It was a long wait, but after 76 years we finally have a British men’s

Wimbledon champion!

Okay, so it’s only in the doubles — but at least Andy Murray made it to

the singles final, and even took the first set. And as I write, the England

Cricket team have just completed a 4-0 series whitewash against

Australia in one-day internationals, and Bradley Wiggins is in the lead

in the Tour de France, and tipped to become the first Brit ever to win it.

So it’s already been quite a summer for British sports fans. And by the

time you read this the Olympics will be getting under way, with lots of

hopes for medals there too — especially after the British team’s

performance in Beijing four years ago.

If you’re one of those people who is ‘turned off’ by sport, then you’ll be

wondering what all the fuss is about, or even looking for somewhere to

hide. But it’s interesting how a sporting triumph seems to have power

to bring people together, and to make us feel good about ourselves —

even if (perhaps like me) we’re not normally all that bothered about

sport.

So while, at one level, the Olympics are all about celebrating individual

achievement and sporting prowess, there is also this other side to them

too. There is a ‘medals table’, showing which countries are doing best;

and the National Anthem of the winner’s country is played at a medal

ceremony. So there is a sense in which British athletes are competing

on behalf of all of us, and we all feel involved in their success (or, as it

may be, near miss or failure).

These two sides to the Olympic Games are a profound reflection of

something at the very heart of what it means to be a human being. We

are each of us individuals, with our own individual hopes, fears,

abilities and aspirations. But we are also part of a larger group, on

which we depend, and to which we contribute, to a greater or lesser

extent. That is the way that God has made us.

In recent years we have tended to overlook the significance of this

wider aspect. We value our relationships with family and friends, but

often only for what we can get out of them ourselves. We have become

too focussed on our individual lives, and neglected the contribution we

can make to the wider group. And the result is that everyone is worse

off, as we become more and more isolated from each other and

community life suffers.

As always, it is Jesus who provides us with the perfect balance, and the

perfect example. He didn’t just ‘go it alone’, but formed a group of

disciples around himself, with whom he shared his life and work. He

set them the example of loving service, rather than simply looking out

for himself. And in his death and resurrection he won a victory over

evil, suffering and death in which they — and all who are willing to

identify with him — really do share.

The joy we can feel in our identification with sporting triumph is just a

faint echo of the joy available through an identification with Jesus.

Let’s remember that as we cheer the British team on this summer. And

if we’re also reminded that we’re more than simply individuals, but part

of a bigger whole to which we also need to contribute, then these

Olympics really might have a lasting impact on our country.

BIG JUBILEE LUNCH in WOODLANDS PARK

Over 300 people joined in the Big Jubilee Lunch on Monday 4 June. Activities like face painting, water balloon volleyball, tug of war, hoopla, limbo, balloon sculpture, parachute games and lots more kept us all entertained. The Bouncy Castle and Climbing Wall proved very popular not to mention the free food

and drinks that were enjoyed throughout the afternoon!

Our thanks go to Housing Solutions who took the lead in organising the Big Jubilee Lunch, and to members of White Waltham Church, Woodlands Park Methodist Church and St Mary’s Church in Maidenhead, and other local residents, who

provided invaluable support.

St Mary’s Flower Guild

White Waltham

The Flower Guild decorated the Church on 26 May in

celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee and what a amazing show it

was. Everyone used all their skills and imagination and

produced a wonderful array of arrangements from an enormous crown of flowers on the font to a Union Jack of

flowers on a windowsill, from the Queen’s racing colours to

arrangements of memorabilia dating back over the last sixty years. The church opened on the afternoon of Sunday 27 May

so that everyone had an opportunity to see the floral displays,

afternoon tea was served and the children of White Waltham school choir came to entertain us. My thanks to all who

contributed so much to the success of the weekend. The

flowers stayed in the church for a few weeks afterwards so

many people had a chance to appreciate and admire the exhibits.

My thanks also go to Carolyn Thompson who let us use her lovely garden in White Waltham to hold our summer

fundraising tea party on the 24 June. It was a fine afternoon

and everyone who attended enjoyed the tea and cakes and an opportunity to buy plants and win a raffle prize.

