First Reading — For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the L , our God, is to us? (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). Psalm — The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading — Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). Gospel — This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23).

THE HIGHEST LAW

From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of “filler,” various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others’ attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all.

De vez en cuando, los periódicos y las revistas publican, a modo de “relleno”, diversas leyes que siguen en los libros pero que parecen ridículas en nuestra época. En una ciudad de California, es ilegal tener dos bañeras dentro de una casa. Cuando se pasó la ley era un lujo tener acceso al agua corriente, pero ahora que no lo es la ley parece ridícula. Sin embargo, el valor humano de proteger y preservar los recursos más valiosos sigue teniendo vigencia, esto se manifiesta en muchas leyes, que nos parecen muy acertadas, cuyo fin es proteger el medio ambiente. Sucede lo mismo con los preceptos religiosos. Lo que Jesús desdeña hoy es la actitud de los demás respecto a los preceptos rituales, una actitud que se vuelve casi idólatra cuando se obedecen los preceptos por el mero hecho de obedecerlos. Lo que Jesús enseña es que el cumplimiento de los preceptos rituales externos sólo tiene valor cuando simboliza nuestra predisposición interior a cumplir la voluntad de Dios. Nuestras vidas deben obedecer el precepto supremo de Dios: amar a Dios por encima de todo y al prójimo igual que nos amamos a nosotros. La religión católica es rica en costumbres, tradiciones e incluso preceptos. Al seguir escuchando la voz de Cristo, siempre debemos examinar nuestro corazón y nuestras prácticas rituales para asegurarnos de que el amor a Dios y al prójimo se halle por encima de todo lo demás. En la segunda lectura de hoy escuchamos “acepten dócilmente la palabra y no se limiten a escucharla.” (Santiago 1: 17-18, 21b-22,27)

En un clima en el que parece que el mal comportamiento es aceptable y el buen comportamiento se tira por la ventana. Nosotros, como creyentes en Jesucristo debemos preguntarnos ¿En dónde estamos parados en todo esto? Honramos a Dios en lo que hacemos y lo que decimos? ¿Estamos viviendo nuestra fe honestamente, o solamente es santa exteriormente e internamente es como la de los fariseos que exigían que todos cumplieran a la ley, pero ellos no la practicanban?

Dios ve todas las cosas, conoce todas las cosas, y oye todas las cosas. A veces podemos engañar a algunas personas, pero Dios tiene contados los cabellos de nuestra cabeza y conoce cada pensamiento de nuestra mente. (Lucas 12: 7 y Salmo 139) Así que la pregunta es ¿Cuál es tu postura en todo lo que está pasando en el mundo? Cuando nuestras creencias religiosas están siendo escudriñadas por el mundo, cuando nuestros corazones se endurecen y nos cegamos por los efectos de este mundo de pecado ¿Cuál es nuestra postura? Como creyentes siempre debemos estar del lado de la fe.

Como Directora de Liturgia, sería muy fácil ser cínica y desconectada. Podría decir, no me importa, o no quiero escuchar otra queja o ver otra pelea entre feligrés, pero no es así. Por el contrario, estos eventos sólo me llevan a confirmar aún más mi creencia de que el trabajo que hacemos es aún más importante de lo que creemos. Estamos lejos de terminar Nuestro trabajo como creyentes. La gente necesita tener un lugar a donde ir a curar nuestras heridas. Nosotros, como cristianos debemos entender que todos estamos afectados por el pecado original. El pecado original es como un defecto. Es parte de nuestra hechura y hay que estar constantemente conscientes de sus efectos en nuestra vida. En nuestro Evangelio escuchamos, “Lo que mancha al hombre es lo que sale de dentro; porque del corazón, del hombre salen las intenciones malas, las fornicaciones, los robos, los homicidios, los adulterios, las codicias, las injusticias, los fraudes, el orgullo y la frivolidad. “ (Marcos 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23) Ninguno de nosotros está excluido de sus efectos, todos estamos sujetos al pecado.

