1858-1866- The Transatlantic cable

was created

1957- USSR launches Sputnik

1969- ARPANET commissioned for

research into networking

1971- Invention of E-mail

1972 - First public demo of

ARPANET

1973ARPANET has its 1st

international connections

1976- Networking is exposed to many as Queen Elizabeth II

sends out an e-mail

1977- THEORYNET provides e-

mail to over 100 comp. sci. researchers

1981 - BITNET is born (Because

It's Time Network)

1982 - Transmission Internet

Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) established

1984 - Domain Name Server

(DNS) is introduced

1988- Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

is developed.

1990 - ARPANET ceases to

exist

1991- Gopher was released

by Paul Lindner and Mark P. McCahill

1991 - The World Wide Web (WWW) is released by

CERN

1992 - "Surfing the Internet"

is coined by Jean Armour Polly

1993 - Netscape is developed one of the most popular

browsers to date.

1995 - Dial-up Systems begin

to provide internet access

1996 - Microsoft starts

supplying their own web browser

1999 - 802.11b (Wi-fi)

becomes standardized

2010- 4G Networks launch in the

U.S. providing high speed internet connections
