• It was British novelist Terry Pratchett whomade the following extremely sageobservation: “Some humans would doanything to see if it was possible to do it. If youput a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-WorldSwitch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH,’ the paintwouldn’t even have time to dry.”

• You probably don’t think much about thefees charged at ATMs, but maybe you shouldstart. That $1 here, $2.50 there really adds up— to more than $4 billion every year in the U.S.alone.

• Do you suffer from prosopagnosia? Unlessyou’ve suffered some kind of injury to yourbrain, probably not. Also known as faceblindness, prosopagnosia is the inability torecognize familiar faces.

• The Goliath frog of West Africa can reachup to a foot in length and weigh more than 7pounds.

• Wimbledon, played in the United Kingdomand one of the four Grand Slam events, is theoldest tennis tournament in the world. Everyyear at the event about 42,000 balls are used.

• If you’re a fan of the tiny, rubbery candyknown as the Gummi Bear, here’s some goodnews for you: The world’s largest Gummi Bearis now on the market, available for about $30.The equivalent of 1,400 regular-size bears, the

giant candy weighs 5 pounds.

• The Campbell’s Soup paintings byAndy Warhol have become iconic, with collectors paying up to $11.7million to own one. The very first oneever sold, however, cost only $100.That was way back in 1962, and thebuyer was actor Dennis Hopper.

• Use dental floss to cut cheesecakes and crumblycakes. Cut a piece long enough to cover thediameter of the cake (and then some). Lay it acrossyour line to cut and firmly press down while pullingthe ends away from each other. When you get tothe bottom, pull out to one side for a perfectlyfinished cut.

• Place a piece of clear tape over the labels ofprescriptions as soon as you get them, and verifyall information. This will protect the dosing andmedication name if the label gets wet or justhandled too much.

• Ice-cube trays are the best thing ever — they aregreat for so many things. Here are two of myfavorites: Use one to sort beads or hardware. Also, freeze juice in cubes, then use them either as icecubes for water or for mini Popsicles.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a construction worker, age 53, and have been healthy all my life. I caughtwhat I though was an ordinary cough. It stayed andstayed, and it really disturbed my sleep. I wouldwake up many times through the night, coughingmy lungs out. Finally I saw a doctor, who had meget an X-ray, which was normal. He gave me coughmedicine that didn’t work. I saw another doctor. This doctor took blood and swabbed my throat. Ihad whooping cough. Isn’t this a kid’s illness? — H.C.

ANSWER: In most everyone’s mind, whoopingcough is a childhood disease, but it strikes adultstoo. It seems that these days more and more adultsare coming down with it.

Childhood whooping cough is a three-stageillness. The first stage, which lasts about a week, features symptoms similar to an ordinary cold —runny nose and a slight cough. The second stage isheralded by outbursts of violent coughing. At theend of a cough, children draw in air and make awhooping sound. This phase lasts from one to sixweeks. The third stage is the convalescent period, where the cough gradually abates and eventuallyresolves in two to three weeks.

Adult whooping cough doesn’t usually gothrough these stages, and adults rarely make thewhooping sound so characteristic of this conditionin children. They have a cough, like yours, that justwon’t go away. Everyone with a long-lasting coughshould consider the possibility of whooping cough.

Your second doctor did the test that establishesthe diagnosis. He took a swab of the throat (or thenose) and sent it to a lab, where the whoopingcough germ was identified.

If caught in its earlier stages, antibiotics canshorten the course of the illness.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have used aluminum

waterless cookware since 1958. When I simmertomato sauces in it, I notice that the pot is shinyafterward. Yikes! Does that mean aluminum hasgone into the sauces and into us? Is that harmful?Does it lead to Alzheimer’s disease? — L.P.

ANSWER: Traces of aluminum have been found

Whooping CoughNot Just for Kids

in the brains of some Alzheimer’spatients. To date, there has been noconclusive link between aluminumand Alzheimer’s. Furthermore, aluminum cookware releases very littleof this metal into the food cooked in it.Most experts do not advise people tostop using such cookware.

Alzheimer’s disease is a tragedy for the patientand the patient’s family. The booklet on it describeswhat it is and how it’s treated. Readers can ordera copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 903W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a checkor money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canadawith the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes skin tags?

They hang from my neck and under my arms. —D.H.

ANSWER: Their cause isn’t known. Your doctorcan clip them off without any fuss. By age 69, 60percent of us have one or more of them.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer

individual letters, but he will incorporate them inhis column whenever possible. Readers may writehim or request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Layaway Now for aPaid-For ChristmasEven though the economy appears to be springing

back on a number of fronts, most people still aren’twilling to increase debt right now. But the holidaysare coming, no matter the state of the economy oryour personal financial situation.