Todos los Domingos, como el Cuerpo de Cristo, todos estamos llamados a venir a la iglesia para la Sagrada Comunión, la comunión con Dios, y la comunión de unos con otros. De Domingo a Domingo vivimos fuera de esta iglesia y nos enfrentamos con el mundo exterior. La Iglesia es donde deberíamos poder decir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas “esta semana he tenido muchas bendiciones” o “esta semana he sido sacudido por este mundo.” Cuando entramos por las puertas de Christ The King, debemos poder poner nuestros problemas en el altar de Dios y dar gracias a Dios por las muchas bendiciones que hemos recibido. Debemos salir de nuestra iglesia alimentados por la palabra de Dios, el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo, y de los demás. No hay que dejar la iglesia sintiéndonos peor que cuando entramos. Debemos entender que no somos enemigos unos de otros. El enemigo es el diablo y todas sus obras. Debido al pecado original, podemos ser un instrumento para el bien o para el mal. Esta semana reflexionemos sobre Santiago 1: 17-27 en nuestras biblias y veamos sinceramente a nuestro interior y traigamos al cuerpo de Cristo lo mejor de los que Dios nos haya creado para ser.

In today’s second reading we hear “be doers of the word and not only hearers.” (James 1:17-18, 21b-22,27 (NIV)

In a climate where it seems that bad behavior is acceptable and social graces are now thrown out the window, we as believers in Jesus Christ have to ask ourselves where do we stand in all of this? Do we honor God in what we do and what we say? Are we living our faith or just outwardly holy but internally like the Pharisees who held everyone up to the law but did not actually practice the law in themselves?

God sees all things, knows all things, and hears all things. We can fool some of the people some of the time but God knows every hair on our head and every thought in our mind. (Luke 12:7 and Psalm 139 (NAB) So the question is where do you stand in all that is going on in the world? When our religious faith is being scrutinized by the world, when our hearts become hardened and blinded by the effects of this sinful world where do we stand? As believers we must stand on the side of faith.

As Director of Liturgy, it could be so easy to become cynical and disconnected. I could say, I don’t care or I don’t want to listen to another complaint or watch another parishioner fight with each other but I don’t. Instead these events only push me further in my belief that the work we do is even more important. Our work as believers is far from over and people need to have a place to go in order to heal our brokenness. We as Christians must understand that we are all affected by original sin. Original sin is like a defect. It is part of our make-up and we must constantly be aware of its effects in our life. In our Gospel we hear, “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.” (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23, L125B) None of us are excluded from its affects, we are all subject to sin.

Every Sunday, as one Body of Christ, we are all called to come to church for Holy Communion, communion with God, and communion with one another. From Sunday to Sunday we live outside of this church and have to face the outside world. Church is where we should be able to come and say to our brothers and sister, “this week I’ve had many blessings” or “this week I’ve been tossed about by this world.” When we enter the doors of Christ the King we should be able to lay our troubles at the altar of God and thank God for the many blessings we’ve been given. We should be able to leave our church fed by the word of God, the body and blood of Christ, and one another. We shouldn’t leave church feeling worse than we came in. We must understand that we are not each other’s enemies. The enemy is the devil and all his works. Due to original sin, we can be an instrument for good and evil. This week let us reflect on James 1:17-27 in our bibles and look honestly at ourselves and bring to the body of Christ the best of whom God created us to be. Blessings always Ellen

Starting Wednesday, September 26th from 5-6pm in the Church (and every Wednesday night thereafter) the Dance ministry of CTK will be having a dance training meeting for all ages who are interested in worshipping the Lord with dance. If you think you would like to become Catholic, or if you would just like to learn about Catholicism, we offer weekly opportunities to learn about the Catholic faith. These informal gatherings for coffee and conversation are held 7:00 pm each Tuesday (except major holidays) in Room 5 of the Activity Center. If, due to your schedule, you can’t join us at our regular Tuesday night sessions, please call the parish office at (702) 871-1904 and leave your name and phone number. Religious Education Grades 1-5 First Communion

Baptism of older children How do I enroll my child?

Elementary Registration for 2017/18 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office

M-TH 8-4:00 pm - Closed from 12-1:00 pm A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for

each child being registered.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Family must be registered at Christ the King

• Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy

• Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering

When are classes held?

Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 6:00 pm SACRAMENTS

(1st Communion, Baptism)

REQUIREMENTS:

• Same as for Religious Education Registration plus: • Child is in second grade or above • Child is enrolled in and attending weekly age-level

Religious Education first Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation process that requires the participation of the child and a parent or guardian in monthly sessions. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory.

Collection containers are in the Gathering Space of the Church and in the North and South entrances of our Activity Center.

You can also drop them off Monday - Thursday from 9:00 until 4:00 in the Parish Office.
