One bright, beautiful Sunday morn-ing, everyone in tiny Smithvillewakes up early and goes to theirlocal church. Before the servicestarts, the townspeople sit in theirpews and talk about their lives, theirfamilies, etc.Suddenly, at the altar, Satan ap-pears!! Everyone starts screamingand running for the front entrance, trampling each other in their deter-mined efforts to get away from EvilIncarnate.Soon, everyone is evacuated fromthe church except for one man, whosits calmly in his pew, seeminglyoblivious to the fact that God's ulti-mate enemy is in his presence. Thisconfuses Satan a bit.Satan walks up to the man and says,"Hey, don't you know who I am?"The man says, "Yep, I sure do."Satan says, "Well, aren't you afraidof me?"The man says, "Nope, I sure ain't."Satan, perturbed, asks, "And whyaren't you afraid of me?""Well, I've been married to yoursister for 25 years."

Our Open-Air presentation of the mu-sical “Oklahoma” will be staged from3rd to 7th June 2010. This is a uniqueevent which has never been attemptedin Ireland before and may never berepeated. Against the background ofthe recession which daily threatens todefeat our spirits, the people herehave come together to be creative, tohave fun and to celebrate communityspirit.
The performance takes place on thewide open spaces of our local GAAfield, featuring a cast of almost onehundred adults, together with childrenfrom the schools. The principal char-acters, mounted on actual horses andcarriages as they perform their roles, and the entire stadium, transformedinto an appropriate setting, will trans-port the audience back in time. Therewill be numerous side attractions anddisplays including vintage machineryand livestock.
On the Saturday 5th June, there’s aGala Western Dress Night, when thewhole audience is invited to come tothe show dressed in western style. The Festival Club will also be openon each night of the show. Prepara-tions are ongoing since before Christ-mas under producer Peter Alley. Aveteran of St Oliver’s Musical Socie-ty, Dundrum, he was responsible forthe first horse on stage in an“Oklahoma” nearly thirty years ago.Above all he promises us a real new“Oklahoma”, full of attractions anddrama, and huge surprises never seenbefore. Highly professional standardsof production are maintained through-out and the level of participation andthe collective sense of excitementmake us confident that this show willbe truly memorable. The Pride of Place Competition for2010 is currently underway withNorth Tipperary County Councilnominating two areas for the all-is-land competition this year. Upper-church-Drombane and DistrictDevelopment Association and theTerryglass Arts Festival are the twoentries for North Tipperary this yearand their efforts in trying to achievea prestigious Pride of Place awardare fully supported by North Tipper-ary County Council. Upperchurchhave been nominated in the Popula-tion Category of 1,000 – 2,000 peo-ple and Terryglass are nominated inthe Community Arts Initiative Cate-gory.
Pride of Place is an all-island com-petition, which was first piloted inthe summer of 2003 and is directedtowards recognising the improve-ments of local communities to createcivic pride in their area. The compe-tition encourages people to cometogether to enjoy all that is goodabout their area as well as change orimprove certain aspects of theircommunity. It differs from othersimilar projects in that they specifi-cally recognise the involvement ofthe local community in all aspects ofrural and urban regeneration includ-ing, promoting social cohesion, in-volvement in planning, thepromotion of heritage and environ-mental awareness.
Upperchurch-Drombane andDistrict Development Association
Upperchurch-Drombane is a dis-persed rural parish of 120 sq km's inthe scenic foothills to the east of theSlieve Felim area in North Tipperarycomprising of three villages: Upper-church; Drombane; and Milestone. The Upperchurch-Drombane & Dis-trict Development Association wasfounded in 1991 and since its incep-tion it has been involved in manyprojects aimed at improving thequality of life of its residents withparticular emphasis on the elderlyand youth of the area. Projects ofnote include: Community Homes forthe Elderly; Uplands IT Centre; Ru-ral Transport Scheme; installation ofseveral ‘National Looped Walks’;Walking Festival Weekend;Water/Sewerage Scheme; FAS/RSSemployment projects; Tidy Towns;and installation of scenic viewingpoints. Their most recent project hasbeen the completion of a moderncrèche facility in Upperchurch vil-lage for up to 70 children which in-volved almost ten years of dedicatedwork from initial planning to the of-ficial opening.
Terryglass Arts Festival
In 1999, North Tipperary CountyCouncil Arts Office issued a requestfor a committee in North Tipperaryto develop a festival which would besupported and grant funded by theCo. Council, and they were delight-ed when members of the Terryglasscommunity came to them and said“we’re here to run a festival.” Littledid they know how much theywould grow and that the festivalwould be such a huge success yearon year. The Terryglass Arts Festivalis a multi disciplinary festival thatcelebrates and promotes the artisticcreativity of all cultures, serving asthe foundation of yearround community efforts to nurtureparticipation in the arts. They en-courage the organic evolvement andgrowth of the festival and aspire tomake a significant investment in thefuture of the community. The festi-val takes place annually in August inthe village of Terryglass located onthe shores of Lough Derg and theprogramme includes visual arts, dance, theatre, music, poetry, filmand storytelling.

