Dear Friends,

Well, how did you enjoy the Games, then?

By popular acclaim, they have been hailed as a great success, with even

the most ardent sceptics apparently won over (or at least reduced to

silence). And as a result, the mood of the country has been lifted.

Partly, no doubt, that is due to the success of the British teams. But

partly too it seems to be a reaction of pleasant surprise that we actually

managed to organise something that went really well, where everything

(even the transport) seemed to work, and with none of the dire problems

that had been predicted in advance.

By the time you read this, it’s possible that that mood will have

evaporated, with the political party conferences focussing attention back

on economic gloom and austerity. And of course it’s true that none of

those realities have gone away over the summer.

But the difference has been that the media have been filled with good

news stories — and perhaps there is a lasting lesson in that. The

Apostle Paul wrote: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is

right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if

anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.”

(Philippians 4:8) How different that is from the diet normally served up

by our news media!

That is not to say that the things that are wrong with the world should

just be ignored; but too often the balance seems to be entirely wrong,

and we are faced continually with stories of bad news (which we are

generally powerless to do anything about), while the good news is

reduced to just a footnote, if that.

So perhaps one practical lesson we can all learn from London 2012 is

not to pay so much attention to the bad news, and focus instead (as Paul

encourages us to), on what is good. Then we might just find that the

mood which characterised the summer — the mood which was so

evident at the Olympic venues, with people smiling, chatting to

strangers, and being genuinely appreciative of all that was going on —

gets carried over into ‘normal life’. And that life itself will be all the

richer for it.

Remembrance Sunday Collections at White Waltham Church

On Remembrance Sunday a collection is taken during the Remembrance Service in White Waltham Church. As usual, the proceeds of that collection will this year be shared between two charities: the Royal British Legion and Combat Stress.

The Royal British Legion supports people who have served in our Armed Forces and their families and dependants in times of need. Around 9 million people in the UK are eligible for their help and the Legion spends almost £1.7 million a week helping those in greatest need. Examples of the support they offer includes:

• providing help when applying for compensation and benefits, • advice in managing money • offering guidance and information on leaving the army • providing education and retraining for those having trouble

finding work when they have left the army • giving emotional support at times of bereavement

The Royal British Legion also runs six care homes providing care for serving and ex-service people and their dependants.

Combat Stress is the leading UK charity specialising in the care of Veteran’s mental ill health including those suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, paranoia or depression as a direct result of their service. Combat stress helps in the following ways:

• they operate a 24 hour telephone helpline • they have a community outreach service • they run residential centres offering clinical treatment • they have programmes providing treatment and rehabilitation

None of these services are routinely available on the NHS or elsewhere.

This year Remembrance Sunday is 11 November. The service at White Waltham Church will start at 10.45am and will be followed by a walk to the War Memorial in White Waltham where there will be a short act of Remembrance.

LETTER FROM NEW ZEALAND

When Things turn to Custard

Now my guess is that everyone who reads this will be able to relate to this topic from some time or event in their lives in the past when things did indeed turn to custard

Now the picture is like this: through the internet and some past contacts, we learn of a dire situation, one in which we believe we might be able to help. Without giving away confidentiality, we learned of a family which had been experiencing severe difficulties. Several children aged from toddlers to teenagers suffered the tragic loss of their mother some months ago. Dad decided to accept help from his Mum who lived many hundreds of kilometres away and on New Zealand’s other main island, and transported his children there.

We assume things went quite well for a while but then his mother sadly died earlier this year. This time his Dad offered some help. Dad lived several kilometres away. They travelled there and tried to settle . . . but Dad’s help was not really there aside from finding them a place to stay. Things gradually went from bad to worse and so to cut that part of the story short, they had to leave that place in a hurry.

Their car was old but roadworthy; it could not cope with all of their luggage and all of the children. Arrangements had to be made for the older children to travel separately by bus. At some point, Dad asked for advice on the internet and so started the whole chain of events in which we became deeply involved. The family had decided to return to our part of New Zealand. Remember that is several hundred kilometres including a ferry crossing; organising buses for the older children and times and places to meet together at each stage of the journey.