More and more stores are offering layaway again, not only for holiday shopping, but for everyday items.Layaway lets you spread out paying for your itemswithout the high interest of credit cards.

With layaway, you’ll put down a small deposit thatincludes a service fee and then make regular weeklyor bi-weekly payments until the item is paid off. Eventhough there is a small fee for holding layaway items,it won’t be nearly as much as credit-card interestwould be.

In the past, not all types of merchandise could bepaid for by layaway. Nowadays, stores are more will-ing to expand the types of items. Layaway can behelpful for everyday items, even if you don’t need totake the whole eight weeks to pay for them. If youwant to hold an item at a sale price even for just afew weeks, layaway is one method of ensuring thatyour merchandise will be available.

The downside of layaway is that you can’t missany payments or the merchandise will be put backon the shelves. There is a cancellation fee if you don’tfinish paying and want your money back.

If you want to lay away items, begin shopping now. Many stores require a contract, and most of them arefor eight weeks. By shopping now, your merchan-dise will be paid for just in time for Christmas.

If your preferred stores don’t normally allow pur-chases to be put on layaway, call anyway to inquireif they’re doing layaways for the holidays. Many ofthem are. To get an idea of just how many stores areoffering layaway now, go online and put “stores thatoffer layaway” in a browser.

The biggest benefit of layaway is that your pur-chases will be paid for by the time you get them, andyou won’t end up suffering the credit-card blues whenthe bills come in after the holidays.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answerreader questions, but will incorporate them into his columnwhenever possible. Write to him in care of King FeaturesWeekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475,or send e-mail to [email protected].

Train SetQ: I have a Hawthorne Mickey Mouse train

that includes 13 pieces with accessories. I paid$900 for this set years ago. — Jan, Selinsgrove,Pa.

A: I think your good judgment jumped the trackif you paid $900 for the Hawthorne train set. Imonitored eBay, where I found three Hawthornetrain sets: the Moonlight Express, $24.99; theThomas Kinkade Village train set, $34.95; and aNew York NFL Giants train set in original boxes,“buy it now” price, $350.

Since I found no Hawthorne Mickey Mouse traineither on eBay or in any of my reference books, Iconsulted one of the foremost toy collectors in thecountry for his opinion. According to BernieResnick of Tucson, Ariz., your train is only wortha fraction of what you paid for it. He added that“instant collectibles” rarely appreciate in value andare almost always difficult to sell.

• • •Q: When I was about 11 or 12, I bought a comic

A: I searched my comic-book reference booksand could not find it listed. Hopefully, one of ourreaders can help us track down a copy for you. Inthe meantime, a good source you might explore iswww.cubacollectibles.com.

As much as he would like to play thisdown, Jimmie Johnson enters the Chasefor the Sprint Cup as the favorite.

In part, this is because Johnson, who justturned 34, has won three races this year. Inpart, it is because

he begins the Chase as the third seed, tied at 5,030points with Tony Stewart.

Mainly, however, the favorite’s role is Johnson’sbecause he has won the past three championships, afeat matched only once (by Cale Yarborough, 1976-78) in NASCAR history. Another title would makeJohnson the only winner of four consecutive cham-pionships.

Johnson is the only driver to make every Chasefield. Denny Hamlin has made it in every year ofhis career, which began in 2006, but Hamlin wasn’taround when the format was first implemented in2004.

But Johnson professes to being uneasy.“Guys who have been kind of locked in (having

clinched spots in the Chase several weeks ago), in-cluding Stewart, myself, Jeff (Gordon), we’ve beenkind of running decent, but maybe not scoring themost points,” said Johnson. “I think it’s tough toreally give this to anybody and really pick a favor-ite.

“So we need to just buckle down, put in 10 goodones (races) and work really hard.”

Johnson hasn’t won a race since the Allstate 400at Indianapolis, six races ago. In the races since, hehas finished 13th, 12th, 33rd, eighth, 36th and 11th.Meanwhile, by means of comparison, the driver whoraced his way into the Chase at Richmond, BrianVickers, has accumulated finishes of sixth, 11th,first, 12th, seventh and seventh over the same span.

“Nobody has had a clear advantage,” saidJohnson. “I’m optimistic and feel we have a verygood chance.”

In 2006, Johnson won the title by 56 points over

Can Johnson Make It Four in a Row?2003 champion Matt Kenseth (who failed to make this Chase). Heoutpointed Hendrick Motorsports teammate (and four-time champ) Gor-don by 77. Last year Johnson’s margin was 69 over Carl Edwards.

