The New Monterey Bay League

High School Athletics governed by California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)

CIF divided into geographic sections. We are the Central Coast Section (CCS)-- San Francisco to King City

CCS divided into 3 geographic conferences: Northern, Central & Southern. Each conference has a number of leagues.

The Southern Conference Leagues-- Mission Trails Athletic (MTAL), Monterey Bay (MBL), Santa Cruz Coast Athletic (SCCAL) & TriCounty Athletic (TCAL)

CCS By-laws allow league configuration review every 2 years. Conference schools engage in realignment talks. What is best for student-athletes and high school sports?

March 2011- Southern Conference leagues discuss realignment. Proposal made to merge MBL & TCAL and create larger “Equity” league

Overwhelming vote (38-1) in favor to form new league

2012-13 new league comes into existence From 7 schools to 15

MBL Equity LeagueEquity league schools divide into 2 or more

divisionsEach division has at least 6 schools competingEach division is “League” unto itself with

division champions and CCS playoff qualifier(s)Schools placed in division for each sport based

on strength of program in that sportDivision A: MBL-Gabilan Division B: MBL-Pacific

MBL- Gabilan & MBL- Pacific

Schools may be placed in MBL- Gabilan for one sport & in MBL- Pacific for another depending on strength of particular sports program

Division placement reviewed by league every year

Example of one program in different divisions: Basketball teams- Boys in Gabilan and Girls in Pacific, or Boys in Pacific and Girls in Gabilan

What is the benefit of being an Equity League?

Principal Benefit: To give student-athletes more opportunities and enriching experiences by grouping schools with similar competitive strength

Often participation levels increase with equitable play- along with the fun!

Long standing history of successful equity leagues within the CCS have shown positive results

Other CCS equity leagues: Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL), Peninsula Athletic League (PAL), Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL)

Who governs the new Monterey Bay League?

Board of Managers: Every CIF/CCS league is governed by Principals, Administrators, and/or designee representing each school within the league

Athletic Directors: The BOM receives recommendations from each director representing each school within the league

Coaches: The AD receives input and recommendations from their school’s coaches

December 2011: First-time meeting of the newly created 15 member MBL Board of Managers. Divisions MBL-Gabilan & MBL- Pacific are approved

What are the next steps for the New MBL?

MBL Athletic Directors continue to meet throughout the school year to make recommendations to the Board of Managers regarding sport-by-sport team division placement, general by-laws and operating plans, and individual sport by-laws

MBL leaders plan to have everything in place, including a league budget, by the end of the 2011-12 school year and be ready for the 2012-13 sports seasons

How does it affect our school?

Anticipate the competitive experience will be more exciting and gratifying for student-athletes and fans alike.

New competition can bring new relationships and new opportunities.

Athletic league life will be changed for each school in the

new league

League schools in each sport may differ. Teams may not

always see the same schools in each sport

Teams may differ significantly from those we have grown

accustomed to in recent years
