2012 Revised EPDsfor Simmental and SimAngus
In the spring of 2012, the American Simmental Association Board of Trustees moved to change the "base" of someof our Expected Progeny Differences. A "base" is a chosen number used as a starting reference point for all traits. The NEW base numbers are shown in the chart below. Please note that the Purebred Simmental cattle and the
Percentage Simmental cattle each have their own set of numbers, as has always been the case.
A quick run-down of what you will notice:
CE - Has not changed. Same as previous years.
BW - 2.6 is the Purebred Simmental BW base, 1.2 is the SimAngus BW base in 2013.
WW and YW -Growth numbers have increased dramatically. This change reflects the tremendous growth the Simmental breed naturally exhibits. Our Simmental and SimAngus genetics can and will improve the early growth and post weaning growth in a calf crop.
MCE - Has not changed. Same as previous years.
Milk - Huge increase, taking into account the natural milking ability of the Simmental breed. "3" used to be average, now "22" is average.
MWW and CWT - Again, the reflection of growth in Simmental, these numbers have gone up as well.
MRB (Marbling) - The base number is now 0.07. We still have the same herd we have always had, and we are proud that every bull in our offering with the exception of one (and he's at 0.0), is POSITIVE for this important trait.
REA - Huge increase. You will more than likely see very few bulls if any with negative Ribeye Area EPDs, again due to the natural muscling present in the Simmental breed.
We will help you to find a comfort zone with these new EPD numbers. In addition to talking genetics and bulls this fall,we'll be happy to spend as much time as needed explaining the changes that have taken place.
Please take a moment to compare the average of Moser Ranch bulls in this year's offering to the breed average for all traitsfound in a chart on page 7. Our cattle are above average pretty much all across the board, and we are very proud of that fact.

Meet the Owen Family-Our Guest Consignors and Our FriendsWe have been blessed to get to know Aaron and Jennie and their family as a result of the six years that Aaron and Harry spent together on the Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association. This is the sixth year they have joined us in our sale. Their bulls were delivered to our ranch in May and have been handled and managed right with our bull prospects. The guarantee on their bulls is like ours-they stand behind their cattle 100%. The Owen Brothers Cattle Company (look for the OBCC prefix on their bull lots) has a great cattle program down in
the Ozark area of Missouri, just 15 miles west of Springfield.
To visit with any of the Owen family about their consignments, please contact them at the following: email: [email protected]

Welcome to our Family's 22nd Bull Sale! We appreciate you taking the time to look over our 2013 sale offering. Our focus, as it has always been, is to improve your bot-tom line with genetics that will efficiently produce a product that is of high quality and in demand to meet what our industry-and most importantly what the consumer-wants. As in the past, our catalog is in sale order. To do it that way is not an easy task. We wait until ultrasound and gain information is gathered and disseminated before we sort the bulls for sale order. Blending numbers, phenotype, ET sets of brothers and different breeds of cattle provides a long afternoon's challenge to layout the catalog! But, it keeps the conversation lively when we're wondering perhaps why we can't get the 88th bull farther up the sale order because he is such a good one?! That being said, the depth of our qual-ity this years run right through to the 107th bull in the catalog. High quality, good numbered bulls can be found from top to bottom of our sale order. The offering includes bulls for calving ease, growth, carcass traits-there are bulls to meet everyone's needs. As many of you know, our sale is very consistent-no huge swings of prices, just good, honest cattle selling to good, honest cattlemen and women. If you'd like to discuss the bulls, please feel free to give us a call, email or text about them, or better yet, come to the ranch before sale day to look them over and visit with us one on one. We will do our best to assist you during your herd bull search and then we'll be there to serve you after the purchase, you can count on it. Being seedstock and commercial producers, we know how important it is for a female to produce a big calf and breed back, and be sound in her phenotype and disposition. Commercial producers don't have time for trouble of any kind. Our intention on the Moser Ranch is to raise cattle that will work for you, not the other way around. Along that line, we develop our bulls much differently than most breeders. All the bulls spend the spring months on fescue, then are moved to Flinthills native range for June and July. In early August, the 130+ fall bulls that start the test are run in an 80 acre pasture-they walk an average of a mile a day to feed and water. The 30+ spring bulls run in a 40 acre pasture. You won't see 1400# yearling weights or over-fat bulls. What you will find are bulls that are ready to go to work and hopefully stay in your herd for many useful years. It's a great time to be in the cattle business. Record prices are being paid for healthy, heavy calves. We can help you get more out of every calf you produce. Thank you for considering Moser Ranch genetics. See you on November 9th-

