If you are like me, you are tired of hearing

about, reading about, talking about and

thinking about COVID-19. As I write this

article, we have not had a regular Sunday

worship service in about 8 weeks. As you

read this article it is the beginning of June

and there is no way of predicting when

things will be back to normal. Do you

remember normal? During all this time your

staff at Trinity has been doing its best to

maintain ministry. We have been producing

online worship services, writing devotionals,

and praying for our people. Our staff has

been making phone calls, producing Bible

studies and catching up on some old

business. Our teachers have maintained

instruction, engaged their students and

have closed out the school year. Your

elected leaders have continued to meet via

Zoom, make decisions and plans, and have

monitored the budget and operations of

Trinity. Our maintenance staff has cleaned

and disinfected, waxed and painted,

organized and groomed the buildings and

properties. Collectively we have been busy

doing everything we can, given the

limitation placed on us.

As members of Trinity, you have been

fantastic. You have encouraged the staff

and remembered them in your prayers. You

have engaged with online worship and Bible

studies. You have read Grace Notes, Jn831

posts, and Pastoral Epistles. You have

reached out to each other with phone calls,

texts, emails, Facebook shout outs and

drive-by parades. You have supported your

church through your faithful contributions

and have enabled us to keep our head

above water during these tumultuous times.

In all things, Trinity has risen to the

challenges before us and remained

optimistic.

Please keep the mission and

ministry of your church in your

prayers as we move forward.

Pandemics do not last forever.

Hard times come and go.

Regardless of the challenges we

face and the circumstances of life,

God remains faithful. During the

darkest days of Israel's history, the

weeping prophet, Jeremiah, wrote

in the book of Lamentations:

The steadfast love of the Lord never

ceases; his mercies never come to

an end;

23 they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

24 "The Lord is my portion," says my

soul, "therefore I will hope in him."

(Lam. 3:22-24)

In the scope of human history,

what we have endured thus far, is

nothing compared to what others

have endured. I do not want to

diminish the hardship people have

gone through. Across our nation

and around the globe people have

suffered and died, they have lost

their businesses and jobs, they

have suffered emotionally,

materially and spiritually. Yet, God

knows our every need and has

prepared a place beyond all pain

and suffering for us. Life may

present challenges, but the Lord's

steadfast love never ceases.

Pray for your church—for its staff,

leaders and members. Pray for our

community that we might continue

to reach out with the love of Christ

and serve in His name. Pray that

the Lord would use all things to His

honor and glory.

SUNDAY

ADULT BIBLE STUDY – "STUDY OF JESUS' LAST EVENING BEFORE

HIS CRUCIFIXION" — "Upper Room" Study of John 13-17

The most intense evening in the history of Christianity is Thursday

evening, the 14th of Nisan. We find Jesus with his disciples in the

upper room gathered for the Passover festival meal. Inspired by

the Holy Spirit, St. John dedicated 5 chapters of his Gospel (13-17)

to this evening. Almost 25% of the gospel covers these few hours of

one evening. Starting on Sunday, March 1st at 9:15 am, the

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study will begin a verse by verse

discussion of this special evening. It will be the subject of the

Lenten Season on Sunday mornings which will include but not be

limited to Jesus washing the Disciples feet; the prediction of his

betrayal and of Peter's denial; the promise of the Holy Spirit; and

Jesus' longest recorded prayer. Please join us for this concentrated,

focused study of Jesus' last evening before his crucifixion. It

promises full spiritual growth and blessings.

