USS ARK News of God’s People in Action from the Upper Susquehanna Synod, ELCA October, 2017

Fifth Edition of “God’s work. Our hands.” Day Editor’s Note: The following are reports we received of congregations who held service projects as part of the ELCA’s Day of Service in September. On Sunday, September 10, St. Peter's, Kreamer (Interim Pastor Vickie Brown) showed God's Work in the community as they held their Fall Festival. The festival included free games and prizes, fire truck rides from the Kreamer fire department, a tour of the Kreamer ambulance, as well as a cake walk where more than 45 cakes were given away! All the money collected from the food stand was donated equally between the Meals for Seals and the Meals for Mustang programs. Around 100 people participated. Himmel’s, Dornsife (Pastor Jane Compton) declare they have again outdone themselves doing God’s Work! Following a meal prepared by some of their fabulous cooks, there was lots of chatter and laughter around the church as participants knotted blankets, sorted Angel’s Closet clothing and filled shoe boxes and school bags. There was an awesome group picking-up trash along Schwaben Creek Road. Their youth also did yard work for two families. Members delivered meals to shut-ins, a needy family, and Haven Ministries; visits were also made to two members. God’s Love and Cookies Reporting by Harry Deitz As part of “God’s work, Our hands” Sunday, parishioners of Grace, Shamokin (Pastor Sarah Hershberger) greeted the people who stopped in front of CVS Pharmacy. Passersby had the opportunity to also taste a va-riety of cookies, baked or purchased by the parishioners, to offer a simple reminder that God’s love is often spoken best through the little things in life such as baked goods. The idea for the unusual evangelistic project was conceived by Pastor Hershberger. In her monthly newslet-ter article, she told the congregation she had a “crazy idea.” “First, I’m going to bake a couple batches of cookies,” she wrote. “Second, I’m going to make a sign that says something about God’s love for you. And then after church on Sunday, I’m going to take these items out of my car. I’m going to set up a table some-where here in Shamokin where there’s foot traffic and offer cookies to passersby and tell them they are loved by a loving God. And that’s it.” The idea caught on. On Sunday after services at St. Paul’s, Gowen City, and Grace, she had enough freshly baked cookies to fill the back seat of her car and then some. She was joined by several the parishion-ers handing out the “goodies” to many of the folks who visited downtown Shamokin. The congregations did a similar event on October 1st as part of a public “blessing of the pets” service.

Synod Pastor Becomes U.S. Citizen Pastor Carla Volland (Evangelical, Reedsville), became one of America's newest citizens on August 4, 2017. She took her Oath of Allegiance during the naturalization ceremony at the Department of Homeland Security in Phila-delphia. The week prior, she took a civics test. Volland said, “I learned about the history and geography of the country and set-up of the U.S. government. There were 100 questions I prepared for and they asked me ten. Prior to the interview test, I was told that the interviews last between 45 minutes and two hours. I had to submit an 18-page application as well. Even though I am now an American, I still have my German accent!” Pastor Volland’s congregation celebrated this achievement with her the following Sunday by wearing red, white, and blue and waving small American flags while singing "God Bless America." The celebration continued after the morning worship service with the viewing of photos from the oath ceremony. Parishioners also decorated her house as well as the Fellowship Hall and the welcome sign in front of the church. She was presented with a red, white, and blue stole, and everyone enjoyed a patriotic-themed cake during fellowship time after church. This celebration coincidentally occurred on the same day that they blessed 40 quilts made for Lutheran World Relief and three quilts presented to recent high school graduates.

Up and Down the Valleys Another semester is underway with Protestant Campus Ministry at Bloomsburg University! Campus Pastor Jill Young and her students are settling into their new office at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, just two blocks down from Carver Hall. The church offered space after the ministry lost their on-campus office. St. James, Muncy (Pastor Bev Cotner) is our latest congregation to be featured on our website. Check our homepage at uss-elca.org for our Featured Congregation. Port Royal Lutheran Church (Pastor Charles Hershberger), once again hosted a food stand at the annual Juni-ata County Fair in early September. The fair stand is held in a building at the fairgrounds owned by the church since 1953. All proceeds from sales go to charities. It is located on Lutheran Lane! The Upper Susquehanna Synodical Women held their convention in July at Camp Mount Luther. Jodi Ellis presented a Bible study and Sandy Nelson held a workshop on her travels in Liberia. Bishop Barbara J. Collins presided at the worship service with Peggy Bohart assisting her. Churchwide Representative Dawn Smith installed the officers for the coming year: Jean Crumb, President; Peggy Bohart, Vice President; Robin Latsha, Secretary; Wendy Zajac, Treasurer; Board Members: Kathy Whitesel, Doris Mertz, Linda Leister, Anne Spicer, Janet Dietrich, and Carol Winter.

Clergy Notes: Rev. Lois Martin has resigned as intentional interim pastor of Pine Street, Danville. Synod Council extended a call to the Rev. Mark Galbraith as Intentional Interim Pastor at the Milton Parish for a one-year term beginning November 1, 2017. Rev. Jerri Carlin has been called to serve St. John’s, Lewistown. She begins October 16, 2017, and will be installed at 2:00 p.m. on November 12.

The center is enjoying lots of a fall activities. The tod-dlers looked at the inside of a pumpkin. Preschool took nature walks and collected leaves. The babies painted paper to look like pumpkins. We had a fall costume parade on October 31st with parents and community members handing out candy to our the Sonbeam children.

We are looking forward to November. We will be closed for Thanksgiving and Black Friday so we can spend time with our families. We are thankful for all that God has given us this year.

We have a new staff member starting this month. Her name is Amber Knouse. She will be our part time School Age teacher. She will be working a split shift. She will come in every morning at 7 am and come back on T, W, & F at 3 pm. We are still looking to hire a full time older toddler teacher and a part time afternoon preschool teacher. We are currently enrolling for all age groups (6 weeks to 12 years old). Please send any inquires my way. Colene Yakamook Sonbeam ELC Director
