Tyler Utt, 1 st grade, scored in the top forty-five students from all participating first graders, and Hamil Hira, 3 rd grade, scored in the top thirty-five of all third grade students participating. Mathfest is an event aimed at improving math achievement by getting students excited about math and is open to elementary and middle school students. Tyler and Hamil will now travel to a regional competition in Atlanta, GA, where the top one hundred students from each grade level in North Carolina will compete with other winners from Arkansas, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. Congratulations to Tyler and Hamil and best wishes as they continue in their competition! March 2011 MCA Wins Again at the Northwest Regional Science Fair! The Northwest Regional Science Fair was held in North Wilkesboro, NC, on February 26. This is an annual event sponsored by the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair in which students from schools in Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Catawba, Alleghany, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Iredell, Alexander, and Davie counties compete to progress to the state level. MCA students did very well at the regional fair with Emi Cassell, 8 th grade, winning 1 st place in the Earth Sciences Division with her project entitled “What are Left to right: Mary Beth Browne, Emi Cassell, Rob Halpern (MCA Middle School Science Teacher), Peter Balogh, and Will Campbell the Effects of Oil and Carbon Dioxide as Environmental Agents on Photosynthetic Process of Anacharis Canadensis?” Mary Beth Browne, 8 th grade, won 1 st place in the Technology Division with her project entitled “Water for the World: Is Solar Distillation an Effective Means of Potable Water Production?” Peter Balogh, 8 th grade, won a third place award in the Chemistry Division for his project entitled “Study of Corrosion,” and Will Campbell, 8 th grade, won an honorable mention in the Biological Sciences Division for his project entitled “Using Gelatin as a Growth Medium.” Emi and Mary Beth will progress to the state level of competition at the NC Science and Engineering Fair that will be held in Raleigh. Janet’s essay was chosen as the first place winner out of 1,651 North Carolina entries. She received a $50 Target gift card, and a $75 cash award from the North Carolina Center for the Book, which is a program of the State Library of NC, Department of Cultural Resources. Janet’s essay is now entered into the national level of the competition, where the winners will receive a $10,000 Letters About Literature Reading Promotion Grant for their school library.

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for HeartMCA students raised an incredible $3,330.65 during the recent Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events. All proceeds from these events go to the American Heart Association. Many students jumped rope or shot some hoops in memory or honor of loved ones who have suffered with heart disease.

VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Runner UpPeter Balogh, 8th grade, was recently named the 1st

place regional winner of the 2011 Patriot’s Pen essay contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and most recently named a runner up at the state level of the competition. This year’s theme was “Does Patriotism Still Matter?” Peter received a $75 check for his regional win, and a $50 check for his state level win. Dr. Keith Sparks and Mr. Carl Whitaker from the local VFW post came to MCA to present Peter with a plaque, certificate, and his cash awards.
