Dear Friends,

By the time you read this, there will probably be a new pope, though as

I write the Cardinals are only just about to start the process of electing

him. But it’s a process that — at least as portrayed by the media — has

something of an air of crisis about it.

There is no doubt that the scandal of paedophile priests has left a very

ugly stain on the Roman Catholic Church, and the sense of crisis has

been heightened in this country by the resignation of the Scottish

Cardinal Keith O’Brien.

It is not my place to try to defend the Roman Catholic Church — indeed

I profoundly disagree with some of its claims (such as that of Papal

Infallibility) which arguably make its position even worse. But neither

am I going to join in the mud-throwing.

THIS MAGAZINE

Published bi-monthly, six times a year.

Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 2

The Church of England has more than enough difficulties of its own,

and hardly has an unblemished record itself when it comes to dealing

with sexual abuse. So I could not try to claim any ‘moral high ground’,

even if I wanted to.

But then neither can anyone else. One thing which the past couple of

years have shown us very clearly is that there is no moral high ground

to be claimed — by anyone. Neither the BBC (in the wake of the

Jimmy Savile revelations), nor politicians (after the expenses scandal),

nor the press as a whole (as revealed by Lord Justice Leveson), nor the

NHS (after the Stafford Hospital scandal, and Jimmy Savile again), nor

the police or legal professions, nor anyone else, is in a position to

criticise others without themselves facing the charge of hypocrisy.

That is why Jesus told his followers not to judge others. It’s not that the

people they might be tempted to judge do not deserve condemnation,

but that in passing such judgement on others they would also be

condemning themselves. And perhaps that is the real failure of the

Roman Catholic Church (and no doubt other churches too) — to give

the impression that they were better than others, and to set themselves

up as such.

In fact, the only difference between Christians and others is not that

Christians are better than anyone else, but that they know they are not

and that their only hope is to rely on Jesus to change them.

But the good news — which we remember particularly over the Easter

period — is that through his death and resurrection Jesus is able to do

precisely that.

May you know the joy which that good news brings this Easter.

WHITE WALTHAM CRICKET CLUB

We hope you regard the cricket club as an important part of village life and the club is extremely keen to develop further its relationship with the residents of the parish by enhancing its profile and generally becoming more involved in village life.

Despite the very poor weather in the summer of 2012 the season proved to be one of the most successful for the club in terms of league position - the 1st XI finished 3rd in Division 1 of The Morrant Chilterns League whilst the 2nd XI ended up in 5th place in Division 3. A minor reorganization for the coming season has resulted in the 2nd XI being promoted to Division 2 for 2013 which will be a season that is likely to produce the greatest playing challenge for the club in many years.

In addition to two league teams the club also runs a Sunday friendly team, a midweek team in the height of the summer and two junior teams at Under 11 and Under 13 age groups from the beginning of the season until the end of the school summer term.

During 2012 the club achieved ECB Clubmark accreditation, acknowledging that the club operates sound management practices, including robust child protection policies and procedures.

We are actively seeking new players for the club - prospective senior members should contact our 1st XI captain, Gareth Pugh ([email protected]), and prospective junior members should approach our Junior Manager, Jordan Thomas ([email protected]). Indoor nets have already started at Cox Green School and details can be obtained by contacting either Gareth or Jordan as appropriate. Coaching for juniors is provided by ECB qualified coaches, all of whom are CRB checked.

As is always the case with voluntary organizations there are a plethora of capital projects which need to be undertaken. We are currently working on raising funds for partial renovation of our pavilion roof, replacement practice net facilities and a new roller (the current one is coming to the end of a long life!). As such we welcome sponsorship, donations and volunteer time and general support as we seek further positive development for the club.

We also welcome your support at matches - the full fixture list for 2013 will be located on our website (www.whitewalthamcricket.com) in due course. We look forward to seeing many locals at our matches during the summer.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article. Richard West Chairman White Waltham CC. E-mail: [email protected]

ChristianAidWeek2013

This year the house to house collection will be taking place from Sunday

May 12th until Saturday May 18th.

We do hope you will be as generous as you usually are even in these

austere times, as this is now the only event that takes place once a year

for this worthy cause. We can assure you that the money is only used by

Christian Aid workers doing on the spot projects in the various countries,

and does not find its way into the wrong hands.