We will have a new programme of events in the Autumn,

details will be available nearer the time.

LETTER FROM NEW ZEALAND

Patience

Perhaps you would have wrung her neck weeks ago. To be accurate, we weren’t even sure she was a ‘she’ but we gave her the benefit of the doubt. Right now as we wake up each morning we see the lawn covered in a good frost but we also see that the sky is blue, the sun is shining and another sparkling winter day is with us.

Of course our thoughts cross the waves to you as so much is happening in England right now. We get live Wimbledon – it starts at midnight!! - And the Olympics are only days away as I write. We hear that the tennis has suffered a bit from the rain but Andy Murray is still going strong. Perhaps it will be a Scottish victory this year. Wouldn’t that be great?

Last year in early November we visited a farm away up the coast from here and came home with eight chicks, guaranteed females, eight or nine days old. We put them into a cage in our bathroom and gave them lots of tender loving care to say nothing of plenty of grower’s mash, water and various treats. They doubled in size every week so early in the new year they were shifted into a run in the garden. We had planned to keep four and the other quartet was for a friend. We had estimated that by Easter we would start getting lovely fresh eggs.

By now, the pullets were in their own run and stayed there for several weeks. Our friend came and collected her four and later told us that they had started laying but ours had not started. Now one of ours was a little different from the rest, she had a much longer tail (and we called her Long Tail) and she was half as big again as the others. We truly wondered whether she was a cockerel but the breeder assured us she was a hen. Now they are all very pretty, coal black from a distance but closer up you can see metallic shades of blue and green in their feathers . . . but Long Tail has yellow/brown stripes around her neck.

They were released to have free range in our garden but still no eggs and we were being told that they were probably laying away. We kept them in the run for three days and searched the garden diligently but no eggs were found.


Now the chickens did not enjoy being touched and would run away if we tried . . . until a couple of them let us stroke them and we realised that this sign of submission accompanies egg laying and shortly thereafter we were finding beautiful, if quite small, eggs in the run. Later a third hen started submitting to our caresses and some days there were three eggs to be collected.

Many days went by but Long Tail still ran away from us and there was no sign of her laying until one day just a couple of weeks ago, I went out to check for eggs and there was Long Tail sitting! A few minutes later, I was able to collect her first egg. Much bigger than the eggs laid by the others and she lays just about every day; not just larger eggs but richer in the colour of the yolks too.

As you should expect from me, there are things God’s Word says about being patient. For Christians James writes “Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”

But for those readers who have yet to accept Jesus Christ, Paul tells us that God is patient too: “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”

So to end – we waited for our harvest of eggs and have been rewarded. To you I say, be patient knowing that God is patient too but I have to ask you the question that Isaiah asked many years ago. “Will you try the patience of my God also?” Accept him today because if he accepted Paul who described himself as “the worst”, he will certainly accept you.

Tales from the Bells

We have had quite an eventful time during the month of June.

It may seem a distant memory, but I hope you all had a really good time during the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, what with street parties and fun days. An event, I doubt, that anyone will ever experience again for many years.

We were busy ringing for the celebrations. As you will see from the quarter peals that we rang, they were both on the same day. Three of us rang in both quarter peals which were an hour apart and both were 50 minutes long. It was quite exhausting. Not due to the amount of effort but more the concentration. Bob Packer and I would like to thank all the ringers who took part, especially Caroline as she had the most important task of conducting both quarter peals. And Jacquie and I need a pat on the back too.

Rung to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Once we ring a quarter peal it is sent to a publication called the Ringing World which is a special newspaper for bell ringers that is read worldwide. We also send the information for publication to our Branch Newsletter.

Our Sonning branch practice was held at Shottesbrooke this time and was literally a branch practice. Jacquie, one of our ringers, was going in to open up and a tree in the park came down in front of her, on the way to the church. It was a frightening experience for her. But the practice still went ahead and by the time we had finished the tree was cleared away.

We, the ringers of White Waltham and Shottesbrooke, hope that you all have or had a lovely holiday this summer.

