Stewardship: Next Week’s Second Collection for World Mission Sunday We are called to be part of the Church’s missionary efforts, supporting mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who provide loving service to those most in need. As Catholics around the world — here at home and in the Missions — gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, let us… pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work and offer financial help through The Society for the Propagation of the Faith for vulnerable communities throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

"For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." Mark 10:27 I like golf; I like to watch it and have recently begun taking lessons. I like the challenge of a course – spread out before me with infinite possibilities of birdies and eagles awaiting me. Though I love our Lord above all things and have dedicated my life to service in His name, the scripture quote above does not reflect the reality of my golf game. Sadly, I will not be the next Tiger Woods. In today’s Gospel, Christ once again patiently teaches the true meaning of

His salvation to the disciples. Worldly goods, so often associated with God’s favor during Jesus’ time, will not gain you access to heaven. Yet it isn’t the possessions themselves which hinder our spiritual journey, but what they represent: a reliance on things instead of God. The rich man is challenged not by his wealth, but by the pride and ego which can separate him from recognizing that all our blessings come from God. The skills and talents we possess are gifts, just as salvation itself a gift from God. In the end, what Jesus wants from his disciples, and from us, is trust … faith. It is not a blind faith where everything works out like the conclusion of a 1950s family comedy, but a realization that God has set a path for us and it is a path which may at times be rocky, but one on which He travels with us. This path may lead us to conquer an illness, or a fear, or even that math test. It may lead us out of our comfort zone to find our truest self. It may remind us that all too often we look for the lesser of two evils or the easy way out when all along we should be looking for God. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “[f]aith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” If you’re reading this, you’ve taken that first step. Continue upwards then towards God. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our St. Lucy Food Truck. Final numbers are not yet in, but so far over 6,000 pounds of food was collected! I would also like to thank you for your generous support of our sisters and brothers affected by Hurricane Florence; $5,535 was donated to assist them during this difficult time. You are a blessing to so many.

~Fr. Posey

Support the Race for Seminarians St. James’ own Jean Gliot, joined by Fr. Edward Horkan, Pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Luray, Virginia; Fr. Brian Bashista, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Lake Ridge; four seminarians, and forty other individuals are running in the Marine Corps Marathon or 10K on October 28, as a part of the Race for Seminarians. If you wish to sponsor Jean, a priest, or any of the other

runners, you can make a donation to the Diocese of Arlington/Race for Seminarians by check or online at https://bit.ly/2xMExkU . Checks can be sent to: Catholic Diocese of Arlington Race for Seminarians P.O. Box 1960 Merrifield, VA 22116-1960. Thank you for your support!

Annual Mass of Remembrance—November 2 St. James will celebrate our annual Mass of Remembrance at Noon on Friday, November 2. This Mass remembers all those who have gone before us and who we hope to see again. Email the Rectory Office at [email protected] if you would like to arrange a candle to be placed at the altar in memory of your deceased loved one. Please note, that as the Mass falls on a First Friday, Eucharistic Adoration will end at 10:00am to allow us to prepare for the Mass of Remembrance.

Engaging Sacred Scripture Series—Next Session October 16 Father Steven Oetjen is leading a four part series: “Engaging Sacred Scripture,” on Tuesday evenings during the month of October (except October 23), from 7:00pm to 8:15pm in Knecht Conference Room (Doors 8 & 9). The program is aimed at helping you get more out of your study of Scripture, and at helping you gain a deeper understanding of Scripture study. For more information on the program, please visit: https://bit.ly/2QDVWFm or contact Father Oetjen at [email protected].

Year-End Giving Opportunities

Tax Savings Through a Gift of Stock

Consider a gift of stock as a donation to our parish. In exchange for a gift of long-term, appreciated

securities (stock), you can receive an income tax deduction and avoid capital gains taxes on stock appreciation. For more information, please call (703) 841- 3896 or visit: www.arlingtondiocese.org/giving/gifts_stock.aspx

Make a Gift through a Tax-Free IRA Gift

Why is this important? This provision allows individuals age 70½ or older to make tax-free gifts from an IRA directly to a parish, school or the Diocese. To complete an IRA Charitable Rollover for 2018 please contact your IRA provider for exact instructions. Such gifts usually take a few weeks to transact.

Pro-Life Ministry Update The fall 40 Days for Life campaign (www.40daysforlife.com) is underway. Our local parishes kicked off with a vigil; remarks were provided by Fr. Vu and the former director of A Woman’s Choice (provides support and resources to families facing a crisis pregnancy). For 40 days and nights, people of faith and conscience will stand in constant, peaceful vigil outside hundreds of abortion facilities to do the single most important thing we can do: PRAY. So far during this campaign, 53 lives have been saved, 2 abortion employees have quit and 2 abortion facilities have closed. The rosary will be prayed each first Saturday at 10:30am at the Falls Church abortion facility: 900 S. Washington Street, Falls Church, VA 22046. The St. James Pro-Life Committee meets for action planning on first Thursday of each month at 7:30pm in the Knecht Conference Room. At week 32, a preborn weighs about 5 pounds and is about 18 inches long. The baby’s bones are now hardening.
