Pastor’s Page Asante Sana Jesu! This is KiSwahili for Thank

you very much Jesus! And I am so thankful and happy

to be here at Trinity Lutheran in South Milwaukee.

First, I need to get to know you. These first weeks and months will

be times of learning names and hearing your stories of faith and

life. I’ve asked that you all wear name tags for the first few weeks

of worship so that I can get to know you. You have one name to

learn and I have many. Someone asked me how to pronounce my

last name. “mmmbeesay” would be a basic pronunciation.

Second, this first year will be a time of prayer, discernment,

and working together as a community of faith as we figure out how

to collaborate as the Body of Christ and as a community of faith in

South Milwaukee to fulfill the mission God has for us here.

Someone asked me at the meet and greet back in August

what it was on Trinity’s MSP that attracted me to you. I’d like to

give you a better sense of what I saw – I am excited about the

committed lay leadership you have – those working with youth and

families and a desire to work toward or identify cross-generational

ministry. We are a church together and not isolated by age, gender,

race or any other division we humans like to create. I am also

excited about your desire to reach further into the community. This

is hard work – it means building relationships, having

conversations and inviting people around the table – but I sense

energy for this and am excited to move ahead. Finally, I sensed a

desire to go deeper in your faith journey through education, prayer,

worship and service. The top item on my letter of call was

education – I love to teach – I hope you love to learn and will teach

me as well. We take this journey of faith together and I look

forward to accompanying you on the journey.

“Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith,

from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 6:23

Stewardship Our church is at the time of Stewardship, which is a once-

a-year time to think about where you are in your life and where

your faith fits in. I love jokes and am reminded to share a few of

my favorites.

One day, a one-dollar bill met a twenty-dollar bill and

said, "Hey, where've you been? I haven't seen you around here

much." The twenty answered (as the dollar bill listened

enviously), "I've been hanging out at the casinos, went out on a

cruise and did the rounds of the ship, back to the United States for

a while, went to a couple of baseball games, to the mall, that kind

of stuff. How about you?" The one-dollar bill said, "You know,

same old stuff, church, church, church."

A man died and went to heaven. He was met at the Pearly

Gates by St. Peter who led him down the golden streets. They past

mansion after beautiful mansion until they came to the end of the

street where they stopped in front of a shack. The man asked St.

Peter why he got a hut when there were so many mansions he

could live in. St. Peter replied, "We did the best we could with the

money you sent us."

Lastly, this joke. Three men were talking about how they

decided what to give to the church. The first man said, “I cash my

paycheck and take the whole stack of cash to church. Standing at

the altar, I throw the money in the air. Whatever lands on the altar

is for the Lord; whatever falls to the ground, I get to keep”. The

second man said, “I do something similar. I get my check in cash.

Standing at the altar, I throw the money in the air. Whatever lands

on the altar I get to keep; whatever lands on the floor, is for the

Lord.” The third man then spoke up, “I do something similar to

both of you. Standing at the altar with my cash, I throw it in the

air. Whatever the Lord wants, He takes; whatever falls, I get to

keep.”

Well, I think that’s enough with the jokes. The serious

message that I want to leave with you is this… You have a need

and obligation to give. By giving of yourselves, you are opening

up to the rich blessings and comfort only the Lord our God can

give. In the Old Testament it was called tithing, which means a

tenth or 10%. It was also called first fruits, which is from the top,

not just from what you have leftover. So, in this time of

stewardship, the message is simple… Please give.

Bible Study Opportunities

Thursday morning

The Thursday morning Bible Study group will continue

weekly gatherings this month at 10:30 AM. Our focus will

continue Gospel readings from Mark. The final weekend in

November is Christ the King, which takes us into John’s Gospel.

Sunday morning

The Sunday morning Bible Study meets during the 9:15

Education Hour in Rm. 118. We will continue with 1st Kings.

Look for other bible study opportunities beginning in

February, 2019.

INSTALLATION WEEKEND

Pastor Denise M.H. Mbise will be

installed on the weekend of November 17 and

18 by Pastor Jennifer Arnold. Join us for an

appetizer reception on November 18th after

the 10:30 worship service.

