On Thursday, June 7th, the Cincinnatus Art Club held the annual art show which was organized by our art teachers Mrs. Macksi Warner and Ms. Nicole Fabian. The art show ran from 6:30-8:00pm with artwork being displayed in the large gym, as well as throughout the halls, from students in elementary, middle school, and high school grade levels. There were many cool pieces of artwork from high school students in the Computer Graphics, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Studio Art classes. Artwork from students in the Elementary and Middle School art classes were phenomenal and Cincinnatus school has very creative artists! Students in the Computer Graphics class were given the opportunity to design the program and come up with a theme for the art show, with the winner having their theme chosen for the art show. Elizabeth Golicki was this year's winner (shown in bottom right corner), and the theme was How Will You Leave Your Mark? Judges awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, or Honorable Mention to artwork in various categories. Community artist Leslie Cobb displayed some of her artwork in this show, along with artwork from her art class of home-schooled children. Art Club members were also offered face painting for people who wanted their face painted. Art teachers Mrs. Warner and Ms. Fabian and members of Art Club did a very nice job putting the show together, as well as all the students who helped to create a wonderful show. This was a very nice show with a lot of fun and talented pieces of artwork. Written by: Jordan Rice

First Annual Athletic BanquetOn Wednesday, June 6th, Cincinnatus held its 1st Annual Athletic Banquet for both JV and Varsity athletes and their family members. The evening began at 6 pm with a spaghetti dinner. After dinner, athletes, friends and families, made their way to the Wilbur Auditorium for the award ceremony. Each coach was given the opportunity to talk a little about their team, their season, and the many accomplishments they had, followed by giving out individual awards. At the end of the banquet, the teams had their picture taken with the CCL League Championship banners, which were created by community members who generously gave up their time to make these banners. It was a bittersweet night for the seniors who's high school sports careers have come to an end, and it was a very nice and emotional night as the teams and players celebrated their successful seasons. Nice job athletes! Written by: Jordan Rice

Distracted Driving "A re-enacted tragedy"

On Monday June 4th, a mock accident was held at school for grades 9-12. The mock accident was to inform students about distracted driving and to show what could happen. Distracted driving is a popular but highly dan-gerous activity that not only young drivers engage in, but also adults. Throughout the day students were pulled from class to volunteer; they volunteered to represent the deaths that happen all too often with distracted driving. Forty percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver has used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger. That is a staggering percentage! The students gathered outside and the stage was set in the front parking area of the school with tarps covering the accident scene. The presentation began with Charlie Ea-ton playing a re-enacted 911 call from a crash involving two cars. The tarps were removed to reveal the mayhem. While waiting for the emergency response personnel to arrive on the scene, the students were able to get close to the accident scene, walking around the cars to see the blood and the injuries and hear the cries for help. Soon to follow the sirens of the arriving emergency vehicles and personnel, including the police and the coroner. The students watched the scene unfold as the victims were extricated from the cars and either put in the ambulance or coroner's van. The "driver" of the vehicle, who survived, was questioned by the sherriff. Following the accident scene, the students moved to soccer field to watch the Mercy Flight helicopter crew transport a "victim." Watching the helicopter take off was incredible! Next was an assembly that explained what exactly distracted driving consists of. In addition to cell phone use, distractions can include eating, putting on make-up, adjusting the radio, talking to passengers, reading maps/gps, and watching videos. Videos were played to show the effects of distracted driving on people when a friend, family member, and/or classmate has been in a car accident. A statistic from distracteddriver.gov says that text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. This presentation was given to in-form the students of the dangers and give them a chance to change the way they drive before they hurt themselves or someone else. The students were later given a pledge that they could sign saying what dangerous activities they promised NOT to engage in while driving. The event was also featured in the Cortland Standard, issued June 5th, check it out for more information. An event such as this takes a lot of time, planning and volunteers to make it a success. Thank you to Charlie Eaton, the Cincinnatus Fire Department, Willet Fire Department, Cortland County Coroner's Office, Cortland County Sherriff 's Office, Mercy Flight, Robert's Auto Salvage, Jim's Towing, and Cin-cinnatus Central School for making everything possible. Environmental Class Takes ChargeIn an effort to think globally and act locally, the Environmental Science class took charge. The students beautified the courtyard as well as cleaned up the Nature Trail behind the school. The class cleaned up the courtyard by weeding, getting rid of dead roots in the ground, planting new plants, getting rid of unhealthy ones, refilling the birdfeeder, and just making the area look nice. Along the Nature Trail, the students cut back the year's growth and put chips down throughout the walking trail. The students did a nice job and really enjoy having access to these areas. Check out the nature trail the next time you are at the school fields!Written by: Jordan Rice

