Today’s Readings

AMEN

Take a look around the walls of your church. Even if it’s only a year or two old, the word “Amen” has resounded off those walls countless times at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer and as the faithful have come forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Today’s feast is about those “Amens” offered in faith, offered in times of trouble or doubt, spoken in joy, spoken mindlessly, but all given to God in a multitude of ways. It is our very lives that lie behind our “Amens” and are touched by the presence of Christ, the presence we celebrate today. More importantly, we celebrate the love of Christ for us shown in the sacrifice on Calvary and that he continues to give to us in every celebration of the Eucharist. What can we do but rejoice in that great love, and then go out into the world and live that love in sacrificing for others?

If you wish to donate money for flowers in memory or in celebration of loved ones. DONATIONS MUST BE FOR WEEKEND LITURGIES.

The sidewalk project has not commenced, as we simply do not have the funding right now to complete the project. We have received numerous checks, but we’re still considerably short in finances at this time. Anyone wishing to help underwrite the cost of the sidewalk project may contact Fr. Ray or Deacon Jacob We all need to be attentive to our vehicles on the CTK campus, as we are having some issues with car break-ins during our weekend services. If your vehicle is broken into, please make every effort to call 311 and make a report immediately so that “Metro” can make a record of the event and supply more patrol on our block. The Diocese is not responsible for break-ins, therefore we need to make every effort to not leave anything valuable inside our vehicles that would call attention to a potential burglary. As a further note, please do not park on Torrey Pines Road on either side of the street, as “Metro” is routinely ticketing vehicles in violation of obstructing the bicycle lanes. A typical ticket for this violation is $191.00 plus any administrative fees the city so chooses to add to that violation. QUESTIONS FOR SUNDAY JUNE 29 READINGS: “I was rescued from the lion’s mouth” what is St. Paul referring to in terms of the lion’s mouth? “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” MT 16-13-19 From your own personal reflection, what does this question of whom the Son of Man is to you?

A Word from Fr. Ray

Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday

we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen’s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit’s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both “on the table” and “at the table.” The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Small Church Communities; a way of being church

Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!

—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. The poet Anne Sexton once wrote that words

may be both daisies and bruises. We live in a time when words seem to wound and divide people more than heal and unite them. Whether in the realm of politics or religion, words have become weapons more often than bridges to understanding and cooperation. But we are a people who over the centuries have been formed by the word of God in both the Old and New Testament.

Both Moses and Jesus knew the power of words that have taken root in the human heart and carry over into action. In the book of Deuteronomy Moses gives his final speech to the people he has led out of bondage and brought to the border of the Promised Land. He calls them not only to wear these words on their body as emblems of faith, but to “take these words of mine into your heart and soul” (Deuteronomy 11:18).

Jesus begins by saying that words alone are not enough; what matters in the end is doing the will of the Father. And what is the Father’s will? Go back and read the entire Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1—7:29). The call to live in a way that brings the law of Moses to fulfillment is to be heard, taken to heart, and carried into action. The instruction given to the disciples remains an urgent command to bring about the kingdom of heaven now. Jesus’ words will be a sturdy shelter that protects them when battering storms threaten to overwhelm. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
