~AROUND THE PARISH~

Second Collection this weekend is for Diocesan Missionary Cooperative Appeal. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith accepts requests from Mission Dioceses and Religious

Orders working in the missions to preach at a parish for the purpose of making an appeal for financial support. This annual appeal is one that helps unite the Diocese of Sacramento with the Universal Church and to emanate mission awareness among the people of the Diocese of Sacramento. The generous donations are a reflection of the ongoing awareness and concern for the peoples of the world. Envelopes are in the pews. Thank you for your generosity!

Activity of the week The Church often uses symbols to summarize what we understand about the truths of our faith. Next time you go to church, arrive early and find symbols of the Trinity in your church. What do they tell you about our belief in the Holy Trinity? https://lifelongcatechesis.osv.com/

Musician Volunteer Needed We are looking for another musician (organist, pianist, or guitarist) to help at our 8:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday mornings (changing to 7:30 a.m. on July 4 weekend until Labor Day weekend) and at the Saturday Vigil Masses at 5:00 p.m. Our current

organist is slowing down and needs someone who can eventually take over. Please pray about volunteering for this very important and rewarding ministry.

~SPIRITUAL CORNER~

The Mystery Of The Blessed Trinity Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church sets aside this Sunday to focus our attention on the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, God who is one, but three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy emphasizes both God’s awesome greatness and amazing nearness. It might seem beyond belief, but the God of all creation speaks to us, protects us, and guides us. The second reading from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans describes how we are to relate to the three persons who are one God. We are led by the Spirit to meet God the Father as adopted children. Our adoption is such that we are even heirs with our brother, Christ, the second person of the Trinity, in whose sufferings we must also share. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks with his authority as God and sends us to teach and baptize in the name of the Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Feast Of Faith Liturgy and the Holy Trinity The Trinity is the central mystery of our faith. We believe that God is one, yet three: total unity and rich diversity. God is not a monolith, but a dynamic community of persons, a perfect, loving harmony of three. And the liturgy is the work of the Trinity. We begin all our liturgical celebrations with the sign of the cross, a reminder of our Trinitarian baptism, and the simplest of all professions of our faith. We believe that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we gather in the name of this triune God. Throughout the Mass, we address our prayers to God the Father, through Christ our Lord, in the Spirit’s power. And the Father hears our prayer, transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of his Son by the Holy Spirit. The Church is “the sacrament of trinitarian communion” (Sacramentum Caritatis, 16). It is the Trinity who holds us together as well. In the words of Saint Cyprian, we are “a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (quoted in Sacramentum Caritatis, 16).

FROM OUR PASTOR, FATHER FRANCIS

Last Sunday, we celebrated the sending of the Spirit, which sealed God’s new covenant and made a new creation. In this new creation, we live in the family of God, who has revealed himself as a Trinity of love. We share in His divine nature through His Body and Blood. This is the meaning of the three feasts that cap the Easter season— Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, and Corpus Christi. These feasts should be intimate reminders of how deeply God loves us, how He chose us, from before the foundation of the world, to be His children.

Today’s readings illuminate how all God’s words and works were meant to prepare for the revelation of the Trinity and God’s blessing in Jesus Christ—the blessing we inherited in Baptism, and renew in each Eucharist. By God’s word the heavens and earth were filled with His kindness, we sing in today’s Psalm. Out of love, God called Abraham and chose his descendants to be His own people, Moses says in today’s First Reading. Through the Israelites, He revealed to the nations that He alone is Lord and there is no other. In Jesus, God’s word took flesh as a son of Abraham. And Jesus reveals in the Gospel today that the one God is Father, Son, and Spirit, and that He desires to make all people His own. As He led Israel out of Egypt, God freed us from slavery, Paul says in today’s Epistle. As He adopted Israel, He gives us the Spirit by which we can know Him as “Our Father.” As God’s heirs, we receive the commissions of Moses and Jesus today. We are to fix our hearts on Him, and to observe all that He has commanded. The Eucharist is His pledge—that He will be with us until the end, that He will deliver us from death to live forever in the promised land of His kingdom.