In anticipation thank you very much

LETTER FROM NEW ZEALAND Ups And Downs

Now, here’s a question – do you know where the steepest street in the world

is? San Francisco? Somewhere in the Far East? Tibet? Just recently San

Francisco tried to lay claim to this record, but when the measurements were

redone and confirmed, that city had to agree that

it does not have the world’s steepest street. No it

is right here in New Zealand, not only that but it is

right here in Dunedin!!

I have been thinking about the fact that life seems

to consist of lots of ups and downs. This picture is

taken from the bottom of Baldwin Street and,

having walked up and down it more than once, this

is certainly an “up and down”

Dunedin is by no means a flat city. When I recall

walks we used to do in and around Maidenhead,

there were very few hills to climb or even to see in the distance. That doesn’t

mean that our walks along the Thames were not enjoyable because they

were.

This is a city of many valleys, Kaikorai Valley, North East Valley, places which

contain streams which flow into the sea and which rise towards the hills. We

have lots of hills, some of them called mountains (they’re not mountains of

course) from which radio and television signals are broadcast (although next

month all our TV goes digital) that one is

called Mt. Cargill. In the picture is the view

from our lounge out to Saddle Hill. So called

because, although you can’t see it in this

picture, there is a smaller summit behind

and the two parts are separated by a saddle.

I sometimes do a job on the computer.

It consists of receiving audio files and transcribing them according to

templates also supplied. I am saddened by much of what I have to type

because even though it mostly concerns medical problems it also very

frequently is involved in the “lows” that so many suffer from bad moods right

through to depressive disorders.

Page 15: The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of ...btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site1468/Parish...The Church of England has more than enough difficulties of its own,

Yes, we all have highs and lows in our lives. There are those great times when

we seem to be walking on the heights in glorious sunshine and then other

days when we are deep in the valley and when, whatever we try to do,

nothing seems to help and despair seems to creep closer and closer by the

minute.

I think almost everyone is familiar with Psalm 23 where King David wrote:

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear

no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Many of you who read this, like me, will have been in this valley and I

sincerely hope that, also like me, you have come through that valley and

emerged into the sunshine. The Psalmist knew that for him, the secret was

that God was always with him.

But there was another valley, this one in the life of Christ. John wrote: (in

chapter 18) When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and

crossed the Kidron Valley. … Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place,

because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the

grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers … Then the detachment of soldiers

with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus.

And we know that what followed was that Jesus was put to death . . . on a

hillside outside Jerusalem. So although we usually think of valleys as dark

places, they are sometimes very beautiful locations. And hills and mountains

are not always bright and happy places. We have some very high mountains

less than 100 miles from where we live. The history of these peaks is littered

with the sad stories of mountaineers who lost their lives climbing them.

So where are you with your life? Deep in a dark valley where little or no light

seems to penetrate? Perhaps you are walking the heights in warm bright

sunshine and everything seems to be going well? Think now of your own

experiences in the past. One day you will get out of the valley and a bright

hillside will beckon. But you know and I know that this sequence is likely to

be repeated throughout your life.

So where will it end. I pray you will know what King David knew - that

whatever our situation, if God is with us, we need fear no evil and we will be

well not just for time but also, and much more importantly, for eternity. And

this is all possible just because Jesus was crucified, rose again that glorious

Eastertide and is in heaven preparing a place for us where there will be no

“downs” ever . . . only “ups”.

Ode to Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

• Knowing when to come in out of the rain, • Why the early bird gets the worm, • Life isn’t always fair, and • Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults are in charge not children).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well- intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of an 8 year old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers: I know my rights, I want my rights, I want it now, and I’m a victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

The Marathon Last year I entered the London marathon. The race started and soon I was in trouble. It was embarrassing, for as the hours went by, I slid further and further back in the race, until I was at the very end. The man who was in front of me, second to last, then began making fun of me. He said, "Hey buddy, how does it feel to be last?" I replied: "You really want to know?" Then I dropped out of the race.

Latest News... Project Rainbow has now raised, or been pledged, more than £450,000 (this is over 90% of the total needed). The latest gift was £10,000 given by the Shanly Foundation. Our thanks go to the Shanly Foundation and to all those who have contributed to this total. We are now working hard to raise the final amount needed so that we can get building!

Recent events...

The Burns Night Supper at White Waltham Academy on Friday 25 January raised over £650 for Project Rainbow. Much fun was had by all those who came along and our particular thanks go to Anne Montminy for leading the dancing.

