GIFTS In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most. Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Forty-nine years ago Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council with these challenging words: “Our duty is not just to guard this treasure, as though it were some museum piece and we the curators, but . . . what is needed at the present time is a new enthusiasm, a new joy and serenity of mind.” As the participants in Vatican II proceeded with their deliberations, the first docu-ment they produced was the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, for they knew that it is from the liturgical life of the Church that everything else we do pro-ceeds. This seminal document, arrived at after much debate and approved vir-tually unanimously, set the tone for the entire Council to follow. It also set in motion the liturgical reforms that we are still implementing today. Perhaps no single phrase of the entire Vatican Council has had more influence on the life of the Church over the last half-century as the Constitution on the Liturgy’s ringing declaration that “full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else.” —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray

Teacher of the Month

Sacred Heart Teacher Transitional Kindergarten Teacher, Lynn Strange was selected as Teacher of the month by mbaykids.com. The publication, Mbaykids.com included this article about Mrs. Strange, submitted by Jonabel Perez, in their monthly magazine.

“Mrs. Lynn Strange has all the qualities of a great teacher for younger children. She is very patient, very approachable and al-ways encourages children to ask questions and use their imagina-tion. She has a special touch to younger kids, particularly the Transitional Kinder group. I often see kids who have a hard time in the morning saying goodbye to their parents but as soon as she holds them, they calm down.

When my son, Francis learned that he will be going to school, at first he was not very excited about it. But after he met Mrs. Strange on the day before the first day of school, he got so excited to go to school on the first day of school and see his teacher again and meet new friends.

I've known Mrs. Strange since 2008, when she was still helping in the Extension program. My older kids loved her and she was always very friendly to all the parents. When she started teaching the Transi-tional Kinder (TK), I have heard positive remarks from fellow parents and all of them were so thankful for having Mrs. Strange teach TK. I have two other older children who did not need Transitional Kinder program but I am so thankful to Sacred Heart School for having this program and Mrs. Strange teach my little Francis. Mrs. Strange deserves to win a Teaching award because of her outstanding commitment to her vocation as a teacher and her care and love for students. She is just like a second mom to our children.”

CAMELS AND NEEDLES Boston College professors recently studied “super-rich” Americans (worth $25 million or more). Surprisingly, wealth affects every aspect of their lives, and often negatively. Marriage and friendship can be dif-ficult (“Do they love me or love my money?”). Rich parents worry that their children will fritter away their lives. Jesus challenged the rich young man in today’s Gospel to free himself of the burden of wealth that was keeping him from the fullest possible life with God. Wealth is not evil as long as we do not let it own us. Wealth, in the form of skills, time, or money, is not an end but a means: a means to create a home; raise children; provide hospitality; to give time, attention, love, charity, and money; and to share with church and community for the well-being of all. Jesus promises that the one who gives up any possessions for his sake will be saved. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Year of Faith—Open the doors to Christ My dear brothers and sisters, As October 11th approaches, we are eager to begin our Year of Faith, a sacred time our Holy Father Pope Bene-dict XVI has set aside for us to reinvigorate our faith. October 11th remembers the 50th anniversary opening of the Second Vatican Council in October 1962. At that time, Pope John XXIII asked us to open the windows of the church – a Spirit of Renewal aggiornamento. And now our present Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI is ask-ing us to open the doors of our Diocese, Parishes, Institu-tions, homes and hearts to the Year of Faith. We are asked to go deeper into the life giving well of living water to draw our spiritual water to quench our thirst and the thirst of others for Christ. Thus, I urge you to use all of the means our diocese and the United States Conference of Bishops and the Vatican will offer to experience and to live fully our special time with God and one another. May God bless us all, Bishop Richard J. Garcia, D.D.

CHANGE IN YOUR COLLECTION ENVELOPES: In an effort to reduce the number of second collec-tions taken at Mass, the 5th Sunday Stewardship Outreach collection has been dropped (the September packet had already been mailed with the envelope). The parish will still continue to support worthy charitable causes using the monies taken up during the Thursday and Friday Masses which get deposited into our Charities fund.

Family Faith Formation

October is the month of the Rosary. Children in the Family Faith Formation Program will learn to recite the prayers of the Rosary this month.

Why do Catholics pray the Rosary? In the early Church, monks led services with a Latin recitation of the Psalms called, “The Psalter.” But most people couldn’t read or write Latin, so the “Our Father” prayer was substituted so that people

could easily pray together. Tradition holds that St. Dominic combined the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers with meditations on the mysteries of our faith into the rosary we know today. So the rosary makes it easy for us to pray together and to focus on Jesus’ life and glory. “Taken from Partners in Faith.”

Other Happenings in our Program We are collecting cans of food for our food drive. All cans may be dropped in bins by the sign-in table in the Parish Hall. 10/27 and 10/31 children may wear their costumes to class.
