High Mass The Most Holy Trinity | May 26, 2013 | 10:30 am
Welcome
Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are
fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please
help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.
VISION STATEMENT
Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a
Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
MISSION OBJECTIVES
•To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and
welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;
• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;
• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among
parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;
• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within
and beyond the Parish;
•To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our
assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to
generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass
If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the
Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.
In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.
Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.
Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the
church on the opposite side to the entrance.
Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the
service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books just in front of the piano, and
in the back of the church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make
an appointment.
The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to
participate in the Mass.
The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to
those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also
customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.
You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and
prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.
We adore you,
most Holy Lord Jesus Christ
here and in all your churches throughout all the world;
and we bless you because
by your Holy Cross
you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection
The picture on the front cover is of an icon painted in 1411 (or possibly 1425-27) by
the Russian painter Andrei Rublev. The original is currently held in the Tretyakov
Gallery in Moscow. It’s inspiration was the Biblical story of three angels who visited
Abraham and Sarah near the great trees of Mamre. The angels are depicted in equal
dignity, and thought to represent the triunity and equality of all three persons of the
Holy Trinity.
Batter my heart, three-personed God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurped town to another due,
Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betrothed unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
John Donne 1572-1631

The Liturgy of the Word
OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the book of Proverbs.
Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights,
beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the
town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: "To you, O people, I call, and my cry is
to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of
long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When
there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with
water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth -
when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil. When he
established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when
he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he
assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when
he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race." Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31

The word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first ; all repeat it thereafter.
Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you
have set in their courses,
What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son of man that you should seek
him out?
You have made him but little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and
honour. Antiphon Psalm 8:2, 4-6
EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.
Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in
our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces
character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Romans 5:1-5
Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

evermore. Alleluia. Benedíctus es (Mode V)
THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When
the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his
own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to
come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All
that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and
declare it to you." John 16:12-15

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places,
give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God,
creator and preserver of all things.
For with thy co-eternal son and Holy Spirit, thou art one God, one Lord, in trinity of
persons and in unity of substance; and we celebrate the one and equal glory of thee,
O Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven,
we laud and magnify thy glorious name;
evermore praising thee and singing:

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy
tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to
suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect
sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming
again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks
to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which
is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins:
Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt cæli et terra Gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.
+ Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.
+ Blessed is he that cometh in the name of
the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
16 | HIGH MASS
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word
and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be
unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,
Lord our God.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and
bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may
worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled
with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church
may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the
same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and
glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

-real whipped cream
-fancy sandwiches
-live music
Back by popular demand is the Mothers’ Union Edwardian Strawberry Tea to be held
Sunday, June 23, after High Mass, in the Parish Hall. It will be replacing the normal coffee
hour on that Sunday. Again we will be offering home-made sandwiches, strawberry
shortcake with freshly picked BC strawberries and whipping cream, and tea and coffee. There
will be musical entertainment and recitations.
It is hoped that parishioners will get into the spirit of Edwardian England by wearing a fancy
hat or fascinator for the women; bowtie, cravat, waistcoat and/or boater for the men.
If you have holiday plans for that weekend and know you will be away, but would like to
purchase a ticket for someone who cannot afford the $10 charge, this would be most
appreciated. Last year we were able to give away approximately 10 tickets.
Children under 8 are free. The
proceeds will be donated to the MU

SABBATICAL REVIEW UPDATE
Well, feedback comes in many forms. The cartoon
below was sent to me by a parishioner who had been
part of the interviews last week! How we make
disciples, rather how we are nurtured and grow as
disciples at St. James’, is at the heart of this season of
review and examination.
Here’s where we are at with the review process:
Much of the groundwork has now happened to
update the Parish Profile. However, this needs to be
completed and shared with the Parish.
I’m exploring with the Parish leadership how an
assessment and interpretation can be made of the
Parish Profile. This could then be offered to the
Parish to facilitate discussion through workshops,
forums and interviews as a complement to the
servant leadership bodies of the Trustees and Parish
Council.
After the experience with the test sample of
consultation interviews, a second stage may be to
interview the Parish leadership in order to further
this season of review.
If you would like more information please contact
the Office for a copy of the proposal for the
sabbatical review (we are now entering phase two for
those of you who are following closely), or the
resource of topics and questions for the consultation
interviews.
Please speak to me, or the Wardens, if you have any
queries, or would like to support us in this review
season at St. James’. We would be delighted to hear
from you.

FREE VIEWING OF WE WERE CHILDREN
June 11 7:00pm
For over 100 years, Aboriginal children in Canada
were legally required to attend church-run boarding
schools, an assimilationist practice now regarded as
a national and cultural tragedy. We Were Children
tells the heartbreaking true story of Lyna Hart and
Glen Anaquod, removed from their homes at the
ages of four and six and forced to adapt to a strange,
threatening new world. Blending stunning dramatic
storytelling with unflinching documentary
narratives, director Tim Wolochatiuk’s film gives
voice to two children trapped in a system that would
impact their lives forever. Co-produced by Eagle

HIGH MASS CHOIR FUNDRAISER
The choir regrets to announce the cancellation of its
year-end concert, scheduled for June 14th.
Coming as it did at the end of the choral season; the
date meant that simply not enough members were
available to do justice to the challenging program.
We thank all those who helped with the preliminary
organizing of the event, including donating items
for the silent auction. We will consider a similar
event in 2013-2014, but at a different time of the
year!

COMPOST SALE: Monday June 17th $5 bag
On June 17th at 7:30am we will have fifteen yards of screened
compost delivered. Part of it will be bagged up and sold and
most of it will be spread into the gardens at St. Luke’s, St. James’
Place and in the Lady Garden. The work will be done by the
YouthWorks students who are renting the Crypt, along with
Master Gardener volunteers. If you are able to loan us a wheel-
barrow or some traffic safety cones, please let us know.
Harvest Power will be donating the compost, but we need to pay
the trucking fees. We would also like to purchase some new
plants, shrubs, planters and a bench for the Chapel Walkway. If
you would like to volunteer in the garden with the Master
Gardeners, please leave a message at the office. Join us for some
fresh air, exercise, good company, and the opportunity to learn
more about gardening. We are also accepting monetary
donations to the gardens.
Check out the new St. Francis statue in the Chapel Walkway
Garden, donated by a St. Luke’s resident. Please tell your friends
and neighbours about the compost sale. We’ll have a lot of bags
to sell!
