Morse Code- a series of dots and dashes used to communicate between humans. 1876 Telephone- Alexander Graham Bell Telephones exchanges provide the backbone of Internet connections today. 1957 USSR launches Sputnik, first artificial earth satellite. 1986Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) designed to enhance Usenet news performance over TCP/IP.

1987The number of hosts on the Internet exceeds 20,000. Cisco ships its first router.

1989World.std.com becomes the first commercial provider of dial-up access to the Internet.

1990Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, develops HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

2003Myspace, Skype and the Safari Web browser debut.

2004Facebook goes online and the era of social networking begins. Mozilla unveils the Mozilla Firefox browser.