By now as a result of Dad’s request for advice, an internet thread had been started asking subscribers for help and donations started to roll in. We had agreed to do what we could when they arrived in our area. To get help from Social Services one needs an address and clearly they didn’t have one, so that seemed to be a real priority. One friend arranged and paid for motel accommodation for two nights and we had to help them get the whole family in their vehicle and ours, from where they had found temporary accommodation in the town where they used to live and where they had friends and contacts. We were able to buy necessary clothes for the children and then helped them to the motel. This went quite well and gave them a break. We had found a possible rental home which might suit them and we all went to see it.


Another friend had offered them accommodation in her home until they could settle on the rental. But by now the awful strain was beginning to tell. It became clear that they could not stay at that address and so we helped them to travel back to where they used to live.

The accommodation is not great but they have been told that they can stay there until they can settle on a place of their own. The children are back in school or pre-school, Dad has been helped to buy a vehicle large enough for all the family so it sounds good wouldn’t you say?

Now the “custard”! The person who has been organising the fund raising has been badly vilified on the internet and accused of being “in it” to make money for herself – this we know to be completely untrue as the funds raised enabled the vehicle to be bought and also bunk beds and bedding which would be necessary once they find a place.

The lady who had offered her home suffered quite a bit of damage with a broken window and bedding fouled which needed commercial cleaning. But the worst part was when we had to suffer abuse from Dad (clearly very stressed at this point) who accused all and sundry of trying to take over his life. He felt that all decisions had been taken away from him and he certainly came across as ungrateful and unappreciative of what we and many others have been trying to do.

That’s virtually where we are now. But he has calmed down quite a bit especially as we discovered that the person who runs the property where they are living now, is a friend of ours and has given them a special deal involving three rooms rather than the single room they used earlier.

Many of those who have been helping are Christians and others are not. It has been good to see folk all over New Zealand, who did not know each other, coming together to try to provide a safety net for this family. But almost everyone who has become involved is hurting. Some have become ill, perhaps with the strain of it all. Why should helping someone like this, at personal, financial and emotional cost to ourselves, turn to custard in such unpleasant ways?

Then it is that we, who love the Lord Jesus and who allow Him to have authority in our lives, realise afresh that it is only when things turned to custard for Him as He was executed for only ever doing good, that enables us to bear what is such small discomfort compared to His sufferings. I hope many of you will pray for this family which has such a long way to go. Are we put off from such efforts? No, if the need arises again, we shall do what we can. We believe that this family came into our lives as a part of God’s plan and we always want to be in that plan too.

Once again we were busy ringing quarter peals for different celebrations. Firstly, to mark the opening of the Olympic Games. Followed by a personal celebration of one of our ringers. To mark the opening of the To celebrate the 70th birthday, this day,

London 2012 Olympics. of Derek Brayne, fellow ringer.

On the same day of the opening ceremony of the Olympics; in the morning at 8.12am it was suggested that as many bells in the country were rung as possible. At White Waltham the number 3 bell was rung rapidly for three minutes.

White Waltham has had an inspection from the Tower and Belfries Committee of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers.

This inspection is entered into by the tower voluntarily. The inspection takes about an hour to be carried out and I felt nervous as if I was taking an exam during the inspection. At the time I had no idea what the result was going to be.

I have since found out that we have been awarded a Silver Award at White Waltham. We just missed out on a Gold Award by 4% (9 points) but we did do better than last time when we only gained a Bronze. We are very pleased with the result and that our tower is judged as being kept well and in good working order.

The award will be valid for the next three years so let’s hope we are able to maintain the Silver, or who knows maybe higher.

Recent events...

The Project Rainbow Team ran a stall at the Church Fete. The stall raised £95 selling jams, chutneys and preserves. Our thanks to everyone who came aong and supported Project Rainbow at this event.

Bob Crittenden and Andy Eden have completed their 100 mile run along the Thames Path from Lechlade to Maidenhead. They ran the 100 miles over 3 days from 13

th-

15th

September. Day 1 saw them covering the 33 miles from Lechlade to Oxford. The Bishop of Oxford gave them a send off on day 2 when they ran a whopping 37 miles to Caversham. On day 3 they ran the remaining 30 miles to Maidenhead where they were greeted by friends and supporters at Jenner’s Riverside Cafe.

