Dear Fellow Members and Friends of Zion, September 2019 The Church Council and Call Committee are pleased to announce a special congregational meeting immediately following the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, September 15th. This worship service will be led by the pastoral candidate. The Church Council unanimously voted to proceed with this candidate recommended by our Call Committee. A special breakfast to meet and greet the Candidate will be held at Fellowship Hall before worship, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Pastor Kimberly Vaughn, a member of the Bishop’s staff, will conduct the special meeting. I encourage all of you to attend both the breakfast and worship service/meeting so you may cast your vote. Rally Day is Sunday, September 8th – worship will be held at Fellowship Hall and we will have an indoor picnic! We ask all those attending to bring either a side salad (potato, macaroni, coleslaw, etc.) or a dessert. We will sing the special hymn chosen by the ELCA for this day of service “God’s Work. Our Hands”. If you would like to help with the picnic, please contact the church office – [email protected] or / 201-327-0655 and leave your name and phone number. Thank you to Britt Jannelli for chairing our Beatles Night. We had a wonderful turnout; weather was spectacular and lots of fun and fellowship! Please be reminded the sign-up sheets are in the Church’s Narthex for helping prepare, deliver, and serve at the Men’s Shelter in Paterson. It is very rewarding to be a part of this outreach. Keeping in Touch from the Office of the Bishop

Dear Friends, I just returned from our ELCA Churchwide Assembly, along with almost 1000 other voting members (including 13 others from our synod1). We spent six days listening, discussing, praying, singing, meeting new friends, and living out our faith. We re-elected Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton to a second six-year term and elected Deacon Sue Rothmeyer to a six-year term as secretary. A number of memorials and resolutions were debated and adopted covering a variety of topics. Constitutional amendments were approved (or defeated), including a provision that declares ordination to be the entrance rite for deacons to come onto the roster of the ELCA. The ELCA offered an Apology to the African Descent Community for systemic racism and oppression in the church – the Apology was accepted by the African Descent Lutheran Association. We began a year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women, 40th Ordination Anniversary of the first African-American woman, and 10th Anniversary of the church removing barriers to ordination for LGBTQ people. We adopted a social statement called Faith, Sexism, and Justice: A Call to Action and a policy statement on inter-religious engagement. While the assembly engaged in a lot of work and stopped for worship in the middle of each day, I have only seen headlines about two actions – a prayer walk to the ICE office in Milwaukee and the approval of a memorial naming the ELCA a sanctuary church body. Both actions are public witnesses to our standing with refugees and asylum seekers, working for improved immigration policies, accompanying the most vulnerable among us, and praying for all who seek safer homes. Praying for an end to the detention of children seeking asylum and an end for the separation of families at our southern border is in line with the biblical call to love our neighbors. The word “sanctuary” when used in the context of immigration, can be understood in many ways; there is no legal definition of sanctuary. For some, the word elicits an emotional response, even without being sure what it means. In 2016, the ELCA adopted the AMMPARO strategy which speaks about sanctuary as everything from holding English classes to housing people to writing to congress – all of these are ways of being sanctuary. This action does not ask for anyone to engage in illegal behavior. Because we are church in three expressions (congregations, synods, and churchwide) the decision made at the Churchwide Assembly to become a sanctuary church body, only applies to the churchwide expression. Any congregation or synod wishing to become a sanctuary entity is free to decide to do so, or not. No congregation or synod is compelled to take on that designation. If a congregation wishes to become a sanctuary entity, it should also decide what that will mean. We have congregations in our synod that already do the work of being sanctuary, some with an official designation and others working quietly behind the scenes. As a synod, we are committed to calling for immigration reform, to supporting a ministry for those in the Elizabeth Detention Center (under the leadership of Pastor Ramon Collazo), and to working with neighbors who make NJ home. This commitment is long-standing and unwavering.

In the coming weeks, the voting members from our synod will share reflections of the Churchwide Assembly with you through Jersey Jottings. I hope you will read them and then thank those who gathered for this holy time of being church. Behind the headlines and social media posts, the Holy Spirit called, gathered, and breathed life into the assembly. I am grateful to be a part of such a church. Peace,

From our Vice Pastor…. Like a solemn sentry, the stone cross watched over us in the forest clearing as we gathered around a wooden table instead of the imposing stone altar. We worshiped in the round, benches circling the table where we gathered in a circle to be fed. Pastor Danielle Miller raised the bread and then a cup, “given for you, do this for the remembrance of me.” Last Sunday I received the body and blood of Jesus Christ as I worshiped with Pinecrest at Camp Nawakwa near Gettysburg, PA. Since 1927, campers, staff, and faculty gather for the weeklong Pinecrest Lutheran Leadership Ministries program. Each morning the campers (ages 15-25) participate in a bible class, leadership curriculum, then an elective course about faith. The rest of the day is filled with sports, free time, evening vespers, team activities, spiritual horizons, and devotions. This year I was invited to volunteer as a faculty member teaching the course, “Mindfulness, Meditation, and Faith.” Throughout my class and during the many activities, I noticed several things that make this camp unique:

1) By only meeting one week (instead of holding camp all summer) the staff, faculty, and campers have an intense

shared experience. 2) The campers shape their experience and grow as leaders by serving on student council, the fundraising team, the

curriculum committee, and as cabin leaders and assistant leaders. 3) Youth and young adults are learning to articulate their faith in authentic and mature ways.

