Q: How has Lisa Niemi been doing since the deathof her husband, Patrick Swayze? — Carol C.,Mansfield, Ohio

A: In recent weeks, the actress/dancer has madeher first public appearances since Patrick’s death andadmits that dealing with his passing is “an animal allit’s own.”

“The most courageous thought that I had was thatI wanted to, at some point, feel like I had the courageto go on and have a good life,” Lisa said. “And in thefirst few days (after his death), I felt like that wouldalmost be a betrayal. But it’s a brutal truth that youhave to go on without that person. I’ve spent two thirdsof my life with him. And part of me believes that Iwill see him again. I’m just going to have to go onuntil then.”

• • •Q: I rented

“The Proposal”over the weekendand loved it. I es-pecially loved thescenery (RyanReynolds’ abs not-w i ths tand ing) .Where did theyfilm the movie? —Annie J., Sacra-mento, Calif.

A: I spoke withardent animallover and all-

around great person Betty White recently, and I askedher about her experience filming the movie. She re-vealed to me: “We had such a good time. With Sandra

Betty White

(Bullock) and Ryan (Reynolds) andthe director Anne Fletcher, it waslike going to a party every day. Wefilmed on the Massachusetts coast,up in Rockport and Gloucester. Itdoubled for Alaska, and I thought itdid a wonderful job.”

• • •Q: I loved the drama series

“Southland” and was very upset tohear it had been canceled. Is thereany hope that NBC will bring itback? — Ginger F., via e-mail

A: “Southland” will be back, butnot on NBC. TNT recently an-nounced that it has picked up theseries and will air all 13 episodes —including the six-episode seasontwo, which did not get the chance toair on NBC. TNT is the perfect placefor the gritty drama of “Southland,”following in the footsteps of “Sav-ing Grace” and “The Closer.”

It has not been decided whetherthe network will air more episodesafter the initial 13-episode run. Arepresentative for TNT told me:“TNT will evaluate the performanceof ‘Southland’ before decidingwhether to order more episodes.”For the near future, you can catch“Southland” on TNT Tuesdays at 10p.m. (ET/PT), beginning with thefirst episode of the series on Jan. 12.

Don’t Forget Fido During HolidaysBy Sam Mazzotta

It’s that time of year again. The holidays aremoving into full swing as we prepare for Thanks-giving, with Christmas and New Year’s approach-ing fast. And amid all the bustle, it’s important toremember our pets and keep them safe.

Melanie Monteiro, the author of “The Safe DogHandbook: A Complete Guide to Protecting YourPooch, Indoors and Out” (Quarry Books) offerssome important tips to keep dogs — and otherpets — safe this holiday season and throughoutthe year.

• Poisoning: Ingesting chocolate or sweets thatcontain ingredients like raisins or xylitol (an arti-ficial sweetener) can cause severe health compli-cations and possibly death.

• Choking: Small decorations, candy wrappers, holiday lights and wrapping papers are among theitems that a pet can ingest and possibly choke on.

• “Bolting”: A pet can run away when alarmed, particularly at loud noises or when surrounded byunfamiliar people. A pet may run outside as you

open the door, or may escape unnoticed whileyou’re entertaining.

• Costumes: Antlers on a pup are cute, but makesure they aren’t hurting it and that no small partscan fall off or be chewed off and ingested. Pet cos-tumes shouldn’t restrict movement or have elasticbands, and should allow the pet to eat, drink andeliminate when needed.

Throughout the season, make time for your pet. It’s easy for extra walks and play time to fall bythe wayside as relatives and friends filter through.Your pet will adjust more easily to the stresses ofthe holidays if its regular schedule is maintained.

Q: My husband went to add dishwashersoap to the dishwasher yesterday morning, but instead of soap he accidentally putZep commercial drain care into the soapdish — and turned it on! Now I’m afraid touse either the dishwasher, or any of thedishes or silverware that came out of it.What should I do? — Alice S., via e-mail

A: Check the drain cleaner bottle’s label

for either directions on cleanup of thechemical, or the manufacturer’s phone

number. Zep also has a Web site atwww.zep.com, where you can find

information on that drain cleaner in theProducts section under “General

Maintenance,” as well as a Contact Ussection.