Christian Aid 2012

What a wonderful job 19 collectors did this year. They exceeded last

year’s total and raised £1089.06 with some money still coming in.

Unfortunately one street could not be collected which makes the total

all the more amazing! Many thanks to all for contributing without you it

would be nothing.

£30.00 was also collected in church and sent to the East Africa Food

Crisis, and £14.00 was raised from the Three Counties Quiz. I would be

interested to hear how many winners there were.

* * * Exciting Project Rainbow News * * *

We have recently received some very exciting news from St Mary’s

Church in Maidenhead town centre. As part of the developing partnership between our churches, they are delighted to be supporting us. They will be raising funds for Project Rainbow as part of a much bigger fundraising project of their own that starts at the end of September. They have set themselves the target of raising £1.65 million in total for their work, with £250,000 of that for Project Rainbow! We are enormously grateful for their support and encouragement. That will bring us to over £400,000! We thank God for this gift, as we continue to raise funds in lots of different ways to bridge this final gap.

Project Rainbow is White Waltham Church’s building project which will construct purpose built accommodation to provide a base for the church’s work with families, giving a venue for both midweek and Sunday morning activities for children and young people. It will also provide a resource for church related activities for the whole local community during the week enabling the Church to better serve its local community.

Recent events...

The Project Rainbow Team ran an Icing the Biscuit Stall at White Waltham CofE Primary School’s May Fair. The stall raised almost £50 and a great deal of fun was had by all with some very impressive, highly artistic and even gravity defying biscuity creations.

The Waltham St Lawrence Silver Band Concert that took place on Wednesday 30 June raised £304.50. Of this £50 was donated to the Silver Band with the remaining £254.50 going to Project Rainbow. Our special thanks go to the Silver Band who provided us with some great music on a lovely summer’s evening, and to everyone who came along to enjoy the wonderful entertainment.


The Summer Musical Soiree hosted by Pippa Eden, Elizabeth Slade and their pupils on Saturday 30th June raised £152 for Project Rainbow. Our thanks go to all the musicians who entertained us and to their loyal supporters!

100 Mile Run and 3 mile walk, jog or run!

There are an estimated 13.4 million people in England who are so poor they cannot feed themselves every day.

IN MAIDENHEAD ALONE…

• Last year 700 people who were in severe financial difficulty went to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau. This is 700 individuals - behind these people there are husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and children.

• There are over 3000 children alone who do not have a meal everyday. The school holidays are the hardest time as they do not have access to school meals.

Maidenhead’s Foodshare is a charity that supports people who are in crisis and need food. Working closely with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau Foodshare is taking more food to more families each week; and each week more families are being put forward to receive supplies. Some of these families are awaiting benefits due to loss of jobs, some have lost partners and suddenly the main income has gone and some need food supplies for other reasons. All are in severe poverty and a couple are suffering from malnutrition because they are feeding their children rather than themselves and even then, there are times when the children are hungry as well.

Foodshare urgently needs supplies of food. Could you give a tin of food a week? Please consider how you could by giving:

Breakfast cereal, tea bags/coffee, fruit juice, tinned meat/fish, rice/pasta, pasta sauces, soup, jam, UHT milk, sugar, tinned vegetables, tinned tomatoes, instant mash, tinned puddings, biscuits/snack bars.

You can take your food donations to Quench Bookshop in Queen Street, the Maidenhead Advertiser in Bell Street, and Co-op Funeral Directors on the High Street. Along with many other churches White Waltham Church is also a collecting point for Foodshare – the Church is open for Sunday services and, through the summer, on a Tuesday from 12 noon - 2pm. Simply bring your food donations along and put them in the Foodshare box at the back of the Church.

Please help Foodshare support people in Maidenhead who are in crisis and need food.

Woodlands Park Primary School

We had a fantastic Summer at Woodlands Park, even though the

weather was not very seasonal! The excitement built up towards

London 2012 and the children have been trying hard to live the

Olympic values every day at school through various different projects.

We took part in the Schools Torch Relay and our two proud Torch

Bearers were presented with a commemorative plaque and an Olympic

souvenir at the presentation event at Bisham Abbey.

