    GRAND KNIGHT ’ S MESSAGE

    Brothers,

I cannot believe that this is my last message. We did so manythings this year and the time flew by. May was another busy month. We had our Night at the Races on May 6th. We had about 35 peopleattended that night, and ran 6 exciting races which all the proceedsare going to the Sunrise Fund.

May 18th was our Birthright social. We had 95 people attendthat night. I want to give a huge thanks to Benny and Joe for cookinga delicious meal that night. And to the ladies, who run this event onour behalf. They did an outstanding job packing the hall andproviding us with their delicious deserts.

Don ’ t forget June 1st is our elections for the new slate ofofficers. I would like to thank all my officers for supporting me in all

the events that we did this year. This year was very successful and ifit weren ’ t for all of you and the support of our members it wouldn ’ thave been possible. I would also like to thank the slate of officers forcoming forward next year to lead our council for another great year.

I would like to congratulate Tomas D ’ Achille, he made his 1stdegree on May 16th.

The Chapter Charity Ball is June 26th at the Watermill inSmithtown. We need to show our support for the Chapter. If you wantto go to the Charity Ball please let me or Paul Basileo know.

    Hope to see everyone soon.

    Respectfully yours,

    VIVAT JESUS

    JUNE Birthdays

Special Olympics featured “ unified ” games held on KofC field in Rome

The Knights of Columbus hosted a unique Special Olympics event, May 20 -22, at the Pius XI Field in Rome that featured eight teams composed ofplayers with and without intellectual disabilities. Part of the Special Olympics European Football Week, the event was designed to break down barri-ers and offer a model for how communities can include people with intellectual disabilities.

Representing the Knights of Columbus at the games was Deputy Supreme Knight Logan Ludwig. The tournament, co -sponsored by the Knights andthe Italian Football Association, included four teams from Italy and one team each from France, Lithuania, Poland and Hungary. Players ranged inage from 18 to 30. “ The Knights of Columbus has been a supporter of Special Olympics since the very first games were held nearly half a century ago. Both in the Unit-ed States and abroad, we have been strong supporters of these games and their clear message of human dignity, ” said Supreme Knight Carl Ander-son. “ It is particularly fitting that this year Special Olympics games will be held on our fields in Rome, since these fields have been at the service of thepeople of Rome and their children for nearly a century. ” “ The Knights of Columbus have been generously supporting Special Olympics athletes not just in the USA, ” said Tim Shriver, chairman of SpecialOlympics International, who cited the Knights for their work “ across Italy, Europe and the rest of the world. ”

The K of C has been a partner of Special Olympics since the first games were held in 1968, with Knights supporting the organization at the local, national and international levels. The Knights donated $1.4 million to the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles last year and $1 million tosupport the World Games in Ireland in 2003. The Knights of Columbus has run athletic fields in Rome since the 1920s, when theorganization was asked to do so by Pope Benedict XV.

The Chaplain ’ s Corner The Theological Virtues

    Charity

Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God

above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves

    for the love of God.

Jesus makes charity the new commandment. By loving

his own "to the end," he makes manifest the Father's love which

he receives. By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love

of Jesus which they themselves receive. Whence Jesus says:

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my

love." And again: "This is my commandment, that you love one

another as I have loved you."

Fruit of the Spirit and fullness of the Law, charity keeps

the commandments of God and his Christ: "Abide in my love. If

you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love."

Christ died out of love for us, while we were still

"enemies." The Lord asks us to love as he does, even our ene-

mies, to make ourselves the neighbor of those farthest away, and

to love children and the poor as Christ himself.- from The Catechism of The Catholic Church, www.KofC.org

    District Deputy ’ s Message

    Brothers and Sisters,

June is here and with it, finally, hopefully, eventually, so will be summer! It alsomeans that Council Elections are being held. I would like to thank all of the outgoing Officersfor a job well done, and congratulate all of the incoming Officers as well. I know that you willall do a terrific job!

Before the end of the Columbian Year, don ’ t forget that there are a few important forms that need to be com-pleted so that your Council gets all the credit that it deserves for all of the hard work that you have been doing all year! This includes the RSVP Form, the “ Food for Families ” form, and of course the Columbian Award form, or SP7. If youhaven ’ t yet sent in these forms, please do so now!

Before I end my message for this edition of the Newsletter, I want you all to know how overwhelmed I am bythe amount of support that I have received from my Brother Knights and Sister Columbiettes these past few months. Ithas been a very difficult time for me and my family, and I want you all to know that the cards, the flowers, the caringkind words and the prayers have meant more to me and my wife Jessica than you will ever know. As many of you mayrecall, my mother, Joan, passed away last November very suddenly and unexpectedly. This left my Father, Phil, homealone in the house that he had shared with her for over 52 years. My Father was ill, but was determined to remain in hishome. My brothers and sister and I did what we could to make him as comfortable and happy as possible. But I knewthat it was not possible. He would never be happy again without my Mother. She was the most important thing to him,and no matter how we tried, life had lost all meaning for him. My Father passed away on May 16 th, just 6 days shy ofwhat would have been their 62 nd Wedding Anniversary.

The Doctors said it was the cancer, but we know better. So we take solace in the thought that they are reunitedagain, to continue their journey together with a never -ending love. Again, thank you all so much.
