Then Isaiah says God’s ways are as high above our ways “as the heavens are above the earth” (Isaiah 55:9). So we search, not because God is hiding, but because our tendencies are so different from God’s ways that we get lost. How are God’s ways so high above our ways? The example Isaiah gives is that God’s way is to be “generous in forgiving” (Isaiah 55:7). And our way? We try to be “fair.” You hurt me, so then I hurt you back, just as hard. Then, of course, you . . . . And on it goes. In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches that God is not “fair” like that. Instead, God is so generous we can hardly understand it. The same wage for one hour as for a whole day of work? Not fair! “Seek the Lord,” and we might find a God who calls us to be, not fair, but generous beyond expectations. . . Today’s Readings SEEK THE LORD

In today’s opening reading, Isaiah

urges us to “seek the LORD” who is “near” and can be “found” (Isaiah 55:6).

MT 21: 28-32

Monsoon season is still here and it is

worthy to mention that all of us must heed the warnings of “Turn around and not drown.” Be careful out there when flash floods occur.

The sidewalk is now completed and we will

be doing “Phase 2” of the sidewalk contract for staff parking which broke ground on Monday the 15th of September. Please be advised that the funds for these projects were in a restricted fund and not from the regular income from parish donations. We’re also hoping to paint all the buildings on campus either by the end of this year or early in 2015. Thank you all who have helped to develop these projects and underwrite the costs. Anyone wishing to help underwrite the painting project please be sure to contact Fr. Ray or Deacon Jacob. Questions for Sunday September 28, 2014: What kind of death is Ezekiel speaking of in context of his chastising Israel? EZ 18: 25-28 What did John the Baptist teach to those that came to hear him that Jesus is speaking of in context to the Elders and chief priests in this scene from St. Matthew’s Gospel? MT 21: 28-32

“Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me…”

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

September 24th – November 2nd

40 Days For Life is an International Prayer Ministry that began in 2007 in College Station, Texas dedicated to eradicating, through prayer and fasting, centers of abortion in our communities. Since 2007, 539 cities across the United States and Canada as well as 24 countries have participated in a 40 Days Campaign praying at centers of abortion in their respective cities. Since 2007, nearly 2000 campaigns have been conducted, with over half a million participants resulting in the permanent closure of 55 centers for abortion (one here in Las Vegas). Nearly 9000 children have been saved, many of those here in Las Vegas. During 40 Days for Life, the community is asked to pray and advocate for the unborn in these three specific ways: 1. Prayer and Fasting 2. Vigil: Parishioners are asked to join

together to vigil at the site of the abortion clinic. We will be outside after Mass on Sept 28th, to collect names of those individuals wanting to participate at the clinic on Saturday, October. 4th, from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. The clinic, The Birth Control Center, is located at 872 East Sahara Avenue (behind Tower of Jewels) in Las Vegas. Join Us!

3. Community Outreach: Perhaps you know an unwed mother whom you can journey beside, or you can contact Living Grace Homes, an organization that offers a beautiful residential facility in Las Vegas for soon-to-be mothers between the ages of 14-22. They provide safe haven to those who are pregnant and unwed and without support. Send donations to: Living Grace Homes, P. O. Box 60416, LV, NV 89160 or call: (702) 212-6472.

Small Church Communities; a way of being

church

Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!

Please call Chris at (702) 378-5622 or e-mail at [email protected]

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY . . . YARN NEEDED We have a new ministry of caring for those in need of comfort, peace and spiritual solace especially in times of illness and death through the creation and presentation of the PRAYER SHAWL.

What is needed is time and a willingness to create these beautiful shawls through the art of crocheting and/or knitting. We could also use your leftover yarn. Do you have scraps or skeins of yarn that you no longer need? Maybe you know someone that no longer knits or crochets. We could really use that yarn for our Prayer Shawl Ministry. For anyone who might be interested in participating in this wonderful act of love, or if you have any yarn you wish to donate, please call Maureen Morley at (702) 364-8411 for further information. Come and join this most important corporal and spiritual work!