SON-RISERS BIBLE STUDY – LUTHERAN SPIRITUALITY –

WITNESS (Sharing our Faith)

Spirituality is a common term today, but what does it mean? To find

the right answer, Lutheran Spirituality directs adult Bible study

participants to God's Word. Lutheran Spirituality explores the

Bible, Luther's Small Catechism, and the Lutheran hymnal as

integral resources for living out our faith in a spiritually confused--

and confusing--world. In His Word, the Lord teaches His believers

to pray. It is through prayer, and His grace, that we can approach

His throne with our praise, confessions, fears...everything! This

study encourages participants to rejoice in prayer as a great

privilege, to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they pray, to

approach God the Father in prayer with faith in Jesus as their

Intercessor, to join with the congregation in praying for the world,

and so much more. Sessions include: Our Secret Vocation | The

Intercession of Jesus | The Gift of Prayer | Praying with Jesus |

Complaining | Congregational Prayer

Trinity Lutheran Church & School

Letter from Incoming Vicar Alvaro Witt Duarte

Dear Saints at Trinity Lutheran, my brothers and sisters,

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

This letter is to inform you that I accept my vicarage placement at Trinity

Lutheran Church, Saint Joseph, Michigan. After hearing your

congregation's name in the assignment service folks immediately began

reaching out to me. Some welcomed me to the congregation, and others

told me how great the location is. This reassured me of God's provision. I

look forward to personally getting to the congregation and the town. I've

always lived “by the water,” in Massachusetts. But this will be another kind

of “by the water”!

My family immigrated from Brazil to Boston in the year 2000. My older

sister and I received much of our education in the U.S. I graduated high

school in Peabody, Mass, and continued living in the same town through

college. I received my bachelor's in History and Secondary Education from

Salem State University. Right after I had the privilege of teaching History at

Beverly High School for almost four years, a job I loved. However, the itch I

had since middle school to go to seminary never went away. So, with the

help of my family, church, pastors, and friends. I made the decision to go.

I've never looked back!

During all this time I've become interested in a few things and have

devoted part of my time to them. Music has filled much of that time. I've

played the saxophone since the 4th grade, and I've been singing for 10

years, especially in the style of shape-notes. For some time I was involved

in a competition pipes and drums band. Through all those musical

experiences I learned the role music plays in our lives, especially as

Christians. Our rich musical tradition is not in vain, it helps shape our

devotional life. Along with education, this is something I would like to work

with at Trinity.

Finally, I want to ask the Lord of the Harvest, the Bridegroom of the Church

to continue to send and protect the laborers of the harvest, and I ask Him

to protect and care for His bride, especially during these uncertain times.

May we rely only on Him and His great mercy.

Thank you for opening your arms to the vicarage program and for opening

your arms to me.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Word of Mouth! Let people know about the great

education at Trinity Lutheran School!

Word of mouth is the single most important way that

people learn about the excellent instruction, amazing

student teacher ratio and caring classroom teachers

here at Trinity. The school has a challenging curriculum

and supportive teachers in grades K-8. A Christian

Education makes a difference in the future children

today.

Contact the school office today 269-983-3056.

Michael Johnson has received and accepted a call to St.

Paul, Bonduel, Wisconsin. Please keep Michael, St. Paul

and Trinity in your prayers as he enters God's ministry

in a new location in the fall.

ECC

It is finally Summer! I love summer in Southwest

Michigan. The beach is one of my favorite places to

be. This summer is going to be different from any

other summer we know though, isn't it? That doesn't

mean we can't enjoy it. There is still so much we can

do!! As of this writing the ECC was only able to

open for a few students in Mid May. We are hoping

that by June 1st we are able to have all of our

children return to care. Despite the restrictions we

have a fun and exciting summer planned and we

want to share it with as many children as we

possibly can. We are also making plans for the fall.

We are celebrating with Bonnie Johnson as she

retires and we are praying that the Lord sends us

the perfect person to replace her. They have some

big shoes to fill! Thank you all for your prayers and

support these past few months. It has been hard not

being able to care for our children at the center. We

hope that you have been able to find blessings

amid the crisis and have taken time to enjoy what

you can and leave the rest to the Lord.

Family Ministry

These are uncertain times that we are living in and everyone at Trinity is missing all the children and

families! While our ministry events for this month may be postponed or moved around that does not

mean that ministry stops. We are reminded in John 16:33 that Jesus has already overcome all our crises

and worldly problems. He says "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the

world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." We can find comfort in these

words and know that this is just a season in our lives, and seasons change. God has a plan for us far

greater than we can ever imagine. Trinity cannot wait to see your families, and we're counting down the

days until we can be at church together again!