TRIM THE TREE

December 1st is the 1st weekend of Advent.

Join us at 9:00 on Saturday, December 1st to

decorate the church for Christmas.

Lifelong saints

Rather than limit the celebration of saints to one Sunday,

some churches now observe a Season of Saints from World

Communion Sunday (the first Sunday in October) to All Saints’

Sunday (the first Sunday in November).

Saints aren’t merely exceptional Christians, writes worship

director Taylor Burton-Edwards. Instead, they’re simply believers,

all of whom are undergoing a lifetime of transformation into

Christ’s own people.

Pointing to a saint-themed hymn by Charles Wesley,

Burton-Edwards notes that the lyrics are intended to be an “anthem

for a lifetime,” not a once-yearly occasion.

Come, let us join our friends above

who have obtained the prize,

and on the eagle wings of love

to joys celestial rise.

Let saints on earth unite to sing

with those to glory gone,

for all the servants of our King

in earth and heaven are one.

So proud of these girls! Their September

bake sale at church raised over $100 for

Lutheran Social Services! Today they got a

chance to learn how their donation will help

LSS Foster Care (the program of their

choosing). Thank you, McKinley and

Clare! — at Lutheran Social Services of WI

& Upper MI.

FINANCE MINISTRY TEAM

September ended with a positive net income of $86.33.

YTD is not ($10,008.30). YTD gifting is down $4,285 from this

time last year. We still have a long way to go to reduce this

deficit. We have transferred a total of $10,000 from reserves to

cover any potential overdrawn funds in our checking account.

Our goal is to pay it back before year end.

Thanks to all our generous congregants for your regular

gifting and special gifting. The church is the people and TLC has

always come through, just like family comes through for each

other in times of need.

Small Building Improvement Fund

Balance $4,264.81

o Additional parking lot bills came out of this account. The

rear parking lot and main parking lot have been resurfaced.

This should correct the problem of water in the fellowship

hall.

THRIVENT ACTION TEAM GRANTS: If you are a

Thrivent member, you are probably eligible to apply for two

$250 grants per calendar year. If you have one available in the

next few months, we are asking you to think of Trinity. We

are looking for grants for the following: (3) for Interfaith:

Annual Christmas gift bag packing event, poinsettias for their

clients, and postage. Another idea is for the Sunday School

Christmas Program. In November, Trinity is sponsoring the

Community Meal in South Milwaukee, and would like a grant

for that as well. If you have another idea, please let us know.

If you have used one outside of Trinity, please let Karen know.

It gives us ideas where we may be able to use future grants.

SATURDAY STITCHER’S

Hey, Stitcher's (knitters, people who

crochet, do counted cross stitch, embroidery

or any hand work) we are meeting on

Saturday November 10th 1-3 p.m. We

typically meet on the second Saturday of each

month. If you would like to learn to knit or

crochet, we have ladies who could help you with that. Come

join us on Saturday November10th at 1:00. All are welcome!

TRINITY SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

As we look to another year of providing Church

Scholarships to worthy individuals, we again

promote the guidance for awarding them:

1. Applicants are active in the life of the

congregation through worship, receiving the sacraments,

continuing education (Sunday School, Bible Study,

Campus Ministry programs), youth events, and volunteer

work.

2. Applicants are accepted or enrolled as a full time student

to attend classes on a campus of a Lutheran seminary,

Lutheran college, or other accredited colleges and

universities.

3. Applicants are seeking a degree at one of the following

levels:

Associate Degree

Bachelor Degree

Master Degree

Ph D

4. Applicants may receive one scholarship from Trinity

Lutheran church for each degree he/she is pursuing. If an

applicant is not successful in receiving a scholarship in a

given year, he/she may apply the following year.

We appreciate the generosity of all those who have given to the

Scholarship Program and ask for your continued support.