The Spring Musical Soiree with Pippa Eden, Elizabeth Slade and their pupils on Saturday 2 March raised just over £147 for Project Rainbow. It is a delight to see the progress made from one concert to the next by the very talented young people who perform on these occasions.

private event is being hosted for Project Rainbow by Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen, Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, and a Patron of Project Rainbow.

Tickets are strictly limited, cost £40 each and are available from Bridget Tracy on 01628 670338, Email: [email protected]. Names and addresses of all ticket holders will need to be supplied for security purposes. For more information see page 13.

Helping Project Rainbow to reach its total....

We are grateful for all those who have helped in so many different ways to get us to our current total. If you would like to support Project Rainbow you could:

• Pray for us to reach our target in 2013 so that we will soon be able to serve the children, families and young people in our local community even better.

• Offer to help out at a Project Rainbow event.

• Put us in touch with someone you know who would like to support Project Rainbow.

• Make a one off gift to Project Rainbow.

• Set up a pattern of regular giving to Project Rainbow.

To make a one-off gift, or to set up regular giving to Project Rainbow, you can either complete the form in the giving packs available from the Church and The Vicarage, or give online via the Project Rainbow website where you can find more information:

Woodlands Park School

This term has been a busy one and as well as all the preparations for

Easter, the children have been working hard towards their end of year

assessments which will be upon us very soon!

The Dance Festival was very successful and the children received many

positive comments about their performance as well as their behaviour and

manners.

We have also been lucky enough to take part in a project with The Stanley

Spencer Gallery in Cookham. The children in year three and four shared

their creative presentation with other schools involved in the project,

Wessex, Knowl Hill, St Lukes and Manor Green. They presented their

work at Cox Green Theatre at the beginning of March.

The Environmental Club has been working hard and we have planted

onions, garlic, strawberries, parsnip, potatoes, peas and beans. Hopefully

we shall be eating them later in the year when they are harvested. Once

again we are very proud of our kitchen and Mrs Brind our cook. In light of

all the controversy around ready prepared meals and suppliers to school

meal contractors, we are especially happy to say that we source all our

meat from a local butchers with full traceability. We have been awarded a

bronze food award because we try to source as much of our produce as we

can locally and supply what we can through our own allotment. All meals

are cooked from fresh everyday and I can personally vouch for how tasty

they are!

We are always looking for volunteers to come and help us in school; if you

think this would interest you please contact the school on the number

below. We would welcome anyone who thinks they would like to work

with children; either helping out in the classroom, listening to children

read, helping out at after school clubs etc.

Once again, we are always happy to show around visitors to the school.

Please contact us on 01628 822350 to arrange a visit and meet our

wonderful pupils and staff. Alternatively take a look at our school website

Band returns to St Mary’s White Waltham Waltham St Lawrence Silver Band returns for another charity concert on Wednesday 15th May raising money for Project Rainbow.

It’s the band’s third visit and rehearsals are well on their way. We shall be offering the usual selection of marches, overtures and for the first time in public a brass band arrangement of the music from Les Miserables.

The band will be on its travels later on in May when we will be guests of the Musikverien Friesheim, the band twinned with us, they are based near Cologne.

Last year the band had two Royal engagements: the first at Windsor Great Park for the reopening of Cow pond; and outside Windsor Castle entertaining the crowds whilst HM met locals and visitors.

We also spent a weekend in March recording a C.D. If you want to know what the band is up to it has a very good web site, walthamband.com with pictures, dates and details of band members and a link to the secretary. Steve Saunders

White Waltham & Shottesbrooke Guild

Chairman’s Report

There is no denying that fact the White Waltham & Shottesbrooke Guild boasts an incredibly lively and jolly group of members. Every time we meet there is huge enthusiasm and much laughter, as well as the odd deep and meaningful conversation, normally all accompanied by some rather delicious cakes and sandwiches. So if anyone over the age of 60 who lives in, or has a connection (however tenuously) with our Parish, feels like they need an uplifting morning, then come on down to one of our coffee mornings. They are relatively casual affairs, although the drawing of the Raffle is the one occasion when quiet descends upon us and everyone becomes a little more serious. Over last 12 months we’ve had, amongst other things, the delights of coffee at Crescent Dale, Royal Ascot Ladies Day at Bury Court and the splendour of Margaret’s garden in Holyport. We also enjoyed the Easter and Christmas lunches in the Parish Hall with Bingo in April and carols by the local school in December providing the entertainment. Our November trip to see the Magic Flute by the Maidenhead Operatic Society was a great success; we are very fortunate to have such talented productions right on our doorstep. We were very saddened though to lose Shirley Bye and Audrie Woodhouse last year, both wonderful ladies who made the world a better place. I consider myself very privileged to have known them. My thanks as ever goes to our President Lady Smith and to my partner in crime, Catherine, who helps make running the Guild extremely good fun. If anyone is interested in joining us at one of our Coffee mornings, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Emma Donald, on 01628 820354 or by email: [email protected].

