TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as com- prised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly—repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn’t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assem- bly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ’s body. By contrast, the churches of the Refor- mation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sun- day school happens downstairs while the adults cel- ebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that’s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the as- sembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Called by Name At Baptism we are given a name by which we are known not only to our family and friends, but also to God. Like Cyrus in today’s first reading, throughout our lives God calls us by name as he asks us to follow him and to be his instrument in the world. As God calls us by our name and we call out to him as Abba (Father) we recognize how intimately God loves us. It also reveals that we are all sisters and brothers in the family of faith and heirs to the kingdom of God. On Mission for The Church Alive! is our opportunity to build up and strengthen the family of faith in the Diocese of Pittsburgh as we look for ways to extend our hearts to each other as God extends his heart to us. Of course, family relationships aren’t al- ways perfect and can take hard work to grow stronger. We will have to work hard to strengthen the family of faith in our parishes, but it will be worth it as we journey together towards God’s kingdom. Get to know those who sit near you at Mass, who gather in fellowship after Mass or even people from churches near you and allow your heart to expand in love. ST. JUDE NOVENA—CONTINUES Our annual novena to the Apostle St.

Jude, that began on Friday, October 20th continues as follows: Saturday and Sunday—regular weekend Masses with Fr. Nichols Monday, Oct. 23rd— 7 pm—Fr. Nick Vaskov Tuesday, Oct. 24th—7 pm—Fr. Jack Walsh Wednesday, Oct. 25th—7 pm—Fr. Don Ware, C.P. Thursday, Oct. 26th—7 pm—Fr. Nichols Friday, Oct. 27th—8 pm—Fr. Albie Schempp Saturday (Closing) Oct. 28th—4 pm— Fr. Nichols

GOOD EXPERIENCE We had twenty vehicles (bicycles, motorcycles, etc. ) for our annual blessing of bicycles last Sunday afternoon here at St. Stanislaus. Since bicycling is such an important and growing phenomenon here in the city, it is a wonderful practice to ask God’s blessing on the vehicles and their riders and to be reminded of the need for safety for themselves and concern for the public.

CHRISTMAS TREE RAFFLE It has been suggested by many to have the famous Christmas Tree Raffle. So...if you could please donate gift certificates, lottery tickets, or even monetary donations to help fill this tree with gifts, it would be much appreciated. The rectory office will be glad to receive your donations. The drawing would be held in time for Christmas, December 17th after the 11 AM Mass.

PATRON SAINTS OF THE BLIND Saint Dunstan is associated with work for the blind because of an institution established during World War I at Saint Dunstan’s House, London, for the welfare of blinded soldiers and later, civilians. Saint Odilia, in a more inspirational (and imaginative) vein, is said to have been born blind and abandoned by her family. Raised in an Alsace convent, her sight was miraculously restored when she was baptized as a twelve-year-old. She became a Benedictine abbess and died in 720. Saint Raphael, one of the three archangels mentioned by name in the Bible, is another patron for the blind. The Book of Tobit tells the story of his miraculous intercessions. It was Raphael’s instructions that Tobit’s son followed in restoring his father’s sight (Tobit 11:7-14). Saint Lucy’s patronage of the blind comes in part from her name, which derives from lux, Latin for light. Hence the ill-advised custom of girls processing with candles on their heads, bringing light. Tradition has it Saint Lucy’s persecutors put out her eyes, which makes her patronage of the blind a natural.

ALL SOULS’ DAY—THURSDAY NOVEMBER 2ND In the liturgical calendar of our Church, November 2nd is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, which is traditionally called All Souls’ Day. At 7 pm on that day we will have a special Mass to remember all buried from St. Stanislaus Church from November 3, 2016 to November 2, 2017. More information will follow.
