THE COLLECT - Fourth Sunday in Lent (Page 164 BCP) Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that He may live in us, and we in Him: who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever. Amen.

Ash Wednesday Collect (Page 163 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: Our Old Testament reading tells how Judah, because of its unfaithfulness, was utterly defeated by the Chaldeans. The survivors were taken away into exile in Babylon until it was the Lord’s will to restore Jerusalem through the agency of King Cyrus of Persia.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Janice Hassig 9:15a.m. - Aileen Cummins

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): 2 Chronicles 36:14-23 King Zedekiah and all the leading priests and the people were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place; but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, till the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, till there was no remedy. Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged; he gave them all into his hand. And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. And they burned the house of God, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious vessels. He took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfil the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept sabbath, to fulfil seventy years. Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing: "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, `The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the Lord his God be with him. Let him go up.'"

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A pilgrim’s song of praise and prayer for the peace of Jerusalem.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 122 (7:30a.m. - Page 641 BCP)

1. I WAS glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord. 2. Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem. 3. Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself. 4. For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5. For there is the seat of judgement : even the seat of the house of David. 6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee. 7. Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces. 8. For my brethren and companions’ sakes : I will wish thee prosperity. 9. Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God : I will seek to do thee good.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: This New Testament passage emphasizes the manner in which Christians have been saved by God’s free gift.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Joan Hinds 9:15a.m. - Church Army

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 2:4-10

God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God -- not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

GRADUAL HYMN - 314

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel is the story of the feeding of the five thousand people by Jesus. The narrative recalls the story of the food miraculously provided to the Israelites in the wilderness. So do the people declare Jesus to be the new prophet whom God had promised to raise up in Moses’ place. But then they misunderstand Jesus’ mission and want to make him a king because he has provided them with food. The story contains a number of other themes. The twelve baskets of fragments may signify the mission to the Gentile nations. Christians perceive in this meal a foretaste of the messianic banquet in heaven. It also prefigures the Eucharist. Jesus is the bread come down from heaven.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 6:4-15 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a multitude was coming to him, Jesus said to Philip, "How are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" This he said to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?" Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place; so the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world!" Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountains by himself.

THE SERMON

HYMN AFTER THE SERMON—644 / 518

THE NICENE CREED - Page 104 Bidding Prayer

Let us pray to God for the Church and for the world, giving thanks for the gift of his Son.

May the Church be filled with the light of faith and proclaim the message of salvation…Strengthen her ministers to serve the Son of God in word and sacrament so that his glory may be lifted up in the sight of all.

We pray for peace among nations, for the light to shine in the dark places of strife and violence and reveal to those who are in conflict their shared humanity…May God’s love for the world be honoured by the people of the world now and in time to come.

As we praise God for the love that sent his Son, we pray that we may have that love for those with whom we share our lives…Give light to direct all that we do together and all the work of this community.

Have mercy on those who have loved darkness rather than light and have fallen into the grip of evil…Release them by the love of the Son, raised on the Cross for sinners and raised from death that they might have life.

We pray for the departed who have lived their lives in faith and at the last have not perished but come to eternal life…Grant to us to follow their example and share with them the fruit of the same promise.

May our prayers be accepted through Christ, the Saviour of the world. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN - 571 A&M

SING to the Lord the children’s hymn, His gentle love declare, Who bends amid the Seraphim To hear the children’s prayer.

He at a mother’s breast was fed, Though God’s own Son was He; He learnt the first small words He said At a meek mother’s knee.

Close to His loving Heart He press’d

The children of the earth; He lifted up His hands and bless’d The babes of human birth.

Lo! from the stars His Face will turn On us with glances mild; The Angels of His Presence yearn To bless the little child.

Keep us, O Jesus, Lord, for Thee, That so, by Thy dear grace, We, children of the Font, may see Our Heavenly Father’s face.

RECESSIONAL HYMN - Ye who own the Faith of Jesus

Ye who own the faith of Jesus, Sing the wonders that were done, When the love of God the Father O’er our sin the victory won; When He made the Virgin Mary Mother of His only Son Hail Mary, Hail Mary Hail, Mary full of grace

Blessed were the chosen people Out of whom the Lord did come, Blessed was the land of promise Fashioned for His earthly home; But more blessed far the Mother, She who bare Him in Her womb.

Wherefore let all faithful people Tell the honour of her name, Let the Church in her foreshadowed Part in her thanksgiving claim; What Christ’s Mother sang in gladness Let Christ’s people sing the same

Let us weave our supplications,

She with us and we with her, For the advancement of the faithful, For each faithful worshipper, For the doubting, for the sinful, For each heedless wanderer.

May the Mother’s intercessions

On our homes a blessing win, That our children all be prospered, Strong and fair and pure within, Following our Lord’s own footsteps, Firm in faith and free from sin.

For the sick and for the aged, For our dear ones far away, For our hearts that mourn in secret, All who need our prayers to-day, For the faithful gone before us, May the holy Virgin pray.

Praise, O Mary, Praise the Father, Praise thy Saviour and thy Son, Praise the everlasting Spirit, Who hath made thee ark and throne O’er all creatures high exalted, Lowly praise the Three in one.

Smile: A cheerful truck driver pulled up at a roadside cafe in the middle of the night for a dinner stop. Halfway through his meal, three wild- looking motorcyclists roared up--bearded, leather-jacketed, filthy. For no reason at all, they selected the truck driver as a target. One poured pepper over his head, another stole his apple pie, the third deliberately tipped his coffee over. The truck driver never said one word, just stood up, paid his check, and left. "That truck driver sure ain't much of a fighter," sneered one of the bikers. The girl behind the counter, peering out into the night, added, "He doesn't seem to be much of a truck driver, either. He just ran his truck right over three motorcycles."
