks in the final.

The defending champions took thematch by the scruff off the neck from thestart, but Tuks never gave up and continu-ed to pounce, managing to take the deficitto just three points during the first half.

Tuks rallied to stay in contention, butUWC’s experience soon became apparentas they cruised to a 23-14 lead at half-time.After the break, the hosts took full controland raced to a commanding position of 35-20 with just five minutes remaining.

The result was soon put to bed as UWCturned the screws even tighter and exten-ded their lead by 19 points with one minuteto go. The crowd counted down the final10 seconds of the match as UWC claimedthe match 44-25 to be crowned championsof 2015.

Tuks finished runners-up while VaalUniversity of Technology took third placeafter beating the University of Limpopo47-26 in the third place play off.

UCT and newcomers Kovsies ended fifthand sixth respectively, with UCT takingone win from five and Kovsies taking thewooden spoon, finishing without a singlepoint.

Udubs thebest onthe beach

Female footballerscompete at UdubsThirty-two teams from all over the WesternCape will compete in the Phoenix Spurs Foot-ball Club’s annual community female footballtournament on Friday and Saturday.

The University of the Western Cape sportgrounds in Robert Sebukwe Road will host thetournament.

This tournament is a major stepping stonefor all female football players and the holisticdevelopment of women in South Africa andwill be a bench-mark event for all partici-pants.
