March 4 - 10, 2010

Kevin Harvick can be a free man at the end ofthe 2010 season if he so chooses.

That might be a tough call. Harvick, who hasnever driven in the Sprint Cup Series (or its prede-cessors) for anyone other than Richard Childress, has the right to leavethe historic team.

As of Harvick’s second-place finish in the Auto Club 500,he is leading the point standings, and his teammate, Clint

Bowyer, ranks second. Harvickwon the Budweiser Shootout inDaytona. If his success contin-ues, he might not be inclined toleave RCR.

Though wisely reluctant totalk about it, Harvick relishesthe options he will have.

“I’m going to do my job, andthat’s to drive the car and the restof it,” he said in Fontana, Calif.“There are so many unknowns

this year. What’s going to happen when we switch to thespoiler? I think that’s going to throw a whole monkey wrenchin there.”

NASCAR officials are expected to replace the wings on thebacks of cars with spoilers, most likely in late March.

The results of the first two races suggest that the enginesbuilt in a consortium between Childress and EGR (EarnhardtGanassi Racing) are the most powerful in the sport. JamieMcMurray won the Daytona 500 with such power under thehood, and Harvick and Jeff Burton from RCR finished secondand third, respectively, in Fontana.

Harvick downplayed the engine angle and preferred to talkinstead about the spoiler.

“You’re either going to be really happy or really sad,” hesaid, “because it’s going to be really hard to turn it around(i.e., make a change) 10 races into the season.”

Still, it’s so far, so good, for Harvick, who didn’t win anofficial race in 2009 and failed to make the Chase for the SprintCup.

And, yes, he’s happy with the power under the hood of hisNo. 29, Shell-sponsored Impala.

PAYMENTS ARE BASED W.A.C.

“They (the engines) are really reliable, they make a lot of power and they’re con-stantly pushing forward,” said Harvick. “In our competition meetings, we honestlydon’t even talk about engines anymore because they’re just such a non-factor for us.They just keep clicking along and do a really good job.”

In short, Harvick’s current situation might be a tough one to leave.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My father is 88 and quite head-

strong. He has taken a daily dose of mineral oil for years

and years. He says it keeps him regular. Should he con-

tinue to do this? Could it harm him? — K.H.

Mineral Oil Won’tKeep You Regular

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

ANSWER: Mineral oil was once a favorite treatment forconstipation and for its prevention. It’s not a great way tocombat either. It interferes with the absorption of vitaminsA, D, E and K, and it can block absorption of other nutri-ents. He should take it before eating or before taking anymedicines or vitamins. If it goes down the wrong way —into the lungs rather than the stomach — it causes pneu-monia.

Your dad is 88. I take it he is in reasonable health. He’sbeen taking mineral oil for years and years without facingany consequences. I would mention tohim that this isn’t a good idea. However,he is at an age when he can do mostanything he wants. If he objects, Iwouldn’t push matters too hard.

The booklet on constipation and itstreatment deals with this common prob-lem in depth. Readers can order a copyby writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 504W,Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.Enclose a check or money order (nocash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with therecipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: If a person

is all alone and choking from something

caught in the throat, this person can-

not perform the Heimlich maneuver on

himself. Would it be good for that per-

son to insert a finger into the back of

the throat to provoke regurgitations and

clear the airway? — C.

ANSWER: If food or anything elsegets caught in the windpipe (the tra-chea), a solo person can dislodge it bybending over a sturdy chair so the ab-domen, just above the navel

(bellybutton),rests on thetop of thechair. A

kitchen chair with a wooden back is a good choice. Thenthe person pushes the abdomen with an inward and slightlyupward thrust against the top of the chair. It should gener-ate a burst of air through the windpipe to dislodge what-ever is stuck there. Repeat the thrust as many times asnecessary. If a chair is unavailable, then make a fist withone hand and cover it with the other hand. Put the fist inthe same location, above the navel, and make a forcefulinward and upward thrust. Repeat as needed.

The forced vomiting idea isn’t a good one. Vomited ma-terial leaves the stomach and enters the mouth throughthe esophagus. It doesn’t unblock the trachea.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters,

but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Read-ers may write him or request an order form of available health news-letters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Treating a Cut PawDEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Bart” came

inside from being in the backyard today and waslimping a bit. I checked his paw, and it looks likehe has a small cut on one of the pads. I’m not surefrom where, but there is still a bit of ice and snowaround the edges of the yard. I disinfected the cut,but I’m not sure what to do next — a Band-Aid,perhaps? — Worried in Burlington, Vt.

DEAR WORRIED: A light gauze bandage, wrapped around the paw and taped in place, willprotect Bart’s paw while the cut heals. Don’t wrapor tape so tightly that the circulation to the paw isaffected — you just want to cover the cut.

Check the bandage daily and replace when itbecomes damp or dirty (which, if Bart likes go-ing outside, may be daily). If your dog licks ortries to chew away the bandage, pick up a cone-style or Elizabethan-style protective collar at thepet store, or from Bart’s veterinarian.

If Bart’s limp does not improve within aboutthree days or the cut does not appear to be heal-ing, take him to the vet to have the injury evalu-ated. Likewise if his paw becomes swollen.

Meantime, head outside and try to get rid ofsharp-looking ice patches, if possible. Remove anydebris from Bart’s run area and pick up any dogfeces to reduce the chance of infection in his in-jured paw (or if he injures his footpads again forwhatever reason).