Devotion for Kids: When are you a Christian?

by Chelsie Schmeisser

When are you a Christian? Are you a Christian just while you're at church? Of course not! When you were

baptized, the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit was given to you, just like your mom and dad gave

you your name when you were born. Nobody can take your name away from you. It's yours. It belongs to

you and you belong to it. Your name is who you are. The same thing happened in your Baptism. When

you were baptized you became a child of God, and nobody can take that away from you.

So when are you a Christian? All the time! You're a Christian at church, at home, and at school. You're a

Christian in the grocery store and at the beach. You're a Christian in the car, riding your bike, or walking

down the sidewalk. You're a Christian when you wake up in the morning, when you go to sleep at night,

and all of the time in between.

What does being a Christian look like? Jesus tells us "let your light shine before others, so that they may

see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:16). In this verse, Jesus tells

us that we should share our light with other people. What is our light? Our Light is Jesus, who is the Light

of the World. We share the Light of Christ through the things we say and do. We share Jesus with others by

telling them about Him or inviting them to go to church with us. We also share Jesus when we use kind

words, when we listen to our parents and respect our teachers. We share Jesus when we help someone in

need, and when we share what we have with other people. We share Jesus by living the way He wants us

to live. We share Him in everything that we do because we are Christians all the time. We are Christians

all the time because Jesus loves us, died on the cross for us, rose from the dead for us, and gives us His

name in Holy Baptism.

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for giving us your Name in our Baptism. Thank you for making us

children of God. Help us to share Your love with others, so that everyone may know You. In Your Name we

pray, Amen.

The only thing that we can count on is that the Lord our God is in control. He is watching over us and directing those in our

cities, towns, and the world as to our next move. This is a virus that is unpredictable and is devastating. We all need to do our

part in staying safe. Keep busy in your home with crafts, cleaning out closets, drawers and cabinets. Get rid of all those things

that you don't need any more. We will all come out of this with our homes looking less cluttered and well organized.

Remember to exercise. Get out for a walk. Eat healthy and please feed the soul. Pastor and staff have many Bible Studies

and online church services that can be found on Trinity's web site www.trinitystjoe.org. You can also tune in to Channel 6/46

WHME at 11 a.m. on Sunday for Worship Anew which is a Lutheran service from Ft. Wayne Seminary featuring Guest Pastors

each Sunday.

We all need to keep our families and friends in our prayers. Dear Lord, I trust that You are in control of my life at all times.

Calm my heart and keep it away from the spirit of fear and anxiety. You are the only one who can comfort me. Surround me

with your peace that surpasses all understanding. Raise me up in Your victorious right hand. Walk with me. Grant me Your

strength. Help me to focus on You and not on the world. Enable me God to have patience and to fully depend on You for

strength. Call and stay connected with your loved ones and let them know what they mean to you. Encourage a visit from the

grandchildren. They can talk to you through the window. And when you venture out, keep a safe distance (six feet) and

please wear a mask... and wash, wash, wash your hands. ~Your Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid Society

Enlightenment of Bees, by Rachel Linden

At 26, idealistic baker Mia West has her entire life planned out: a Craftsman cottage in Seattle, baking at The Butter

Emporium, and the love of her life, her boyfriend Ethan, by her side. But when Ethan breaks up with her instead of

proposing on their sixth dating anniversary (with the Tiffany blue box in his pocket), Mia’s carefully planned future crumbles.

Adrift and devastated, she determines to find new meaning in her life by helping those in need. Guided by recurring dreams

about honeybees that seem to be leading her toward this new path in life, Mia joins her vivacious housemate Rosie on an

around-the-world humanitarian trip funded by the reclusive billionaire, Lars Lindstrom. Along with a famous grunge rock

star, an Ethiopian immigrant, and an unsettlingly attractive Hawaiian urban farmer named Kai, Mia and Rosie embark on

the trip of a lifetime. From the slums of Mumbai to a Hungarian border camp during the refugee crisis, Mia’s eyes are

opened and her idealistic vision is challenged as she experiences the euphoria, disillusionment, and heartbreaking reality of

humanitarian work abroad. As Mia grapples with how to make a difference in an overwhelmingly difficult world,

circumstances force her to choose between the life she thought she wanted and the unexpected life she has built.