Daynuv has partnered withGiftedKids.ie to pilot a new ICT initia-tive aimed at supporting a group of ex-ceptionally able students in GaelscoilEoghain Uí Thuairisc Carlow. The pi-lot, overseen and developed in conjuc-tion with Bríd Uí Mhaoluala, LearningSupport Teacher with Carlow Gaelscoilis the first of its kind in Ireland to use3D modelling software and program-ming tools to teach part of the primaryschool curriculum in a learning supportsetting.
Daynuv built a private andsecure GiftedKids.ie‘island’ on their 3D grid. This deserted island wasquickly peopled with ava-tars and architectural struc-tures created by a group offive Gaelscoil students under the guid-ance of their teacher Brid Uí Mhaoluala. After some initial training the studentsquickly got to grips with the softwareand soon built a 3D world based anumber of local structures includinghigh crosses such as the Castledermotcrosses. The students can access the is-land both at home and at school and caninteract via their avatars with the virtualenvironment and with each other.
“With expertise in 3D modelling soft-ware and programming tools for chil-dren, Daynuv has created an engagingand empowering learning environment, particularly for children with exception-al ability and high visual spatial aware-ness”, said Margaret Keane ofGiftedkids.ie.
Giftedkids.ie is a support website forparents and educators of “exceptionallyable” and “twice exceptional” (giftedbut with learning difficulties) childrenin Ireland. “We would like to thankBrid Uí Mhaoluala and the staff ofGaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc in par-
ticular forembracingthis newtechnologyso readily and recognising its potentialuse for these often overlooked group ofstudents”.
Brid Uí Mhaoluala has been teachingsmall groups of exceptionally able chil-dren for the past number of years at theschool and was interested in using thistype of technology to provide enrich-
ment material for hercurrent group of stu-dents.
“We worked theDaynuv project for twoperiods a week inschool, but the children
continued to work on the project athome. It was great that they could workon what they wanted and on somethingtruly challenging”, said Uí Mhaoluala.“I am not a techno-wizard, I don’t evenhave an ECDL, so by taking this on, Ifelt I would be able to say to any teach-er that if I could do it, anyone could.”
Daynuv specialises in the developmentof virtual worlds for immersive educa-tion and has received seed funding fromSocial Entrepreneurs Ireland to developapplications for children with specialneeds. “From our experience we’ve dis-covered that 3D learning software al-lows exceptionally able children tounlock the abilities which can go unno-ticed in a traditional learning environ-ment”, said James Corbett of Daynuv.“Partnering with GiftedKids.ie was theideal way for us to bring this enablingtechnology to those who need it most”.

The biological efficiency of produc-ing beef from the suckler herd is rel-atively low, with a large maternalcost to production. The suckler cowaccounts for about half of the annualfeed costs in suckler calf-to-beefsystems. Some individual animalsare more efficient, eating less for thesame output. Scientists at TeagascAnimal and Grassland Research andInnovation Centre, Grange are nowlooking at new ways to identify themost efficient animals and build abeef breeding programme around it.
Researchers are now investigatingResidual Feed Intake (RFI) as ameasure of feed efficiency that isgenetically independent of growthand body size. It is defined as thedifference between an animal’s actu-al feed intake and what its predicted
feed intake should be, based on bod-yweight and level of performance.
“Efficient animals eat less than ex-pected and have a negative or lowerRFI value. Whereas, inefficient ani-mals eat more than expected andhave a positive or higher RFI. Dif-ferences among individual animalshave long been recognised but littleis known about the causes of thisvariation in efficiency of energy uti-lisation by cattle,” explains Dr MarkMcGee, Teagasc Animal and Grass-land Research and Innovation Cen-tre, Grange.
Teagasc and UCD are currentlyjointly researching the links betweenRFI and genetic or biochemicalmarkers of the trait. This collabora-tive project is examining biological
control of RFI in cattle with a viewto identifying some more easilymeasured indicators of the trait. Re-sults to date show significant differ-ences between efficient and nonefficient animals in the expression ofgenes controlling the synthesis ofcellular energy. “This work couldhelp develop an early cost effectiveidentification of genetically superioranimals for feed efficiency,” con-cluded Dr McGee.