My instinct tells me that — if it’shousehold-grade drain cleaner — running

the dishwasher through its full cycle several

Dishwasher PhobiaBy Samantha Mazzotta

times while empty should clear it, andwashing and drying the affected dishes andsilverware with soap and water a few timesshould clear any residual drain cleaner.Wear rubber gloves while washing them, and keep the kitchen well-ventilated whilethe dishwasher is running.

However, you don’t have to do this ifyou’re uncomfortable. Like you, I’m a bigfan of making absolutely sure thedishwasher and dishes are safe. That’s whyI would recommend contacting thecompany directly, either by calling thenumber on the label of the bottle, orcontacting Zep through its Web site. If youdon’t get a satisfactory or timely answer, contact a plumber, who can either guideyou through a cleanup process, or cancome over to assess the situation andprovide a solution that you can live with.

HOME TIP: For best results, run yourkitchen’s hot-water tap for a few seconds

before starting the dishwasher to make surethe first water fill is hot.

When Robby Gordon was asked if he hadany advice to give Tony Stewart about beingboth a driver and owner, Gordon said, “Be care-ful what you wish for. You might just get it.”

Gordon, how-ever, was kidding.

“You know, it’s a chore to be the driver and theowner,” he says. “At the same time, provided you hirethe right people and they do their job, and follow throughwith it and take ownership, it’s not that big a deal. It’sjust a case where you have to get involved in certainsituations.”

It sometimes seems as if Robby Gordon has an un-wieldy nickname because his name is so often followedby parentheses: “(no relation to Jeff).” But the otherGordon, who has won three times in the NASCAR SprintCup Series himself, is one of America’s more versatileand talented drivers.

Like the “other” Gordon, Robby was born in Califor-nia. Like Tony Stewart, he has twice competed in theIndianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.Unlike Jeff Gordon and Stewart, Robby has won theBaja 1000 three times, and he has competed in recentyears in the Dakar Rally. He has won in Indy cars, stockcars and off-road vehicles. Desert racing also provideda foundation in the careers of Jimmie Johnson and CaseyMears.

Unlike Johnson and Mears, though, Gordon still com-petes in off-road racing’s major events.

In 2005, Gordon became the first American to win astage in the Dakar Rally, and in 1999, he would’ve wonthe Indy 500 had his car had enough fuel to completethe final lap.

In NASCAR, Robby Gordon follows a fiercely inde-pendent path, with more in common with the sport’spioneers than most of his modern-day colleagues. Nodriver-owner has won the championship of NASCAR’spremier series since the late Alan Kulwicki in 1992, andno representative of a single-car team has won it all sincethe late Dale Earnhardt in 1994.

As thoroughly modern as Gordon is, an argument can be made that he sharesmuch with the fierce individualists who built NASCAR, men like Junior Johnson,Bud Moore, Dave Marcis and Junie Donlavey, who owned the first Cup car Gor-don ever drove.

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

“The Vengeance Trilogy Boxed Set” —Revenge movies are a long-established stapleof Asian cinema, but South Korean filmmakerPark Chan-wook has taken the genre to a wholenew level. His “Vengeance Trilogy” is amasterpiece of psychological drama, pathosand ultra-violence that will have you riveted toyour chair, sweating bullets.

The first film, 2002’s “Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance,” tells the story of a deaf mute whoturns to the black market in order to sell hisorgans so he can raise money to get his dyingsister proper medical care. He is brutallyattacked and robbed by the mobsters, so hedevises a scheme to kidnap the daughter ofthe wealthy industrialist whose company laidhim off. A series of mishaps turns the kidnappinginto a tragic event, and the industrialist thenseeks revenge on the mute.

“Old Boy” (2004) is the best of the three andhas become a major cult classic because of its

iconic “hammer battle” — a four-minute-longtracking shot that mimics a retro side-scrollingvideo game — wherein the hero of the story

vanquishes several dozen attackers by using asmall sledge hammer. The story concerns afellow who is kidnapped and held in a concrete

room for 15 years. One day he is released, givena cell phone and has five days to discover the

identity of his captor. Little does he know that

his release is merely another torture beinginflicted upon him.