Sleeping Mat Ministry / PLARN Gathering

The Sleeping Mat Ministry is looking for volunteers to assist in cutting the plastic bags. Also assembling the bags into Plarn

(plastic yarn) and crocheting the Plarn into the mats. Once a mat is completed they will be distributed into our community to

the homeless. This is something that can be done at home or you are in invited to come to the Plarn Gathering which meets

the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, from 2:00-4:00pm in the Lighthouse Cafe, Trinity Ministry Center. The most important

thing that we all can do is keep those that are homeless in our prayers. For more information please contact the church office.

TRINITY QUILTERS meet on Thursdays, from 11a – 2:30p to work on quilts, to date this year, they have completed 24 +

quilts to be sent to the less fortunate overseas, through the Lutheran World Relief organization. They are also providing

small quilts for infant baptisms at our church. Work can be done at home making squares and then bringing them back to

the group to put together. If you know how to tie knots you can be of great help to this group. If you have questions or are

interested in joining this group, call Helen @ 429-8503 or the church office at 983-5000.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

By Janet Frazier

1951 - (I had to look up the 1950 era history of our United States. For those of us who were too young to

remember, 1950 through the next few years was when North Korea invaded South Korea – and the Korean

Conflict began. The Soviet Union was also involved when they began to arm their ships with nuclear weapons.

As in this present time, there was so much to be concerned about. )

Found in the 1951 Messenger (the name of the monthly newsletter at that time) = Words of Wisdom: "When

your flesh tempts you to get thoroughly disgusted with world conditions. when the devil wants to make you

believe that the whole world is rotten and you might as well go with it, when your contacts with the world leave

you comfortless and hopeless, then by all means, turn to the Cross of Jesus and consider how much He loves

you and what He did to prove His love and to make you a child of God."

OCTOBER, 1955 from The Messenger:

A pupil in the confirmation class of 1955 wrote a summary of what she had understood in a sermon during a

church service. The text was Exodus 15:26. "I am the Lord that healeth thee." This was written by Carol Burandt,

a member of that confirmation class. Miss Burandt took this text, listened to the sermon, made a few notes, and

then wrote her resume in the form of a poem:

JESUS OUR HEAVENLY PHYSICIAN

When Jesus looks at us to diagnose our case,

Just one outstanding sickness meets His all-knowing face.

This sickness shows itself outside ourselves and in,

The sickness as you know is the dread disease of sin.

Though doctors here on earth can't always cure men,

Our Savior, if we're willing can make us well again.

If only we believe that what God says is right,

And try to do what's good before

our Father's sight.

Then Jesus with His blood will

make us white and clean,

And when we are discouraged,

upon Him we can lean.

But we must always try to repay our

Lord with love,

And spread news of Christ, the

Physician in heav'n above.

1957 -- In this month of June it is

interesting to note that the 1957 eighth

grade class numbered 63 pupils. It is

the largest graduating class in the

history of Trinity Lutheran School.

Soup Kitchen — 144 served, 5 volunteers

The Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen was forced to modify

its service this month to comply with safety precautions

for the COVID-19 pandemic. Three high school

volunteers helped to bake 144 cupcakes and assemble

sack lunches to be distributed at the Soup Kitchen.

Benevolent Fund — Suspended due to COVID-19

Community Dinner — Cancelled due to COVID-19

Sort-N-Share — Suspended due to COVID-19

Sleeping Mat Ministry — Suspended due to COVID-19

Food Truck — Households – 187, Individuals – 604

Seniors – 122, Children – 228, Veterans - 26

Volunteers – 17, Pounds of Food – 10,366

We continued our "Drive Through" version of the Mobile

Food Truck. Thanks to a grant from SWMICares and

grant donations to Feeding America we were able to

deliver over 10,366 pounds of food to 187 families.