Growing up in Colorado, I participated in summer church camp as a camper or counselor for over 11 years, but I have never experienced a camp like Pinecrest. While Pinecrest is an entirely unique program, all summer camps (in my experience) share one thing in common: it’s a holy bubble. Last week I saw campers praise Jesus, love one another, and embrace their weirdness. I saw a glimpse of what I used to experience when I was a camper: unconditional love and acceptance as a child of God. Camp was always a holy place set apart from the demanding and difficult world. I was like the disciple Peter on the mountain top with Jesus after the transfiguration, wanting to build a dwelling and stay there. I never wanted to leave camp. When I was 16 I asked my pastor, “Why can’t church be more like camp?” He simply said it’s different and can’t be the same. While church will never be the same as camp, we will always worship the same Lord, Jesus Christ. We can’t eat camp food every day, but we can be nourished and sustained by the body and blood of Jesus. We can’t live in cabin groups, but we can welcome strangers and create a safe place for people of all walks of life to be their truest selves. We can’t isolate ourselves from the world by going away to camp, but we can enter into our communities with a steadfast hope that is anchored in Jesus. The set apart holy bubble of camp is important and life-giving. Jesus himself withdrew from the community and crowds to the mountain, but he didn’t stay there. After he was transfigured, he went back down the mountain, into the crowds that were hungry, hurting, and lonely. And he calls us to follow. Come, let us be the body of Christ in our church and local communities.

Yours in Christ, Vice Pastor Jenny McLellan

P.S. If you know someone between the ages of 15-25 who might be interested in Pinecrest, send them my way or share the website with them: https://www.pinecrestllm.org/

Call Committee Report | August 2019

Call Committee: Anne Naramore (Chairperson and Council representative), Cartney Ezyk, Nina Petersen, Lisa Raffaelli, Cathie Smeedy, and Tom Wegman (Council representative) As you know, the Call Committee received a potential candidate from the Bishop in June, and we have been very busy in July and August reviewing this candidate’s qualifications. In addition, most of you know that the candidate is a woman (I “slipped” in my communications at a Church service so the “cat is out of the bag”). Progress To-Date: • The candidate was presented and recommended by Bishop Bartholomew, NJ Synod on June 26th to the Call

Committee. • The Zion Call Committee met on July 2nd to review the candidate’s Rostered Minister Profile in detail and

voted unanimously to interview the candidate. • The Zion Call Committee interviewed the candidate on July 6th at my house and then provided the

candidate with a tour of the Zion facilities. • The Call Committee listened to the candidate preach on July 21st at Messiah Lutheran Church in Oakland,

NJ. Subsequently at lunch that day, the Call Committee voted unanimously to recommend the candidate to the Council. Please note, Lisa Raffaelli was absent for these activities.

• The Call Committee then provided a Pastoral Candidate Report to the Council during the week of July 21st. This report outlined background information about the candidate and the Call Committee’s justification for recommending this candidate to the Council. The Call Committee used the priorities from our Ministry Site Profile (MSP) as the basis for our recommendations. These priorities included Preaching & Worship, Evangelism & Mission, Youth & Family Ministry, Christian Education, and Pastoral Care & Visitations.

• On July 24th, the Bishop provided the Call Committee with a recommended compensation package for this candidate. Subsequently, in late July, this compensation package was reviewed and discussed with the Finance Committee and Council.

• The Call Committee and the Council meet with the candidate and the candidate’s husband on July 30th. A nice dinner was provided, a productive interview discussion took place, and a tour of the Church was provided to the candidate and her husband.

• During late July, I conducted all references. I interviewed the references, documented the conversations, and provided a report to the Call Committee and Council. I used the MSP priorities (see above) as the basis for the reference check interviews.

• In late July, the candidate expressed her desire to go to the next step in the process – to preach to the congregation.

Next Step: • The Council will be meeting on August 27th to discuss the candidate’s qualifications and vote on whether or

not to go to the next step in the Call Process, which is to have the candidate preach to the congregation, and immediately following the service conduct a congregational vote for hiring or not hiring this candidate.

If the Council votes to proceed with having the candidate preach to the congregation, it will be extremely important for everyone at Zion to attend this service. Let’s face it, this is a huge decision and we want everyone involved – plus our constitution requires a quorum for this important vote. As a reminder, in order to participate in this pastoral candidate vote, you must have submitted a communion card and donated to the Church over the past 2 years. With Christ’s Love, Anne Naramore