* Food and Drinks Sector Criti-cal to Future of The Irish Economy * €140m awarded through theFood Institutional Research Meas-ure since 2000
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheriesand Food, Brendan Smith TD, lastweek emphasised the importance ofthe Irish agrifood sector "especially inthe present economic climate". Theindustry is Ireland's most importantindigenous sector, with 800 companiesemploying over 45,000 people andproducing over a third of our net ex-port earnings from the primary andmanufacturing sectors.
The Minister was in Cork to launchthe UCC/Teagasc Strategic Alliance inFood Research and described collabo-ration between industry and academiaas "vitally important to the growth ofthe industry into the future". MinisterSmith said that the importance of thefood and drinks sector to the futuredevelopment of the Irish economy, which is currently turning the corner, was acknowledged in various recentreports, including "Building Ireland'sSmart Economy - A Framework forSustainable Economic Renewal" andthe Innovation Task Force Report -"Innovation Ireland" - launched inMarch this year, which concluded that
Ireland was ideally positioned to de-velop the agri-food sector.
Minister Smith said that theUCC/Teagasc Alliance, launched to-day, "is a natural progression of long-standing culture of collaborationwhich will represent a more consoli-dated point of contact for the agri-foodindustry, ensuring more streamlinedand effective engagement with thefood sector, both nationally and inter-nationally". The Minister stressed hisDepartment's investment to the re-search system and pointed out that"since 2000, my Department, throughthe Food Research Institutional Meas-ure, has awarded a total of €140 mil-lion to food research projects acrossthe island of Ireland, of which Tea-gasc and UCC have been awardedfunding of €86.5 million".
Minister Smith expressed the confi-dence that "the UCC/Teagasc Alliancewill strengthen the capability of bothInstitutions and ensure that they willmake a significant contribution to cre-ating new scientific knowledge aswell as building on existing knowl-edge across the three thematic areaswhich they will target. The three are-as: Food for health, food science andtechnology; and food business and theconsumer will straddle sectors of stra-tegic importance to Ireland such as
dairy foods, dairy based ingredientsand infant formula, meat and meatpreparations (including marine), bev-erages and prepared consumer foods".
The Minister concluded by saying that,"of particular interest through the re-search programmes is the sustainableextended chain approach from 'farm tofork' which will capture all stages of
the food chain from productionthrough processing and on to consum-er benefits and environmental impact. It is now more important than ever, given the current economic climate, that the profile of Ireland's scientificcapability is raised even further on theglobal stage".
Smith emphasises need for "Creation oflong-term sustainability in Agri-food sector- Irelands most important indigenous sector"

The surprise package of the day waswithout a shadow of a doubt the BoysUnder 10 Gaelic Football team from Ro-screa who faced the might ofPowerstown/Lisronagh. Having won theCounty Finals on numerous occasionsPowerstown/Lisronagh were hot favour-ites to win again, however, the boys from

St.Flannan’s goalkeeper Clodagh Jonesshowed her excellent reflexes when shepulled off a fantastic save near the endand Mairead Teehan was extremely com-manding in her role of sweeper. The leadchanged hands on a couple of occasionswith Cahir emerging victorious on ascoreline of 2-9 to St. Flannan’s 1-9. Nenagh Eire Og CamogieIn stark contrast to last year's spon-sored Dog Walk, there was not acloud to be seen in the sky. An un-seasonable heat wave baked the townof Nenagh on Sunday 23rd Maywhen the supporters, both human andcanine, of the Tipperary Friends ofAnimals gathered in Banba Square totake part in the annual SponsoredDog Walk of about three miles, brav-ing the heat to raise much neededfunds to care for stray and injuredanimals.
It was a very encouraging sight tosee the amount of supporters whocame to take part in the walk, pullingtheir owners in tow. Fr. Jim O'Brienopened the event with a blessing ofthe animals and then everyone head-ed off on the three mile walk. Therewas some concern by the organisersdue the extreme heat and a couple ofthe organisers drove around collect-ing some of the dogs and owners
who were not able to tolerate the heatand brought back to Banba Squarewhere the dogs were patted downwith wet towels and given plenty ofwater. The stalwart band ofwalkers eventually arrived back inthe Square and were given plenty ofrefreshments and there were plentyof water bowls and treats for thedogs. Figures released by SIMI (Society ofthe Irish Motor Industry) show that asof Friday 28th May, new car saleshave surpassed total new car sales forthe whole of 2009 (57,460).
The figures• 57,898 new cars sold this year• 438 more than total amount sold lastyear• 40,933 new cars sold this time lastyear• 41% up on last year
To date there have been 57,898 newcar sales sold this year, 438 more thanthe total amount sold last year. Thistime last year 40,933 new cars weresold.
Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMIputs the milestone down to the suc-cess of scrappage. “At the start of thisyear, we were very cautious about ourexpectations for 2010. While we
knew that scrappage would have theknock on effect of increased sales, wedidn’t expect to be hitting the 57,000mark in May. At the beginning of theyear we predicted 70,000 new carsales for 2010. Now, we are lookingat considerably more. Our proposalslast year estimated that around 10,000scrappage scheme cars would be sold, but we also predicted that one of thereal benefits of scrappage would be tokick-start the demand for new cars.As we had anticipated vehicle distrib-utors and dealers have responded withsuperb offers and not just for scrap-page scheme cars. We can clearly see
emissions are 135g/km as of today, asignificant reduction on last year.
Nolan continued, “Our industry wasone of the first hit in the economicdownturn. We are also one of the firstto see a lift and hopefully this willsoon extend across other sectors.”

