i Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage Letter from the Vicarage Advent tugs us in two directions. Firstly, it unlocks the deep universal longing for God. Are you not aware of that longing? Why, then, do you cry “Oh my God!” every time something astonishing happens? Why, when grief strikes, do you bargain with a higher power you’re not even sure you believe in? Why, when you feel scared do you reach for half-forgotten prayers for help? Why, when you feel alone, do you hope that someone unseen will care and reach out? Atheists may try to explain our longing for God by telling us it is the deep buried longing of the inner infant for our parents to supply our needs, or merely the idealised projection of our own self-consciousness. They may think it naive, ignorant or even dangerous, but they cannot deny the longing, nor can they provide satisfaction for it. They can only explain it away. But it will not go away. Advent unlocks our longing to be relieved from the burdens of life: to experience once again the love of our departed ones; to be relieved from the constraints of our ageing bodies; to know ourselves truly loved; and to see justice, if not for the world, then at least for our own loved-ones. If only, despite our scepticism, there was some way to receive the assurance we long for, some realty behind the hope we cannot quite extinguish, a coming of the justice and peace without which everything we love will surely be destroyed. Those universal human longings push us towards a desire, however faint, for God, because only something beyond ourselves can give us what we long for, but cannot achieve. The cry of Advent is “Lord, come quickly!” But as we try to stir God into urgent action, we become grateful for his patience. What if he were to come now? Am I ready for that? Too often we are part of the problem rather than the solution. In truth, we are not quite ready for him. Advent tugs us simultaneously towards a longing for urgent resolution and towards greater patience. The answer to “Lord, come quickly” is “May the Lord, when he comes, find us watching and waiting”. It calls us both to wait patiently for God and to act urgently to turn around our own hearts. The practice of Advent fasting has long since been obliterated by ever-earlier encroachments of Christmas celebrations with irresistible gastronomic temptations. But perhaps we can find other ways to encourage a sense of patience, by resisting the ways in which we distract ourselves with activity, entertainment and relentless stimulation, and cultivating a patience that waits and unlocks our inner longing. Perhaps re-kindle the practice of prayer, or at the very least, practice a little boredom. For when our longing turns into watching and waiting, we find that God comes surprisingly soon, to assure us of the things we most long for. He appears as something so surprising, yet so familiar, not as thunderbolts and fire, but us a baby. The God who made us in his image, appears in our image to meet our deepest longing, to reward our patience and to assure us of the reality behind our hope. Advent tugs us in two directions.

POSADA

POSADA is the Mexican tradition of people dressing up as Mary and Joseph and going from house to house to tell about Jesus and the Christmas story. Our parish POSADA is a much simpler tradition and one in which it is easy for you to participate. We have a knitted nativity scene which during Advent will begin to appear, piece by piece, in St Lawrence Church, Morland. During Ad-vent the figures of Mary and Joseph will travel around the parish staying in people’s homes for one night. Their journey will begin at the Family Advent Service on Sunday 2nd December, 11 o’clock at Great Strickland church and end when the last family on the list brings them to the Crib Service at St Lawrence’s Morland on Christmas Eve at 5 o’clock.

If you would like to give Mary and Joseph lodgings for a night dur-ing Advent, please contact me and I will put you on the list. The peo-ple bringing Mary and Joseph to you will read out a simple giving prayer, then there is an equally simple receiving prayer to be read out. This lovely tradition is open to all families in our parish and school.

Please email me with your name, address and telephone number and any dates you cannot do. If you have any questions please do call, email or ask if you see me out walking! Thank you!

next session

Monday 3rd December

2-4pm

This will be an informal group and anyone who has suffered

the loss of someone close to them either recently or some time

ago, is invited. We will not be following a programme and will not offer counselling – simply the

opportunity to talk about what is on your mind and share your feelings with

others who may have felt the same. Grief affects everyone in different ways and a

support group doesn’t appeal to everyone, but if you feel the need to chat over a

cup of tea and a biscuit, please come along.

ASKHAM AND HELTON LADIES CLUB

Askham and Helton Ladies Club was formed over 50 years ago, we meet in the village hall on the second Wednesday of every month, 7.30pm in Summer and 2pm in Winter when we have a speaker followed by light refreshments and a natter with friends. There is always a competition. About twice a year we go on outside visits instead of being in the hall; in April every year we have our Spring Lunch. On the Fourth Wednesday we go somewhere local and have a lovely friendly get together. You don’t have to live in Askham or Helton to be a member, we have people from a vari-ety of places in the area. If you think you would like to come along to a meeting some time, you would be wel-come as a visitor. You can contact Marie Armstrong on 01768 866932

Celebrate the festive season at Bolton Memorial Hal l

On Sunday December 2nd

with a mesmerising one-man performance by David Myn ne

of Charles Dickens' timeless, transformative story:

A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Bah! Bah!

Spend an evening in the company of a mean, tight-fisted, squeezing, grasping, clutching old miser. Bah!

Watch horrified as Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by four creepy ghosts (wooo-oooh) each one more terrifying than the last. Bah!

Sob at the bedside of a tiny, malnourished child riven with rickets. Bah!

Yes, the team that brought you Great Expectations, Dracula and The Odyssey will now take you on a grim journey through the dark, dismal streets of Victorian London, where Ignorance and Want cower together...

...and hopefully a few laughs. Bah!

At Bolton Memorial Hall on Sunday 2 nd December at 7.30pm (Bar opens at 7pm)

Tickets from [email protected] , 017683 62862. Adults £9, children £4.50

Thanks to Highlights Rural Touring Company.

Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple There will be a candlelit Holy Communion Service at Ninekirks to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation on February 3rd at 2.00 pm. This should be a very special occasion. We recall the Presentation every time we sing the Nunc Dimittis at Evensong, echoing the aged Simeon as he recognised the infant Je-sus for who he was. We should assume that it will not be possible to drive down to Ninekirks in February, so please allow time to walk. If the weather is hopelessly impossible, the service will take place at Brougham Chapel. Sarah Harden will make the decision on that point. If you are in doubt, phone her on 07801 099151.

In rural locations such as ours, it can take a while before emergency services reach us for many reasons. Have you ever wondered about what you could do to help a grandchild, child, parent, family member or friend if they were to suddenly have a medical emergency? Could you do what may be necessary for them until the emergency services arrive? Maybe you would like to learn practical emergency first aid for a workplace or home situation and gain a nationally recognised qualification in the comfort of your own locality. Why not join us for a one-day Emergency First Aid course and learn practical skills and gain a national qualification? We will also teach you basic CPR and practical use of a defibrillator, important in the preservation of life in cases of cardiac arrest. We will run courses on demand in our local villages ensuring that we support local community halls at a subsidised cost of £60 per person inc.VAT (normal price (£102) which includes 6 hours of learning, first aid manual, 3-year qualification certificate, tea and coffee. Call 07920 463172 or email us at [email protected] for details. The Resuscitation Council (UK) has identified that the immediate initiation of by-stander CPR can double or quadruple survival from out-of-hospital cardiac ar-rest. Despite this compelling evidence, only 40% of victims receive bystander CPR in the UK. Defibrillation within 3–5 min of collapse can produce survival rates as high as 50–70%. This can be achieved through public access defibrillation, when a by-stander uses a nearby AED to deliver the first shock. Each minute of delay to defib-rillation reduces the probability of survival to hospital discharge by 10%. In the UK, fewer than 2% of victims have an AED deployed before the ambulance arrives.
