and helped with the first two evenings with Hill
Top United Methodist Church and the children in
Allentown, Mt. Oliver and Beltzhoover. Together
we fed more than 40 children dinner. Our volun-
teers led bingo, helped with crafts and enjoyed the
activities. We have 8 more Wednesdays to go. If
you have time and enjoy spending time among the
children consider volunteering one or more weeks.

Music “Notes” with Amanda:
Psalm FAQ’s (Part II)
Last week we started the conversation of psalms. We
asked, “Why are the psalms sung?” and “why does the can-
tor sing the song from the ambo?” Today we will define a
very important term in sacred music: the “psalm setting”.
As I explained last week, the psalm is sung at Mass during
our weekend liturgies, but each one sounds different from
week to week. Music composers take a psalm text (psalm
103, for example) and compose a melody for it. Often-
times they will take a portion of the text and define it as
the “refrain”, i.e. the portion of the music that the congre-
gation sings. The verses, however, are usually sung by the
cantor alone.
The process of matching a melody to a psalm is called
“composing a ‘psalm setting’”. A “psalm setting” is a musi-
cal version of a psalm text. Psalm settings have various
styles (which we will explore in the coming weeks!), but
the majority of our psalm settings are written for piano,
voice, guitar and optional woodwind accompaniment.
These psalm settings are great because 1) they are, often-
times, located in our hymnal so you can follow along; 2)
they use various instruments, thus allowing for plenty of
participation in the liturgy in various ways; and 3) they are
familiar to many Catholics, allowing for optimum partici-
pation for parishioners and visitors to our parish.
Next week we will explore the various styles of psalm
settings and why we choose the styles we do here on the
Mount!

Continuing review of Take Ten
As you may recall, a few weeks ago, we had a Take Ten
Continued Conversation Gathering. The Plan Needs a
People Experienced in Parish Community. We
would like to share some of the personal responses to our
last question of the series.
Question 3: Name the hopes you have as parish-
ioner in meeting the challenges of bringing the
gospel to this time and place!
•Help us to understand what a personal relationship in Christ is.
Once that happens, we can radiate the light, to others in the par-
ish and then beyond.
•My hope is that no person will ever feel unwelcome. That in mer-
gers, we as a parish can literally open our arms to everyone and be
the part of the body that everyone says “I feel at home here”
•Diversity in race, gender, ethnicity, economics, politics with mu-
tual respect & understanding. A community alive in love and sup-
port of one another.
Please remember our parishioners and friends who are in
need of our prayers: Vincent Aguglia, Fr. Frank Almade,
Mary Baumgart, Ron Bishop, Judy Bordone, Rita Ciesiel-
ski, Christine Pratt-Escribano, Mary Fleisner, Dorothy
Fox, Keith Frazier, Donna Gilvarry, Victoria Girasole,

beth Irwin, Chelsi Kennedy, Donald Kinast, Grace Klein,

Prokopec, Jim Ruposky, Ann Rue, Elaine and George Slip-
ko, Steven Slipko, Margaret Sporter, Elaine Terreri, Eliza-

For You Will Go Before the Lord to Prepare the Way
Today in the Church we celebrate the Birth of Saint John
the Baptist, the great forerunner who was sent to announce
the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and prepare the
way for him to fulfill his work in the world. John the Bap-
tist never sought to put the attention on himself, but al-
ways pointed the way to Jesus, whom the prophets had
foretold would come to save God’s people. He was a faith-
ful instrument of God who desired to decrease so that the
power and love of Jesus at work in the lives of his people
could increase. Since Christ has already come into the
world we can’t be his forerunners, but we can prepare the
way for him to enter into the hearts and lives of others.
The witness of our prayer, the example of our lives and the
encouragement of our words for others can turn their
hearts to greater trust in God and his grace at work for
them. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!
may we seek to prepare the way for others, and be open to
the ways in which they will work to make ready the path
for God in our hearts. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to
learn more and to stay informed.