Almost everyone considers Johnson the man to beat, with the possibleexception of Johnson himself.

Dog’s Constant Licking Isn’t Just Gratitude

By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! Three months ago I adopted a wonderful redAustralian Shepherd from the shelter. “Shep” is very intelligent and easy to train, but has a very annoying habit: He constantly wants to lick me. My face, hands, neck— any bare skin area is a target. I thought he was just showing gratitude for beingadopted, but it hasn’t diminished.

I have a full-time job, so I’m gone about nine hours a day, and as soon as I walkin the door he’s at it. I let him lick me as soon as I walk in the door, but then he won’tstop. What can I do to discourage this? — Nancy H., Bloomfield, N.Y.

DEAR NANCY: First, let me say congratulations on your new pet. Shep soundslike a really great dog. He seems well-behaved and isn’t tearing up the house whileyou’re gone.

The licking, however, is an unacceptable behavior. And because he’s an energeticdog, finding the root cause of his compulsive behavior is very important. Read upon the traits of Australian Shepherds and talk to other Aussie owners, all of whomhave probably experienced one Aussie behavior or another.

Shep is a high-energy herd dog, bred to run all day without tiring. So being insidethe house for several hours is probably a bit taxing for him. He’s also an adoptee, apet that lost one family and gained another, and I’ll bet there’s more than a bit ofseparation anxiety in that compulsive licking.

If possible, have a friend or a professional pet sitter come and walk or play withShep in the middle of the day whileyou’re out to work off some of thatenergy. When you walk in the door, don’t let him lick you at all. Train himin “sit-stay” and use this commandevery time you come in. Once youare home, take him out for a walk, orideally, to an open area where he canrun to work off that pent-up energy.

Pick up training manuals that dealspecifically with Aussies and that ad-dress anxiety issues. If basic behav-ioral methods don’t work for Shep, consider consulting a professionaltrainer to help diagnose and addresshis behavior.

By Ronda AddyFor hunters who really want to blend into the

surroundings, standard camouflage just won’t do. Whatthey need is a ghillie or yowie suit. A ghillie suit is aform of camouflage clothing designed to resembleheavy foliage, break up the body’s outline and addtexture. Originally designed for hunters, it has beenadopted by the military, specifically for snipers. Althoughthe suits are effective, they are very hot (the interior ofthe suit can reach 150 degrees), making themimpractical in some situations. In addition, the burlapused to make the suits is flammable and must betreated with some sort of fire retardant.

Ghillie suits can be purchased at sporting goodsstores as well as online. There are three parts to aghillie suit: the clothes, the netting and the jute thread.Ghillie suits take some to make and can be expensive. An alternative is to make your own ghillie suit usingdye, dental floss, sewing needles, spray paint and othermaterials.

If you are interested in making your own ghillie suit, you should decide first if you want a one- or two-pieceghillie suit. A one-piece suit is easier to get into andwon’t snag on anything if you have to crawl around onthe ground. A two-piece suit offers more flexibility inthe selection of clothing. You may use a pair of coverallsor a fatigue shirt and pants. When buying the clothes, make sure they are one or two sizes larger than youwould normally wear.

You will also needsome strong netting, preferably a blackvolleyball net or somefishnets. If you use alighter color of net, youwill have to dye it darkerwhen you’re dying thejute. You may attach thenetting to the suit usingwaxed dental floss orshoe glue. Apply shoeglue to the dental floss tokeep it from comingundone. You will alsoneed jute or burlap, andwhile you may purchasethese from a fabric store,it’s best to get them froma ghillie suit storebecause they have beentreated to make themmore fire resistant.

You should attach thenetting to the back of theclothing, cutting aroundthe arms and back andleaving enough to wraparound. You should dothe same with the pants.Lay out the suit with thenetting on top and thenstart sewing or gluing itonto the clothing. If youdon’t plan on lying downor crawling, you mayattach it to the front. Ifyou plan to be walking orcrouching, you shoulddefinitely cover the front

Quiet As Can Beof the suit. After the glue dries, you can start tying thestrips, alternating colors and avoiding the creation ofpatterns. Start at the bottom and work your way up,applying a dab of shoe glue to every three strands toensure your suit stays together.

You now need to dye the jute thread. The colors youuse will depend on the environment you will be huntingin. Cut your thread into different lengths (18 to 24inches works well) and dye it. Then attach them to thenetting. Start by attaching one strand of the jute thatbest matches your suit onto the center of each nettingsquare. Then, in a random fashion, add the othercolors, again avoiding the creation of any patterns. Ifyou feel you don’t have enough color or the pattern isnot random enough when you are finished, you canlightly spray paint parts of the suit and the threads.