- I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost apound. Apparently you have to gothere.
- I have to exercise early in themorning before my brain figures outwhat I'm doing.
- I like long walks, especially whenthey are taken by people who annoyme.
- I have flabby thighs, but fortunatelymy stomach covers them.
- The advantage of exercising everyday is that you die healthier.
- If you are going to try cross-coun-try skiing, start with a small country.

(Continued from previous issue)Why people stay in abusive relationships for along time (or forever), and what they shoulddo when/if they make to decision to leave.
Previous articles have outlined various types ofabuse, and show how they are a degradation ofthe victims, taking their power, and loweringtheir self-esteem. Reasons have been given in theprevious article on why it is important to leave. So why do people remain in relationships wherethe abusive partner refuses to admit beingabusive, or to take steps to stop such behaviour, and refuses to attend therapy?
First of all, they do so because they are afraid ofsetting boundaries. This fear often goes back tochildhood. It may come from a fear of hurtingother people, fear of others being angry, of beingabandoned, and of losing a relationship. Itsfoundation is a lack of self-esteem, being bound, perhaps, by toxic shame. It may also stem fromfear, stress, intimidation, vulnerability andpowerlessness. It may indicate a reluctance toaccept that the relationship has failed, and that thevictim still hopes that it may be salvaged. Forsome victims an abusive environment may benormal because that is what they experienced inchildhood, and so they remain in such anenvironment. In such a case the victim has beenconditioned by their childhood.
Women’s Rural Advocacy Programs, anAmerican organisation, outlines a long list ofwhy women stay in abusive relations, and someof these can be applied to men who choose to livewith an abusive partner. WRAP sees three type ofreason - situational factors, emotional factors, and personal beliefs, a powerful combination thatmakes it so difficult to leave an abusiverelationship.
Under the heading of situational factors WRAPlists a whole range of fears. There is the fear ofphysical danger to the person or the children ifthey try to leave, fear of being hunted down, fearof emotional damage to the children, fear oflosing custody of the children, fear of beinginvolved in the courts, fear of the unknown, fearof making formidable life changes, and fear ofthe abuser calling to the workplace. Othersituational reasons for staying in an abusiverelationship are economic dependence, lack ofalternative housing, social isolation, lack ofunderstanding from family, friends, police, church, etc., ties to the community (e.g. children
in a particular school, friends, neighbours etc.),family pressure and inability to use resources.
The above reasons are very debilitating. To thesemay be added emotional reasons. These includeloyalty to the abusive partner, pity, wanting tohelp, fears for his/her mental health, denial, love, guilt, shame, unfounded optimism that the abuserwill change, false hope, a sense of responsibility, insecurity, poor self-esteem, lack of emotionalsupport and sheer exhaustion.
Then there are personal beliefs that hold victimsin abusive relationships. There is, for example, the belief that children need both parents, religious beliefs, sense of duty, sense ofresponsibility, belief that marriage is forever, being used to violence and seeing it as normal, and cultural beliefs. There is also the question offearing a loss of love, but the alternative proposedby Patricia Evans is more frightening - loss of self.
Connie Fourré believes that a primary reason forremaining in abusive relationships is the failureof victims to mourn and accept their losses.Mourning is always difficult, but it is especiallydifficult in separation because feelings about apartner are so mixed.
Of course, there is a risk in leaving. Research hasshown that on average the abuser leaves seventimes before making the final break. It takescourage to leave. Some cannot do so. For othersthe pain gradually becomes too much, and after along time it becomes less painful to leave than tostay. Apart from the emotional and psychologicalimpact of leaving, there are practicalities thatshould be followed when the decision to leavehas been made. Very often the victim will decideto leave during the third stage, mentioned in thefirst article, when the release of violent angerbrings about calm and the appearance of love andwarmth. Despite the calm this is the mostdangerous time because when the abuser learnsof the victim’s decision to leave his/her fury willbe aroused to an even greater level.
