From Our Vice Pastor… “Hallelujah Christ is risen, Christ is risen indeed Hallelujah” is our Easter proclamation. On Easter morning we proclaim the tomb is empty and death has no hold upon us. It allows us to look forward with hope. Hope that simple little world. Hope that word that can get us moving when all we have is despair. Hope a powerful word that can move mountains On Easter morning we hear hope anew. We gather every Easter to remember, to retell and give thanks for the saving grace in the redemptive hope of God. We gather to remind ourselves of hope! In Easter we are reminded that we are a covenant people who will live in a love relationship with a God whom we know in the story of creation, liberation, deliverance, salvation and resurrection. On Easter morning we see the hope in the cross. The hopeless tool is turned upside down by God and turned into an instrument of hope. We hear again the power of the cross. God makes God’ self-present through weakness, vulnerability, suffering, forsaken and in the dying. In our abyss of our despair, in the painful reality of our mortality, in our ultimate loneliness God WILL find us. God always finds us in our darkness, our pain, our weakness and embraces us with total and unconditional acceptance. We see and we celebrate Christ. On Easter morning we say to death no, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE LAST WORD. We continue to proclaim the resurrection of Christ. We retell and remember this story. Nourished by the story of God’s Grace we are sent forth to live in God’s world and be part of the story. We are invited to be part of the story of salvation as our response to God’s grace. That is hope. Easter is morning of hope where we tell each other the story of our salvation and the truths of our history. The truth is that we are not alone. God is with us, god is present, God walks with us. God is Immanuel with us always. God makes all things new. We are continued to be gathered, formed, shaped, healed and united as the body of Christ. God continues to act. The story is old, but it is not finished. It is ongoing and we are part of that story. God is deeply embedded with God’s people. God is a god of liberation and God’s story goes on. The liberation, the salvation, the redemption continues with our hands and feet doing God’s work. Praise God. Praise God always. Hallelujah Christ is risen, Christ is risen indeed Hallelujah The Reverend Paul A. Miller

Dear Members and Friends of Zion,

I invite you all to join us for our outdoor 11 AM Easter worship service!

Pastor Rich Bowman will be presiding, Lois Buesser will play keyboard, and Dr. Ed Hedlund is our soloist. A lot of planning has gone into this worship service and we are of course hoping the weather will cooperate! We ask that you bring along your own lawn chair. Masks are required for everyone. If it rains, the service will be moved into Fellowship Hall (chairs will be provided, and masks are still required). Zion’s service will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube by early afternoon, and the link will be posted to our Facebook page, website, and emailed out to our Trumpet mail list.

Many thanks to Pastor Paul for his Lenten mid-week services. Thank you also for the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship services (via Zoom at 7 PM). The prayer vigil is taking place at Church of the Savior (you may contact Pastor to sign up and this can also be done virtually). As a reminder, kindly email the church office – [email protected] once you are fully vaccinated for Covid19. This information will assist council with indoor worship scheduling.

I have included the Call Committee report that was submitted to the church council on March 16th. Feel free to contact any member of the committee with questions. Remain positive! We will call the right pastor to Zion.

The opportunity presented itself to contract Mr. David Daehnke to organize the cemetery paperwork. Dave has extensive experience in this field. As a church council we voted unanimously to have this work get underway immediately. We are fortunate to have four (4) members volunteer to assist Dave on this project. Thank you to Chip Antonelli, Pete Minck, Cartney Ezyk and Jackie Bryan. The anticipated timeframe for completing this job is six (6) months.

Bergen Painters has made good progress on the wall and ceiling repairs and painting of the church’s interior. Balcony repair photos are included in this issue. The photo of the Madonna window was recently taken by Analise Olszewski. With the scissor lift being used for the paint job, she was able to take a close-up photo as the stained glass window had received its fresh coat of paint. A new 68” ceiling fan has been installed that makes a big difference in airflow. The 200th Anniversary Committee mailed out their capital campaign request letter and we have received $12,275 thus far. Thank you all for your generosity.

Our Paterson Men’s Shelter Dinners are back up and running. The 3rd Saturday of every month Zion provides dinner (and breakfast for the next day). Dotti and Ed Tyndell did all the cooking and delivery for the meal in March. Please volunteer to help! This is Zion’s outreach! Kindly call or text Dotti / 201-218-1206 or email: [email protected] with your offer to help.

Our friends and fellow members Tom May and Frieda Falcke have suffered serious health issues over the last several weeks. I have included contact information for both of them in this issue of the Trumpet. Please remember to keep them and their family members in your prayers.

Yours in faith, Karin

Pastoral Call Committee Report to Council for 3/16/2021 meeting

CALL COMMITTEE REPORT - FEBRUARY 3, 2021 via Zoom

Attendance: Pastor Dean Brown (representing the NJ Synod), Tom Wegman, Chip Antonelli, Kate May, Britt Jannelli, Nina Petersen, Cathie Smeedy

The Call Committee requested this meeting with Pastor Brown to discuss the previous candidates presented to our church. The first candidate met none/checked no boxes when compared to our MSP and the more recent candidate’s compensation requirements were far above our financial capabilities.