We also included whole chickens and shelf stable

milk to the variety of fruits, vegetables and baked

goods. Volunteers assembled boxes of food and our

guests were able to drive through, pop the trunk or

open the back seat and food was loaded directly into

their vehicle. Things went remarkably well for our new

effort and we will repeat it again for May. As always – to

God be the Glory and thank you volunteers.

Relax! The LORD is God! By Vicar Timothy D. Schmeisser

"Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10a

There is a certain simplicity to this partial verse that speaks clearly, even when we're stressed. It sounds so calm and so certain, that it's hard not to

want to listen. "Be still," says the LORD. Our heavenly Father invites us to relax, slow down, unwind a little bit. One translator even takes this word

to mean "go limp." What a wonderful picture that is, to be still, calm, and relaxed.

Yet that doesn't really seem possible for us, does it? There is so much going on in the world and so much going on in our lives that there doesn't

seem to be any room left for stillness. We have deadlines to meet, schedules to keep, and responsibilities to fulfill. There are things that we have

to do, and so little time in which to do them. On top of that, the events taking place in our country have us worried. As I write this, the Stay at

Home order is still in effect, and many people worry about the state of our nation. We worry about all of the things that we can't control, things

that could impact our lives or hurt our loved ones. With all of that on our minds, how can we be still?

The answer is really quite simple. We can be still when we know that the LORD is God. True, we know it in our minds, but God is calling us to a

deeper, more intimate kind of knowledge. He calls us to know in our hearts, to trust with all of our beings, that He is God. Luther described this in

his explanation to the First Commandment, "We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things." That includes when things are difficult,

frightening, and stressful.

And why would knowing and trusting in God help us? Because He is God. The LORD is the One in control, the One on the throne of heaven and

earth. The One who reigns forever and ever is our God. The King of the universe is the One who invites us to call Him Father. We know that our

Father loves us, for we have seen it in the death of His Son in our place. We know that He will take care of us, because we have seen it in the

resurrection of His Son on the third day. We know that our heavenly Father will work all things for our good, for He has promised it (Rom 8:28).

We know that our Father is indeed God, and that all things are in His hands. What do we really have to fear? Nothing at all. So, let us be still, and

know that He is God.

Faith in Verse:by Bob Lawrence

Faith In Verse - Never Alone LSB 761

While I draw this fleeting breath,

When mine eye-lids close in death,

When I soar to worlds unknown.

See Thee on Thy judgment throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee (Rock of Ages, verse 4)

Among the many themes being broadcast during the coverage of the Covid crisis, perhaps the most

touching is the one which bewails the fact that people have to be left at a hospital to be treated without

the comfort of their loved ones around them. The situation becomes even worse if the patient weakens to

the point of death and has to die with strangers around their bedside instead of family members. For all of

us this situation seems dreadful, but for people who have no faith it must be terrifying.

For people who have no faith, death is just a time of departure. The only thing for them that relieves the

fear of the unknown beyond the grave is the comfort of the love of those they cherish. But once

consciousness fades, even their loved ones cannot ease the helplessness of death. All they can say is good

by and the departed one is simply gone. That is one of the complications of this disease that makes it so

frightful for so many in the world - dying alone.

For people of faith, however, death is not just a time of departure. Thankfully, it is also a time for greeting.

It is the time when we Christians can finally meet our Lord face to face. For us the unknown is already

known. For us it is not a place to fear but a place to embrace or, more precisely, to be embraced by our

Lord. It is a place of joy, of endless celebration, and peace the likes of which we will never have here on

earth.

Of course being ill and being cut off from family in a hospital with a dangerous disease is scary, but

Christians are never there alone. God is also in those hospitals and with faith and trust in Him we always

have someone in whom we can place all our fears. Knowing this to be true, we can also know that even if

we are called from this life, He is right there at our bedside waiting to take us by the hand and lead us to

our even larger family above.
