2004 Regional Award Banquet – L. Duty

I guess that the above should be a fitting title for my articles. Since this is my third term as Regional Executive, I guess its peat, repeat and re-repeat J.

For those who did not make it to the Awards Banquet, you missed a good one. The “decorations crew” did an even better job than ever setting things up, the food was great, the beer was cold (but I heard that mixed drinks were a little watered down <g>), and a lot of deserving people got some great awards

(see elsewhere in the Wail for a complete listing). Make sure you mark this on your calendar for next year!

Some people who did not get awards but were profusely thanked were the officers that make this Club run. I would again like to thank last year’s officers, program chairs, etc. for all the work they have done to allow us to have so much fun. In addition, if you look at the new contacts page, make sure you thank all of the new people for all their work – we

could not do it without them.

Over 100 members and guests attended this years Regional Awards banquet held at the Airport Hilton. Congratulations to all the winners and special award recipients. Some of the notable accomplishments were members with 35 years of participation, Club Member of the year, and our Drivers of the Year in several categories. I believe all had a great time, and would want to make sure we thank all those who helped to plan and coordinate this event. suspension parts, etc.) but not for items out in front. Depending on the part, discounts should range from 0-30% with an average of 5-10%. To get this discount, mention the account “Wichita Region SCCA #515242”. It is available at all O’Reilly’s nationwide. If you ever go to the O’Reilly’s at 21st and Arkansas, make sure you thank Jason for setting this up for us!

But wait – there’s more! Although not mentioned at the banquet, member Steve Lewis has set us up for discounts on OEM parts at Schofield dealerships! In an e-mail, Steve writes: “I have arranged for active SCCA members to receive a discount on parts purchases at some of the Scholfield Automotive Dealerships. I work in the parts department of our Pontiac, Buick, GMC location. We are a full-line General Motors parts department carrying a full line of GM parts and GM Performance Parts. I have spoken to Ron at our Auto Plaza location and he said The Porsche Club is already set up to receive a discount, therefore he didn't foresee a problem with

Active SCCA members receiving a parts discount either. I have not heard back from either of the Honda or Hyundai locations yet. Members will be required to present their valid SCCA membership ID to receive the discount price. I will pass on more information as it becomes available. It would be greatly appreciated if you could print this in the upcoming Wail. Here are the people to contact when inquiring for parts.

Scholfield Pontiac, Buick, GMC 7633 East Kellogg Steve Lewis (316)858-6778 1-800-362-2691 20% discount Scholfield Auto Plaza Mercedes, Jaguar, Acura, Porsche, Lexus Kellogg & Greenwich Road. Ron Lewis (316)688-5000 discount to be determined”

But wait – there’s even more! I just got off the phone with member Mark Braun from Kellogg Auto Supply. Mark has set up accounts with all of

the Poorman’s Auto Supply, Inc. stores in the area (9 stores, everywhere from Salina to Wellington – see the Yellow Pages for the locations) for us to receive discounts. Show your current SCCA membership card and receive a 30 to 50% discount!

So as I close this article up to try to get ready for the upcoming National Convention in Kansas City, I will finish this with what has become my usual motto:

Are we havin’ fun yet?

Solo 2 Report – Hal Larcher / Tom Urbanek

A Special Thanks to Amy Timmons and all of those that helped coordinate the SOLO Awards Banquet. If you were there, I do not need to tell you what a good time it was. If you were not able to make it, you really did miss out on a good time.

A Big “Thanks” to all of you that participated in the 2004 SOLO Season. It turned out to be a safe and fun year. The 2005 SOLO season is nearing its kick off. Come out to Boeing on March 13th to knock those cobwebs loose and begin the 2005 season on the right foot.

We made some improvements to the SOLO program during 2004, thanks to the SOLO Steering Committee (SSC) held on the first Monday of the month at Torre’s Pizza in Old Town, and we hope to continue to build on those this year. Bob Cummings has agreed to continue to lead the SSC again in 2005. Come out and join us. Some people like the pizza and some people don’t, but I’ve never once heard a complaint about the beer. March 7th is our first meeting of 2005.

We have a few changes that we are going to implement for 2005. First off, the price for non-SCCA members attending events in 2005 has been increased to $25 for non-WGP events and $30 for WGP events. If your membership is not current, you may want to do something about that before the first event. Second, we are reverting to the old way of doing registration due to a few “misplaced” entry fees

during 2004. For 2005, you will arrive on site, sign the waiver, park your car, go to the trailer to pay and get your tech card and then take your car to TECH (unloaded and ready to go!). The details of how the tech card gets back to the trailer is still up in the air but we are working on it, see plug for the SSC above. And third, this season we are only sponsoring 10 events. All events will be counted for points. Instead of the criteria for points being the number of participants in your class, the points will be given based on your finish. Such as 1st place will get 10 points, 2nd will get 9 points, 3rd place will get 8 points and so on. If there are more than 10, participants in your class at that event 11th place pays 0 (zero) points. The reason for this change is so that we can utilize the new Timing and Scoring software and eliminate the need for manual tracking. I hope that this change will allow us to provide your points standing, in the class that you are running in, at the end of the events.