Pastor Brown reviewed with the committee the process of finding, vetting and presenting a candidate to a congregation: the Bishop reviews the candidate’s RMP, other Bishops are contacted to gain more insight into the candidate, Assistants to the Bishop are also involved in this process, and interviews are scheduled. Pastor Brown emphasized that the Synod’s receipt of a RMP is not a “rubber stamp” from the office. He also reiterated that our seeking a full-time pastor puts us at an advantage in the search process.

A potential candidate was suggested to us through Pastor Roy Almquist. We asked that the Synod discern, through the normal process, if this candidate is a potential match for our church. We stressed that the normal procedure should be followed with this candidate and not just presented to us because the name was suggested. He will reach out to the Bishop to locate this individual and get back to us with additional information.

CALL COMMITTEE REPORT – MARCH 12, 2021 via Zoom

Attendance: Tom Wegman, Chip Antonelli, Kate May, Nina Petersen, Britt Jannelli, Cathie Smeedy

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the recently received RMP for the candidate suggested to us by Pastor Almquist. All committee members received copies and were prepared to review the candidate’s strengths and the stated focus of their ministry.

The candidate recently completed studies in 2020 and has not yet received a call. We looked favorably on the candidate’s youth, enthusiasm and passion expressed in the RMP. In going deeper into the profile, as well as information found on social media sites, we determined that the areas outlined in the profile, such as working with prisoners and mission in inner city areas are not the opportunities that would be readily available in Saddle River. The passion and dedication to these causes was very evident in both the profile as well as social media sources, we felt the candidate would not be a good match for our congregation. To paraphrase Nina’s assessment, she felt we would be doing a disservice to this candidate to call him/her to our church. We all agreed that the candidate’s stated areas of interest would not be present in our neighboring communities. The committee voted unanimously not to move forward with this individual.

Tom will reach out to Pastor Brown and inform him of our discussion and decision.

Our friend, council member, cemetery superintendent, and long-time member of Zion, Tom May recently suffered a brain hemorrhage. After several weeks at Hackensack Medical Center, we are happy to let you know that Tom has been moved to JFK Rehabilitation Center in Edison, NJ. This facility will be working to help Tom recover.

Please continue to keep Tom and his wife, Kate in your prayers.

Cards of encouragement and cheer may be sent to:

ZION LUTHERAN CEMETERY The church council is pleased to announce the hiring of David Daehnke. Dave is currently the cemetery manager at Redeemer Ramsey and Wyckoff Reformed cemeteries.

Dave will lead the newly formed cemetery committee: Jackie Bryan, Pete Minck, Cartney Ezyk and Chip Antonelli (chair) in categorizing all cemetery documents. David will also create an accurate map of the cemetery depicting all the gravesites. He will also be creating appropriate forms that will be used in all cemetery transactions. This important organization is very much needed so that going forward we will be assured that the system in place will facilitate any cemetery business.

It is expected that this project will take up to 6 months with David working 10 hours per week. The council will use monies from the Zion Cemetery Investment account to fund this work.

We look forward to working with Dave and appreciate his willingness to help Zion.

Dear Friends, Sadly, Frieda, Zion Church member suffered a stroke on March 9th. She is home and has wonderful care from our caregiver, Barbara who was with her last year. Frieda is able to talk, although sometimes confused, and needs total care. Mom is taking this new reality quite gracefully but with moments of sadness and wondering what will happen next. She enjoys hearing from friends for short calls when convenient for her. We ask for your prayers. Our family has already experienced miracles regarding Mom’s incident. We praise God and know he is always with us. Cards of encouragement and cheer may be sent to: Mrs. Frieda Falcke 325 Brookside Avenue Allendale, NJ 07401

NEEDED REPAIRS ALMOST COMPLETE IN BALCONY

February 26, 2021

Dear Members and Friends of Zion,

Over 200 years ago a bottle of wine, a loaf of bread, a Bible and a hymnal were placed within the cornerstone of “ The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saddle River and Ramapough”. October 14th, 1821 marks the dedication of our beloved Zion Lutheran Church.

As our 200th Anniversary is fast approaching, the Anniversary Committee has been at work raising the funds needed to spruce up and complete needed capital improvements to the church in celebration of this momentous milestone. So far, we have completed: Exterior painting of the church Repair of damaged pews RefinishingtheFellowshipHalldoors New church landscaping and sidewalk lights

This is quite impressive, but not complete. We have several major projects still to be done, these include the interior painting of the church (currently underway) and replacement of the church carpeting.

The estimated cost for ALL improvements is approximately $50,000. We have raised $33,000 through designated donations and fundraisers. Another $20,000 is urgently needed to complete these tasks.

Prayerfully consider donating either by mailing a check to the Church, payable to Zion Lutheran Church, noting in the memo “for 200th Anniversary fund” or online by signing in/signing up at www.zionsr.org. Click the donate tab and select “200th Anniversary” from the drop down list to earmark your donation.

Thank you for helping to preserve and enrich Zion’s heritage for the future!