The final film, “Lady Vengeance” (2005), is themost disturbing — and artistic — of the threefilms. It is artistic in the sense that the film beginsin color (vibrant primary colors) and then is onelong fade to black and white, each scenebeing drained of just a little more color. The plotcenters around a woman who is wrongfullyimprisoned for 13 years for killing a little boy.Throughout her imprisonment, she has deviseda plan to exact revenge on the guilty party. However, what she doesn’t realize is that hertarget holds a deadly and dark secret.

“Hogan’s Heroes: The Komplete Series,Kommandant’s Kollection” — The entire series:

28 discs, a plethora of special features andenough laughs to send you to chortling to The

Cooler with Sgt. Schultz.

“The Golden Age of Television (The CriterionCollection)” — This is an awesome collection ofearly TV’s best dramas: “Marty,” “Patterns,”“Requiem for a Heavyweight,” “Bang the DrumSlowly,” “Days of Wine and Roses” and more, and features the talents of Rod Serling, JohnFrankeheimer, Piper Laurie, Rod Steiger, MickeyRooney and Paul Newman, to name a few.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have burning tonguesyndrome. At times, it is almost unbearable. Theonly thing that helps somewhat is a saltwater mouthrinse. My dentist, my internist and a neurologisthaven’t offered any relief.

Putting Out theFire of Burning

Tongue

I also get sores in my mouth and on my tongue.Any insight? — P.H.

ANSWER: Burning tongue syndrome is alsoknown as burning mouth syndrome because thegums, roof of the mouth and lips also can feel likethey are on fire. It happens mostly, but not exclu-sively, to women after menopause. Although pain-ful and disturbing, it’s not a health threat. No oneknows the exact cause, but it might be that nervesserving the tongue and mouth are malfunctioning.

Let me give you a few home remedies for it:rinsing the mouth with cold apple juice; and com-bining equal parts Benadryl elixir and Kaopectateas a mouthwash. Don’t swallow these rinses, anduse them four times a day. Another remedy is sixdrops of hot pepper sauce (Tabasco sauce) in a

teaspoon of water andswishing it around inthe mouth four timesdaily. It might increasethe burning at first, butafter a day or so itshould lessen it. If itdoesn’t, abandon it.

Don’t eat or drinkspicy or acidic foods orbeverages. Don’t usemouthwashes with al-cohol in them. Changeyour toothpaste brand.Chew sugarless gum.

When burningmouth fails to respondto the above, the medi-cines Klonopin, Elavilor Neurontin mighthelp.

Have your doctors looked for things like drymouth, B vitamin deficiencies, anemia, diabetes, lichen planus, thyroid problems and Sjogren’s syn-drome?

Sores on the tongue and in the mouth are notordinarily a part of burning tongue syndrome. Getto a doctor when the sores are present. You mighthave recurrent canker sores and not burning mouthsyndrome.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please

define claudication? Is there any treatment for it?— R.L.

ANSWER: Claudication is leg pain that comeson with activity and is due to clogged leg arteries.Depending on where the clog is, the pain can befelt in the buttocks, hips, thighs or calves. Themedical name of this condition is peripheral ar-tery (or vascular) disease.

Quite often, pain arises in the calves. Affectedpeople have an uncanny ability to predict how farthey can walk before they have to stop because ofpain. Resting relieves the pain, and walking canthen resume.

Plenty can be done for it. Medicines can some-times keep the pain from developing. Another wayto attack claudication is to open the clogged arterywith a balloon-tipped, slender, pliable tube (cath-eter), just as they do for clogged heart arteries. Orthe same kind of heart artery operation in whichgrafts replace the obstructed artery can be donefor leg arteries.

The booklet on peripheral artery disease explainsthis illness and its treatment. Readers can obtain acopy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 109W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a checkor money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can.with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

“The Goliath Bone”by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins

(Mariner Books, $13.95)By Chris Richcreek

The problem with being a dead author is that yourfan base often doesn’t get the message when yourelease a new book, mainly because your fansthought you were dead.

But death rarely seems to stop artists of all fieldsthese days. And if anyone would know about death— and, more specifically, about killing people — it

would be Mickey Spillane, the creator of hard-boiled pri-vate investigator Mike Hammer.