Bob and Andy enjoyed some company from friends and family on the final leg of their journey, and some supporters took to the Thames Towpath in a shorter sponsored event on the Saturday. Churchwarden, Liz Atlay, led a three mile sponsored walk from Cookham to Maidenhead and ex Project Rainbow Chairman, Jenny Murphy, took pole position in a 1 mile sponsored wheelchair push beside the river in Maidenhead (see the picture at the top of page 19 of Jenny and supporters at the finishing line).

Project Rainbow is White Waltham Church’s building project which will construct purpose built accommodation to provide a base for the church’s work with families, giving a venue for both midweek and Sunday morning activities for children and young people. It will also provide a resource for church related activities for the whole local community during the week enabling the Church to better serve its local community.

OLYMPIC INTERVIEW

At the September family service based on 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, I had the

tremendous privilege of interviewing Richard Chambers. Richard won a silver

medal as part of the lightweight men’s four rowing crew in the London 2012

Olympics. During the interview we learned about the daily routine of an elite

rower and the tremendous dedication that is needed to reach the top of the

sport. He also explained that at most of his competitions the euphoria of

winning is often short-lived because the team usually fly straight back to

training after each competition; however he has been able to enjoy this one

much more as he takes a well-earned break before starting training for next

season. Richard’s wife Abi and son Joshua were also present and stayed with

us after the service for coffee and a chat and to allow us to look at his medal,

which is huge and very heavy. Richard is a committed Christian and a

member of the congregation at St Mary’s in Maidenhead and his agreement

to help us with our service is an example of the growing bond between our

churches.

Woodlands Park Primary School

We have had a busy start to the autumn term and have enjoyed welcoming many new children and their families to Woodlands Park School. We also

welcome new staff with Sarah Bailey in the Foundation Stage and Chris Pohl

in Year One and Laura Hopper has returned as a part time teacher.

In the classroom we will build on our successes from last year where, once

again, whole school and end of key stage two results continue to improve. We have introduced a parent club to ensure that all our Foundation and Key Stage

One parents understand how we teach phonics, so they can support their

children at home. We have also had the opportunity to run a number of courses for parents including Paediatric First Aid and a ‘Helping in School’

accredited course.

This term the whole school has taken part in a project on Kings and Queens.

Castles are springing up everywhere in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

The project will culminate in a whole school trip to Windsor Castle.

The year five and six children are busy rehearsing their own version of

Macbeth in preparation for the ‘Shakespeare, As You Like It’ Festival at Norden Farm in November.

The children have also been busy working in the school grounds, planting vegetables and looking after the birds and wildlife. Our Environment Club has

been extremely busy ensuring that it all runs smoothly.

This term is always an exciting one as we celebrate Harvest and begin to think

about Christmas. The children have been rehearsing songs in preparation for

our Harvest Festival Assembly and we will be inviting parents and family members to a special Harvest lunch prepared by our cook, Mrs Brind.

Church Fete On Saturday the 14th of July we held our annual Church Summer fete

at White Waltham School. It was intended to be on the Cricket Pitch in

the village but due to the very wet summer weather we had to move at

the last moment.

We would like to say a big Thank You to the school for accommodating

us at the last minute and a grateful thanks to all who helped and

supported us.

We raised £1150 for Shottesbrooke and White Waltham Churches.

Next year’s Summer Fete will be on Saturday 13th July. Please put

the date in your diary and come and support us.

Although the weather has been pretty much a wash out for the summer,

I’m sure you will all agree the Olympics were superb. The RBWM

have been very involved with the events at Eton Dorney as Eton is in

our Borough. This has meant allocating the park and ride areas

throughout Maidenhead, Eton and Windsor and ensuring all the

residential roads around the area are kept clear. Diversions etc. had to

be put in place as well as all those many extra contingencies. It has

been ‘a once in a lifetime’ event for many of us to have part of the

Olympics in our Borough and the council have really done us all proud

with the amount of very successful organisation involved.

Council News

New Food Waste Collection

From Monday 8 October food waste will be collected throughout the

borough on the same day as the rubbish and recycling collections with

food caddies having being delivered from (week commencing Monday

10 September).

All food waste – including cooked food, dairy, meat and bones – can be

put in the caddies.

