The Principal’s Corner

We have had another wonderful week, which did include a couple of rainy day dismissals. We have our quota for the year now, as this beginning with the weather is very unusual. I mention it once again to thank you for your cooperation during dismissal. Back to School Night was so well attended! It was wonderful to see so many of you and catch up on summer as well as to learn about events for the coming year at St. Mark. Many people work hard and volunteer many hours to make this school a place of academic learning as well as a place where they can make friends and enjoy lots of activities in a faithful environment. Your support makes this a reality. This has been a very busy week with our K-5 teachers attending an inservice to prepare them to use our new Science program. Every year, the diocese evaluates publishers of specific contents and chooses a curriculum that is state approved for use in our schools. For example, our Language Arts curriculum is used for five years before another one is adopted. We rotate new adoptions annually. Our seventh grade is currently at Sound to Sea, a hands on instructional program that is located at the Outer Banks. They experience so much and learn about tidal basins and actually participate in activities like dissect-ing a squid. It is a fun trip while much learning takes place. Our kindness campaign is off to a great start. We feel the support from everyone. On Tuesday, our school will have a short assembly to ensure we are all working toward the same goals. We have our sign, kindness matters, on our fence with a signed pledge from everyone that we all agree to support this effort. Don’t forget to get your fundraising dollars in by Monday to be eligible for the wine basket drawing. The weather for early next week is unpredictable at this time. Please stay tuned to television and radio stations for updates. Additionally, any changes in the schedule for St. Mark will appear on the website, via phone blast and on local media. As always, make decisions about your child’s attendance using your own best judgment for your family.

Reminder: Please write first and last name of your child on the evelope marked Fall Fundraiser or use the envelope sent home at Open House.

St. Mark Catholic School will have their annual Speech, Language, and Hearing Screening

on September 11, 18, and 20 here at school for your convenience. The cost will be $25 and will assess articulation, language concepts, auditory processing and auditory memory. A hearing screening will also be provided.

Screenings are a wonderful, inexpensive way to pinpoint areas that may affect your child’s

academic and social performance. Screenings indicate areas that may need further assessment. This screening is appropriate for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Students in

kindergarten and 1st grade will be sent a permission form home. If your child is in 2nd grade or be-yond, please ask your child’s teacher, the front desk, or Mrs. Carney for a screening form.

Please feel free to consult with your teacher if you have questions regarding your child’s

participation.