Finish by tying small, foliated branches, grasses orvines to the suit using strips, cord or string. To helpthe suit blend in better, use leaves and branches onthe top half and feather down, using leaves or grasseson the bottom.

To ensure you get the most out of your ghillie suit, follow these tips:

• Assist the breakdown of your outline by attachingwider items around your neck and head when standingstill.

• Change materials on your suit as you changesettings.

• Use new materials as soon as the green ones dryup and turn color.

• Camouflage your shoes and gun with netting.

Making a ghillie suit isn’t for everyone. It takestime and patience to create a good one. If you don’thave the time or patience, consider using a ghilliekit. These come in five- and seven-pound sizes withpre-cut, dyed jute and netting.

“In Great Waters”by Kit Whitfield(Del Rey, $15)

Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

The setting is England, the time not too long ago,but there is a major difference between this worldand our own: Humans not only cover the land, butalso inhabit the seas. Interbred royal familiescontrol the nations of Europe, but these dynastiesare at risk from illegitimate half-deepsman children, born illegally and raised secretly, in hiding.

Henry is one such child, a feral waif abandonedby his mother and almost immediately adopted asa pawn of power. Anne, on the other hand, is a bornprincess finding the role for which she’s trained allher life falling apart around her. It will fall to thesetwo to change the fate of their country, and to finda new way of reconciling the deepsmen and thelandsmen to one another.

This mermaid world is not about singing fishand dudes with tridents: It is savage, very close tothe natural rhythms. Deepsmen lives are harsh, unsentimental and often brutally short, yet notwithout beauty.

Some of the book’s best passages occur in theopening pages, describing Henry’s transition fromthe sensual, immediate undersea world to a verydifferent life on land. Things as common as straightwalls and corners are bizarre and frightening, andthe simple act of moving around in an environmentthat doesn’t catch him when he falls is a completelynew and often painful experience. His adjustmentis as much conceptual as physical.

Henry is not exactly a pleasant guy, but he stillmanages to be sympathetic, a child of two worlds, unwanted by either but determined to force his wayin. Anne is easier to relate to, and watching hergrow a backbone over the course of the book ishighly satisfying. Between the convincingcharacters and the well-built world they inhabit,“In Great Waters” is an excellent choice for readerslooking for a smart, engaging fantasy read.

Picking the last blooms off spindly plants in yourfamily garden might seem like a final salute tosummer’s beauty, but don’t say your adieus yet. Ascraggly looking plot gone to seed is ripe for morefamily gardening fun. Hiding in pods and flowersare thousands of seeds waiting to be discovered, sorted and saved for next season’s planting.

You can keep dried seeds in small containerswith tight-fitting lids and store in the refrigeratoruntil it’s time to plant them next year. Or, shareseeds with others embedded in homemade recycledpaper shapes you can give as unique gift cards. When spring comes around, they can be plantedin their gardens, card and all!

Here’s how:Collect seeds. Pick flowers, such as marigolds

or poppies, whose petals have died or where a seedhead has formed. Shake out the seeds on pieces ofpaper, keeping them separated by flower type. Letthem dry out for a day or two.

Make homemade paper shapes.1. Tear newspaper, colorful construction paper,

phone book pages and/or junk mail into 1-inch-by-1-inch strips and toss into a blender until it ishalf-full. (Avoid using shiny paper from maga-zines.) Add water to cover the paper, and blend onhigh speed into a thick, goopy consistency, likeoatmeal. Toss in some colorful flower petals if youwish, and give the goop a final pulse.

2. Meanwhile, set a paper-making screen frameor use a scrap piece of stiff window screen overan old towel used for crafts. Set a large cookie

cutter on the screen, then pour a thin layer of thepaper and water “goop” into the shape. Press witha sponge or towel to force excess water throughthe screen. Sprinkle and press seeds of the samekind of plant into the goop in the cookie cutter.

3. Carefully lift the screen onto an old towel.Remove the cookie cutter to reveal its shape. Set atowel on top and press more water out of the shape.Make several seed cards and let dry in a warm, dryplace for a day or two.

4. Punch a hole and thread ribbon through thecards for gift tags, inserts to holiday or birthdaycards, or use as a clever place setting at a party.Add a cheery note with directions to plant the seedcard directly in a prepared flowerpot or garden nextspring.