The move is good news for the council’s budget and for the

environment as it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill. When

food rots in landfill it releases methane, a gas 23 times more potent at

warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Food makes up over one third of the contents of our black bins and

sending it to landfill is simply not sustainable.

One ton of food waste collected will save the council approximately

£35 in waste disposal costs which is great news for council taxpayers!

Every household is currently being provided with a 23-litre caddy to go

outside and a 7-litre caddy for use in the kitchen.


In addition an information leaflet is being delivered separately

explaining how the scheme will work, what to put into the caddy and

other useful information for the householder.

The waste will be taken to a new, state-of-the-art digester plant being

built in Oxfordshire where it will be turned into compost for local farms

and potentially creating enough electricity to power 4,200 homes and

saving just over 10,000 tons of carbon.

Nectar Scheme

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and Nectar have

launched a pioneering pilot scheme which will see residents being

rewarded with Nectar points for a variety of positive activities affecting

the local community.

The pilot scheme will reward residents for:

Switching to easier ways of managing their Council Tax bills – The Royal Borough aims to make it as easy as possible for residents to pay.

Now, they will be able to collect up to 1,000 Nectar points if they switch to more efficient, environmentally friendly methods of receiving and

paying Council Tax bills.

Volunteering – The Royal Borough is working in partnership with Windsor and Maidenhead Voluntary Action (WMVA) to encourage

residents to volunteer. Residents will be awarded 1,500 Nectar points for

registering with WMVA and an additional 1,000 points each time they

begin a new volunteer placement. Adopting a street or local area - Adopt-a-Street gives residents the

opportunity to help keep the Royal Borough clean and tidy. Residents

simply choose the street or area they want to ‘adopt’ and the Council provides them with the necessary tools to take part. Residents will be able

to collect 500 Nectar points when they register with Adopt-a-Street and an

additional 1,000 Nectar points each time they tidy their adopted area. To get involved in any of the above initiatives and to start earning points,

residents can register at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/nectar.

Reward of £1000.

The council of course were also very involved with the Jubilee as

Windsor is in our Borough. To celebrate this momentous event of the

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee a fountain was constructed in The Goswells in Windsor.


This very beautiful and very much-admired landmark fountain has been

vandalised and more than 60 of the water jets were snapped off in an

incident described as 'mindless vandalism' which caused an estimated

£1,500 worth of damage.

The Royal Borough is offering a £1,000 reward for information that

leads to finding the culprit/s Anyone who has information on this

incident which took place at the end of September should contact

Kevin Mist, head of leisure services, on 01628 796443.

Neighbourhood Plan

After lots of hard work by volunteers from our Ward, many from

Shottesbrooke and Woodlands Park, the date for the first drop in event

has been set for Friday 19th

October between 6-9.00pm at White

Waltham Village Hall and Saturday 3rd

November 10.30am -1.30pm

at Woodlands Park Community Centre. It is really important that you

drop in for 5mins or 50mins so that your comments can be taken into

account. For the first time you have the chance to say how you would

like to see your area in the next 10-15 years.

Parish Councillors, Village Associations and Residents have been so

willing to offer their help getting involved and there are now Village

Communicators organised to let you know about this date for the first

consultation.

A leaflet will be sent to every household so please do read this and

come along on either 19th October or 3

rd November. Also see notice on

page 22 of this magazine.

In order to ensure that all of Berkshire has a chance of getting some of the

fastest broadband speeds in the country, Berkshire is running a sign-up

campaign to get households and businesses to register their support for an

register. There is also a broadband speed checker by post code and an

opportunity to comment on both the current service and what level of

Skimming/cloning device at cash points

This has come through from the Thames Valley Police

How can I tell if a cash point is fitted with a skimming/cloning

device? • These devices are used to capture credit and debit card details from

unsuspecting members of the public at cash points. These details are

used to recreate an exact copy of your card and gain access to your money.

• The devices are usually fitted on the cash machines card entry slot to copy the magnetic strip details of a card as it is inserted into the

machine.

• Sometimes a mini camera is located above the keypad to film the customer entering their PIN number.

• Customers who shield the keypad when they enter their PIN are much less likely to fall victim to this type of fraud.

• If you suspect that a skimming device has been attached to a cash machine, inform staff within the bank or building society or if closed

ring the police on 101.