I would like to ask a favor of everyone: while you are out and about around the Wichita area, or even just within the Wichita Region boundaries, and you happen to see a location that might be conducive to hosting future SOLO events, make note of its location and let the SSC, Hal or I know about it. Having too many sites to choose from is a problem that everyone should benefit from.

Make those alignment appointments now!

Rally Report – Keith & Judy Pfautz

The Ark Valley Race Group, made up of the Ne Okla, Wichita and Oklahoma Regions, will commence their 2005 racing season on April 9-10 at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. The event, a Regional-National event will be followed later in the year by a Drivers School-Regional on May 21-22, and the annual Regional-National on July 2-3. If you are new to road racing and wish to participate at any or all of the events, please let us know. If you are not sure what you would like to do at the races, consult the Wichita Region web page for information regarding the various specialties. We offer a lunch both days, as well as a Saturday night dinner party

that gives you the opportunity to meet other workers and drivers.

If you are interested in obtaining a competition license and are not aware of the classes and procedures, the first race would be an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the club racing program. I will be there as well as other individuals that will assist you in introducing you to our program. With the National Runoffs moving to Topeka, getting started now as either a worker or driver, will get you started on the path to be a participant at our premier event. Look forward to seeing you at Hallett

This is a case of not hitting the ground running, but we will try to give you an update on rallying in Wichita Region. The first rally of the year will again be the Road Dog Rally. Bruce Bettinger will be Rallymaster and we are planning to have the event a little earlier in the year – March 19. We plan to have a rally school the weekend before the Road Dog (March 12) to get people in the rallying state-of –mind. All told, we plan to have five regular events with the Poker Rally to the picnic for the September meeting as well. We may even have a fun event like a Hare and Hounds on a Friday evening ending at a proper venue for “sporting fellowship”. Keep an eye on the website for event dates, and, hopefully, we will have information in the Wail in enough time so that anyone

Enter the WICHITA REGION New Membership Raffle

and WIN!

Win your choice of:

• Free 2006 National & Regional Membership renewal! • Free entry into all 2006 regional Solo II events – an entire season! • Free entry into all 2006 regional Rally events – an entire season!

How to enter:

Any individual who becomes a new Regular, Military, or First Gear membership in the Wichita Region SCCA within the calendar year 2005 will automatically be entered in the raffle. Also included would be a separate raffle entry for spouses in the event of a new Spouse membership and would include separate raffle entries for spouse and any child 14 or older (as of 12/31/2005) in the event of a new Family membership.

Here is the good part: Any current member of the Wichita Region will qualify for an entry in this raffle with each new member that they bring in! In addition, the current member will receive a refund of his/her 2005 regional dues for the first member! Just make sure that your name is noted by the event Registrar or Membership Chair when your sponsored new member signs up. Rules and regulations: Anyone who has been a prior member of the SCCA (aka: a retread member) will be excluded from raffle entry as a “new member”. Current members will earn dues refund only once regardless of number of new members sponsored, but will have their name entered in the raffle for each new member. A new member will also have their name entered in the raffle if they subsequently bring in another new member but in that event, they will receive a refund of their 2005 regional dues. The free 2006 national membership prize is defined as a duplicate of the winner’s existing 2005 membership category including Spouse surcharge or Family surcharge as appropriate. There will be three (3) winners to be drawn at random from all qualified entries at the 2005 Awards Banquet to be held in early 2006. Each winner will have his or her choice of any of the three prizes. Must be present to win except spouse or parent may accept for their absent spouse or child. Prize may be transferred at the winner’s discretion but must be used in it’s entirely by a single individual. All decisions by the Membership Chair are final.

SCCA SUPPORT FOR OVER 30 YEARS

Here we go, the start of the New Year is upon us, and I seem to be behind already. The ice storm about did us in here, you really do not know how much you depend on electricity until you have been without it for a week in freezing weather. My new best friend is my generator, although he could not power everything, at least we got some lights, and TV. Too bad, it could not do our heat because of a lack of cutout for it. <SIGH> Please excuse this issue as I really was not prepared to publish this year and there is a lot to do in the first one. You will notice once again we have a new format, I hope you like it. It was very inspiring at the awards banquet to see all the people from the different sides of our club together. In addition, I do not know about you but one certain member constantly amazes me with his cooler than James Dean verve for life, and that would be Othal Vrana. Whom else do you know with his “experience” will stop and talk to you about his new custom Stillen front end on his Z car? Not sure how many others are interested but in the 60’s it was big news when hot rod companies got around to making steel reproductions for 30’s cars. Now they are going to be delivering “new” 69 ragtop Camaros. You can get an all steel body for about 12k, and build yourself a “brand new” Camaro vert. Way Cool sez I, (may have to sell J-Lo the big Pontiac ragtop to afford one). I would also like to thank John Davis for taking pictures for us at the awards banquet. Have to run now; I have to start getting tires, shocks, springs, carbon hood, and etc ready!