ALL BULLS HAVE BEEN TESTED NEGATIVE
FOR BVD PI and TRICHOMONIASIS
SEMEN TESTING All bulls were semen tested on October 29, 2013, in the event that you want to put them out with cows immediately. For bulls not working until Spring 2014, a re-check is recommended at that time.
RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST The Moser Ranch is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all polled bulls in the offering. You will own full possession and salvage value of the animal. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, the Moser Ranch is basically retaining the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue. If you sell the bull to another cattleman, the 1/3 semen interest is still retained by the Moser Ranch. We reserve the right to collect bulls of interest to us at buyer's convenience and seller's expense.
EMBRYO TRANSFER Cross Country Genetics North, Westmoreland, KS, has been our ET company since we started doing embryo transfer in 1991. Drs. Kirk Gray and Clay Breiner and their staff have done a great job for us the past 22 years, and we appreciate their efforts.
Buyer InformationBULL MANAGEMENT Fall bulls were fenceline weaned on fescue on April 6, 2013 and remained on grass. Spring bulls were weaned in large lots in September 26, 2012, then wintered on a growing ration. ALL BULLS spent the spring and the first part of the summer of 2013 on fescue, and were moved to a section of native grass on June 18. They were brought in the evening of August 5th to get acclimated for the gain test. Here at home, fall bulls have been running in an 80 acre pasture, and spring bulls in a 30 acre pasture. Target gain was 3.25#/day. Results are listed in the catalog. The ration consists of corn silage, ground grass hay, wet distillers, cracked corn and a base mineral & vitamin premix. WE FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT "RANGE DEVELOPING" OUR BULLS AND NOT PUSHING THEM HARD ON TEST allows them to express their genetics on a more realistic level, stay more structurally sound, and they are presented to you at sale time in "breeding appropriate" condition scores. Please remember that these bulls are still growing, and will continue to do so for at least the next year to year and a half. Until breeding season, they need to stay on a similar plain of nutrition, 5-7# of grain in addition to silage or hay.
CATALOG EPD INFORMATION ON THE INSIDE FRONT COVER YOU CAN FIND THE 2012 REVISED EPD EXPLANATION FOR SIMMENTAL AND SIMANGUS CATTLE. Fall 2013 breed average EPDs for active Simmental, SimAngus and Angus sires can be found on page 7. You can directly compare the Moser Bulls of each breed to the current active sires for each respective breed on page 7.
ULTRASOUND Craig Hays from Critical Insights collected ultrasound images on spring bulls on May 21, 2013. Bonnie Larson collected ultrasound images on our fall bulls on October 9, 2013. The Hays & Larson families own Criti-cal Insights Inc., an ultrasounding service in Maryville, MO. We have been providing ultrasound information in one form or another to our customers since 1996. The following thoughts about ultrasound are important to remember: 1. The American Simmental Association utilizes the ultrasound information in the calculation of the carcass EPDs that they generate. So, the data itself is already figured into the carcass EPDs. We feel that using the carcass EPDs is a more accurate way to make your selection than by using the adjusted raw ultrasound data. To help with this transition, we have developed a "Plus System" and also supplied you with the in-herd ratio for each measured trait. The system reads as such in the catalog: +++ means a bull scanned in the upper 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB)
++ means a bull scanned in the middle 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB) + means a bull scanned in the lower 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB) (*the upper, middle or lower 1/3 of each bull's contemporary group)If you want the raw data on a particular bull, let us know and we can supply it. 2. Fat thickness amounts vary greatly depending on feeding. Our bulls are set up to gain 3.25#/day on test. THEY ARE NOT FAT.
RULE OF THUMB CONCERNING BULL USE Put a yearling bull with no more than 20-25 cows, and pull him away from the cowherd after a 45 to 80 day breeding season. The older spring born bulls can handle up to 30-35 cows, but please pull them away from the breeding herd after a 45-80 season as well. Young bulls need time to regain condition lost during breeding, and to help them continue to grow and develop properly and rebuild fertility. Fall worming and a complete vaccination schedule is recommended.
5% REPEAT BUYER DISCOUNTIn an effort to reward loyal bull customers, we are pleased to continue our "Repeat Buyer Discount" policy this year.
This is how it works: If you purchased a bull (or bulls) in our November 10, 2012 sale, you will receive 5% off your total bull pur-chase in this November 9, 2013 sale. This is a continuous credit policy, which is in effect each year. This 5% discount is determined after all credits have been subtracted from the gross purchase price. FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO USE EXCLUSIVELY MOSER GE-NETICS FOR THEIR BREEDING STOCK BUT MAY NOT PURCHASE BULLS EVERY YEAR, you can plan on being able to use this repeat discount as well. PLEASE LET THE GIRLS KNOW AT SETTLEMENT IF YOU PURCHASE AND USE MOSER GENETICS EXCLUSIVELY IN
YOUR HERD. This is our way of saying "Thank You" to all our bull buyers.-our thanks to Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland, KS, for allowing us to use their basic idea of the 5% repeat customer discount and adapt it to our program. (2006)
A Rock Solid Program...the Moser Ranch7
Guide to American Simmental Association's EPDs and $ INDEXESExpected Progeny Differences (EPDs) EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires' EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny.
Please see inside cover for explanation of2012 REVISED EPDS for SIMMENTAL and SIMANGUS BREEDS
$ INDEXES (DOLLAR INDEXES) Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal's overall impact on your bottom line and are expressed in dollars/cow exposed.