Hurley & Walthams Ward

Your three Ward Councillors

Maureen Hunt 01189 404808 [email protected] Carwyn Cox 01628 633157 [email protected], David Evans 01189 034124 [email protected]

Well Christmas has come and gone and with it we hope the harsh weather.

We can now look forward to Easter and the beautiful Spring season where we

in the rural areas are so fortunate to be surrounded by all the flora that once

again starts a new cycle.

Council News The Council started a new cycle this year by again cutting its Council Tax for the third year running. This year it has been cut by 3%. This means that Band

D residents will pay £945.78, compared to £1,037.22 just four years ago. A

huge 9% reduction pre inflation. Approaching 12% in real terms.

These consecutive cuts mean that a massive £16 million has been put into the

local economy since 2010, with nearly £1.4 million this year alone. Despite

these tax cuts services to Residents have been enhanced and extended.

• Library opening hours extended. Sunday opening hours for the first

time.

• A new food waste collection.

• Green waste routes extended and costs frozen.

• Participatory Budgets expanded to include Youth Council

• Extra money available for roads.

Crime - 1st April 2012 until 1

st March 2013 burglaries were down 9.5%

compared to the previous year. Successful investigations resulting in

convictions had improved by 10.6% which is good news.

Police – Many of us are unaware of just how much is going on with our police and we thought you would be interested to know what is going on at the

moment.

There are several operations on the go at the moment:

Operation Reacher provides regular mapping of crimes and daily meetings with senior officers in the borough. Details of overnight crimes

are cascaded to the neighbourhood policing teams where they ‘cocoon’

residents in the affected area, offering support, crime prevention advice and glean any information that may help the investigation.

Page 31: The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of ...btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site1468/Parish...The Church of England has more than enough difficulties of its own,

Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 31

Operation Lamplight provides for daily visits to suspects and newly

released prisoners noting their whereabouts, clothing and vehicles so that they can be cross referenced with reports of any crime that might take

place. Prison authorities now provide the police with the released

prisoner’s official address, details of curfew and conditions of release so

that police can visit and ensure they are where they are required to be. Winter Anti Burglary campaign: Automatic Number Recognition

cameras are being deployed in response to a spike in burglaries during the

winter months Operation Lapwood: is the initiative to use Neighbourhood Policing

Teams out of uniform on patrol after dark. Residents are urged to

continue to report incidents of ‘Nottingham Knockers’ to the police. Thames Valley Police systems collect all this information and can link

number plates of vehicles suspected carrying criminals with similar

reports that might enable the cars to be stopped or at the very least make

criminals change their vehicles more frequently than they would like.

Maidenhead Library You may be interested to know the Library holds

homework help sessions on Saturday mornings. There is a quiet space to

work, free computer access for children, online resources such as

Encyclopaedia Britannica, hundreds of books and access to computers and printing. Under-12s have access only to free child-friendly Internet sites while

12- to 14-year-olds have full Internet access only with parental consent.

Further details on 01628 796969 or at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/libraries.htm Media contact is Alison Hollands on 01628 796974.

Community Savings and Loans (the credit union for Berkshire) is in the

Town Hall, Maidenhead, from 10am to 1pm. The local alternative to high street banks and doorstep lenders, CSL savers get a dividend dependent upon

CSL profits and free life insurance cover. They can also get access to loans at

very competitive rates with repayment plans that match their

circumstances. More at www.cslberks.org or call 0118 958 5803.

Community Care Grants and Crisis Loans Changes are on their way to

the funding that helps vulnerable people in difficult times and those in need

through an unexpected crisis – and the Royal Borough is keen to get views

about how the system can work in the best interests of local residents.

From 1 April responsibility for community care grants and crisis loans

moves to local authorities from the Department for Work and Pensions

(DWP) and this means the council can make changes to ensure the limited

funding available is used most effectively for those in genuine financial

difficulties in our community.