The Summer term was a term focused on sport all round and we were

very proud of our Rounders Team who came second in the inter-school

competition. We also held various sports and swimming events using

our own pool. Of course, it all culminated in our very own Olympic

Event Day which included an Opening Ceremony and medal

presentation.

In June, we held a very successful Summer Fun Day, featuring

Woodlands Park’s Got Talent. We were lucky with the weather and it

was lovely to see so many families enjoying a seasonal get together.

Woodlands Park is also very proud of our charitable fundraising this

year. We are a small school but our children and their families always

seem to put in that extra effort to raise money to help those less

fortunate than themselves. This year we have managed to raise just

under £3000 for our chosen charities, NSPCC, Children in Need, Sports

Relief and Sports Aid.

All the children and staff have worked very hard this year and this has

paid off with an increase once again in our academic results. We have

had some staff changes too and welcome Chris Pohl and Sarah Bailey

to our successful teaching team. Sadly, we have also said goodbye to

some of our staff who have been with us a long time. We wish them all

the best for the future.


We have many exciting learning opportunities planned for the coming

months including a visit to Windsor Castle, theatre visits and outdoor

and adventurous activities. September also sees us welcoming many

new families to Woodlands Park in our Foundation Stage and also into

our main school. We do still have some places in our nursery and if you

would like to see the school in action, please come along to our Open

Day on October 11th. You will be able to meet our wonderful teaching

and support team and see our children engaging in a range of wonderful

learning opportunities.

The purpose of the font

That Sunday our Family Service included two baptisms and many

young children were there. In his talk, the Vicar asked the children if

any of them knew what the font was for – and the answer came back:

“For washing babies’ hair”!


THE TORCH RELAY 2012!

Enormous anticipation! The Torch Relay in Maidenhead! Crowds excitedly line the streets. Five water stations at local churches on the route prepare. St Mary’s White Waltham and Boyn Hill Baptist join the St Mary’s Maidenhead station, where a large banner and loads of bunting welcome the eager spectators.

Eventually the first convoy with police outriders and big sponsor vehicles arrive, amidst loud shouts and cheers! Then, after the crowds have more drinks and lollipops, street entertainers precede the main ‘bubble’. Now the flame, in its golden torch, approaches, carried majestically down the High Street by a gentleman wearing his white and gold Olympic Torch track suit. The ever swelling crowds of children and their families unleash their enthusiasm on this historic day!

Then it is over. Everyone disappears.

The Olympics are nearly here…….

What a summer we have had so far... the rain has been persistent with the odd few spells of sunshine. No need to say the Hose Pipe Ban has been lifted. Let’s hope August will be sunny. The Jubilee parties around the villages have been superb and it’s not often we all get to meet our neighbours in such happy circumstances.

Olympics

The Council have been busy organising car parks for the Olympics where you can park and ride. Two come to mind that may be helpful – one at Stafferton Way and the other at the Windsor Race Course. If you need more information have a look at the website www.rbwm.gov.uk

Safe Place Scheme –

A new scheme called ‘Safe Place’ to help vulnerable people in the Royal Borough feel safer has been launched for vulnerable people. The Royal Borough is generally a safe place but sometimes for various reasons not everyone will feel completely safe A vulnerable person might be someone with a learning and/or physical disability, dementia or mental health problems or simply someone who is old, frail or ill who or is upset or in distress. Woodlands Park Community Centre have agreed to be a point for the SAFE PLACE SCHEME.

Small Businesses

The Royal Borough’s planning service is aiming to make life easier for small businesses with new measures that could include fast-track planning applications. to make the service more ‘user friendly’ for local businesses of 50 employees or fewer, encouraging them to develop and thrive within the local economy.

Also proposed for the future are variable planning fees that benefit small businesses and a package of support including:


� a guide to how the planning system works

� a named council contact for planning advice, and

� a review of the planning advice and decision-making process

to make sure it is speedy and timely – including a potential fast

track approach to development control.

Clamping Ban to Start 1st October

For the past three years the council has been fighting for the abolition of clamping on private land following the bitter experiences of both local residents and visitors at the hands of clamping companies which impose exorbitant fines for even minor parking errors. The Royal Borough does not use clamping in its own car parks and has in the past investigated the use of anti-social behaviour orders as way of cracking down on over-enthusiastic clamping companies operating locally. This is much welcome news.

