It is also called “Misa de Gallo” (mass when the cock crows) or “Misa de Aguinaldo”. This is a very much desired Filipino religious tradition. Back home, families wake up early, attend mass and fill up many churches. After the liturgy, delicious Filipino food and delicacies are served and shared by families. Thus this becomes both a religious and social gathering. ACTIVITIES: In the Las Vegas valley, “Simbang Gabi” is celebrated in ten different parishes at their regular mass time. The schedule is published in parish bulletins and all parishioners, especially Filipino Catholics, are invited to attend, participate & complete the novena. It is recommended that the Pastor/Associate at the assigned parish presides the liturgy. Other priests are welcome to concelebrate. The readings of the day are read and proclaimed. A simple reception/fellowship takes place after mass. SCHEDULE of Mass/Novena: Dates, Time and Places: 1. Sunday. MASS INTENTIONS

LK 1: 26-38

Please be advised that the 2014 CSA pledge ends on December 31st. Please be sure to get your pledges in by this time, as any pledges received after that date will be applied to the 2015 pledge year for CSA. We are currently $8,000.00 short for the pledges of the 2014 CSA. Unfortunately the parish will have to make up the difference from our already exhausted operating account. We presently owe the Diocese $300,000.00 with interest, and adding this shorted funding from CSA will make a huge burden on our already negative cash flow

There are countless people to give thanks to for the Annual Auction. So many people worked for endless hours to make this year’s auction a success. I especially give great thanks to the “New Team” that put this year’s auction together, and many of our supporters really enjoyed the introduction of the new “Chinese Auction” as well. We had a huge turn out this year, and even with all the little mishaps, everyone enjoyed themselves. I’d like to thank our parishioners for all of their contributions to the auction and being so generous with purchasing raffle tickets. All of your support from volunteers to bidders made this year’s auction a roaring success. We hope that next year’s auction will even be bigger and better. Please give us your suggestions for next year, so that we can improve on what we have begun with our new team. After all is said and done, we made about $20,000.00 from the proceeds of this year’s auction. PRAISE GOD!!!!

Questions for Sunday December 21, 2014:

Mary was told that her son would be named Jesus. What name in the Old Testament is Jesus’s name connected to?

What is the meaning of the translated name from the Old Testament? LK 1:26-38

A Word from Fr. Ray

With much love and gratitude, Fr. Ray Con mucho amor y gratitud, P. Ray

Small Church Communities; a way of being church

Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!

LITURGY CORNER ADVENT – Week 3

Jesse Tree Symbols As we continue to share the story of our faith history, this week we trace the lineage of Christ through the “Jesse Tree” and the “Jesse Tree” symbols using the following: Heart – Ruth Ruth 1: 1-22 Wheel – The Prophet Ezekiel Ezekiel 1: 1-28 Lion – The Prophet Daniel Daniel 6: 2-29 Shell – John the Baptist Mark 1: 2-8 / Mt. 3: 1-12 We encourage you to read one or more of these scriptures during this coming week to get a better understanding not only of the history of our Jewish ancestors but to understand the longing each of these biblical figures had in their own faith lives. Each in their own way sought to live in Godly ways, always longing for the deliverance of Israel and the birth of the promised Messiah.

Happy Advent!

The tradition of anointing the sick with blessed

oil is very old, but developed slowly and unevenly in the first eight centuries of the church’s life. St. Augustine, who wrote volumes of homilies from his thriving church in North Africa, plus pastoral directives, letters, and memoirs, never mentions it at all. We know from ancient prayers that it did happen in Rome, Milan, Gaul, and the British Isles. In Rome the bishop blessed the oil of the sick, but it could be applied by a priest, deacon, or a layperson. It seems that sick persons could even anoint themselves. St. Genevieve of Paris was known for anointing the sick in her care.

Perhaps inevitably, complaints of abuses, and even trickery by sorcerers, brought an end to this consoling practice. In a dangerous world with a dispersed population, clerics may have preferred that this hands-on care was a lay privilege. The purpose of anointing, however, was not simply healing, but forgiveness of sin and an experience of saving power of Christ. By the year 800, dioceses everywhere were organizing rituals for priestly anointing. Although anointing of the sick is reserved to priests today, perhaps this treasured memory will enrich the future of the sacrament. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Traditions

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Small Church Communities;

a way of being Church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives.