Page 32: The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of ...btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site1468/Parish...The Church of England has more than enough difficulties of its own,

Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 32

Currently:

• Crisis Loans are available for people who need help to buy

necessities like food, fares and essentials for children after a major

incident such as an accident or house fire

• Community Care Grants are for vulnerable young people or adults

(eg older people, those who are ill or have disabilities or young

people leaving care) to buy essentials like furniture and furnishings

to help them live independently.

The council is proposing that both community care grants and crisis

support will be available only to those already on state benefits, that there

should be a cap on the number of applications a person can make per year

and that support should, as far as possible, be ‘in kind’, for example in the

form of store vouchers. Also proposed are certain limits on the items

covered and the amounts available per claim.

Fostering Foster carers and adopters come from different walks of life but

they all have one interest at heart and that is offering the best outcome for

children. If you are interested please call the Royal Borough’s fostering

and adoption team on 01628 683201 or emailing adoption-

Local News

Church Hill – Work will be going on to clear the ditches in Church Hill

and it is hoped this will alleviate most of the water accumulating on the

road. Watch out for the traffic lights.

Foliejohn Way - This planting season will see shrubbery planted on the

roundabout in Foliejohn Way – a project your Councillors have

undertaken. It is envisaged the leafy roundabout will add to the village

atmosphere. We are looking to put double yellow lines around the

roundabout to prevent parking that sometimes occurs that is a safety issue.

Our thanks to your Parish Council for their support in this project and for

their agreement to maintain the shrubbery.

Crime Awareness Road Show A number of Burglary road shows will be

held in Hurley & the Walthams. As yet no dates/locations have been given

but please keep an eye on the link below for more information. PCSO

Davidson and our Community Warden Pete Boardman have recently been

setting road shows up outside schools and catching parents when they are

collecting children. These have been well received.

Tales from the Bells

Well, the weather is improving, Spring is on its way and Easter is around the corner.

Currently we are going through the season of Lent. The last week of Lent is called Holy Week and this is the one time of the year we do not ring the bells. Not even a practice takes place. This is not just at White Waltham and Shottesbrooke but across the country.

On Easter Sunday we start ringing the bells and celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. Hopefully we will ring a quarter peal.

In February we had our Bell Ringers AGM at the White Waltham tower. Rev David Andrew chaired the meeting opening it with a reading from Psalm 150 and a prayer.

It was quite a long meeting with plenty to discuss due to the departure of two ringers. The meeting also included electing of tower captains and voting on them. (As you can see I’ve been elected and pleased to carry on the post). Afterwards we had a very short practice. The meeting closed with the saying of the grace.

We are still looking to recruit people. So if you would like to have a go please feel free to contact me. Details are in the recruitment advert in this magazine. We will teach anyone from 10 – 100 years old.

Learning to ring is an opportunity:-

• To meet and make friends;

• It’s a lifelong learning experience;

• A team activity;

• Helps to keep your brain active;

• Take part in something that has happened for over 400 years.

Here’s a bit of information about White Waltham. The bells are 24 years old as they were recast in 1989. So being fairly new this makes them easy to ring. There is a good staircase and 44 steps to the ringing chamber.

Shottesbrooke have older bells. Three of these date from 1634. It is hard to believe that the bells are so old and who knows how many people have rung them over the years.

Page 36: The Vicar’s Letter The Vicarage, Waltham Road, (corner of ...btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site1468/Parish...The Church of England has more than enough difficulties of its own,

Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 36

These bells are also easy to ring as they are lighter than the ring at White Waltham. There is a narrow staircase with fewer steps to the ringing chamber.

If you would like to find out more you can contact me or Bob Packer who is Tower Captain at Shottesbrooke. All information is in the recruitment advert in this edition of the magazine on page 33.

Although there are two tower captains in the parish we all still work together as one band. So you get two churches for the price of one!

If you are interested, we look forward to seeing you.

Lesley Graves, Tower Captain, White Waltham.

A Prayer for Easter-tide, by Daphne Kitching

Dear Father, Life can be difficult. Sometimes it feels as though the sun has stopped shining, just as it did on that first Good Friday. Sometimes it can feel as though we are stuck in the darkness and it seems impossible that the light will ever shine again. And yet the reality is that Friday did move on, into the most glorious Sunday. The Son did rise - and his light shines on, transforming the darkest of times, holding out hope and peace and life to all who will turn and look into his face. He is alive. He will help us. Thank you Father, for Jesus. Amen.