All-Purpose Index (API) Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers & mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield.
Terminal Index (TI) Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade & yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you're keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls.

Homozygous Black...Homozygous Polled ~ Exactly what do those terms mean??
Lot 55 - 2701Z Lot 88 - 2753Z
In our college genetics books, homozygous is defined as having identical alleles at corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes so that the organism breeds true with respect to these loci. (the definition hasn't changed in 30+ years!)
Homozygous Black: In simpler terms, a homozygous black bull gives a black gene to his offspring every time. He "breeds true" for color. Black, which is dominant to the red color in cattle, will be the color of every animal sired by a homozygous black bull. IF you have cows that carry the dilution gene, (yellow and gray females carry the dilution gene, as do some lighter red cows) they may give that dilution gene to their offspring, which "dilutes" the black color to gray.
The homozygous black bull has nothing to do with the resulting gray individual.
Homozygous Polled: Again, a homozygous polled bull will "breed true" and give a polled gene to each of his offspring. The polled gene is dominant to the horned gene, so all offspring from a homozygous polled bull will be polled.

Harry & Lisa,
Just wanted to let you know that the 0108 Olie son that I purchased from you all is very exceptional. I would really love for you to see him, he is as massive of a bull as I’ve ever seen...with lots of guts, moderate frame, and good length of body. I used him on some of the 6319S daughters and the calves are phenomenal. His calves are very attractive...and are born small and have grown very well ...his spread from birth to weaning is going to be impressive. Just thought you might want some good news from the east.
Hope all is well...Zach Teter, WV

Sylvester A. Skoch ~ Godfather, Uncle, Friend
Like a second father to me, my Godfather, Sylvester Skoch, died on Wednes-day afternoon, November 14, 2012. His youngest sister had just been visiting and they had shared a good-bye, and in the time it took me to stop at the nurse’s station at the care home to inquire about his vital signs before heading in to see him, he passed quietly, alone in his room. When I went in, his blue eyes were open, but I knew he was gone. He never wanted to cause anyone a fuss, and so his death was exactly as it should have been. This man is the primary reason I love the military and have such great respect for the job they do, and why we honor them at our sale every year. Sylvester was my Dad’s oldest brother, and at two weeks of age, I was one lucky little girl when my folks chose him to be my Godfather. His dad, Venzle Skoch, had told him to see the world, and so he did, in the Army uniform of an American soldier. A medic in WWII, he saw more blood and gore than most of us will see in a lifetime, and yet he returned to the States after 4 years in the European and African theaters to teach 6th grade for 30 years. He touched more lives during his teaching profession than we could ever begin to count. A box full of “V-Mail” letters (as this was long before email and Skype) tell gener-ic stories of the war (he couldn’t get specific about war details or those lines would be blacked out by censors. That way if the letter accidentally fell into enemy hands there would be no information in it they could use against the Allies) and asking how things were back home on the family farm in northeast Kansas. Besides writing home in his spare time overseas, he taught other soldiers to read and write, danced with Princess Elizabeth (now the Queen of England), rubbed elbows with General Mark Clark, and came up with the word “Antidisestablishmentarianism.”
Betty Bonjour April 29, 1952 - July 22, 2013 Lifelong friend, bull customer, amazing animal steward...Betty was all these things to our family. She endured a 17-year battle with cancer, which she found out about two days after our 1996 bull sale. Betty used to joke that the cancer and her were having a “Mexican Standoff”, and that she was going to give it all she had to beat it. She gave it every ounce of her being, all the while running her ranch and tending her cattle with the utmost care. At left, Betty is pictured visiting with Gary Zimmerman at our 1999 sale. Immediately be-low that is a picture of her and Kendra at that same sale; Kendra had just turned 9 years old! Betty and Kendra shared a special bond throughout the years, going on trail rides together, and near the end, Kendra went with Betty and daughter Jessi on several trips to the doctor. Our kids purchased several 4-H steers from Betty over the years. She’s pictured below with Cameron and his Reserve Grand Champion steer back in 1995, which came out of her herd. The final photo is of Betty and her baldie cows-she loved them! Betty purchased 34 Moser bulls over the years; she was a cus-tomer ever since our first bull sale back in 1993. The Double B Ranch legacy continues on under the watchful eye of daughter, Jessi Figge. Rest in peace, Betty.Heaven has welcomed the consummate cowgirl.
The wisdom he gleaned from growing up as the oldest child in a family of seven kids during the Great Depression, his war experiences, teaching, and visiting all 50 states and every continent except Australia kept me interested all of the 52 years he was with me in life. As a Godfather, his life lessons for me went beyond measure. His intelligence was legendary. He taught me by example, and near his life’s end, he strengthened me emotionally and spiritually more than I could have ever imagined. He signed birthday cards and letters to me, “Your Godpop-Simply, S2.” A simple, frugal man, he was an amaz-ing role model for me and my family. We were blessed indeed to have him in our lives. Rest in peace, Godpop.

