    Supreme Knight Speaks at UN

Panelists including Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and recognized international leaders spoke at the United Nations in continuing effortsto help resolve the genocide and related humanitarian crisis in the Middle East and throughout the world.

On Thursday, April 28, 2016, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson spoke at the United Nations as part of a panel dis-cussion sponsored by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See. The panel discussion focused on human rights abuses andthe persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East and throughout the world.

Other speakers at the session included Father Douglas al Bazi, missionary Sister Maria de Guadalupe and Melkite Catholic Archbishop Jean -Clément Jeanbart of Aleppo, Syria. Archbishop Jeanbart will speak on the genocide being waged against his peo-ple and the future of Christianity in the Middle East on Sunday, May 1, at St. Mary ’s Church, 5 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven, Conn. For more information visit the Christians at Risk web site (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/christianRelief/index.html).

The panelists united with the supreme knight in sharing their powerful testimonies and insights of personal experiences re-lating to the atrocities that have occurred in the Middle East.

Now that genocide has been officially declared by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and world organizations as a result ofsuch documentation as the nearly 300 -page report produced by the Knights of Columbus, an appeal to the international communityfor concrete actions needed to help persecuted Christians was echoed by panelists.

    Participation In Social Life Authority

"Human society can be neither well -ordered nor prosperous un-less it has some people invested with legitimate authority to pre-serve its institutions and to devote themselves as far as is neces-sary to work and care for the good of all." - Pope John XXIII PT46

By "authority" one means the quality by virtue of which personsor institutions make laws and give orders to men and expect obe-dience from them.

Every human community needs an authority to govern it. Thefoundation of such authority lies in human nature. It is necessary

for the unity of the state. Its role is to ensure as far as possiblethe common good of the society.

The authority required by the moral order derives from God: "Letevery person be subject to the governing authorities. For there isno authority except from God, and those that exist have beeninstituted by God. Therefore he who resists the authorities resistswhat God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judg-ment." - Rom 13:1 -2; cf. I Pet 2:13 -17

    District Deputy ’ s Message

    Brothers and Sisters,

As I write this month ’s message I am fresh from returning from our State ’s 121 st Convention. It was my absolute honor to beable to represent not only my Council as a Delegate, but our District, the Third New York District, as your District Deputy. As youmay know, our State Officers are chosen and elected at the Convention, and as far as that is concerned, it was uneventful, as this iswhat we call an “off year ”, meaning all of the Officers are returning from last year. However, that does not mean that the Conventionwas uneventful. It was full of information from around the State, and it is truly inspiring to hear about (and for me to be able to bragabout) all of the good work that our Order is doing. Not just at the State level, but by all of the individual Councils around the State. So many Awards were given out for all of the good works that Councils are doing. And we are doing many things in our District thatshould also be recognized, if we would only fill out the forms and send them into the State Office to let them know.

The Board of District Deputies Fundraiser held on April 16 th was a great success. I must say it was fun to get involved andget my hands dirty doing a fundraiser again. And it was good to see all of the DD ’s working together to raise money for a couple ofgreat causes. We were able to raise enough money to donate $1,000 to the Chapter F.A.C. program, and $2,000 to the ChapterCharity Drive Sunrise Fund direct donations. I want to give a special thank you to the Wardens that showed up to help, from our Dis-trict John Sommers, Bill Gonzalez & Nick Drake, and from the 2 nd District Bill Christiansen. Also to Phil Graniello from 725 who was

my right-hand man for this event. And to Bill Fontaine, the Grand Knight from Patchogue Council, and all the members of 725 whowere very generous in their support, both in coming to the event, and the use of Council items. Also to Fr. Benet from Our Lady of

Mt. Carmel who let us use the Parish Center. The Board of DD ’S also voted to donate $400 to OLMC for the use of the Hall.

I will be visiting all of the Councils in the District, as I always do each month, in May. However, I will not be at your Junemeetings, as that is your Election meeting. So the May meeting will be my last official visit to your Council as your District Deputy forthe 2015 -2016 Columbian Year. So I hope that all of the Councils are preparing for the June elections. Nominating Committeesshould have been selected and they should be hard at work filling all of the Officers slots that may be opening up. I know they will alldo a great job! As always, if there is anything that I can do to assist anyone in any way possible, please do not hesitate to call me.
