U.S. History 19th Century Timeline
1861 18631862
Families took advantage of the Homestead Act and moved West. These families became known as homesteaders
Homestead Act passed in 1862. Congress offered 160 acres of land for families
African Americans known as “Exodusters” move west from the deep south in conclusion to the Homestead Act.
Made homes called soddy homes out of sod. Cool in summer and warm in winter
1864 18661865
Sand Creek Massacre occurs in the great plains. Killed a tribe of Indians.
Andrew Carnegie is an immigrant that made the Carnegie Steel Company that made nearly all of the worlds steel near that time
Buffalo Soldiers were names given to the black regiments of the U.S. Calvary by Indians.

Oliver Kelly started the Patrons of Husbandry for
farmers.
Tammy Hall in New York City overcharged taxpayers for projects throughout the city so they could gain some profit.
The Transcontinental Railroad is 1,776 miles
railroad line built across the western half of the United States of AmericaAlso know as a Grange. It
provides isolated farmers with a social outlet and an educational forum.

Patronage was when presidents complained about the problem of giving government jobs to people who had helped a candidate get elected. Know as spoils system in Andrew Jacksons administration.
Urbanization sudden growth in population of large cities because people moved there to live more inexpensively
Credit Mobilier was a scandal which the Union Pacific Railway sold stock to politicians in return for favors.

George Armstrong was a highly effective commander in first battle of bull run and was promoted. All of his men including him was killed in the battle of littlebig horn.
The Gilded Age Era was a post civil war time that had rapid growth in the economy and population. One of biggest jumps in American History.
Poll tax was an annual tax that had to be paid
in order to vote
The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They mandated racial segregation in all public facilities in Southern states of the former Confederacy
Grandfather clause stated that even if a man fails the literacy test or could not afford the poll tax, they can still vote if father or grandfather is eligible to vote

Exodusters were names given to African Americans who migrated from states along Mississippi River to Kansas (Exodus of 1879) Sitting Bull was a holy man
who led his people as a tribal chief during the years of resistance to US government policies. Was in battle of littlebig horn. He surrendered and was later shot in the side of the head
Thomas Edison perfected the incandescent light bulb, and later invented an entire system for producing and distributing electrical power

immigration for 10 years passing Chinese
Exclusion Act.
Mugwumps were republican political activists who bolted from US republican party by supporting Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in presidential election 1884

The interstate commerce commission’s original purpose was to regulate railroads to ensure fair rates, eliminate rate discrimination, and regulate other aspects of common carriers, including interstate bus lines and telephone companies
Dawes Act authorized the president to survey Indian land and divide it into allotments for individual Indians

Graft- Illegal use of political influence for
personal gain
US cavalry went to disarm Lakota in Wounded Knee and chief would not give up rifle. Shots fired, situation escalated, cavalry started killing indiscriminately.

Booker T. Washington was an African-American educator, author, orator, and advisor to Republican presidents. He was the dominant leader in the African-American community in the United States from 1890 to 1915.
Populist party urged graduated income tax, secret ballot, direct senator election known as Ohama Platform. It won in an eight hour day.

Pullman Strike was a strike between labor unions and U.S. Railways when wages were cut and workdays lengthened. Strikers damaged property. Labor day established
Wealthy William Randolph Hearst owned multiple major newspapers and printed exaggerated tales of scandals, cruelty, hypnotism, and conquest of Mars to attract readers.
William McKinley was the nominee for President in 1896. Supported the gold system. Won presidency as the 25th president.
Vaudeville theater that has performances like song, dance, juggling, comedy for entertainment.