Donations to the Scholarship program should be made using the

blue designated fund envelopes or a plain envelope. Please

indicate Scholarship Fund on either envelope.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS

Confirmation Congratulations to our nine confirmands,

Matthew Cieczka, Donald Fritz, Will Haeger, Joshua Jeske,

Jonas Johnson, Avery LaMere, Molly Radtke, Matthew

Schraith, and Owen Sell who will affirm their baptism at the

10:30 service on October 28th. While this is a significant

accomplishment for these young people, it also presents an

opening to life in the adult congregation, especially

opportunities for service as well as continuing Christian

Education and Bible Study.

Karts for Kids Thank You to all who contributed the

Education Team’s “Karts for Kids” food drive which

concluded on October 7th. These were grab and go or quick

heat-up breakfast and lunch items that were given to a local

private high school to students who cannot afford breakfast or

lunch. They were much appreciated.

Sunday School Sings The 3 year old through 5th grade

classes are practicing their singing on Sunday mornings in the

choir room during the 9:15 education hour. We expect they

will present their songs at the beginning of the 10:30 service

on Sunday, October 21st.

Sunday School Christmas Program This year our

Christmas Program is scheduled for presentation at 3:30 PM

on Saturday, December 15th. Please note the timing is not the

same as last year so as not to interfere with other Saturday

afternoon activities. We hope you can join us for this annual

event. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled from 12:30 to

2:30 PM on Sunday December 2nd and at the same time on

Sunday, December 9th with some limitation for the 3 Year and

4 Year Old classes.

Hat, Sock, and Mitten Tree This annual giving event kicks

off with the Tree set up in the narthex by Sunday, November

11th. Please bring your gifts of holiday warmth and cheer

(gloves, mittens, socks, scarves, earmuffs, hats and caps,)

either purchased or homemade and place them on or under the

Tree for those in need at the South Milwaukee Human

Concerns. Other cold weather clothing can also be donated.

As in the past we will make two deliveries, one before

Christmas and one after the new year. We thank all who

support this annual effort.

Sun of Righteousness

The sun is often used as a symbol for Christ, especially during

church-year seasons that use prophetic imagery and focus on

Jesus’ second coming. Malachi 4:2 — “But for you who fear

my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in

its wings” (ESV) — is echoed in the Christmas hymn “Hark,

the Herald Angels Sing”:

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

2018 WORLD HUNGER EFFORT

Our 2018 ELCA Good Gift Effort is “Send a girl

to school.” Your gift of $5 per month will provide

school fees and a uniform for a girl. This program

is run by the ELCA’s World Hunger office.

Because our offerings support the World Hunger office, all of

the funds donated go to the program to send a girl to school.

CAMPAIGN HAS MATCHING CHALLENGE

Thrivent Member Group will once again match up to $1,000 for

TLCs annual Good Gifts campaign “Send a girl to school”.

These annual “jug in the back of church” gifting opportunities

provide much needed financial support to areas throughout the

world that lack basic needs. Last year, this program at Trinity

sent over $2,500 to Good Gifts-Check-ups for Children.

SOUTHSHORE REGIONAL INTERFAITH

Volunteers are needed to help older adults so they can

remain independent and continue to live in their homes or

apartments. The following are some ways you can help:

• Drive an older adult to a medical appointment

• Help with grocery shopping or errands

• Take to hair appointments, bank and post office

• Visit someone who is homebound

• Do a minor home repair

• Assist with fund raising events

• Lend a hand with yard work (or snow removal in winter)

Volunteering is on a “flexible” (when you’re available)

basis. There are no set hours or set times (unless you want them).

We work around your schedule. For more information or to sign

up, please call 762-1998, or stop in the office. Information is also

available outside the Interfaith office.

TENT RENTAL:

Trinity Lutheran owns a 20’ x 30’ tent that is available for

rental for $75.00. Be sure to keep this in mind for your next

family gathering! Check with the office to reserve a date.

TRINITY HAS CEMETERY PLOTS FOR SALE

Trinity has acquired 10 cemetery plots from past members and

is offering them for sale at a discount. There are 4 lots at

Arlington Park in Greenfield and 6 lots at Forest Hill in Oak

Creek. If interested, or know of someone who might be

interested, please contact the church office.