Many Spillane aficionados might have already stumbledupon “The Goliath Bone,” recently released in paperback. It is the first Mike Hammer novel since 1996’s “BlackAlley,” and it’s based on an extensive outline by Spillanebefore his death in 2006. Fellow writer (and Spillanefriend) Max Allan Collins finished the story.

“The Goliath Bone,” whose title doesn’t exactly shinealong the lines of “I, the Jury” or “Kiss Me, Deadly,” ap-pears to be an ending point for an aging Hammer, who isabout to marry his longtime secretary, Velda. In a storyconceived by Spillane after the events of Sept. 11, Ham-mer faces terrorists and international intrigue in a caseinvolving what the title describes. The ending seems a bitfarfetched, but also contains elements that are vintageHammer.

Collins has indicated that there are some more uncom-pleted Spillane writings, which means “The Goliath Bone”might not be the final book involving Hammer. That’s good

to know, because even Hammer describes himself inthis latest outing as “a notorious old-time private eyehalf the public thinks is already dead.”

Indeed, they did think that. But apparently neitheraging nor death can slow down Mike Hammer.

I look forward to Thanksgiving Day not only for thetraditional extended family gathering and feast at 4o’clock in the afternoon, but also for the annual early-morning coffee klatch with six neighborhood moms. Wetake turns hosting, depending on who isn’t doing the bigturkey dinner for our particular families. So this year, it’smy turn to put on the coffee and come up with a specialbreakfast treat.

I’ll do my favorite updated version of a cheesy-eggdish that I prep the night before and let set in therefrigerator overnight. I’ll sleep easy knowing it will beready to simply pop in the oven and serve with a heapingbowl of fresh fruit on the side when my girlfriends arrive.

If you have a houseful of relatives coming, hang ontothis easy recipe and prepare it for a memorable and

Put it together the night before:

1. Slice one baguette in 1-inch slices and cut thesecond into 1-inch cubes. Set the slices in a buttered 13-by-9-by-2-inch glass baking dish. Sprinkle ham andcheeses over the bread, then scatter cubed bread ontop.

2. Combine beaten eggs, milk, mustard, and salt andpepper, and pour mixture over all, making sure breadsquares are soaked with the mixture.

Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.3. In the morning, remove foil, preheat oven to 350 F

and bake for an hour.Let stand for 10 minutes, then cut into squares to serve.

Serves 8.

“The grandkids are coming!” tip: Show yourgrandchild that orange juice doesn’t have tocome from a cardboard carton at the grocerystore. Since fresh juice oranges are plentiful this timeof year, cut a dozen or so in half crosswise and juicethem together for a zippy taste of “fresh-squeezedOJ” with breakfast.

A Time for GivingThis is the time of year when many of us think about

those who are in need. Of course, we want to help, butthe ability to do so can be limited by our own finan-cial circumstances. Even with limited funds, however, there are ways to help others.

Keep it local. Call the clothing bank and ask whatit needs. A few new shirts or a winter coat for a childcan help a family that’s struggling. Call the food bankin your area and ask what it’s running out of. Add afew things to your own grocery cart, perhaps spend-ing $5 on a weekly basis, and drop them off. Charitiesof all types are feeling the loss of donations, and they’restretched to the limit in the goods and services theyprovide.

If you have the means, see about sponsoring a fam-ily for the holidays. There are privacy issues, and so-cial-service organizations probably can’t give you thenames of the recipients, but chances are you can get alist of specifics a needy family would like to have. The social-service office acts as the middleman and

hands out the goods as the families come in.Unfortunately you need to watch out for the scams

that constantly surface. If you get a call, beware. Any-one can dial your phone and ask for a donation. Getspecifics, like a call-back number, and ask for litera-ture if you haven’t heard of the organization before.Check before you donate.

If you’d rather write a check to a large organiza-tion and let it decide where it should go, there areways you can determine whether your charity dollaris likely to be used on those in need.

Here are two charity survey sites that can help youdecide:

• Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) isa good one. Charities are rated by their efficiency atusing the donated funds. You can browse by category(and sort by rating or location) or get information ona specific one by putting the charity name in the searchbox.

• GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) shows the Form990 of charities. That form will help you determinehow much of your donation will go to advertising andsolicitations for even more donations.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally an-swer reader questions, but will incorporate them into hiscolumn whenever possible. Write to him in care of KingFeatures Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].