We were approached by Purina during the summer of 2103 to run a weaning trial on our spring born bull calves using their Precon 5 product. Thanks to those of you
who could make it to our evening presentation on October 2, to
see the weaned bull calves and preview our sale offering. Purina discussed our very favorable re-
sults over supper. We will have the data available on sale day if you weren't able to make the meet-ing and would like to review the
information.

Heifers for the North Country October 4, 2013, was a day that will be remembered by stockmen in North and South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming for the rest of their lives, and the stories about that blizzard and the losses those folks endured will be retold generation after generation. The Moser Ranch is looking into ways we can help out our fellow producers who suffered terrible losses in the upper midwest. Harry was born and raised in southwest North Dakota, so the area that was severly hit is pretty close to home. Luckily the Moser family and our cattle friends up there were spared the brunt of the storm's wrath, but not too many miles south, the losses were unimaginable. A couple members of the Moser family were hunting in the Black Hills the weekend of the storm and other friends were visiting family in the Hills, and during their trips home, they simply could not believe the devastation. Dead cattle and sheep were everywhere-piled up in fencelines, under trees and in the ditches. We are sure all of you have read stories and seen the photos. We are working through the Kansas Livestock Association and northern state associations to see about the possible donation of animals, or other avenues of aid. Particulars of the situation have not been finalized, and we will work to get donations arranged so that they are tax-deductible for those who give. If we do the live animal donation, we would like for you, the giver, to get to know the family who receives your stock. We can make sure that happens, by finding out exactly who the cattle will go to, and you can take it from there. We are certain the people who will be receiving our Kansas cattle will be more appreciative than we can ever imagine. At present we do have customers who are willing to donate replacement quality open heifers. If we end up with a trailer load, we'll take them up personally and meet the folks who will get them. If we end up with a semi-load, we'll do the same thing. Any of you who donate would be welcome to make the trip with us. This is one of those times where the "rugged individualism" of the American farmer and rancher shines through, and we feel we need to step up and help out. It's just the right thing to do. If you would be willing to donate a heifer (or want to give in another way), please give us a call so we can keep the ball rolling. This may take a few months to get organized, but it will be worth every minute the entire project takes when those folks north of here receive our gifts. All who donate will be recognized in a spe-cial way at our 2014 sale. If you'd like to learn more about the situation itself, you can use the following links: On Facebook, search for Heifers for S. Dakota or Ranchers Relief Fund. Online you can go to these 3 websites: kla.org http://thesouthdakotacowgirl.com/2013/10/how-can-you-help/ http://helpforsouthdakota.com/ We'll check into the Nebraska situation as well to see if donating closer to our Kansas homes is needed. Thanks in advance for your prayerful consideration of this venture. -Lisa and Harry Moser and Family