With the start of the new school year and everything gearing up again we wanted to make you aware of a few things “Liturgically” speaking for us here at CTK: NEW READERS and NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING:

Anyone interested in being a Eucharistic Minister, we have training coming up. You can attend either on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00 until 11:00 am in the church OR on Wednesday, September 24th from 6:30 until 8:30 pm, also in the church. Please call Mary or Cathy in the office to register (702) 871-1904.

For those wishing to be a Reader, there is a mandatory 3 day training to be held on Wednesday – September 17, September 24th and October 1st from 7:00 until 9:00 pm in the church. Please call Mary or Cathy in the office to register (702) 871-1904.

If anyone is interested in volunteering for ANY other ministry (Musician – Singer or Instrumentalist, Sound & Lighting Person at Mass, Hospitality, Bread Baker, Mass & Table Coordinator, Martha & Mary Guild, Liturgical Dance, Welcome Center desk) please contact either Mary or Cathy in the office (702) 871-1904 for further information. Daily Chapel

Seeking to answer the current spiritual needs of our parish community, we will be putting a fresh face on the Daily Chapel situated to the left of the Gathering Space as you walk into church in response to the many parishioners who have asked for a more private and quiet place of prayer before mass.

In order to accommodate this need and at the same time holding true to the “founding spirit” of Christ the King in our hospitality and welcoming atmosphere of greeting/visiting with one another before mass in the main church, we have decided to use the Daily Chapel for this purpose as the current Eucharistic chapel on the west side of the church building is just not large enough.

The week of September 22nd, we will be taking the tapestry of “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” Patroness of all the Americas, from the Gathering Space and placing it in the Daily Chapel along with two other matching tapestries that depict “San Lorenzo Ruiz,” the first canonized Filipino saint and the image of Christ under the title of “The Divine Mercy.” The three tapestries will be placed on the north wall of the Chapel along with two small banks of candles that can be lit (electronically) for your prayer intentions. Real candles will not be used due to cost and safety factors.

Two kneelers will also be placed in front of the tapestries to complete that portion of the chapel space. These works of art are being made for us by the artist John Nava who designed our original tapestry of Our Lady of Guadalupe and who also designed the tapestries that are in the Cathedral in Los Angeles. They have been paid for by the generous donations of you, our community, through the various fund raising events over the past several months and the dedicated hard work of many of our parishioners. To you and all who have worked so lovingly, we thank you greatly!

Just a note … the Daily Chapel will still be set up and available to be used for smaller services as in the past and for our November “Chapel of Remembrance” of the dead.

Collection at CTK The weekend of September 20-21, 2014 we will begin offering an additional option for those who might find it difficult

to leave your seat for the collection during mass or for those who might not want to come up to the altar platform at that time. The collection will take place as usual with the Presider inviting everyone forward with their offerings of parish support and food for the hungry poor. The candles will be moved from the ambo and placed by the altar platform as we normally do as well. When the Presider or Deacon goes to the altar to prepare the gifts, our hospitality ministry will come to each section of the church and pass a basket for your offerings.

Please keep in mind this passing of the basket does NOT replace that of coming forward with your money and food. It is an OPTION.

Lay Presiders Several Lay Presiders have been trained to step in and lead the community in prayer at a Liturgy of the Word

Service with Communion in the event that a Priest does not come for a Mass. The Lay Presiders will be called upon if there is no Priest and if one of the Deacons cannot be reached.

Please note that these Lay Presiders have been trained according to the official documents of the church. The services very much resemble that of our Sunday mass with the exception of the consecration and some of the other parts of the Eucharistic liturgy. For example, in these services the “Gloria” is omitted.

If you are present when a Lay Presider does lead the prayer, know that they are doing so under the complete authority and direction of the Pastor and Director of Liturgy. The service is a VALID observance of the obligation to attend mass.

Again, we thank these wonderful people for agreeing to respond in such an emergency.