Does your one-year-old spit out a lot of the foodyou give them? Does your two-year-old reject somefoods and binge on others? Does your three-year-old whine about the meals you make? If any of thissounds familiar to you, then you may have a pickyeater on your hands. Fortunately, there are waysyou can please picky eaters and get them to eat.

Even the pickiest of toddlers tend to eat a well-balanced diet over the course of a week. They maynot do it each and every day, but they manage itsomehow over the week. Generally, if your toddleris active and growing normally, they are gettingthe nutrients they need and you have nothing toworry about. Still that leaves you with the problemof their pickiness. How do you get a picky toddlerto eat? Here are some suggestions:

• Never dole out punishment for poor eating.

Doing so will only reinforce your toddler’s behavior.• Limit snacks and drinks. The more snacks your

toddler eats, the less room they will have for a meal. Two or three snacks a day, plus four ounces of juiceand 24 ounces of milk, are enough.

• Create a regular meal schedule. Don’t try to eatwhen your toddler seems hungry. Stick to yourschedule, and if your child isn’t hungry, make themwait to eat until the next meal. They will not starve inthe meantime and eventually they will getacclimated to the regular meal schedule.

• Cook only one meal. If your toddler doesn’t likewhat you have prepared and refuses to eat, thenlet them skip the meal and make them wait to eatuntil the next meal. Don’t cook them something theywill eat. Not only will it take up time, but eventuallyyour child will come to expect a separate meal andyou may start a habit that will last long into their teenyears.

• Make mealtime pleasant. Do not argue withothers or get into a heated debate. The tension will

make your toddler not want to eat.Keep the conversation light and themood happy.

• Reduce distractions at mealtime.Turn off the TV, refuse all phone callsand insist your toddler stop playingand sit down with you at the table. This will allow your child to focus oneating.

• Provide a wide variety of foodsat mealtime. With more of a selectionof foods to choose from, your toddlerwill be more likely to eat.

• Offer new foods once or twice aweek. Although your toddler mayrefuse them at first, eventually theywill try them and could wind up likingthem. This willexpand theirpalate.

• Respect quirkyeating habits. Many people needto have their meatcooked just so ortheir vegetablescut a specific wayto eat them. If thisis the case withyour toddler, obligetheir habits to apoint. If they can’t

eat a sandwich unless it is cut in half, then cuttheir sandwich in half. Don’t go overboard, however, and spend 30 minutes preparing theirfood. Set limits.

• Keep dessert to a minimum. Don’t providedessert every night and use it to get your child toeat. You could cause them to develop pooreating habits like rushing through a meal oreating everything on their plate, even thoughthey are full, just to get dessert.

Hopefully by following these tips, you will getyour picky eater to eat. If you don’t, speak toyour child’s doctor or a nutritionist. They’re sureto have other ideas.

Q: Occasionally in your columns, you’ll advisereaders to “properly dispose of” a chemical such

Know How to Dispose ofHousehold Waste

By Samantha Mazzotta

as latex paint or thinner. What constitutes properdisposal? — Chuck D. in Cincinnati

A: Proper disposal of household waste —especially waste that is toxic to humans, pets andwildlife and waste that does not break down easilyin the environment — is a very important choreboth for your safety and the health of theenvironment.

That’s why the majority of municipalities in theUnited States have hazardous-waste disposalguidelines and facilities, as well as recycling

centers. Here are a few tips toefficiently dispose of trash, chemicalsand used home-repair items.

• Look up requirements forhazardous-waste disposal for your cityor county either by visiting themunicipal Web site or contacting cityhall.

• Find out when recycling, yardwaste (tree trimmings, leaves, etc.)and hazardous waste are either pickedup or where and when they can bedropped off. Each municipality hasdifferent rules and facilities.

• Store toxic items marked fordisposal in a tool shed or corner of thegarage, away from the house andinaccessible to children or pets.

• Don’t put toxic items into the recycling bin, even temporarily. Half-empty bottles of cleaner, for example, might get mixed up with empty plasticcontainers and forgotten.

• Used motor oil is often accepted for recyclingby auto-parts stores and some auto repair shops.Contact nearby retailers for information.

Remember that any chemical, even seeminglyinnocent cleaners, can be harmful to livingcreatures and the environment. A product labeledas “nontoxic” should still be carefully disposed of— for example, dumping bleach down a sink draincan wreak havoc on a septic system. Latex-basedpaints, thrown into landfills with regular garbage, can leach chemicals into the ecosystem. Taking afew extra minutes to sort out and properly storeand dispose of these items will have a positiveimpact on your home and the environment.

HOME TIP: Read the labels ofhousehold chemicals and home-

improvement products for information onhow to safely dispose of those items.