Free Day Services for Older People at Lady Elizabeth House Maidenhead

New day services are to be introduced in Maidenhead later this year and will offer free admission for older people and a more streamlined system at lower cost to the council. Key elements of the move include:

• An enhanced free entry day service at Lady Elizabeth House in Boyn Hill Avenue, replacing the day service at Gardner House in Harrow Lane, will be available to the extra care tenants there as well as older people in Maidenhead

• A £50,000 programme of improvements at Lady Elizabeth House will ensure the centre can accommodate day visitors with appropriate and modern facilities

• Some service users will also be able to use the specialist dementia service at the Boyn Grove Community Resource Centre in Courthouse Road.

Day care services with trained care staff at Lady Elizabeth House – which will benefit from a fully equipped kitchen, social facilities and patio garden – will allow more residents to remain independent for longer while receiving support. As the service will be run by an external not-for-profit provider it will be free to users to attend although travel and lunch will have a charge as with most voluntary sector centres in the borough.

Your Local Budget – residents have their say on £225,000 of council spend

The annual launch in June of the Royal Borough’s participatory budget (PB) scheme – Your Local Budget – gives residents the opportunity to say where £225,000 of their council tax should be spent.


This is the third year of the ‘you tell us’ consultation and from Friday 22 June almost 62,000 questionnaires will be delivered to local homes giving residents the chance to rank their priorities on TWO lists of schemes:

• one offering £100,000 for priorities that would be of benefit across the borough and

• one offering £125,000 for schemes that would benefit people living in a particular area – Maidenhead, Windsor and Ascot & The Sunnings.

Voting will also be available online from Friday 22 June at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3JG2TF7

In the last two years since the scheme was launched residents’ involvement with the council has boosted highways improvements, provided more facilities for young people and given local communities the tools and supplies they asked for to grit key paths and footways in winter. Last year, as a result of overwhelming support, the Council installed a new pay-on-exit system in the main shoppers’ car park in Maidenhead town centre. Now it’s voting time again – have your say.

Neighbourhood Plan for Hurley and the Walthams

As we have mentioned before this is your plan for your area. The Plan is structured to look at five topics of our Ward – Transport, Business, Environment, Housing and Community. There are so many volunteers who have come forward to help with this Plan but volunteers from Woodlands Park are needed. If you feel that you would like to get involved in any of the above five topics please contact Cllr Maureen Hunt. Woodlands Park needs to be more fully represented so please do get involved.

Retro Festival at White Waltham Airfield

This festival is held in the evenings of the Wings and Wheels event. This year the organisers applied for an extension of hours. The event finishes at 11.00pm and an application for the sale of alcohol, live music and catering was submitted to the Council for an extension to 2.00am for Friday and Saturday night. Cllr Maureen Hunt objected and was joined in her objection with your Parish Council. We were astonished at the Hearing to learn that there are to be 3 stages on site for performers, camping out and caravans. We felt that this would cause a public nuisance particularly with the noise in our rural area. Fortunately this was turned down.


Speeding in Woodlands Park

Cllr Carwyn Cox is working with W4WP on this issue following complaints. We have previously had speed surveys conducted on Woodlands Park Rd and Waltham Rd.

Yellow Lines

There have been many complaints regarding parking at the junctions of Smithfield Rd with Woodlands Park Rd and Willant Close with Waltham Rd. This is a huge safety issue and it is proposed that yellow lines will be painted on these junctions. Also parking has been occurring on and around the roundabout at Foliejohn Way. Again a huge safety issue. Yellow lines will prevent this. It is hoped that the Council will be able to do this possibly late August/September.

Back Garden Infill

We have recently seen two applications for back garden infill in Woodlands Park Rd for six houses. Both these applications came to Development Control Panel (Planning panel) for discussion due to the number of houses submitted. Cllr Maureen Hunt and Cllr Carwyn Cox strongly objected as did your Parish Council and many many residents. Both applications were refused.