Moving Up DayCeremony 2012

On Friday June 1st, Cincinnatus held their annual Moving Up Day Ceremony for students in grades 8-12. Kassidy Kievit and Mallory Cobb were the MC's of this event. To start off the ceremony, the seniors were individually introduced as they walked down the aisle to the front of the auditorium. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the Alma Mater, Mr. Mack gave his opening remarks. Student Senate

and officers were called to the stage to be officially sworn in. Incoming president, Kassidy Kievit, gave her acceptance speech. Other speeches from students included National Honor Society president, Kelli Clark, and Katelyn Schroeder, Class of 2012 president. The traditional passing of the key took place, as Katelyn Schroder handed over the key to the Class of 2013 president, Richard Schmidt. After that, the annual flag ceremony took place, as each class president passed the flag to the upcoming class president. The Moving Up Day Ceremony concluded with the Class of 2012 slideshow which showed many pictures and vidoes clips from over the years. As always, the dance video section was very entertaining. Awards then took place for the juniors and seniors, and then they were released to enjoy a fun day at Greenwood Park for the annual Jr.-Sr. Picnic. While the juniors and seniors were on their picnic, the freshmen and sophomores had their award ceremony, and then spent the afternoon enjoying Fun in the Sun activities, which was temporarily named Pain in the Rain this year because of the weather. Activities were held in the big gym for the last 2 periods of the day. Even though it was held indoors, the students had a blast. The day ended with a end of the year dance that evening. It was a great day for all, and thank you to the Student Senate for a wonderful Ceremony. Written by: Jordan Rice

Music Department Has a Strong FinishThe Music Department topped off a great year with fabulous showings in two concerts and an all-county festival. The 5/6 and 7-12 concerts were both very well attended and were received with much enthusiasm. (The 7-12 Band even got a standing ovation, prompting them to play an encore!) Then on June 5th, the 5/6 Chorus was joined by choruses from St. Mary’s, Homer Intermediate and Hartnett Elementary in a rousing festival of choral songs. With at least 130 young vocalists singing all together, they nearly raised the roof of Wilbur Auditorium!

Our Glee Give-a-Note Grant money is being wisely spent on a variety of instruments for band and classroom use. Other purchases will be made over the summer, all chosen to best serve the needs of our young musicians.

Please check the late summer/early fall edition of the Lion’s Roar for the complete Music Dept. Activity Calendar! It’s a great way to help you plan the year’s musical events in advance.

Thanks to everyone in the community who has been generous with your donations, your support and your encouragement throughout this year. We are continuing to see growth in numbers in our bands and choruses, and look forward to another year of growth in musicality next year. Submitted by: Mr. Koch

130 young voices from nearby schools filled the auditorium for the All-County Festival.

Middle School Honor Students Visit Knoebel’s Amusement Park

On Friday, June 8th, 52 middle school students in grades five through eight went to Knoebel’s for the day. To be eligible for the trip, students had to make Honor Roll the first three marking periods. Buses left

the school at 7 a.m. The weather was beautiful, and students spent the day taking advantage of the many rides and activities offered. This year we ate dinner at the park to give students more time to enjoy the rides. We boarded buses and returned to the school at 9:30 p.m. Everyone who attended had an awesome time! Submitted by: Ms. Roelen

High School Honors Dinner High School students who made Honor Roll for the first 3 out of 4 marking periods were honored with dinner and a certificate of recognition on Tuesday, June 12th. Each student was allowed to bring 2 guests to join them in the celebration. Dinner consisted of chicken, lasagna, salad, carrots, fruit, rolls, and dessert. After dinner, Mr. Mack said a few words about what a great accomplishment it is for these students to maintain at least an 89.5 average throughout the school year. He is very proud of their hard work and dedication to their schooling. Twenty-four students were recognized.

Cincinnatus alumnus Jennifer Randall has just completed a speedy track season for Ithaca College. During the indoor season Jennifer broke the nine year old Ithaca school record for the 1000 m with a time of 2:54.69 and qualified for Indoor Nationals by running the indoor mile in 4:58:51. She travelled to Ohio to compete in the NCAA Division III championships in this event where she ran to a 14th place finish with a time of 5:09.18. Following the indoor season, Jenn exploded into the outdoor season breaking numerous records. Jenn competed at the NYSCTC at the University of Rochester where she smashed a 25 year track record, as well as a meet record, by running a 4:32.93 in the 1,500 m and after a short recovery, ran the 800m for a PR and another state meet first place honor. She now also holds the facility record at SUNY Oneonta in the 800 m with a time of 2:11:91. Jenn qualified for Nationals in both events. Jenn participated in the 1600m relay, typically an event reserved for sprinters (Jenn is a mid-distance runner) and that too qualified for Nationals and so now she was headed to the Outdoor NCAA Division III Championships. For the outdoor season, the national competition was held at Claremont Mudd-Scripps College just outside of Los Angeles, California. Jenn again ran to a 14th place National finish in the 800m and the relay team finished 17th. Other accolades Jenn has garnered along the way include being named to the Empire 8 President’s List for having a GPA of at least 3.75, two–time Empire 8 Athlete of the Week, five-time NYSCTC Track Athlete of the Week, NYSCTC Athlete of the Meet and most recently, District 3 College Division All-Academic Team. This summer, Jenn is continuing her studies at the University of Rochester as part Ithaca College’s Physical Therapy program. Somehow she is finding time to run to keep in shape for her final year of track eligibility at Ithaca College. Congratulations Jennifer! Cincinnatus Central School is proud to remember one of our outstanding former student athletes.

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
